Introduction We are class 4A in Hägerstenshamnens skola in Stockholm. This is our book about what we think about Sweden's capital city, Stockholm. In this book you can read about buildings, places and activities in Stockholm. In Stockholm you can find everything, from sports arenas to shopping malls. Alma, Emelie, Emil, Emma, Florian, Katrine, Lukas, Mark, Rebecka, Sami, Viktor and Wilmer
Winterviken Alfred Nobel had a factory here, made of bricks and built in 1891. The factory produced dynamite. The building is situated in Winterviken/Vinterviken. This area is famous for its dynamite factory but now it is also known for its party room, café, and conference centre. These sit in a building called Vinterviken, which is named after the area.
Jazz-funk Jazz-funk is a mixture of jazz and funk. Jazz comes from early 1910 in New Orleans. Jazz is a mixture of blues, folk dance, marching music and ragtime. To dance jazz dance you need to dare to ”show yourself” because it is a very physical dance style.
Funk is a more a name than a style. You could say that my dance style is a bit hip-hop. I recommend trying it out if you want to make new friends and have fun. Alma
Tele2 Arena Tele2 Arena, which is also called Stockholm Arena, is in Johanneshov in south Stockholm, just a few hundred metres from Globen. Building on the stadium began in 2010 and was finished three years later, in 2013. The building costs came to 2.7 billion Swedish crowns.
The building is approximately 240 metres long and between 140 and 180 metres wide due to its oval shape. It is half as tall as Globen on the outside, about 35 metres, but because it is built down in the ground, it is actually 42 metres high on the inside from floor to roof.
The roof is movable and can be opened and closed. The stadium has an advanced lighting system which allows everything to be lit up on the outside in different colours at nighttime, for example yellow, red and blue when Djurgården play a match there or green and white when Hammarby play.
Ice hockey Ice hockey is a team sport that is played on ice. You need ice skates, a hockey stick, a helmet, two goals, and a puck. There are five outfield players and a goalkeeper in every team. A match is played in three periods of 20 minutes and the team that scores most goals is the winner. Ice hockey has been played since the 1850s. The first real match was played in Canada in 1855. In 1893 the first Stanley Cup was played which is a competition that is played in Canada even today. In 1917 the National Hockey League, NHL, was created. It is the biggest and best hockey league in the world and is shared between Canada and the USA. In total there are almost 2 million hockey players around the world so it is not a very big sport.
Because the sport began in Canada, their national team was the best in the World Championships and Olympic Games, all the way through to the 1950s. Then the Soviet Union (nowadays Russia) became almost unbeatable for many years. By the 1980s, Canada, Sweden, and some other countries could win championships again, sometimes. Today it is fairly equal amongst the teams. The world's best player ever is called Wayne Gretzky and he comes from Canada. The best Swedish player ever is probably Peter Forsberg. Sweden's biggest ice hockey stadium is called Globen and is where Sweden usually play their matches.
Emelie
The Post House
The Post House in Solna is the headquarters of the company Postnord. The building was designed by the architect Lise-Lott Söderlund. The building is also called 'The Ark' because it is similar to Noah's Ark. The official inauguration of the building was on February 12th 2004. Inside The Ark, the bottom floors are open to the public but the upper floors are offices. On the public floors there is a café and a restaurant.
Royal Tennis Hall The Royal Tennis Hall hosts the Stockholm Open tennis tournament in the middle of October every year. During the rets of the year anyone can play tennis here. The architect who designed the building is Sture Frölén. The tennis hall is to be found at Lidingövägen 75. In our part of Stockholm it is also possible to play tennis. I play in Mälarhöjdens tennis hall four times a week. To play tennis you need to hit a ball over a net with a tennis racket. I think that tennis is really fun. The first time I played tennis was with my father when I was four years old. Straight away I thought it was fun and played one more time before I started to train regularly when I was six years old.
Emil
Stockholm City Hall
In the City Hall there are often large gatherings, for example the big dinner on Nobel day, in December every year. The City Hall was built using 8 million bricks, the architect is called Ragnar Östberg. The City Hall is known for being Sweden's fourth tallest tower. It has a tower that is 106 metres high and bears the 'Three Crowns' coat of arms. The City Hall was opened on midsummer's day of 1923, it took fifteen years to build. You can visit Stockholm City Hall at Hantverkargatan 1.
