DIRECTOR’S NOTES Dick Harp, Director A few months ago, I had two pleasant experiences within a few days of each other. The first was a graduation for students who had taken a welding class at the local college. The second was a graduation of sorts for people who had taken a course in bridge playing. Both involved individuals over 50 years of age. The first involved a man who had dropped out of school when he was young. The second involved a woman who was widowed shortly after she moved to our area. The man held many short-lived jobs which paid minimum wage or slightly above. The woman had not yet made any friends when her husband was killed in a freak accident. Both wanted to take classes to improve their lives but were financially unable to pay the fees attached to their respective classes. Over a year ago, a fellow parishioner asked me to join a group of individuals who wanted to help people take classes to better their lives. After several meetings, and with the help of two attorneys in our group, we established a 501(c)(3) endowment fund which could be used to help people such as the two previously mentioned. The donations are tax deductible. The response from our citizens was gratifying and we began to receive donations. The two aforementioned graduates were the recipients of scholarships made possible due to the fund. The male is now employed as a welder by a ship building company in Mobile, Ala. The woman is now playing bridge three times a week. We helped change their lives for the better! A few years ago, an endowment fund was created at KSU to provide scholarships for those who could not
afford classes. The fund was named in honor of Barbara S. Calhoun, dean of our KSU College of Continuing and Professional Education, in recognition of the her guidance in making CCPE one of the best, if not the best, continuing education programs in the country. OLLI is housed within CCPE. I am asking you to consider making a donation to this endowment fund to help individuals take advantage of our classes in an effort to help improve their lives. No donation is too small and all are tax deductible. If you choose to join our journey in changing lives, make your check payable to: Kennesaw State University Foundation Please indicate your donation is for the “Barbara S. Calhoun Endowment Fund.” Your generous donation can be mailed to: Sandra Cobb Kennesaw State University 3333 Busbee Drive MD3301 Kennesaw, Georgia 30144 The scholarships are confidential and recipients will not be known. Thank you for your consideration. Hope to see you in class soon.

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT
THE MASTER OF SUSPENSE The Art of Alfred Hitchcock
O
Over the course of his career, Alfred Hitchcock directed more than 50 feature films. In our modern-day world, he has become a force of influence to contemporary filmmakers like Brian De Palma and Quentin Tarantino. Nearly four decades after his death, this award-winning director remains one of the most eminent and celebrated filmmakers around the globe. Dr. George Mengert, Pace Academy’s former Artistic Director of Theatre, recalls the first time he became fascinated with Hitchcock’s films. “I taught a film course at Pace that focused on major American directors of the 20th century,” Mengert said. “Hitchcock was included in the course. I taught on the film, ‘Vertigo.’ I came to really admire the brilliance of Hitchcock in that film.”

Hitchcock’s works are renowned for their tremendous oddity and complex characters. There is a certain intricacy to all of his enthralling films. The filmmaker was even nicknamed the “Master of Suspense” for using a kind of psychological uncertainty that provides the audience a distinct experience. Hitchcock revolutionized the film industry with his works and pioneered many of the elements of suspense we see in movies today. For those who have yet to see Hitchcock’s landmark thrillers, a brand-new class is coming to OLLI in October. The class, taught by Dr. Mengert, will introduce Hitchcock, his body of work and the big-screen movies that transformed the world of film. “If they have not experienced Hitchcock before, they are in for a wonderful, thrilling movie time,” Mengert said. “Students will learn about the biography of Hitchcock, his life and his major themes. They will revisit and gain a new appreciation of
some of his major films. If they already know some of Hitchcock’s films, they will grow to love them even more.” Dr. Mengert comes to OLLI with an array of remarkable accolades. In 44 years as a faculty member at Pace Academy, Dr. Mengert launched the school’s first Advanced Placement Course. He served as the school’s director of admissions and launched the school’s nationally renowned debate program. While all these accomplishments are significant, Mengert’s life’s work was creating a top-notch theatre program at Pace Academy. He even helped design the Fine Arts Center, which opened in 1991. Dr. Mengert began teaching at Pace Academy just 13 years after its founding. He’d planned to teach for a year or two while completing his Ph.D. in literature, philosophy and theology at Emory University. However, he remained at Pace Academy for his entire career.
When asked about his favorite memory of working there, Dr. Mengert smiled and said, “Working with students in the shows that I have directed throughout the years. Many of them have gone into professional theater. Those are my happiest memories.” During his tenure at Pace Academy, Dr. Mengert staged more than 120 productions, but not all were performed in a theatre. Some of Mengert’s earlier shows took place in local churches and the school’s cafeteria. One thing that is certain: The degree of professionalism in each production was the same time and time again. So, what can OLLI students expect in his class? “I am looking forward to sharing my knowledge about the person who is Alfred Hitchcock,” Mengert said. “Someone who enjoys classical films and wants to know more about the genius of Hitchcock’s technique will truly enjoy this class.”

Spirits of The Great American West
This class is a very unique look at American History westward from the Mississippi River to California. Major historical events are chronologically tied together with personal accounts, legends and myths. Little known, and rarely addressed events and characters, are woven together in a classroom lecture & group discussion environment using source documents and hard copy maps. Some historical questions are addressed but are left as “histories mysteries” since there are no complete explanations that resolve them. Facts are woven together with legends and common sense to make history come alive as you have never experienced it. This class is frequently repeated by students who find each session equally as informative as the preceding one. Students find that Quentin Thomas, a recognized historian, author and cowboy poet, is an entertaining, informative and enlightening instructor.

The Labyrinth - A Walking Meditation
The labyrinth, known to be at least 4,000 years old, has been used by many cultures, countries, and faiths around the world. It is a walking meditation on a spiral path leading to a central point and then back out again.
12
Like the spiral found in nature, such as the conch shell, the pine cone, or the rose blossom, the labyrinth is also a curving line around a central point, symbolizing movement, growth, change, and providing a continually shifting perspective that is inspiring and life-renewing. Walking a labyrinth is a metaphor for life - the path shifts in unexpected ways, sometimes away from your goal, but ultimately leading to the center. It is a powerful meditation tool, helping to quiet the mind and allowing time for personal reflection. Learn about the labyrinth, walk a large canvas labyrinth, and center yourself in quietness and reflection in this class hosted by a Veriditas Trained and Certified Labyrinth Facilitator. $49, 3 Hrs Instructor(s): Chris Beam 11/09/2016 1 Session(s) Wed 1:00PM - 4:00PM Course# 172SHRC1202A

The third in a series of courses for beginning and advancing players offered by the American Contract Bridge League and KSU. In this course we look at techniques for defeating contracts that declarer would make if we do not defend carefully. We start by looking at the guidelines for handling specific situations on defense: opening leads, third-hand play, second-hand play and signals. We move on to look at how the defenders establish winners and take their sure tricks. Then we see how the defenders can interfere with declarer’s plan to make the contract. Finally, we take a look at how the defenders formulate their plan and put it into action. This course does not require completion of the first two courses in the series, but it is recommended that the student consider taking those classes prior to taking this class. $99, 16 Hrs Instructor(s): Chris Kohlmiller, Margaret Peabody 10/11/2016 - 12/06/2016 (Omit: 11/22/2016) 8 Session(s) Tue 1:00PM - 3:00PM Course# 172SHRC1058A
