MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Throughout this issue of SCHool, you will see many of the hallmark features that I have learned make SCH such a unique and exceptional school. This includes the undeniable benefits of single-gender education up through the adolescent years and the incredible heritage of Springside and CHA. Throughout the stories, you will see a mix of the old and the new. Long-tenured and beloved Science Chair Scott Stein and our science faculty highlight our continued dedication to applied learning in the sciences. Then you will see newcomer Athletic Director Dave Wilson bring his energy and spirit to our unified athletics program­— off to a good start with strong team performances this year! And then you will see the inspirational work Steve Druggan Head of School

of Chelsey Roebuck ‘06 and Morgan Berman ‘04, and the future Chelseys and Morgans, through the feature on the Sands Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership and our Venture Incubator.

Through all of this great news, I hope you see a school moving forward but not forgetting its past. I was recently asked how I help those still upset about the merger to feel good about their school again. My answer is really one conversation at a time and the best place to have that conversation is on campus where you will see traditions you love and—according to recent alums—programs you wish were in place during your time here. Our stripes are still on jerseys and now on the school seal; our students feel the academic pull of the Henry Library; and Senior Speeches continue to bring incredible messages (and an Eagles poem!) to our Upper School students every week. But, the best part of the day for me is first thing in the morning when the division heads and I greet our boys and girls with a handshake, high five, and smile as they bounce in to another place where they truly feel at home.

Since I arrived, one of my focuses has been to finalize the fundraising for Phase II of the Campus Master Plan that the Board of Trustees adopted in 2011. As you will read in this edition, we have crossed a major milestone in this campaign and look forward to breaking ground on the McCausland Lower School & Commons this coming spring. Phase I of the master plan has provided a true heart to our unified campus and through Phase II we look forward to opening our Lower School on the edge of the Wissahickon as we make the most of our incredible setting. Having a 62-acre home requires thoughtful stewardship to ensure that our current students, surrounding community, and extended family all feel good about our path forward.

My wife, Pia, and I have quickly learned that SCH is much more than a school and we are doing our best to make it not only a great community but also a great member of our surrounding community. This fall we were honored to loan our incredible Violet Oakley mural to the Woodmere Art Museum, and this winter we hosted a community poetry event in its beautiful Kuch ​Gallery. We have continued our partnership with Blossom (formerly United Cerebral Palsy of Philadelphia & V​icinity), Keystone Hospice, and other local organizations, which provide valuable volunteer opportunities for our students. Finally, we were proud to have a presence along the Avenue during the Chestnut Hill community’s Harry Potter Day and

In addition to these important external community connections, we’ve been working within our own SCH family to deepen our understanding of our five core values and how we might live into them on a daily basis. Though it may have become trite to say “it takes a village,” I think all of us at SCH know it is much more than just words. We are pleased to be part of the​​Chestnut Hill community and thankful that all of you are part of our Springside Chestnut Hill Academy village. Thank you,

THE SCIENCE CURRICULUM AT SCH ACADEMY offers students in every grade challenging and exciting learning experiences that help them develop the skills of scientific inquiry and an understanding of the laws, systems, and structures that define our natural world. Classes provide students with opportunities to use the most up-to-date equipment and technologies as they ask questions, design experiments, explore, collaborate, and become efficient and effective problem solvers. Our interdisciplinary curriculum asks students to quantify their work using appropriate mathematical and statistical tools and to use the arts and new media to model their work and creatively and richly display what they have synthesized. In a world where knowledge of science and technology is increasingly critical, the science curriculum at SCH helps students develop into creative and confident problem solvers who are well

Lower School Science In Lower School, we design scientific explorations and experiments that enable students to pursue answers to questions in the same way that scientists work in the real world. Through stories about past and present scientists, we help them make connections with scientists’ work and open them to the possiblity of one day becoming scientists themselves.

First grade girls and boys participate in a citizenscience project through Journey North called Tulip Test Gardens. They make observations and predictions about tulip bulb growth. Each student plants a bulb in the school garden and records when it emerges and blooms. They draw conclusions about when signs of spring occur around the country by comparing their data with data from other participating schools.

First grade boys collect acorns from the park and learn how to process them into acorn flour. They then hold an acorn celebration with parents where the students explain each step of the process before they all eat acorn pancakes. There are many opportunities for learning through acorns: how food is turned from raw material into a finished, edible product; how oak trees change throughout the season and from year to year; and how animals interact with this natural food source.

Students love finding grubs tucked inside the acorns, and this becomes an opportunity to learn about food webs and insect life cycles.

First grade boys also collect sap from SCH maple trees, which they boil down into maple syrup.

Through this project, they learn how nature responds to temperature (temperature must be just right for sap to flow), how patterns can change from year to year, and how buckets full of sap can accumulate, one tiny drip at a time.

The Wissahickon temperate deciduous forest is an integral part of our campus and science classroom. All Lower School students visit the woods on a regular basis. We go out in all weather and all seasons so that they can see how nature changes throughout the year. There is no bad weather, just bad clothing! Lessons are based around a current theme from the classroom, with room for flexibility depending on what nature provides each day. For example, 2nd grade boys recently learned about how to make shelters using sticks and leaves, which included respectful collection of materials from the woods, as well as the science and engineering around what makes an effective shelter. Each 2nd grade girl recently

visited the tree that she had selected at the start of the year. They study their tree throughout the year, becoming naturalists as they write and draw observations in their journal, tracking how the trees change throughout the seasons.

Third grade boys and girls raise trout and learn about the stream ecology of the Wissahickon. They collect and identify macroinvertebrates from the Wissahickon Creek to learn about food sources for trout. They test the water, both in the creek and in our tank in the classroom, and learn about the “invisible” chemicals in water that can be tested to determine its health. Just because water looks clear does not mean it’s safe to drink, but chemistry can give us clues.

Fourth grade girls conduct a mold experiment as part of their study of cells and microbiology. They learn how to formulate a scientific question, set up and conduct an experiment, and draw conclusions from careful observations and accurate data collection. At the end of their project, the student researchers present their findings to the rest of the class.

Middle School Science Students in Middle School continue to refine and strengthen the basic science practices that they bring from Lower School—skills used by real scientists and engineers. Our inquirybased approach to learning challenges students to design their own investigations by forming hypotheses, investigating in the lab or field, quantifying and analyzing data, and drawing conclusions. These projects involve them in meaningful, open-ended problem solving from designing and constructing passive solar houses, to engineering earthquake-resistant towers. As a result, student interest in science actually grows in Middle School at SCH, bucking the national trends.

