In Tamilnadu we get rain in the months of September, October and November. When there is continuous rain, the rainwater becomes flood.

The flood water damages life and property. It goes to sea at last. We can save the excess water. The saved water can help us in a number of ways.

The Tamilnadu Government has started a programme called ‘Rainwater Harvesting’. Each and every building is required to have rainwater harvesting system. The rainwater reaches the inner part of the earth through this system. The underground water potential is increased. Now almost all buildings including thatched houses have rainwater harvesting system.

If we save water, we will not have scarcity of drinking water in summer. The stored water 

3. Science – A blessing or a Curse?

Today we lead a happy life. It is because of the comforts we have. The comforts have been given by science. Hundreds of years ago man did not have these comforts. Science is a boon always.

Man in the past had to walk long distances. On the way he faced many dangers. There were highway robbers and wild animals. The journey was not much different when we used bullock carts.

Today we move from one place to another very quickly. It is because of science we have super fast buses, trains, cars and aeroplanes.

Electricity is another boon of science. It has brightened our life. It is the backbone of all Industries.

The lamps, fans, AC, TV, refrigerator work on electricity. The computer is a wonder. The TV, the telephone, the cell phone have given us comforts.

Because of medicines and treatments, man leads a long healthy life. Man sends rockets to other planets. He foretells weather. The world has changed because of science.

The atom bomb and the chemical weapons are the only negative aspects. But we can use atom for constructive purposes also. Science is more a blessing than a curse.

4. Environmental pollution When we make our surrounding impure, we call it environmental pollution. We pollute our surrounding in three ways. We pollute air, water and the calm atmosphere.

Today there are many factories. The factories emit smoke. The smoke mixes with air. The air becomes impure. The thousands of vehicles on the road emit fumes. The fumes mix with air. The air is thus polluted. The garbage is dumped near markets, rivers etc. The heaps of garbage also pollute air. We breathe the polluted air and get diseases.

The waste water of factories go to ponds or rivers. Gutter water is allowed to mix with river water.

Water is polluted. The result is cholera. The undrained rainwater around houses gives bad

smell. Mosquitoes come only from the polluted water. The result is malaria.

Man uses loudspeakers unnecessarily. They spoil the calm atmosphere. The horns of the vehicles also disturb the atmosphere. We also pollute the minds of people by playing indecent songs loudly on the roads and in the public transports.

Let us avoid pollution in any form. Let us live a healthy and happy life.

5. Afforestation (or) Tree planting Man wants a society to live. He cannot live alone. Society cannot live by itself. It requires the support of nature. Nature is present in the form of the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the rivers, the trees, etc.

Trees help man in many ways. They give us shade to rest under. They give us flowers and fruits.

They drop twigs. We use them as fuel. Some trees serve as medicine. Trees preserve the eco system.

They add strength to the soil. Together in a large number, trees bring us rain.

But man is unfaithful to the trees. He fells trees for fire wood and timber. When trees are felled in large numbers, we call it Afforestation. Wild animals are also a part of our eco system. When forests are destroyed, wild animals die in large numbers. Today the white tiger is a rare variety.

When trees are cut, there is ecological imbalance . There is global warming. Rainfall is affected. So we must plant more trees. We must preserve trees and forests. If we save trees, they will save us.

6. Television and its uses / Mass Media – Advantages and disadvantages The television, the radio, the cinema and the newspaper are the four mass media. They keep the world under their control. They have advantages and disadvantages.

My ambition: Ambition is the deep desire of a person to be achieved after teenage. Teachers and parents should guide the students to choose their profession. Depending upon the intelligence and interest one can select his career. My ambition is to become a teacher. Dr.Radhakrishnan said that teachers are the builders of a nation. Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam also stressed the same point. If the sutdents are moulded properly they will become good citizens.

Merits of my ambition: India is a country of villages. The literacy rate is poor in some states.
