Place Value Ideas, Activities, and Apps Activities/Ideas • Place value cups- a set of foam cups for each place value you are going up to (4 for the thousands) for each student. Position the opening of the cup to the left so that numbers are read left to right. Write number 0-9 in sharpie along the rim of each cup. On the inside of the cup, write the 0 (for tens place) 00 (for hundreds place) and 000 (for thousands place) followed by a + sign next to each number on the rim. • Place Value Snake- Use construction paper to create a place value snake using standard form and expanded notation. • Number line-up game- Give students large digit cards (numbers written on 8.5” x 11” paper). Ask student to form numbers that fit specific conditions: • Line up to build the largest number possible. • Line up to build the smallest number. • Build a number between 50,000 and 60,000. • Build a different number between 50,000 and 60,000. • Call out place values and ask student in that space to raise the card above their head. • Top it Game- Use number cards 1-9 in a card deck. Each student should choose a card at a time and place it on their place value mat. Once a card has been placed, it can’t be moved. The goal is to create the largest number possible.