As Middle School science teachers, we work to harness and capitalize on the eagerness of students to understand the world around them and interact with it in creative ways. In order to blend the world of science education and student engagement, we create hands-on, minds-on lab investigations and other interactive activities that prioritize building understanding over memorizing facts. With this goal in mind, we create a

classroom environment that supports inquiry and discovery, while engaging the developing minds of various types of learners. Students who regularly collaborate in hands-on activities, such as manipulating atoms and molecules using interactive computer models, and designing and building their own solar cars, tend to love science!

In 7th grade, students participate in the Army Education Outreach Program’s national competition, eCYBERMISSION, in which they must identify an epidemiological problem in their community, develop a possible solution, design an experiment to test that solution, and analyze and present the results. Because this project follows the process done by scientists every day, it exposes students to the “real world” of science, from research through experimentation and analysis.

Students develop a deep understanding of introductory microbiology techniques and experience the setbacks and victories inherent in the inquiry process. The impressive quality of the science done by these middle schoolers is attested by the fact that, for the past two years, SCH students have won first and second place in Pennsylvania.

In 8th grade, students apply their understanding of material science, electrical circuits, Newton’s laws of motion, and forms of energy by designing and building solar-powered cars. Student teams work together to

build, test, and troubleshoot their car. The unit concludes with the annual SCH Solar Car Race, where the fastest cars are able to move on to compete at the Junior Solar Sprint at the Franklin Institute. The unit is a great blend of applied physics engineering, teamwork, and fun!

Upper School Science When college professors and science researchers were asked what students need to be able to do by the time they get to their classes, they all unanimously included: •

Ask thoughtful questions and know how to pursue the answers.

•

Think quantitatively.

•

Work independently and collaborate effectively.

•

Solve problems creatively.

These are the hallmark practices of the Upper School science program and, in fact, our program across all divisions. These practices are intertwined with analyzing real-world scenarios and learning how to make thoughtful decisions relevant to our students’ lives.

Upper School students are offered a rigorous and exciting set of core courses and a wealth of electives designed to engage every student from the future doctor or researcher to the future artist or historian. Opportunities to gain greater exposure for their individually researched and designed class projects are provided through participation in outside competitions such as the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Sciences, Delaware Valley Science Fair, and George Washington Carver Science Fair at which SCH students have won Best of Fair for five of the past six years, earning them the distinction of best science project in the City of Philadelphia.

Students also are offered a full menu of outof-school opportunities, ranging from summer programs working in labs, taking courses at universities, working as part of our SCH science team at the Philadelphia Science Festival, and teaching science at local elementary schools. All Upper School students get a chance to work with local and national scientists and gain exposure to cutting-edge work in various fields through our Kleckner Scientist in Residence program honoring Florence Kleckner, beloved science teacher for over three decades in the 1960s-1980s.

During this annual residency, students learn about the visiting scientist’s current work and passions, work with him or her in collecting and analyzing data using new, state-of-the-art equipment supported by the program, and communicate with the scientist by email when doing follow-up labs.

Students also may have the opportunity to visit the scientist’s lab. Before the residency begins, our Upper School teachers work with the scientist beforehand to design appropriate investigations for the students and develop a process through which the scientist can mentor the students throughout the year.

Two projects typify the teaching and learning that happen in the Upper School science program.

Ninth grade physics students culminate their electricity unit by designing and building an electronic board game. Each team brainstorms a theme, designs the circuit diagram and game board required to accomplish this, and then builds a working game. This electrical engineering project is true open-ended inquiry and requires the students to apply the physics principles they’ve learned. At the end of the project, the 9th graders host a games festival where their creations are tested by our Lower School students.

In 11th grade, our biology students create a cancerprevention public service announcement as the culmination of their DNA, cell division, and cancer unit. They utilize the design-thinking process in targeting a specific age group, selecting a specific type of cancer, and identifying the most appropriate medium for reaching their audience, whether it’s creating a Facebook page, a printed brochure, a blog, a Twitter hashtag, or a YouTube video.

As the culmination of the project, the students present their work to peers and a panel of cancer researchers, doctors, and American Cancer Society social workers.

BLUE DEVILS ATHLETICS

THE ENTHUS ASM FACTOR approach to management sits well with his staff, many of whom are longtimers in the Athletics Department. “Dave’s a guy I look forward to working with every day,” says Ed Aversa, who’s been a football coach and the department’s equipment manager since 2002. “He’s always upbeat, positive, and sees the glass half full. He leads by example but strongly believes in teamwork. In a short time, he’s gotten to know many parents, students, and coaches—a true sign of great leadership.”

Under Wilson’s guidance, and with the momentum of a new, unified management structure that brings boys and girls sports under one leadership, SCH Academy coaches and athletes are feeling the rush of new possibilities. “It’s great to see the enthusiasm with which Dave pursues every aspect of his work,” says Head of School Steve Druggan. “He’s really thrown himself into getting to know our community and implementing our longterm strategic plan for athletics.”

In 2016, the SCH Board of Trustees convened a special task force of trustees, alumni, and parents to explore strategies for strengthening the school’s athletic program. Emerging from this effort was a set of long-term initiatives that are now being implemented by Wilson and his staff. In addition to aligning the program, the task force identified several other needs: (1) adopt an integrated strategy for nurturing SCH students’ athletic potential beginning with a greater focus on skill building in Middle School and an expanded program of clinics and sports camps over the summer; (2) strengthen the coordination between the Admissions Office and the Athletics Department to help identify and attract quality athletic candidates to SCH; (3) pursue fundraising initiatives to ensure that all athletic programs have the coaching, equipment, and budgetary support they need to be successful and to increase financial aid for student-athletes.

CHARACTER FIRST Sitting in his light-filled office in the Vare Field House, Wilson speaks animatedly of his vision for the program and the initiatives he’s launched since his arrival this past July. Being statistically minded, he likes to frame things in numbers. His vision comprises three goals, which complement and support the Board’s strategic initiatives.

First, he’s a strong believer in the educational and characterbuilding benefits of athletics and will focus the SCH program on cultivating sportsmanship, honor, resiliency, and civility.