Riding The fun thing about this sport is that if you get a horse or start at riding school, then you have something fun to do, because it is a fun and good thing to ride. Horses and riding in general cost a lot of money but it is worth it!
There are more than 331 different breeds of horse and there are more than 190 000 people who ride in Sweden. There are approximately 1000 riding schools in Sweden/The World. Riding happens at riding schools, in a riding barn, at a competition, or in a paddock. A paddock is a large field where one practices riding. There are many different things one needs to take care of a horse, for example saddle, blanket, helmet, a horse, a brush, a hoof scraper and riding clothes. Emma
”Plattan” in Sergels Square
Plattan is in the middle of Stockholm. It is right next to many big roads around Sergels Square. For example Queen's Road and Klaraberg Road. Plattan is an outdoors area next to the Central Station. Many activities are held there with a very specific message. For example, people sometimes set up tents there and make a demonstration. Close to Plattan there is also the Culture House where many people come every day to shop, read, rent, and much more.
Table Tennis
Table tennis is a sport which is well know throughout the world, but it is most fun in Stockholm, at least it is for me. Table tennis, or 'pingis', is based on a very simple idea. You hit the ball over a net which is pulled tight over a table, and on the other side the ball is hit back again. To hit the ball you need a racket. One can say that table tennis is mini tennis on a table. So... table tennis. I think pingis is fun because it helps you develop yourself, you improve physical condition, and, of course, you make lots of new friends. By Florian
Haga Palace
Princess Victoria of Sweden lives in Haga Palace so you are not allowed to photograph this building. There are guards and cameras to make sure that no one tries to come in or take photographs which is why I took a picture of Haga Park. Haga Palace is also sometimes known as the Queen's Pavilion since Hedvig Elisabeth Charlotta, Karl XIII's queen, lived there for some time.
Haga Palace's was designed by architect Carl Christoffer Gjörwell. The main building has a living area of 1550 square metres. The building work for Haga Palace began in 1802 and it is situated in Solna. It was built in the style of an Italian villa.
Chinese school In Sweden one can also study Chinese, and I do exactly that. I study Chinese at Södra Latin almost every Saturday. We are about twelve pupils in the class. On Saturdays there are many Chinese people there, with some classes that only have adopted children in. I go in one of these classes but there are also some Swedish students who learn Chinese there. I think it is very fun to learn Chinese and I have also made lots of new friends there. I have studied Chinese for about five years. Chinese is one of the languages which is spoken most in the world. Södra Latin is a high school during the week. Katrine
The Royal Palace
The palace was built in 1697 by Nicodemus Tessin, The castle is built av bricks and stone, the style is Baroque.
The castle is nowadays used for tourist tours and for meetings between the King and other royals. The owner of the palace is the Swedish state. The palace is 230 metres long and 125 metres wide.
The castle is well known because of all the old royal families that have lived here. You will find the palace in Stockholm, Sweden.
Bandy What I think is fun about bandy is that you get to go ice-skating and play bandy at the same time. When you play bandy, you need the following equipment: bandy stick, helmet with visor, ice skates. You play on ice/frozen water. Bandy is sometimes called 'winter football'. The sport of bandy was first played in London, England, in 1875. Team members: There are 11 players in a side, plus substitutes. Boys and girls play separately. Category: Ball sport, team sport, winter sport. Our training takes place at Zinkensdamms sports field. Lukas
Axelsberg Centre
Axelsberg is an area within Hägersten, which is a suburb of Stockholm. I live close to Axelsberg Centre. The area measures 60 x 30 metres. Axelsberg was built in 1964. The architecture company which designed Axelsberg is AOL arkitektkontor AB. In Axelsberg Centre there are restaurants, shops, and hairdressers.
