AFTER HOURS An interactive running path to motivate night runners

PORTFOLIO 2016

P R O B L E M S TAT E M E N T This street furniture project begins with a succinct problem statement. There were three main project perimeters including (1) following the principles from a chosen art movement (Swiss Dada, Situationist International, or Italian Futurism), (2) designing for an outlying/niche user group, and (3) a particular urban context for the selected users. I chose to do my project on the following statement:

“What street furniture, embodying the principles of Futurism can facilitate motivation for night runners during their experience of training on a dark street?”

DESIGN BRIEF From here, I put together a design brief to better understand my users. My brief included personas, mood boards, precedent technologies, and user requirements. From this my design criteria emerged:

1. Bring out competitiveness and motivation 2. Breakaway from boring, f lat surfaces, make running more fun 3. Increase personal f itness ability 4. Facilitate a safe running route 5. Integrate with existing urban environment

DEVELOPMENT Ideas were explored through rough sketches and sketch models were made in an attempt to evoke design intent. From here, three ref ined design directions were chosen. Since this design was to integrate with existing environment, areas of Calgary Alberta were scoped out as potential locations for implementation, and designs were made with the intention of f itting into these areas. Research showed that eight second sprints were optimal in interval training. In order to reach this, the track had to be an average of 50 - 60 meters long

PORTFOLIO 2016

THE FINAL DESIGN Built in Rhino3D with the Grasshopper plug-in a f inal design render was produced to communicate the f inal form. The ‘waves’ along the side walls are parametric to the curvature of the hill that the running track sits upon.

D E S I G N F E AT U R E S The track gives a defused glow when the sun sets for added safety in the night runners route. The path becomes interactive when it detects a users bluetooth signal approaching. It accesses the runners personal data and as they cross the stare line, the track displays red “footprints” from their best time through this stretch of track. This gives this runner an opportunity to race a ghost runner, ultimately, always pushing for a new personal best time.

T H E CO M P E T I T I O N This design is my entry to the Rooy x Ego by HEAD footwear design competition. The brief asked for design submissions of footwear for an active woman who wants to look great in the same pair of shoes in and out of the gym. Part of the design challenge was for the shoe to align with the existing Ego by HEAD brand. The silhouette and colour ways that were chosen are derived from the existing clothing in the line and match the brands clean and simple aesthetic. RESULTS I was not the off icial winner of this contest, however, I was contacted by HEAD who expressed interest in my idea, and have since agreed to take the concept to the prototype phase to decide if it will be produced to go to market. I have completed a tech-pack for Rooy and HEAD and expect to have the prototype completed by the end of March / beginning of April 2016.

T H E L OO K The design uses light pastel colours, paired with a light grey. The shoe has a regular lacing system, which is covered by the asymmetrical wrap to give a cleaner, more modern look during everyday wear. The wrap also provides added stability to the shoe depending on how tightly it is applied. The wrap moves from the

lateral to the medial side of the foot where there is a section to secure it down with snaps. A more ridged material is used on the toe and heel area, giving both support and wear resistance in these sections. There is a pull tab for added ease when slipping into the shoe, and majority of the upper is made from a light, breathable material for all day comfort. V O DO N   |   8

INKBOX PACKAGING Custom artwork and graphic design for the latest product from inkbox: a temporary tattoo company

PORTFOLIO 2016

W H AT I S I N K B O X ? Inkbox is a unique temporary tattoo kit that stains the epidermis of the skin for a real tattoo look and feel that lasts for up to 2 weeks. M Y W O R K AT I N K B O X I started my time with inkbox as an artist for their tattoo stencil designs. Impressed with my work, inkbox has asked me to do many graphic design projects for them including illustrations for their

KickStarter campaign in 2015. My latest inkbox project was the design of their packaging graphics and instruction card to go inside. The tentacles on the front of the packaging were drawn on a Wacom, and the instruction card illustrations were done in vector form to make it as readable as possible. This packaging has been produced and is being shipped out to all inkbox customers starting March 2016.

THE USER This project started with heavy research into the use of a water bottle by an on-duty lifeguard. Many lifeguards were interviewed and the information was then synthesized into a use analysis to better understand all of the problems that needed to be addressed in this design. There were two distinct groups of lifeguards; those who worked poolside, and those who worked on a beach. Each scenario provided different insights, from these, a set of design criteria was devised. T H E P R OC E S S Driven from this criteria, sketches and low f idelity prototypes were made to work through design ideas and a f inal form was developed. THE NAME The name L15 is from Lifeguard (L) and the bottle being light; only about 15oz (15).

THE EXERCISE Exploring sole techniques and textures through the use of parametric software lead to the development of these 3 sole designs. The f irst two were intended to optimize f lexibility, while the last sole was an

exploration of aesthetics and parametric tools. The hexagonal sole was adapted as the tread used in the HEAD footwear project. Any of these patterns could be useful tread designs to any lifestyle footwear project.

BIOBUILD 3D printed modular kit that is meant to foster creativity

V O DO N  |  2 2

T H E P R OJ E C T Biobuild is the outcome from my thesis research done in the f inal year of my Industrial Design degree. It is a building kit for creating unique interior design products. Made up of 3D printed components, its pieces can be connected together to form a modular building experience. I N S P I R AT I O N The foundation of this project is based around rapid prototyping, biological forms, modular systems and the project is geared towards expanding the marker movement community. USING THE KIT The kit is so easy to use that the user can do no wrong. As they explore the difference pieces and connectors in the kit, they effortlessly create beautiful organic shapes. The idea of this product is that they can then use those organic shapes as lighting around their home, and rebuild it into a new shape whenever they want!
