GEORGE TOWN, PENANG, MALAYSIA Case Study Project A collage of the front facades of the Shophouses that can be found through the Penang Heritage area. Dated from 1840, the "Southern Chinese" style evolved with more and more European ornaments (inspired by classical and colonial architecture) added to the facades through to the 1890 with the Early "Straits" Eclectic style and the Late "Straits" Eclectic Style in the 1910's to 1940's. The interiors of the Shophouses were very well designed that allowed the houses to be cooled with natural ventilation to escape the tropical heat.
