insight

Greetings . . . Well let me take you through a few points why it’s imperative that we as designers and artists know how to sketch or in fact why we should be doing it more often

Welcome back to Arttrack Newsletter! Most of you were looking for a lot more than we put out last time and I remember a friend asking me, “where is the rest of it?” funny?! I know! But on the real though our intentions with these newsletters is to share some knowledge at the same time getting you guys ready for “the rest of it”.

THE ART OF SKETCHING This time around I take a look at the significance of sketching in design. I believe this would be more of a reminder to those already in the creative field and a lesson to aspiring artistic minds. You might be wondering why I’m speaking about sketching when you need to see a tutorial on some other craft you have been trying to perfect. Well! Sketching is a crucial tool for any designer and I saw it fit to revisit and remind artists and designers alike why drawing should be practiced on a regular basis in an age where technological changes in art are slowly overshadowing the important basics of design. Initial way to spark creativity Holding a pencil triggers a creative feeling in an artist, the doodling tends to spark ideas, the rest is history from there. Sketching also helps in recording what an artist or designer already has in mind at conceptual stages, this gives freedom to illustrate ideas as rough lines and shapes which refined designs will be later developed from. Quick visual communication There are times where you meet a potential client while far from your computer or in a public place and the best way to convey an idea to this second party is through imagery, a quick sketch can be an image to interest the client in your work. A collection of an artist’s rough sketches can help a lot in explaining the creative process for immediate client work and can also tell how competent the artist/ designer is. Anywhere is the ‘right’ place Sketching does not require any special space to take place, forget the studio or anything of that kind for now! The only equipment one need is pencil, paper and a few minutes. An idea at the cafeteria or anywhere can still be put into paper and later develop into a proper design without having to rush back to the studio for the equipment. Go scouting for spots where there are cool observation subjects. In our last newsletter I pointed out the importance of carrying a sketchpad or notebook wherever you go, this will be handy in desperate situations where you are at a random location and potential clients need to see something to interest them in your work. Visual explorations and development Starting a project with a sketch gives a wider range of possibilities for exploration, variation and developments. Due to the fact that multiple sketches can be produced and further brain storming can come from the initial sketch.

Don’t be afraid of mistakes Mistakes are inevitable most of the time, they sometimes provide opportunities an individual can learn from. Work some of those mistakes into the design and the final piece will tell a story unique to ur work.

Sketch anything anywhere you can Take your pencil or sketchbook wherever you go, sketch anything you see interesting and can be used as inspiration for next designs or artwork.