“I want students to know that how they play a sport is more important than how well they play,” he emphasizes. “When

Wilson brings 28 years of athletic leadership to back up these strategic plan efforts, most recently as AD at Episcopal School of Dallas and prior to that 19 years as AD at Canterbury School in Connecticut and 8 years at Gettysburg College. His team

learning. Encouraging an attitude of self-awareness, continuous learning, and a willingness to receive feedback are hallmarks of the new AD’s management style and what he expects in his coaches as well as himself. “It’s important for coaches never to think they know it all,” says Wilson. “That’s when we get in trouble and lose effectiveness.”

you compete with sportsmanship, you’re honoring the game, your opponent, and the people who played that game in the past. We want excellence in terms of winning, but we’re always mindful that there’s a bigger purpose to students’ participation in athletics.”

Second, he wants to create an environment in which studentathletes can fully develop their potential. That means ensuring that coaching is top level and that students get a solid foundation in multiple sports with ample opportunity to compete and hone their skills. To accomplish this, Wilson is working to realign the program so that Upper School coaches have more of a hand in what’s being taught in the early fundamental years in terms of technique, strategy, and how practices are run. “The theory being,” explains Wilson, “that as the kids work their way up to varsity, they’ll have all the fundamentals in place; they’ll know what the coach expects and what the program expects.”

TWO-WAY COMMUNICATIONS Since his arrival this summer, Wilson has put in place a number of initiatives to strengthen communications between his department and SCH parents and athletes. Wilson believes the athletic program should be a partnership. “We’re all working together to make this the best program it can be and to have the most success we can have,” explains Wilson. Getting valuable feedback is one part of building this partnership, he says. The other is communicating back to the community. “I plan to be more available and approachable, to get out to more games and practices, to make sure people know that I want to talk to them.”

KEEP HUMBLE AND KEEP LEARNING

The third part of his vision concerns program reputation. “I want to build a program here at SCH that’s respected and renowned, not only for its tough, smart play but more importantly, for students’ sportsmanship and their display of humility in victory and grace in defeat.” That’s an important phrase for Wilson, who refers to it often in his conversations. “When I was coaching, I would talk a lot with the kids about having a palms up or palms down attitude. If the palms are up, the message being conveyed is ‘What do you mean? You blew it. What’s going on? I have no control.’ But if the palms are down, the message is, ‘We’ve got this. We’re going to be okay. We’re on top of things.’ Play in the moment and have a short memory is what I tell the kids. I’d rather lose a game and have team play in a palms-down, classy manner. That’s the most important thing to me.”

Wilson’s collegiality and focus on character and effective communication arise from an authentic spirit of humility and gratitude that infuses all his work. More than once during the interview for this article, he paused to express his thanks for the welcome he and his wife have been given by the SCH community and the support he’s received from his staff. “I came into a group of people who are highly professional. They’re teamfirst players, meaning they help out whenever and wherever it’s needed. We have a big program and it only runs smoothly because we’re working together as a team. I’m only one cog in this organization; everyone here does a great job and I want to recognize them as great colleagues. I’m very lucky to have them with me.” This spirit of appreciation seems to go both ways.

“Dave has been very hands on and is always out supporting our coaches and athletes at practices and contests,” says 11th and 12th grade Dean of Students and Head Football Coach Rick Knox. “It’s clear he really cares about our programs and takes pride in their success.“

GO FOR QUALITY Critical to Wilson’s long-term goals for the program is effective, high-quality coaching. “I’m fortunate to have a very good coaching staff here at SCH,” says Wilson. “They’re fun to work with, they want to get better, and I want to help them in their quest to be the best that they can be.” Wilson adds that part of the Athletic Department’s strategic plan is to build awareness of the quality of SCH coaching by providing greater exposure for its coaches through summer sports camps, clinics, and active involvement in the recruitment process. But first, he says, you have to start with the right kind of person.

With boys and girls soccer championships capping his first full season at SCH, the program and the new AD are off to a great start. But pleased as he is with this first-quarter success, Wilson has his eye on a larger prize. “My goal as an athletic director is to give our athletes a great and hopefully lifechanging experience. This goes beyond any seasonal triumphs we may enjoy to the heart of our program and our focus on excellence, meaning, win or lose, we have sportsmanship and are known as a school that plays hard but also plays fair. That, to me, is what I hope every athlete coming through this program will take away from their time on the fields and courts of SCH.”

Wilson says he looks for four qualities in his coaches: an ability to engage and motivate young people; knowledge of their sport’s techniques and strategies; an understanding of educationbased athletics and the SCH mission; and an openness to

Athletics and Admissions are working closely together to identify and attract quality student-athletes. Wilson and his staff and coaches have taken school tours to become better informed about how to promote SCH to prospective student-athletes. College Counseling and Admissions staff have spoken with sports leagues about SCH Academy’s program and the school’s preeminent college counseling services.

Stronger Departmental Communications The department is upping its communications game with a stronger social media presence, including more posts on the Blue Devils Facebook page, a fresh athletic news feed on the school website, and more team tweets. Coaches have been encouraged to communicate regularly via email with parents and students.

sch receives second grant from william b. dietrich foundation

sch’s green efforts get green flag

SCH has received a generous grant from the William B. Dietrich Foundation to renovate the grand entrance of the historic Wissahickon Inn, called the Exchange. Restoration work will begin in June 2018 and be completed by the start of the 2018-2019 school year. The restoration will bring the historic entrance back to its original 19th century glory.

In November, SCH was presented with the National Wildlife Federation’s Eco-Schools USA Green Flag award for its sustainability efforts. SCH is the first Pennsylvania independent school to win this award. At the award ceremony, NWF’s representative said, “SCH staff and students are doing incredible work, and it was really obvious that being a green school is part of the culture. That’s hard to achieve!” This is the third recognition SCH has received for its green efforts. It has a 3-Star Green Restaurant certification and is a 2012 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School.

The Exchange still serves as a primary entrance to the school for students and visitors. Its name derives from the “exchange” of money that took place as the Inn’s hotel guests checked in and out. This entrance and the adjoining front hallways, stretching to the Epiphany Chapel at one end and Henry Library at the other, retain the same dark wood paneling hotel guests would have seen in the 1880s. The rooms off the Exchange, which once housed the bellboy and the reading and smoking rooms, are now home to the Head of School, School Store, and Admissions Offices.