MIK Football
I am in a football team in Stockholm. You go there to train to be good. MIK have won quite a lot of medals and trophies. MIK is an abbreviation of Mälarhöjden Sports Club. We train at Mälarhöjden's school field and at Myren. Myren is a place where you can play different sports. In 2016 there will be a new artificila grass pitch at Axelsberg BP. Then we will train there. I think it will be better then because I only live one house away form Axelsberg BP. I play football because it is fun. Mark
Gallerian
Gallerian was opened on the 8th October 1976 and can be found at 37 Hamngatan in Stockholm. Gallerian is approximately 31 500 square metres in size. In 2013 it had 17.9 million visitors.
You can go to Gallerian to buy clothes, to have a coffee, or if you are hungry. At Gallerian you can find almost any kind of shop. There are shops for children, women, and men. In Gallerian there are more than 85 shops, including Lindex, Indiska, Dressman, Foot Locker, H&M, BR Toys, KappAhl, and JC (Jeans Company).
Indoor football Football is a very well-known sport. It is one of the most popular sports in the world. To play football you need a ball and a goal. The idea is to score a goal in the other team's goal. I go to football training once or twice a week and I think it is very fun. My football training is in Slättgård School's sports hall and also at Mälarhöjden School's football pitch. I would recommend football to anyone who likes to run, be with friends, meet new friends, and compete.
Indoor football is a little bit different from outdoors football. For example, you have kick-ins instead of throw-ins. Rebecka
Axelsberg's Station Axelsberg's Station is a station on Stockholm's Metro system. The station is on the red line och lies between Örnsberg and Mälarhöjden. The station also lies between Axelsberg Square and Selmedal Road. The distance between Axelsberg and Slussen is 6.4 km. The station was opened on May 16th 1964. The station has an open-air platform and a ticket office to the left. The platform is quite open but there are plans to build apartments that face Selmedal Road in the next few years.
Originally the area was going to be called Hägerstens Garden but they realised it could be confused with Enskede Garden and when the station was opened, so many people wanted the name 'Axelsberg' that this ended up being the name. In the station there is an artistic decoration which spells out the name Axelsberg. The letters are made of glass, concrete, sand, and iron and were made in 1983.
TV programmes
My free time activity is watching TV. The thing that is fun with watching TV is that you can just relax. My favourite programme is Numbers. Numbers is a police series. At the start of each episode a crime is always committed. Then some police have to solve the crime. Once they have worked out who it was that committed the crime, the poilce need to catch the criminals. Then they need to interrogate them. There are usually a number of criminials involved in the crime. Sami
Apartment buildings along Selmedal Road
In Axelsberg there is a row of tall apartment buildings. The buildings stand along Selmedal Road and they were built between 1965 and 1973. The houses are tall and brown and the architects are Stig Anker, Bengt Gate, and Sten Lindegren. There are eight floors and the ICA supermarket is nearby. There is a garden outside the houses.
Computer games There are many different sorts of computer game. For example, Minecraft, League of Legends, CS:GO and many others. The only thing you need to play are a computer, the game, and a computer charger. You can also use a mouse but it is not necessary (if you have a laptop computer). You don't need to be good, as long as you have fun. You can also get many friends. My favourite game is Minecraft. This is because you can do so much and just let your creativity take over. You can for example build a house, go down in a mine and get resources, and you can play with your friends and more. Viktor
Friends Arena
Friends Arena is a stadium in the Solna area that is known for being Scandinavia's biggest stadium. Friends Arena was built in 2012 and has 55 000 places. The pitch's area is 7 140 square metres. The stadium is silver and black. The stadium is used for football matches och various festivals and singing competitions. The architects of Friends Arena are Berg Architects, Krook & Tjäder and the architect firm is C.F. Möller.
Basketball in Stockholm Basketball is one of the most common sports in Stockholm and you can play basketball both inside and outside in Stockholm.
There are three simple rules in basketball: that you shoot with your hands, that you shoot into a basket, and that you are not allowed to bounce the ball with two hands at the same time. The idea of basketball is to shoot a goal in the basket. And basketball is a team sport where two teams play against each other. I like to play basketball because you get to shoot a lot of goals and you can make a lot of quick counter attacks. I train basketball twice a week and I train in Mälarhöjdens school. Wilmer
