Page 1

Mission Statement

We are an inclusive community on a mission to inspire unbounded curiosity and independent thought in every one of our students. In a unique educational environment that extends well beyond campus, we nurture students’ knowledge of themselves and the world, expanding their full academic and personal potential while preparing them to lead lives characterized by thoughtfulness, integrity, and a quest to effect positive change.

Diversity at SCH

Diversity is a condition of excellence. Embracing a diverse, inclusive community is fundamental to providing the most rigorous, globally competitive education. At SCH, we aim to engage, understand, and celebrate the broad range of human experiences and perspectives. Through our curriculum, professional development, community-centered events, and daily interactions, we are committed to cultivating empathy and inclusion, and to nurturing the authentic expression of every individual.

VISION Statement

SCH Academy aims to be at the forefront of independent school education through excellent teaching, learning, creativity, and innovation. We see a future where SCH graduates become catalysts for positive change, their impact echoing not just within our walls, but throughout the world.

FROM the Head of School

Dear SCH Community,

As we reflect on the 2023-2024 school year, one thing becomes abundantly clear: the power of community. Our success this past year has been fueled by the collective commitment and generosity of individuals like you who believe in the mission of Springside Chestnut Hill Academy.

This year has been a remarkable journey, filled with moments of joy, growth, and achievement. From the many celebrations that marked the end of the year—tournaments, performances, field trips, and commencement ceremonies—to the everyday connections that make SCH a place of belonging, we have witnessed the enduring magic of our school. This magic, in large part, has been made possible by your support.

The pages of this annual report are a testament to the profound impact your generosity has had on our community. Your contributions have empowered us to continue redefining learning and discovery, setting new standards in teaching, innovation, and inclusivity. As we launched our strategic framework, your gifts provided the foundation for us to envision and begin building a future where every student thrives.

Our strategic framework, developed with the insights of over 1,800 voices from our community, is anchored in our mission and core values. It outlines five strategic priorities that will guide us forward: vigorous academics, teaching, and learning; intentional and embedded innovation; engaged community committed to belonging; the unique SCH story; and expanded investment in our future. These priorities are not just words on paper; they represent our commitment to delivering an extraordinary educational experience and adapting to the evolving needs of our students and the world.

Your investment in SCH is an investment in the future. It enables us to provide the very best for our students, ensuring they are equipped with the skills, knowledge, and character to succeed in an ever-changing world. Your belief in our mission and your dedication to our vision have made all the difference.

As you read through this report, I hope you feel the deep gratitude we have for your support. Your generosity has been and will continue to be a cornerstone of our success, impacting generations of SCH students to come.

With heartfelt thanks,

LOWER SCHOOL

SCH Academy Announces New McCausland Center for Social Emotional Learning

Last January, SCH announced the launch of its new McCausland Center for Social Emotional Learning (SEL). As part of SCH’s strong commitment to mental health and wellness, the new Lower School SEL Center now offers students individual (short-term), group, and classroom counselor support, along with ongoing programmatic support for teachers and parents.

Collaborative Artwork Unveiled

The collaborative artwork by Class of 1957 Artist-in-Residence Tawny Chatmon, a photographybased artist, and 2nd-grade students was unveiled at the Lower School Art Show. Chatmon’s work often combines overlappings of digital collage and illustration. The collaborative work features student-designed messages for the world, like “more love” and “more peace and care for nature and animals.” Chatmon expressed gratitude to the 2nd-grade class for their beautifully crafted symbols and thanked the Black Student Union, teachers, and the Class of 1957 for their support. The piece is now part of SCH’s permanent collection and is displayed in the McCausland Lower School.

Lower

School’s Culture and Character Program Revamped

Last fall, the Lower School celebrated the new school year with enthusiasm and unity. Administrators provided each classroom with a backpack filled with cards that represent SCH’s values including integrity, courage, thoughtfulness, resilience, and diversity. The initiative focused on enriching character development through the assembly program, promoting positive traits, supporting classroom management, and nurturing students’ leadership potential as responsible global citizens.

Fourth Graders Build and Test Rafts in Wissahickon Creek Adventure

Fourth graders transformed English and science lessons into real-world adventures this past spring. Inspired by Gary Paulsen’s novel Hatchet, they spent weeks designing, building, and testing miniature wooden rafts in the Wissahickon Creek, as part of the new Wit & Wisdom curriculum. The students problem-solved to achieve buoyancy, switching out twine and searching for the right sticks.

Supporting SCH Academy has been deeply meaningful to us on a personal level. We have always believed in the transformative power of education, and seeing the positive impact that SCH has on its students and community resonates with our values of fostering growth and potential.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Middle Schoolers Captivate with ‘Beauty and the Beast Jr.’ After dedicating 100 hours to rehearsal, 65 Middle School students captivated audiences with sold-out performances of Beauty and the Beast, Jr. They mastered their lines, choreography, stagecraft, and technical skills, enhanced by a new digital backdrop with animated images. The students embraced teamwork and forged lasting friendships.

