Choose LOVE

right track. I am learning to embrace my journey and I choose to be happy over being perfect. At times, this can mean choosing to cuddle up to my husband for movie night knowing that I won’t get to see the end because I’ll be tucking our daughter into bed. I have had to convince myself that it’s OK to not have a sparkling clean home because I put the needs of my baby, her father and myself first. It is OK to be tired. It is okay to not feel OK. It is OK to get a last-minute babysitter so that we can go out on a date night. It is OK to relax and put myself first for a change. I am learning to say ‘no’ – even to those who have been there for me and love me dearly. At times, the birthing methods and parenting styles we choose may upset those nearest to us, but we must always be true to ourselves. I choose love. I choose me. I choose to make it my way. Pick love daily, it’s the only guide that stands true. We wish you a month filled with love!

lease don’t tell me that I am one of ‘those moms’ – these are my thoughts as I put pen to paper. Writing this letter is my special time because I get to share a portion of my life with you not just as a fashion editor, but also as a new mom who sometimes moves about the house covered in food stains, while pulling faces to make my baby smile. I have seen parents whose kids cry for candy in shopping aisles, or who sneak outside to splash in the dirty puddles just after bath time – or those with that odd toy that simply has to bath, sleep and ride in the car with them. Before I had my daughter, I used to look at these children and wonder what on earth the parents were thinking. I could never understand how children who were normally so well behaved would play up the very moment their parents had important visitors and friends over. Being a mom slowed me down in the most graceful, humbling and beautiful way. I am in awe of miracles all around me. I used to just grab my wallet, lipstick and car keys and I was good to go. Now, I have to double-check the baby bag, pack clothes for all four seasons in one day, prepare milk and feeds, plan my route, and watch out for that ‘mom is in a hurry, let me sneak in a last minute poopy’. Even in the unplanned moments of life, there is so much love inside of me. I never knew that I could have so much love for my baby, flesh of my own, heart of my heart – and for my husband for making me a mom. However, I am not the supermom my husband would have everyone believe. I feel very needy at times; I need help to get the housework done and to even catch my breath. When I feel guilty because I feel less-than despite the beauty around me, I find solace in the knowledge that there are other women out there who are moms, who run blue-chip companies, who keep ultra-fit and still seduce their partners in the most intimate way at night. Parenting is complex and it is difficult to know if you are on the M a m a s & Pa p a s

A LOOK INSIDE THE WOMB Dr Antonio Rodrigues explains how pregnancy scans work and what you can expect in each stage of pregnancy

FIRST TRIMESTER During your first trimester, you may have an early scan at about six weeks or seven weeks. However, this will only happen if you’re experiencing problems, such as pain or vaginal bleeding.

10

Fertility.indd 10

Your first scan is likely to be a dating scan, when you’re between 10 weeks and 13 weeks plus six days pregnant. This will confirm your due date. The dating scan is especially important if you’re having screening tests for Down syndrome because a correct due date is needed to make the result accurate. Your first scan won’t be able to tell you if you are carrying a boy or a girl just yet, but it will show your baby’s heartbeat and reveal the basic anatomy of your baby’s head, abdominal wall and limbs. Studies have found no link between ultrasound and birth weight, childhood cancers, dyslexia or hearing. A nuchal translucency (NT) scan can be conducted between 11 weeks and 13 weeks plus six days of your pregnancy, or when your baby measures between 45 millimetres (1.8 inches) and 84 millimetres (3.3 inches). In most cases, this will be combined with a blood test for increased accuracy.

anomaly scan shows that your placenta is lying low in your womb, you may need a follow-up scan at 32 weeks. Most of the time, the placenta has moved into a better position by the time you’re 32 weeks pregnant. However, if your sonographer can’t get a clear picture, she may offer to do a transvaginal scan through your vagina to confirm the position of your placenta.

THIRD TRIMESTER In your third trimester, your doctor or midwife may recommend that you have a growth scan between 28 weeks and 40 weeks. This will be if you:  Previously gave birth to a small baby.  Are having twins.  Have other complications, such as diabetes or high blood pressure.  Are pregnant with a baby that measures smaller than expected.  Are measuring larger than expected and your midwife suspects that there’s too much fluid around your baby.

SECOND TRIMESTER In your second trimester you’ll be offered an anomaly scan between 18 weeks and 20 weeks plus six days to check that your baby is developing normally. If the

Ultrasound scans have been used in pregnancy for decades and nobody has found them to be harmful, if carried out correctly.

our first pregnancy scan can be very exciting because it gives you the first glimpse of your baby. Although it’s great to have that first photo for your baby album, the purpose of the scan is to check how many babies you’re carrying, and whether they’re developing normally. An ultrasound scan sends sound waves through your womb (uterus) that are interpreted by a sonographer or your doctor. These waves bounce off your baby as echoes, and the echoes are then turned into an image on a screen that shows your baby’s position and movements. Hard tissues, such as bone, reflect the most sound waves and so make the biggest echoes. These appear white in the image, and soft tissues appear grey. Fluids, such as the amniotic fluid surrounding your baby, appear black, because the sound waves go through them without any echoes.

PRECONCEPTION COUNSELLING We often consider counselling prior to marriage or as a last resort, before things fall apart. Melissa Jane Cook asks an expert why couples planning a baby should consider sitting down with a therapist first. M a m a s & Pa p a s
