ED’S LETTER EOA

ow do you find beauty in brokenness? When we face trials in life, we often start questioning ‘why me?’ and play the blame game. We see ourselves as casualties or victims, lose hope and give up. Seeing Nawaal admit that she is broken and express her need to take a sabbatical made me dig deeper to understand the ideology and the narrative of finding beauty in brokenness. Often, it takes too much time and effort to fix what is broken, and it is rare for leaders to acknowledge that they are less than whole. Nawaal entered the world of entrepreneurship at the tender age of five years, and she has never looked back. Upon her return from the United Kingdom over than a decade ago, she embraced life as a fulltime entrepreneur and hasn’t missed a beat. It takes a brave woman to reveal her brokenness to others and we willingly released her to go and find beauty spiritually, emotionally and mentally – to come back feeling relaxed and beautiful once again.

In many cases, brokenness restores a woman’s beauty, allowing her to shine and share with others again. In this issue, we share the beautiful journeys of women who did not give up. Zoleka Mandela shares how she has battled against breast cancer twice (page 12), while Keneilwe Mogale reveals the painful lessons she learned after undergoing a life-saving liver transplant (page 10). Our ‘Shades of Pink’ fashion pages are dedicated to the fight against breast cancer this October and we share the stories of women who have triumphed in the face of their personal adversity. We encourage you all to hang in there. You are not alone; God is with you through every journey. Listen to the silent whisper of hope and remember that the journey of brokenness ends in wholeness.

LETTERS EOA

Your voices WORDS OF APPRECIATION!

The article ‘Seasonal Perceptions’ by blogger Vusi Mahlangu in the August 2016 issue (the one with Nunu Ntshingila on the cover) was truly inspiring. Considering we were going into the month of September at the time, a transition to spring, shift of mindset and positive attitude make it a season to remember. Essays Of Africa magazine is forever authentic and challenges the different perspectives – I appreciate this the most about the publication. Asaduma Grootboom

I’m so excited to announce that I got my third issue of Essays Of Africa magazine and I am still as glued to it as I was three months ago. This is exactly what we African sisters have been waiting for! Keep up the good work! Telive Kunene Being a first-time reader of Essays Of Africa magazine, I must say the content is so rich and informative,

especially the relationship section! Your July cover is my best cover yet. Matome Morake Essays Of Africa magazine has gone from strength to strength. I have never missed a copy since the launch issue. Thank you for sharing inspirational stories of exceptional women. Ntokozo Mabuza

SOCIAL MEDIA Phiwe M @phiwemm @EssaysOfAfrica My goodness. I am truly lost for words. I bought your August issue today and read it from cover to cover. Amazing work! Phiwe M @phiwemm @EssaysOfAfrica To think I didn’t know about this magazine till this morning. I’m definitely buying your next issue. I have so many questions… Phiwe M @phiwemm @EssaysOfAfrica There’s no need to ask them, but thank you. It was quite informative. Interesting articles. Brilliant writing.

We would love to hear your views, news and especially your feedback on the magazine. E-mail us at letters@ essaysofafrica.com or post your comments on Facebook.com/essayofafrica, @EssaysOfAfrica or EssaysOfAfrica. We reserve the right to edit all letters for publishing purposes.