Middle School Students Win 1st & 2nd Place Prizes in FIRST LEGO League Challenge

In the FIRST LEGO League Challenge (FLL), teams of up to 10 students build and program a LEGO robot that navigates the missions of a robot game. Two SCH teams were awarded first and second place in the “Core Values” category at the FLL tournament hosted by SCH. This category celebrates the teams that display extraordinary enthusiasm and spirit.

Wissahickon Hike Reveals Rocks’ Hidden Story for 6th Graders

This past winter, 6th-grade classes embarked on a hands-on expedition in the Wissahickon to uncover evidence of the rock cycle. Recent rain and snow helped showcase areas of the trail ravaged by erosion. Students examined (and diagrammed) these scars, learning how weathering and erosion sculpt the landscape. They also investigated the role of plants in safeguarding the soil from erosion.

UPPER SCHOOL

It’s a Bird! It’s a Plane! It’s the Devil Dragon Weather Balloon! Throughout the 2023-2024 school year, four SCH Academy students participated in the NASAsponsored Nationwide Eclipse Ballooning Project. Along with their teachers and Drexel University partners, they launched balloons with scientific experiments to study eclipses, tracked data, retrieved equipment, and presented their findings at a national conference. They launched their final balloon from upstate New York during the total eclipse in April.

Reentry Simulation Fosters Empathy in Students

A Reentry Simulation designed to teach 11th graders about the challenges faced by people recently released from prison significantly increased students’ empathy. Developed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, SCH was the first high school to take part in this innovative in-house field trip, previously exclusive to college students and justice field professionals. Students assumed unique identities and navigated stations mirroring real-world challenges, such as obtaining IDs, accessing social services, and managing bills. Equipped with a “life card” and a “wallet,” they faced the possibility of returning to jail, reflecting our nation’s high recidivism rate. The simulation complemented the students’ American Stories curriculum, which included reading Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates and analyzing the docuseries College Behind Bars

The

Campus Lantern Flickers On The Campus Lantern, SCH’s revived student newspaper, debuted its first issue last fall. The student publication’s editor-in-chief Griffy Whitman ’25 began to build the newspaper through his Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership Capstone course, where his idea came to fruition. Contributing student writers have penned dozens of articles for multiple issues, including arts coverage, book reviews, opinion pieces, comics, sports, and news items.

ARts Highlights

SCH Players Conquer Dystopia and Brecht in Hilarious ‘Urinetown’ Run

SCH Players staged four remarkable performances of their spring production Urinetown: The Musical. The musical humorously addresses heavy themes like climate change, class disparities, and corporate corruption. The SCH Players embraced the Brechtian Theatre style for the first time. Throughout Urinetown, both leads and ensemble members directly addressed the audience, interrupted action through song, and shocked the audience with strong front lights and flashlights.

SCHhas always made a clear and meaningful investment in the arts, recognizing that creativity plays a critical role in a student’s overall development — it’s one of its absolute strengths. These are not just extracurricular activities; they are core strengths of SCH that prepare students to think creatively, collaborate, and innovate.

Associate members of the Society are young alumni (within 15 years of graduation) with a gift between $250-$1,499 annually. We would like to sincerely thank the generous donors who supported the School and make up this year’s Wissahickon Leadership Society.

20th ANniversary Engineering & Robotics

SCH celebrated the 20th anniversary of its Robotics program at the beginning of the 23-24 school year. The event featured STEM panels, an open house, and awards recognizing the program’s founders, Peter Randall ‘69 and Rob Ervin H’08, as well as alumni and community members for their contributions. The program has grown significantly since its inception, now engaging over 150 students annually. The anniversary acknowledged the achievements of alumni in robotics and engineering and honored those who have supported the program’s growth.

Parents ASSOCIATION TOTALLY RAD! FOR THE REC

Thank you for your generous support of the Parents Association fundraiser, Totally Rad! for The Rec, held onthis past spring. Over 400 community members, dressed in ‘80s flair, enjoyed a fun-filled evening to support the Restore The Rec campaign, which aims to raise $6.5 million for a much-needed renovation of the 135-year-old facility. Originally transformed in 1974 from a stable into a performing arts center, The Rec is a cherished space that has hosted countless productions and events. The renovation will ensure it continues to serve future generations as a premier multi-use creative space.

Founded in 2015, The Houston Society recognizes Springside Chestnut Hill Academy’s most generous benefactors who have made lifetime gifts totaling $250,000 or more, including annual gifts, gifts to endowments, capital projects, restricted gifts, and planned gifts.

When you make a gift to SCH, you join a community of like-minded people who share your values and “esprit de corps!”

Thomas Watkins Jr. ‘78

We chose to donate through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program to support students who may otherwise not have had the opportunity to attend SCH. We believe people with diverse backgrounds, including economic backgrounds, should learn and work together.

—Jaimie and Kevin Shmelzer P’25, P’28, P’28

EDUCATIONAL IMPROVEMENT TAX CREDIT PROGRAM (EITC) & OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIP TAX CREDIT PROGRAM (OSTC)

The Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) programs enable Pennsylvania taxpayers and business owners to support independent schools like SCH by redirecting their tax dollars. This year, our community contributed over $1.6 million in tuition assistance through these programs.
