eynote Address: How can “out of K control” be a GOOD thing for our industry? Rich Luker, Ph.D, Founder of the ESPN Sports Poll & Luker on Trends Innovation forces us to change our thinking every 18 months or less. Mass adoption of virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and driverless cars are around the corner. The vast majority of kids five and over already have their own tablet or smartphone. That means they are now in control of their free time, and means sports and fitness activities no longer have uncontested control of American free time activity.
8
#SFIALEADS17 2017 SFIA INDUSTRY LEADERS SUMMIT
What if free time becomes dominated by time spent online? How can the loss of control be a good thing for the sports and fitness industries? While an online tidal wave of competition for time, attention, and discretionary dollars continues to build, we are seeing the signs of fatigue from Americans. More than half say they wish they spent less time online. And the younger the American, the larger the percentage seeking relief (77% of 12-17-year-olds actively do things to get away from being online). By the time he is done, Rich will leave little doubt that we are not in control. But you will also have a clear sense for how dramatic change in technology and innovation can, should, and will increase the opportunities to re-engage Americans in sports and fitness.

Reinvention of Retail Brian Finegan, Head of Marketing & Product Management, Sports & Fitness, Amazon Much has been written on the traditional purchase funnel. The shift in retail from in-store purchasing to online is an uncontested disruptor in our industry and continues to transform the shopping experience. Consumers rule, and brands and retailers must be responsive to their needs and expectations. Companies are working to create a dialogue with consumers on several different channels, including online, in-store, through influencers, and social media. Online is not just a sales channel any more, but a social network engine for marketing and ad space as well. Join Amazon, to hear firsthand a look to the future on retail, share insights on how they see the brand shopping experience and path to purchase evolving, and provide insights on what companies can do to stay ahead of curve.

RICHARD LUKER, PH.D
Founder, Luker on Trends & the ESPN Sports Poll Dr. Rich Luker is best known for his creation of The EPSN Sports Poll (The Poll) in 1994. The poll was the first systematic, national, ongoing study or sport in America. Today, Luker still has proprietary measures inside The Poll covering overall free time and discretionary spending, as well as cutting edge measures of free time technology engagement. The measures Rich developed in creating The Poll have become the standard measures of fan avidity and fan base size used by all the major research companies working in the industry today. All the major sports properties have been clients of The Poll, as well as major brands including General Motors, Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Anheuser-Busch, AT&T, AARP, VISA, NIKE, Proctor & Gamble, Hershey’s and many others. In the late 1990s, Rich’s research uncovered a growing sense of the loss of engaged community. IN response, in 2008 he wrote “Simple Community” to encourage Americans to be more engaged and proved insight to sponsor brands on how to promote more engages community. Since 2009, Rich has been writing the quarterly column “Up Next” for Sports Business Journal – covering the changing trends in the sports industry. In 2010 he formed the company Luker on Trends (LoT) to offer broader contextual research and strategic consulting to his clients. LoT has documented the substantial shift in free time activity as a result of the great recession, and as impacted by explosive technological advancement. In 2011, LoT published research showing a significant increase in “vitality” by Americans 35+. The combination of explosive technology, a fragile economy, younger generations facing uncertain futures, and elders with greater vitally have resulted in Luker doing even more to promote the need and desire for more engaged, in-person, community.
