THE SEASON OF hristmas has always been my favourite time of the year. I grew up in close-knit family, where both my parents believed and made sure that we always celebrated Christmas with family, friends and the church. We’d spend Christmas Eve in church exchanging gifts and then cook up a storm for Christmas lunch before going to the morning service. After lunch, my dad would take all of us to either the Kruger National Park or Warmbaths, or any other outing he had planned for us for the holidays. Now that it’s my turn to instill the festive fever in my own home, I can’t help but wonder what my daughter’s first Christmas will be like. I would like to infuse our home with the same holiday cheer and love that I received growing up, so that she has a heart filled with childhood memories of Christmas trees and cards, new Christmas clothes for church, and a big family lunch. Over the years I’ve come to realise that Christmas is not only about the gifts, food and clothes, however. It is about the feeling of love that we share with each other; a love that will nurture my little girl’s very being; a love that will see her grow into an amazing independent young woman who will one day plant that same seed in the hearts of her own children. This kind of love comes from the special times spent with family, friends and neighbours during the festive season. It is nurtured by the thoughtful act of selecting a perfect gift for someone special and bubbles up within us, infusing this time of year with a special kind of magic. Whether or not Christmas is a big deal in your home, we hope you will find this to be a season of love within your family. God bless you and your loved ones and travel safe until we meet again in 2017.
