Jimmy Joe’s Cattle Co.

Jim J. Henderson knows quality cattle. He’s been involved in the cattle business all his life, and almost four decades at the forefront of the purebred beef industry have provided the knowledge and experience required for selecting, breeding, and marketing top genetics.

The Henderson family has had a significant impact on the purebred industry in Canada, which shaped Jim’s career path and fostered his appreciation for this business. The family has been in the business of importing and exporting purebred livestock genetics for more than a century. Their long history with the Angus breed began with Jim’s great-great grandfather, John Henderson, a Scottish immigrant who farmed in Iowa before moving his family to Lacombe, present-day Alberta, in 1903.

The next generation started the family’s purebred herd, Heatherbrook, in 1909. Jim’s grandfather, Sam Henderson, travelled extensively to bring new genetics to Canada, and the Heatherbrook program became a major source of Angus seedstock for many herds across the country.

Jim carried on this tradition of pursuing quality through his development and management of two of the finest and most respected cattle operations in North America. He was the General Manager of the world-famous Bar Pipe Herefords from 1996 to 2000, leading its purebred operations in North America. During Jim’s tenure at Bar Pipe, the operation exported genetics to eight different countries, won numerous championships, and had many high-selling animals, consistently topping Canadian bull averages for the Hereford breed.

From 2001 to 2009, Jim was Vice President of Remington Land and Cattle Co., a leading North American Angus and Simmental operation. Jim managed the ranch, which spanned 40,000 acres in Alberta and Saskatchewan and featured a 4,000head feedlot, 1,000 backgrounders, 1,000 registered females, and 1,200 commercial females. He also managed 15,000 acres of crop land and 4,000 acres of hay land, as well as an annual production sale of 160 bulls.

Next, Jim became the Manager of Althen Farms Ltd. and Heatherbrook South Angus, based at Del Bonita, AB. This 26,000-acre operation consisted of 1,000 Angus and Simmental commercial cows, 150 Purebred Angus and Simmental cows, and 5,000 acres of dry land cropping.

From 2011 to 2017, Jim was the President of Majestic Cattle Company, based in Stettler, AB, on 10,000 acres of grass and 2,500 of crop land. He ran 300 head of purebred Angus and Simmental females and 1,700 head of commercial cows.

From 2017 to present, Jimmy Joe’s Cattle Company was launched to acquire the top one percent of genetics in the Simmental, Angus, and Charolais business, then promote those genetics to breeders around the world. Jim’s global connections and understanding of what each international market is looking for has allowed him to successfully market his cattle in several countries.

Throughout his career, Jim has built solid relationships in the purebred and commercial cattle industries in North America and beyond, selling live cattle to breeders in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Japan, Mexico, Russia, and the United States. He has sold embryos and semen to Australia, Canada, Ireland, Mongolia, New Zealand, Russia, Scotland, Sweden, and the U.S. Like his grandfather, Jim loves to travel and see good cattle in person, and equally important to him is the opportunity to meet the people behind the cattle and create meaningful connections. Jim’s expertise extends to the show ring, with a long judging career that has seen him adjudicate numerous major shows throughout Canada, including the Calgary Exhibition & Stampede, Farmfair International, and Canadian Western Agribition. A special highlight was being a member of the judging panel for the 2009 World Angus Forum held at Spruce Meadows, AB. Jim’s highest honour came in 2011, when he was awarded The Canadian Livestock Industry’s Leader of the Year, presented to him at Denver’s National Western Stock Show.

Musgrave Blackcap 834 was my selection out of the Musgrave Angus Farm’s Production sale in 2019.

Musgrave Blackcap 834 comes from the highest profile cow family in the United States in the early days of the Angus business.

The Blackcap Missie’s produced the Grand Champion female at Chicago International Angus Show in 1934, 1935, 1936, 1937 and 1947, all bred and shown by Tolan Stock Farm of Illinois. These cattle of the day brought between $10,000 and $40,000.

My Grandfather bought a Blackcap Missie in 1954 for $10,000 from Tolan Stock Farm and she went on to pay for herself many times over.

Musgrave Blackcap 834 is a descendant of this Tolan Blackcap Missie line, and has produced with the same amount of style, structural correctness, and udder quality as her past descendants.

Musgrave Blackcap 834-510 will lower birth weight, up the style, and improve the udder quality every single time.
