Speak up
written by Shabana Hussain Illustrated by Mariam Aldacher
Sami
Every morning he would get up very slowly, he would get ready even slower and arrive at school late. Sami was a quiet boy and he didn’t have any real friends. The other children would tease him which would make his ears and face feel hot. Sami didn’t like going to school.
In the playground Sami would watch the other children play. At lunchtime he would eat by himself. In the reading corner he would sit on his own.
On Monday morning, Mrs Patel introduced a new boy from Zimbabwe, called Gamba.
Mrs Patel told the class she wanted everyone to be patient with him because he was new.
Sami was curious about the new boy’s name. He’d never heard of the name Gamba before. He’d also never heard of Zimbabwe before. He wondered where that was in the world. Gamba caught Sami’s eye and gave him a little smile.
“I am disappointed Year 2,” Mrs Patel said. “Is this how we make someone feel welcomed?”
But this time when he spoke, he didn’t have a strange feeling in his tummy and his ears didn’t feel hot. This time it felt easier to speak up.
The class was quiet. Sami looked at Gamba and said, “I love cake too!”
“In our school,” Mrs Patel continued, “we don’t laugh at differences, we...” “CELEBRATE THEM!” the class shouted in unison. “Chikenduza looks yummy,” said Sami. “It is!” beamed Gamba. “My Ambuya makes the best.”
