PALESA SETHLAPELO, Fashion & Beauty Intern ‘THRIVE’ will be my word for 2017. Going back to school is my first priority in 2017, as I want to further my studies – or even study something totally new to expand my knowledge. I want to spend more time with the people that matter to me, especially my family. I would like to believe that 2017 will be very red for me in terms of romance, as I will invest much of my time in it.
THE YEAR AHEAD What are your 2017 goals for your career, family and romance?
LELETHU TOBI, Senior Designer I want to absorb as much as possible from those with more industry experience than me and gain as much experience as I possibly can, not only in my field of work, but in other interests I have. I want to be exposed and connected to amazing, inspiring individuals doing things that I would love to explore. This includes me taking advantage of the things that will give me exposure, trying out different things and understanding myself more as a career-driven women, who’s trying to keep the balance between work and play and romance.
WORDS AND IMAGES SUPPLIED BY CONTRIBUTORS.
MPHO PHASWANA NETSIANDA, Intern In 2017 I want to complete my Internship contract with Kwenta Media and become a PR practitioner. I also want to plan and organise a Cape Town vacation for my dearest mom and get my own apartment, as well as a brand new car.
HLULANI MASINGI, Online Editor I just want to advance my current professional skills academically and connect more with my family. With regards to romance, I just want to focus on finance!
NURAAN MOTLEKAR, Business Development & Production Manager We plan, but God has better plans for us. Who would’ve thought I’d be getting married in February 2017, by the will of God! I cannot wait to start the next chapter of my life with my significant other, Naeem. We look forward to many adventures together and hope to one day start a family. Career-wise, I am happy where I am at this time. dec 2016/jan 2017

ED’S LETTER EOA wo years might sound like a short period of time, but it is certainly worth celebrating. Every footstep of this journey counts – one started from the heart with the aim of transferring to another heart. It is a heart-toheart connection, that girl-to-girl moment of connection that reflects caring and embraces the change from a girl to womanhood. I still find it difficult to comprehend we have been on this journey for 750 days, I call it Essays Journey 750. I have also been the acting CEO of Kwenta Media and acting editor of Essays Of Africa for four months now. It has been a super learning curve for me and provided me with a true sense of empowerment. Every day means newness in the Essays Of Africa family and the organic growth of our readership during volatile times of print media has been phenomenal to say the least. Women thrive on emotional connectivity and this is what Essays Of Africa is all about. Kwenta Media prides itself on being a content generator that is affordable and easily accessible to our readers. In Essays Journey 750, we have increased our digital partnerships and footprint to ensure an effective and efficient dissemination of content. We have see growth and consistent navigation with the team, and finally moved to our new home, Kwenta House. Looking back on 10 years of running our own business there have been countless challenges but we have persevered. We have kept the dream alive through hard work, strategic diversification and wise investment.
CELEBRATING TWO YEARS!
As a leader, I have to listen to our readers and all the major stakeholders involved in shaping a winning, informative, wellshaped publication. I have had to analyse the kind of leadership I would provide. How would I lead and manage men and women who are older than me? It helped to listen to the soft voice that pushed me forward and this is my attitude. I now appreciate why I was steered to register a PMD with GIBS two years ago and I apply some of the techniques I have learned to shape the company. I suddenly see the importance of knowledge and how it enables you to be mindful of many things in the act of decision-making. I have realised that leaders tend to be less popular individuals that need to take calculated, informed decisions. I read, I research, I reflect, I share and I think a lot. With all my travel and impromptu meetings with brand managers and agencies, I learned the added value that the fashion and beauty pillars bring to our readers. After a good read of intense, thought-provoking, conversational content, there is a need to lighten up and enjoy the latest lifestyle shopping spreads. This issue’s beautiful cover star, Toke Makinwa from Nigeria, shares her journey with us from being a girl to the woman who is currently taking charge of the media and entertainment industry. The main fashion (page 28) for this issue is exclusively sponsored by D’ORÉ, one of our most loyal partners. As my journey continues, I constantly want to feel your heart, see your footsteps and share a smile with you. Have a safe and blessed festive season; connect with us on social media and let’s keep the conversation going in 2017.