SCH is grateful to the William B. Dietrich Foundation for its previous grant in 2014 to restore the Henry Library. That project was honored by the Chestnut Hill Historical Society in 2015 and the General Building Contractors Association for Best Historic Preservation project in 2015. Additional funds for the Exchange renovation will come from the Class of 2018 senior gift.

first-of-its-kind interactive opera created by sch academy arts chair premieres in new york city The considerable talents of SCH Arts Department Chair and new media composer Ellen Fishman were on display in New York City this winter when her interactive, multimedia opera, Marie Begins, premiered at the Opera America New Works Forum in January. Marie blends elements of traditional live opera with new media technologies in an interactive format enabling audiences to choose the direction of the opera storyline. The creative talents of several of Fishman’s former art and music students have also been involved in the production, including executive producer Simon Rogers ’03, director of online video content Stephen Skeel ’13, choreographer for the video segments Kalila Kingsford Smith ’08, and jazz bassist for the live performance Doug Drewes ’01. SCH music faculty and Springside alumna Meghan Rogers sang in the chorus of the live performance at Opera America in NYC. Last year, Fishman received an Opera America Opera Grant for Female Composers to develop the piece. An online pilot of the opera will debut in late February.

This past October, Megan Monaghan, general and choral music teacher at SCH, sang the lead in the North American premiere of Riccardo Zandonai’s opera Il Grillo del Focolare with the orchestra and cast of Teatro Grattacielo, which brings rarely heard Italian operas from the 1890s to 1930s to American audiences.

sch takes paisaa double crown with wins by girls and boys soccer teams Girls varsity soccer coach Maria Kosmin realized she had something special right from the start. “With this team, not one time did I ever have to address attitude or effort.

Every time they came out to play, they came out like it was a championship game. I knew this team could be the one to make program history.”

In a historic first for the Pennsylvania Independent School Athletic Association (PAISAA), one school claimed both the boys and girls soccer championships this fall. That school was Springside Chestnut Hill Academy. Our varsity teams were strong throughout their seasons, the boys finishing with a 19-3-2 record and an Inter-Ac Championship (over Malvern 2-1) and the girls with a season total of 17-3-1. At PAISAA, the boys overcame the Hill School 2-0 and the girls shut out Episcopal 1-0 to earn the state championships.

“The character of the team was clear from day one of preseason,” recalled boys varsity soccer coach Brian Zalasky.

“They were all what I call ‘both and’ players­—supportive and competitive, playing both as a team and as individuals. They showed great composure,” he added, “focusing on what they can control rather than a ref’s call or a competitor’s comments.

That enabled their skill, talent, and ability to shine.”

“It takes a combination of qualities to make a championship team—wonderful athletes, good coaching, a great esprit de corps, and a little bit of luck,” said CHA Athletic Hall of Fame soccer coach Jim Talbot. “Both of these teams were championship worthy.”

henry library’s violet oakley mural gets wider exposure

The Oakley triptych depicts three biblical stories intended to inspire students. The first panel evokes the virtue of courage and shows David defeating Goliath; the second panel speaks to learning and teaching and portrays a young Jesus speaking with the wise men in the Temple of Jerusalem; and the third panel, representing the virtue of service, portrays David, as an elder king, speaking with his son Solomon about the temple that he will build.

This past fall, the treasured Henry Library mural that for more than 110 years has watched over the studious pursuits of our students was loaned to the Woodmere Art Museum in Chestnut Hill as part of an ambitious retrospective exhibition of works

by Philadelphia artist Violet Oakley. The empty space left by the Oakley mural was temporarily filled by another more contemporary triptych by Philadelphia digital artist Matthew Borgen, who was the 2016-2017 Springside Class of 1957 Artist in Residence and displayed his artwork in the Barbara Crawford Gallery. The contrast between the two works of art, both inspired by the same biblical stories, offered a thought-provoking example of the differences in artistic vision and the changes in artistic media over the past 100 years.

phase ii of sch academy’s campus master plan launches with major gift from the mccausland family foundation In September 2017, the SCH Academy Board of Trustees approved plans to begin Phase II of the school’s Campus Master Plan, the centerpiece of which is a new, contemporary building for Lower School boys and girls. This building will be called the McCausland Lower School & Commons, named after the McCausland family, which provided a $5 million gift to the school via the McCausland Family Foundation.

The McCausland Lower School & Commons will house students in Pre-K through 4th grade. The learning experience will remain single-sex, with gender- and age-specific classrooms, while leveraging the benefits of shared common and cooperative space and access to outdoor learning areas.

Perched on 10 acres of SCH Academy woods adjacent to the Wissahickon Watershed, the McCausland Lower School & Commons has been designed to showcase SCH Academy’s standout educational program that has propelled the school to the forefront of educational thought and best practice.

“A new, modern building for our youngest students will further enhance their learning experience at our school,” said Steve Druggan, Head of School. “This space is designed to showcase SCH’s standout educational program, one that is forwardthinking and nurturing, and will serve as the latest example of SCH’s position as a leader in educational thought and practice.”

In 2012, the Board of Trustees of SCH Academy established an ambitious and comprehensive multi-phase, multi-year redesign of the school’s 62-acre campus, including new construction,

facility renovation, redistribution of the academic divisions, and improved traffic flow and parking. Phase I of the Campus Master Plan, called “Common Ground,” was completed in October 2014 and encompasses an athletic complex, significant stormwater management, the Steel Sports Pavilion, and Maguire Stadium as the chief accomplishments.

“Throughout the last four decades, Bonnie and Peter McCausland have been leading supporters at Springside School, Chestnut Hill Academy, and now Springside Chestnut Hill Academy,” said Richard Hayne, SCH Board Chair and Founder, URBN. “Likewise, Bonnie, Peter, and their family recognize the importance of making a commitment of this magnitude to our new Lower School, which is critical to delivering our mission.

We are immensely grateful.”

The McCausland family has already supported several previous capital projects at the school, including the McCausland Dining Pavilion and the McCausland Squash Courts. Peter served on the Board of Trustees at Springside School, and Bonnie served on the Chestnut Hill Academy Board of Trustees. Both Chris and Elizabeth are “lifers” of the school, graduating in 2000 and 2002, respectively.

“It was a family decision led by my children, Chris and Lizzie, who have many fond memories of their days at CHA and Springside,” said Peter McCausland, Chairman and CEO of Airgas. “This gift is a vote of confidence in the school and its administration and a sincere thank you to the people who make

With the McCausland gift and other monies that have been contributed toward this project, SCH has raised 90 percent of the funds needed for the $34 million capital campaign and is continuing its Phase II fundraising efforts.

