• Respect For The Individual The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) offers an impressive selection of educational and social opportunities for adults age 50 and older. With a purpose to promote lifelong learning and continued intellectual and personal growth for retirement-age individuals, OLLI has become the place for fun, interactive learning in a safe and encouraging environment. Curriculum draws from the interests, talents and experiences of older adult learners. Academic courses are college level (without the homework, term papers and tests), and cover everything from personal computers to fitness for life and visual arts. DIRECTOR’S NOTES Dick Harp, Director On September 28, the College of Continuing and Professional Education at Kennesaw State University held its first Casino Night Scholarship Fundraiser. This event raised money for the Barbara S. Calhoun Scholarship Fund. As you know, our OLLI is housed within the College of Continuing and Professional Education. This scholarship fund was created to provide educational opportunities for members of our community who could not afford to pay the registration costs of classes. It might be hard to believe, but there are many individuals in our area who cannot afford to take classes. Scholarships provide the opportunity for these people to participate in classes and help them improve their lives. Whether it is through obtaining specific skills enabling them to gain meaningful employment or simply to improve their quality of life, we help them enjoy a better life. The thought of helping these people through a casino night grew from a simple idea into an extremely intense event which

required many hours of planning and hard work by our staff. Our employees truly believe that our main goal is to help improve the lives of members of our community. The entire staff got involved with the tremendous task of planning the event. Their enthusiasm was remarkable, and our Casino Night was a resounding success. I was reminded of a TV show, “The A Team,” which has been off the air for many years. At the end of each episode, which of course always has a happy ending, the leader of the “A Team” would say, “I love it when a plan has a successful ending.” Of course, to reach that happy ending there are always foreseen obstacles that arise which have to be overcome to achieve success. Our team met obstacle after obstacle and solved the problems one by one. The end result was a spectacular event that was enjoyed by everyone.

Musically LISTENING

ur senses can evoke emotionally charged memories O for many of us, especially sound. Most of the time we are not even aware of this until some part of that memory

is relived through hearing. For example, squeaky hardwood floors remind me of being at my grandmother’s house. I wish my floors squeaked at least a little! The sound of a drill may bring back memories in the dentist’s chair which can be a very stressful memory while the sound of the ocean crashing on the shore may bring back memories of youth and playing on the beach.

Music is a big part of my personal auditory memories because we grew up in a family that was always listening to music from many different genres. To this day, I can still listen to “Dixie Chicken” by Little Feat and be reminded of days in my dad’s darkroom – he always listened to 96 Rock while working in his darkroom – and my brothers and sister did the same when we got old enough to develop our film and prints.

As you can see, music always played a large role in my life and still does. There are songs that can bring me to tears instantly and songs that just make me feel good. My children play instruments and love going to see performers of all sorts – from the latest pop bands to classical to opera. Music that is associated with an act will instill even stronger memories – like if you see a particular play that you enjoyed, the music would bring back those memories. Music can be so emotional in so many ways. Here at OLLI, we would like to share some of the beauty of music with you and your loved ones.

The Speaking about Wellness for Seniors speaker series provides people age 50 and older with the tools to make lifestyle changes for their personal health and well-being. These programs are presented as a series. At your first Speaking about Wellness for Seniors program, you will receive a class notebook. As you go through the series, you will add material to your notebook. Those participants completing all four programs will receive special recognition and a gift at the end of the year. All programs include light dinner and dessert, presentation by a featured speaker, educational materials and a free gift. The 2014 series begins in January. Cost: $10 per program.