DESCRIBE YOUR VENTURE AND ITS CURRENT STAGE ELiTE (Emerging Leaders in Technology and Engineering Inc.) is a growth-stage community-based youth-development organization that uses STEM education to empower students from underserved communities to realize their academic and career potential. ELiTE partners with public schools to increase their capacity to deliver engaging STEM programs as part of their regular curriculum. ELiTE’s programs develop leadership skills while promoting creative problem solving, computational thinking, and social responsibility using hands-on engineering and code-writing projects.

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR YOUR VENTURE?

RISING STAR. This past fall, Chelsey was one of

two honorees to receive The Evelyn Kamen Rising Star Award from the FIRST organization for his work to promote STEM skills among students from underserved communities. The other nominee that night ... former President Barack Obama. Chelsey is pictured here with his grandmother and Obama.

ELiTE was inspired by a trip to Ghana in 2009 when I and some classmates from Columbia Engineering received a $10,000 grant and chose to run a month-long, hands-on summer camp for senior high school students near an Engineers Without Borders village in Ghana’s Eastern Region. Over the next few years, ELiTE’s summer camps grew from a rural village in Ghana to university campuses in Ghana, Jamaica, Mexico, and New York, facilitating labs and coursework in everything from software engineering to chemical processes. In 2013, after three years of working in one of America’s lowest-performing

high schools, I decided to expand ELiTE’s mission to inspire and empower low-opportunity students from resource-limited communities, initially in New York City, through science, technology, engineering, and math education. There are simply too many high potential students who may never have the opportunity to realize their dreams as a result of years of poor education.

FOUNDER AND CEO OF MILKCRATE

WHAT HAS BEEN/WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU FACED IN BRINGING YOUR VENTURE TO LIFE? One of the biggest challenges that I have faced in trying to grow my venture has been securing enough resources to grow ELiTE in a way that is aligned with my vision for the organization. Every stakeholder has their own slightly different vision for impact.

Finding alignment among the agendas of funders and the needs of my organization can be tricky. Learning to say no to expensive money or to resources that will ultimately cost you more than you’ll gain is a challenge, especially when resources are limited.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE MOST IMPORTANT QUALITY FOR AN ENTREPRENEUR TO HAVE AND WHY? HOW DID THIS QUALITY PLAY INTO THE DEVELOPMENT OF YOUR OWN VENTURE?

BEHAVIOR CHANGER. Morgan was included on the Forbes “Under 30” and “Young Involved Philadelphia” lists in 2015 and on the United Nations Foundation’s list of “Top Ten Female Entrepreneurs to Watch.“

The most important quality for an entrepreneur to have is GRIT. Every successful entrepreneur has failed to meet their goals more times than they can remember. At times it can be difficult to continue moving forward in the face of failure, but with grit, confidence, and an unmatched work ethic, you will always have more wins than losses.

DESCRIBE YOUR VENTURE AND ITS CURRENT STAGE MilkCrate is kind of like a Fitbit for doing good. We help corporations, schools, nonprofits, and other large groups turn their social and environmental impact goals into measurable behavior challenges in a customizable and gamified app.

Whether it is thousands of employees or hundreds of students, our clients’ users are able to compete, earn points, and win prizes using our custom platform. One great example is The Cultural Alliance. They use their MilkCrate app to engage 20,000 low-income students in going to more museums and to track their visits. SCH Academy students in the Venture Incubator program are using the app to boost school spirit and student attendance at school events. The use cases are endless.

User engagement data is turned into instant stats for the client.

The groups’ impactful behavior-change stats are then used for reporting, marketing, and benchmarking.

DID ANY EXPERIENCES AT CHA INSPIRE YOUR ENTREPRENEURIAL VENTURE OR HELP PREPARE YOU TO PURSUE YOUR VENTURE? Entrepreneurship programs at SCH did not exist when I was a student. CHA did have Micro Society for grades 3-5 when I was in Lower School, but I was a part of Student Council back then and did not have the opportunity to create and sell goods on Micro Market Days. In middle and high school, I was involved with robotics and service clubs and activities. Volunteering in the Wissahickon with Mr. Ervin and at United Cerebral Palsy of Pennsylvania with Mr. Theuer helped develop my passion for and commitment to service. Additionally, building robots with Mr. Ervin and Mr. Randall showed me just how cool and how powerful engineering can be.

Since our 2014 launch, MilkCrate has received invites to the Governor’s Mansion and White House, pitched on the Forbes “Under 30” stage, landed big corporate social impact clients, was recognized as Startup of the Year, and even earned praise from the UN Foundation.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SCH ACADEMY’S WOULD-BE ENTREPRENEURS?

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR YOUR VENTURE?

Entrepreneurship is a hard and often lonely journey, but passion is what helps us persevere. Always remember to stay true to your beliefs. If you believe that your product or program is needed and works, be willing to do it whether or not someone supports you.

Eventually, they will, even if you don’t have support today.

My path up until (and including) now has been in no way linear.

When I was about 25 and a few years into the “real world” I kept asking myself, “What do I want to do with my life?” I knew I cared about using my time on earth to do something meaningful for others, and I knew I loved design. So I did research about how design is used

to improve lives. I learned about LEED buildings, alternative currencies, co-operatively owned companies, renewable energy, and cradle-to-cradle products. Getting a master of science degree in Sustainable Design at Philadelphia University [now Thomas Jefferson University] ultimately emerged as the answer, but it took four years to materialize. Today my career choices allow me to serve my community and our planet, while getting back to the work that nourishes me.

But it wasn’t easy finding my way on this new path. Whether eating local food, composting with worms, biking to work, planting a small communal garden, my new commitment took effort, knowledge, and motivation. All of this opened my eyes to an important if not obvious realization: If everyone was going to start living their values, there had to be an easy, communal way to do it. While I was in grad school, my master’s thesis morphed into a business that today is called MilkCrate. We help for- and non-profit clients share their values in measureable and fun ways. My journey of discovery has led to an ironically selfish, selfless way to live and to lead.

ENJOY THIS MOMENT, THIS LIFE, THIS BUSINESS, BECAUSE OTHERWISE, WHY DO IT?

IS THERE ANY TRADITION OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP OR INNOVATION IN YOUR FAMILY?

My entrepreneurial journey began before I was born. My mom was part of the farm-to-table movement in Philadelphia in the late 1970s and early 1980s. She quit her job as administrative assistant to the managing director of the City of Philadelphia, working her way up from dishwasher to head chef. She then wrote and self-published a successful book rating and reviewing thrift stores in the Tri-state area. As I grew up, I watched my mom build her company from scratch into a thriving and fun family business. Teen flashback? I remember being mortified by her company sign emblazoned on our family van, when Mom pulled up to the drive-through at the old Springside Middle School entrance to pick me up from school.

I got to watch my dad grow his private practice and research foundation, treating people with brain injury or mental illness while under-resourced and dependent on donors to help make a difference. Second teen flashback? Rolling my eyes at all his wires, goops, and caps used in the early days of neurofeedback research. Turns out he was a pioneer in the field.

With all this entrepreneurial activity going on in my family, it’s probably no surprise that I wanted nothing more to do with the tough life of entrepreneurship as well as no surprise that I’ve gone and started a company anyway. In fact, MilkCrate is my second sustainable startup business. My first? A fashion company my mom and I set up in our basement. We scrounged thrift shops for handbags and decorative vintage materials. We brainstormed, designed, cut, glued, and sold.

In my junior year, my art teacher at the time, Mrs. MossVreeland, was very supportive. My bags were displayed in the hallway outside the auditorium at Springside. By chance one day Margaret Hayne, then the head buyer for women’s apparel at Anthropologie and wife to SCH Board Chair Dick Hayne, was walking by and dropped her card in the display and wrote on it “call me.” This was my first taste of the entrepreneurial rush.

A very real and very BIG potential customer! Flash forward a few weeks and I’m at a meeting in the old Anthropologie headquarters. Score! I sold several of our bags. I think I got a check for something like $700 dollars for six bags. At the time this felt huge! Later? Looking back I realized this could have been a much bigger opportunity had I had the business smarts to handle it. But I was off to college and on to my next adventure.

WHAT WAS THE FIRST THING YOU DID TO GET YOUR VENTURE STARTED, E.G., SIT DOWN AND MAKE A TO-DO LIST, BUY SUPPLIES, MAKE PHONE CALLS? WHY DID YOU DO THIS FIRST? I knew I would need help with the tech piece so I did some research around tech meetups and learned about Code for Philly. This was my entré into the startup community. The people I met there helped me find other places to network and the teammates that would eventually help me build my company. Later, after we learned about the huge need for employee engagement and CSR data tracking in the corporate world, I blinked again, took a deep breath, and made a radical business model pivot, one that would launch us into the B2B software world. This was only possible by convening all the advisors I had acquired over the year and hiring a facilitator to help guide us as we undertook a major rewriting of our business model and product. We then spent months interviewing prospective clients, learning what they needed, all while building the tech based on their feedback. It was a constant loop of learn, design, build. A loop that we continue to this day.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SCH ACADEMY’S WOULD-BE ENTREPRENEURS? Always, always, always find a good mentor. Find someone who has achieved some version of what you hope to achieve in business and then latch onto them. Tight.

The second tip ties in with the first. Listen to your mentor! They have years of experience that you can benefit from. Why make mistakes that you can avoid? You will make plenty more without meaning to.

And the third builds on the first two. Are you stuck? Have you hit a wall? Spend more time understanding the problem you want to solve. And then really truly research existing solutions. I meet so many founders who are in love with a solution that maybe doesn’t have a real problem, or equally unfortunate, a solution that already exists in a much more developed form that they haven’t bothered to find.

So be honest with yourself, with your team, and with your KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators). Really know what motivates you and what your needs are. If you keep those aligned, you are much more likely to work more effectively. Being honest with your team is equally crucial. Why? Because if they trust you, they will stick with you through the scary times. And there will be many of those.

CO-FOUNDER, BARCODE EXPERIENCES

Being honest with your KPIs means knowing what success looks like and being honest with yourself and your team and your investors if you aren’t there yet. If you aren’t there yet, and you know it, you can ask questions and test out new solutions.

Otherwise you could be needlessly caught in a loop of selfdenial, enduring a self-imposed, self-limiting blind spot. Hiding your head in the sand will just keep propelling you down the wrong path. You may need to do an end run or a pivot. You may even need to start over. I have….

So from what I’ve experienced, the general skill set required to be a (hopefully) successful CEO is not necessarily about being popular, or maintaining a high GPA, or getting an MBA from an Ivy League School. They can help. But it’s about internalizing your own hard-won life lessons. For me this has been about facing down fear. Do not be afraid. Have fun. Help others. Be honest.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE MOST IMPORTANT QUALITY FOR AN ENTREPRENEUR TO HAVE AND WHY? HOW DID THIS QUALITY PLAY INTO THE DEVELOPMENT OF YOUR OWN VENTURE?

The most consistently identified traits I hear expressed by those on their way to or at the top of their field is determination and grit. And I have to say that this feels true to me now, too.

There have been so many moments when I could have given up. I could have allowed an event like a teammate leaving or financial constraints or technical failures as a reason or justification to give up, to close it down, to walk away. But then I remember how badly I wanted to solve that problem or how much I loved working with my team. So I kept going. I took that next step. And somehow, we—I—keep going. And the answers, the solutions show up.

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR YOUR VENTURE? My partner, Jake Webster, and I attend many sporting events throughout each year. Each game brings us excitement and happiness, and while attending sporting events last year, we began to think about all of the families that get overlooked. These families are normally doing all right but recently have been going through hardships, such as losing a job, house, or even a family member. After thinking about this, Jake and I researched the effects that sporting events had on people and discovered that they reduce violence, improve one’s will to learn, and create a bond that is unbreakable. Knowing all of this, we were then motivated to create our non-profit organization, Barcode Experiences, providing free attendance to a sports event for children undergoing a financial or emotional hardship.

So? Deep breathe, like my dad always says. Enjoy this moment, this life, this business, because otherwise, why do it? Look for the joy and the impact and the creativity in the process. Let these be enough, be the reasons to keep doing, keep going, keep trying to hit that goal. To take the next step. Do the next meeting. Make the next phone call. Do the next interview. Make the next speech. Sit on the next panel. Pitch a room full of investors. Close a sale.

WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO THE VENTURE INCUBATOR (CELVI) PROGRAM? We were attracted to the Venture Incubator program by the endless possibilities that it presented. During our time at SCH, we had always seen students enter the CEL Venture Incubator program and heard nothing but positive results.

We thought, why not try to enter the program ourselves and see where we could take our ideas?

WHAT WAS THE MOST HELPFUL THING YOU LEARNED FROM YOUR CELVI EXPERIENCE? The most helpful thing was to always fight through and find solutions when suffering setbacks. The CELVI experience taught us to not just complain when we have a problem, but to find a solution in order to improve our organization. This lesson is something that we can use not just for the CEL Venture Incubator program, but for the rest of our life.

WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART OF DEVELOPING YOUR VENTURE IDEA? The hardest part was the lack of money and resources. Many non-profit organizations receive large donations or receive support from celebrities. Starting out as a very small non-profit organization, it was difficult to partner and connect with large corporations. In order to improve our reputation, Jake and I had to work extremely hard and always be 100% prepared when talking about our charity.

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR YOUR VENTURE? Our venture idea came to me and my partner, Sophie Plotkin, after founding a babysitting training club at school in the fall of last year. We saw that there was a disconnect between the babysitters of the high school and the parents of the Lower School and saw an opportunity to connect these two groups and create an innovative and accessible platform for parents to find

and book babysitters from the high school. We created SitterBook, which is a website platform where parents in SCH can find trustworthy and reliable babysitters from the high school, see their qualifications, and book them online. All of the sitters on the site are trained in our own babysitting club on everything from different scenarios to how to make a babysitting resume!

WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO THE VENTURE INCUBATOR PROGRAM? We didn’t have any ideas on what kind of platform we wanted to make, so we knew that we needed guidance and mentors to help us mature the small idea we had to a realistic and feasible business. We knew that the Venture Incubator could give that to us. It just seemed like the right thing to do!

IS THERE ANY TRADITION OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP OR INNOVATION IN YOUR FAMILY? My dad has always been someone who loves to fix things that are broken. When he was younger, he used to buy houses and fix them up and then sell them. He has always taught me to be innovative and do things on my own.

WHAT WAS THE MOST HELPFUL THING YOU LEARNED FROM YOUR CELVI EXPERIENCE? The most helpful thing that I learned from the CELVI experience was that entrepreneurs have to be resilient. They have to learn to deal with tough situations and take on any problem that comes their way. After we had finished CELVI, we continued to work on SitterBook in our free time. One of the hardest situations that we had to deal with was developing our website. We thought it would take about two months, but it ended up taking about six months. We ran into many technical problems with our website that we had to work with our developer to fix. Both Sophie and I were frustrated that all of the work and time that we had put into our business didn’t seem to be visible in our product. We continue to run into problems that our mentors help us to tackle in realistic ways. Every day Sophie and I learn something new about ourselves and how we can constantly improve our business tactics, marketing strategies, customer service strategies, and website functionality.

WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART OF DEVELOPING YOUR VENTURE IDEA? The hardest part of developing the venture was managing our time being a full-time student and starting a business. Sophie and I both ran into this problem, especially taking on CELVI in the fall of our junior year, which was a very chaotic year. We have decided to work on SitterBook as an independent study project, so we now have time built into our schedule to work on SitterBook three times a week. This has helped us a lot, because we now have scheduled time to continue our work.

CampusSelect has already helped many students find their best-fit school, and I am excited to help even more high schoolers make the right college decision.

HAS YOUR CELVI EXPERIENCE CHANGED WHAT YOU THINK YOU WOULD LIKE TO DO IN COLLEGE AND/OR BEYOND? CELVI has made me realize that I want to study business in college next year. I have always seen myself as having an entrepreneurial spirit, but CEL has really made me realize that I have a passion for business too. I plan on studying business administration with a focus in entrepreneurship at Fordham University’s Gabelli School of Business, and Sophie plans on double majoring in communications and marketing at Elon University’s School of Communications.

WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO THE VENTURE INCUBATOR PROGRAM? I started getting involved in business and entrepreneurship a few years ago. My first experience with the Venture Incubator was sophomore year when I switched to SCH. I was eager to have the chance to do a bit of everything: marketing, design, research, analyzing data, prototyping, pitching, etc. For years, I have been thinking of different business ideas and inventions and the Incubator provided me with the opportunity to execute— the most important part of entrepreneurship.

WHAT WAS THE MOST HELPFUL THING YOU LEARNED FROM YOUR CELVI EXPERIENCE? This year, in particular, as I am running my own company, I have learned about management and structure and what is needed to create an effective team. Managing a team can be difficult and there is no right way to do so. You really have to experiment until you find the perfect way to both incentivize your team and organize your company structure.

WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART OF DEVELOPING YOUR VENTURE IDEA? The hardest part was organizing the company and the product.

The company was put together very quickly so I am working to make many of the structures currently in place more scalable and efficient for the future, which has been a difficult task.

HAS YOUR CELVI EXPERIENCE CHANGED WHAT YOU THINK YOU WOULD LIKE TO DO IN COLLEGE AND/OR BEYOND? Developing the entrepreneurial mindset has been helpful for me, both in the field of business and beyond. I look at the world differently, constantly trying to seek out problems and find solutions. I am always thinking of ways in which I can improve or re-create the current processes out there. I have become fascinated by corporate innovation and the startup culture and want to learn more about those topics as I begin college. Although I am not yet positive of my path in life, I am confident it will be closely related to the world of business and am excited to keep exploring my passion.

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR YOUR VENTURE? In my junior year, I started the college process. I began developing my initial list of schools and went on a few college visits. I quickly became frustrated by the costly college trips and realized I did not have enough time to visit every school on my list. I also realized that the information sessions and campus tours only provided me with surface-level, often biased, information. They did not show me what it was actually like to be a student at each school. I quickly found that talking to current students was the best way to get accurate and honest information about a school.

I could ask them any question and receive unbiased and authentic information. They helped me by talking through many of my concerns—about the school and the college process as a whole.

I created CampusSelect to give every prospective student the opportunity to speak directly with current undergraduates at their desired schools to get an unvarnished view of what life is truly like at that college. For an affordable price, students can

guide made by combining every student’s work. This is based on the idea that connection, creation, and collaboration are the three most vital learning skills to study a unit.

WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO THE VENTURE INCUBATOR PROGRAM? What really drew me to the Venture Incubator is the fact that they aren’t only encouraging kids to find innovative, interesting solutions to the everyday problems they see around them but also giving them a chance and a direct opportunity to make change happen. You really don’t see that a lot. The VI takes away all notions of ageism and the idea that someone can be too young to create something to benefit both themselves and others by giving kids a stage to stand tall and pitch their businesses, a projector to supplement their pitches with facts, and a microphone to show their persistence and drive. Thus, the VI seemed to be the perfect opportunity to launch a business and be supported by encouraging, experienced teachers.

WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART OF DEVELOPING YOUR VENTURE IDEA?

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR YOUR VENTURE? Throughout my experiences as an impassioned learner and avid study-buddy, I have become frustrated by the average high school student’s tendency to rotely memorize terms and definitions in order to quickly “learn” material with the hopes of doing well on an assessment, either through websites like Quizlet or through flashcards. Students gravitate to memorization because it is the least time-consuming option. These students choosing to temporarily memorize sheets of information aren’t fully learning or understanding the material on which they’re being tested because mindless memorization does not provoke thought. I was determined to create a time-efficient and effective online resource to help students study easily. NeuronFive is a web-based platform that facilitates learning through the use of user-friendly drag-and-drop conceptualization tools, such as concept maps, causes and effects, similarities and differences, timelines, and diagrams. Teachers can track students’ study sets to ensure they are focusing on the correct material, and once every student in a class has submitted their study set, the entire class will be able to view a class-collaborative study

The main piece of constructive criticism I received from the judges at Demo Day became the most difficult task to overcome: specificity. For a while, I had a backbreaking time finding visual and tangible ways to showcase my idea for NeuronFive because even though I made my concepts clear, the website was nowhere near developed. I spent a week working on a detailed wireframe (a graphical layout of what a website will look like) without any of the code or programming, so I could present my product in a clearer, more specific way.

THE VI TAKES AWAY ALL NOTIONS OF AGEISM AND THE IDEA THAT SOMEONE CAN BE TOO YOUNG TO CREATE SOMETHING TO BENEFIT BOTH THEMSELVES AND OTHERS.

HAS YOUR CELVI EXPERIENCE CHANGED WHAT YOU THINK YOU WOULD LIKE TO DO IN COLLEGE AND/OR BEYOND? Most definitely! After having the opportunity to be submerged in the world of business, I now know that I’d love to pursue a career in advertising and marketing. I became fascinated with exploring the fun and creative ways to convince a group of people to invest their time and dollars into something you’re selling. I’d love to do market research and create eye-catching ad campaigns for different companies.

The obituary was written by her cousin and fellow Hollywood screenwriter, Ned Nalle ’72: “Jackson “Jackie” Hunsicker, who co-wrote the screenplay for Ten Little Indians, which starred Donald Pleasence and Brenda Vaccaro in a 1989 big-screen adaptation of the famed Agatha Christie novel, has died. She was 69. Hunsicker died Friday in Studio City after a recurring battle with cancer. Hunsicker also wrote and directed The

Frog Prince (1988), starring

Helen Hunt, and Oddball Hall (1990), a comedy starring Don Ameche and Burgess Meredith. Those films, as well as Ten Little Indians, were made for the Cannon Group.

She also wrote for the 1995 ABC series The Marshal, starring Jeff Fahey.

Hunsicker also was the co-founder of the nonprofit organization Reading Glass Project, which asks travelers to Third World countries to purchase reading glasses from RGP and give them to local folks in need. The initiative has benefited thousands of people.

She was married and divorced from the late Christopher Pearce, a former head of production at Cannon, and director Leon Ichaso.

A native of Philadelphia, Hunsicker attended the Springside School in her hometown and New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. She worked in New York City and San Francisco before heading to Los Angeles.

Survivors include her brother J. Freedley Hunsicker Jr., her sister Louisa Pierson and her nieces and nephews Lissa, Maree, Louise, Jack, Mia, Jesse, Sabina, Trip and Jake. Over Thanksgiving, Victoria Roebuck had the opportunity to spend 10 days traveling through South Africa. She writes, ”It was one of the most amazing experiences I’ve had and by far my favorite country I’ve been to in the world. I spent my first three days at Kruger National Park where I did a Safari! After three long days of fighting jetlag in the wild with my favorite animals, I returned to the Johannesburg/Pretoria area to experience the local culture and learn more about the history of the country. I toured the Apartheid Museum where I learned more about Nelson Mandela’s life and spent a day at the University of Pretoria, where my brother, Chelsey ’06, was teaching a coding class to middle and high school students. This was his third trip to South Africa. (See profile of Chelsey’s business, ELiTE, on page 14.) It warmed my heart to see how excited the students were to learn about computer science and all the doors that can open for them with a deeper education.

Thanksgiving morning we traveled to Cape Town where we spent the long weekend exploring their beautiful beaches and breathtaking views from their hilly neighborhoods, hiking Table Mountain, and touring the Winelands. There is so much beauty, culture, and history in South Africa. I encourage anyone who gets a chance to visit. You won’t regret it!”

Cocoa Press is a 3D printer, that prints chocolate. [Evan developed the prototype for his press while at SCH.] Evan says, “It takes Hershey bars and melts them down, then prints them into any shape. So far, my favorite thing to make is a vase. The machine cools the chocolate right away, so the machine can do a lot of complex 3D geometry. I use six Peltier coolers. They get hot on one side and cold on the other. Water cools the hot side so that the chocolate

The alumni rowers spoke to parents, fellow alumni, coaches, and friends about their love of the sport and how lessons of perseverance and dedication have translated to their personal and professional lives. All three have long resumés of rowing success, including competition in world championships and the Olympics. The fundraising goal is $60,000 to purchase two lightweight girls quads, one lightweight boys double, and one heavyweight boys double. Efforts to date have yielded $45,000. Mary Markloff Beatty ’82, Cherie York Bowen ’82, and Holly Sorokin Utt ’82 all wrote to identify the girls in the leaves photo from the summer/fall issue. “The mystery photo is from a hockey game, either before or after a game,” says Mary. The girls in the photo are, to the best of their collective recollection: front row: Patty Rachofsky ’82, Jennifer Sargent Clayson ’82, Jen Myers ’82, Mary Markloff Beatty’82, Nina McDowell ’82, Edith Castor ’83, Leslie Gillin Bohner ’83, face hidden, and Leslie Klenk Gastonguay’82. Identification of the girls in the back row was more tentative: Aline Cortese ’92, Maria Rendon-Labadan ’82 or Beth Cooke(?), Holly Sorokin Utt ’82, Ellen O’Rourke ’83 or Laura Maine ’82, and Anna Cooke Woodward ’82 or Monica Rose Hustead’83 (?).

Cynthia Morrow O’Keefe ’72, writes to say that the picture from the Winter 2017 issue of the girls holding the large globe is her class. She believes this happened in the spring of 1972.
