Self-Portrait:

Welcome Home, Mursu!

Welcome to the Aalto University School of Business and, above all, welcome to KY! I’m certain that your next few years will be unforgettable in many ways. Our task at KY is to create the best possible conditions for a unique student life, and you new Mursus are a part of it since day one.

Aalto University Business Students, familiarly KY, is the home of business students in Otaniemi, a one-of-a-kind community that is a bond between us all. Founded in 1911, KY has provided its members with services, student advocacy, and memorable experiences for over 113 years now. At some schools, first-year students are called “Fuksis”, but at KY they have been called ”Mursus” for a loooong time. You will see that it’s going to be the theme for the events in the autumn.

On top of the first autumn, the pages of this guide reveal what kinds of things KY does to enrich and improve your student life and that of other students. Because of KY’s and AYY’s diverse selection of activities and associations, everyone can find something for themselves. I encourage you to familiarise yourself with and try out various activities to find your place in the Aalto community. All present degree stu-

dents at Aalto BIZ can join KY for free! More precise instructions are on page 12. Someone could be asking why they should join KY? As a member of KY, you are entitled to participate in all KY events, such as parties, career nights, and sports events, etc. You get to proudly wear KY’s epic ‘dollar green’ student overalls that you get to purchase during the Orientation Week with the help of your tutor. In addition, KY advocates for your interests at the School of Business, provides versatile volunteering opportunities, and offers benefits through our partners.

And finally, my top tips ;) It is said that the years spent studying are the best of your life. And through my very biased glasses that statement holds true. It has been the most unique time for me as I have tried to follow these tips:

”There is no rush. You are already in Aalto and I am quite sure you will do just fine in life even if you are not doing everything at once as fast as possible. Studying at Aalto and being a KY member will bring a lot of new people and experiences into your life you won’t get elsewhere. Seize the opportunity!

Be kind to yourself and others. Take care of yourself. During the Orientation Week, you will hear and do a lot, which may feel overwhelming. Take your time, relax, and leave time for activities outside of school. Be kind to others as well; the community likes to give back to those who treat others with respect.

01 02 03

Stay curious. You will hear about all that KY has to offer you. These opportunities are a great way to find your place in our community and find friends. I promise there is something for everyone, but it might take some time for you to find it. If nothing at KY seems to your liking, take a look at what AYY offers and mix in with teekkaris and arts students. They are great :D

Enjoy your time. There is no rush. You are already at Aalto and I am quite sure you will do just fine in life even if you are not doing everything at once as fast as possible. Studying at Aalto and being a KY member will bring a lot of new people and experiences into your life you won’t get elsewhere. Seize the opportunity!

KY is here for you, so if you have any questions don’t hesitate to contact me at chairperson@ ky.fi. I wish you, new Mursu, unforgettable and memorable moments at KY!

P.S. There is free coffee at our office (like at the guild rooms), so don’t waste your money on Rkioski coffee – come to Espilä instead.

For the years to come, Aalto University Business Students, aka KY, will be a second home and community to you and your fellow Mursus and Marsus. A Peek Into KY’s History

KY has a rich and vibrant history dating back to its founding on October 7, 1911. Starting as a small group with just 70 members, KY has grown through various challenges and achievements, from navigating Prohibition-era social events to constructing their own building amid economic depression. Over the decades, KY has continuously evolved, playing a significant role in Finnish business education and student life, culminating in its integration into the Aalto University community and the recent sale of its historic KY Building.

1910s

1920s 1930s

KY’s First Steps

The Helsinki School of Economics Student Association (Kauppa korkea koulun Oppilas yhdistys) was founded on October 7th, 1911 as a student association for the first Finnish-speaking university-level business school. During its first years, the union had only around 70 members and limited financial resources. KY’s flag, student ribbon and emblem all date back to the start of the student union, and are still used to this day.

Partying Despite the Prohibition

In 1923, the name of the association was changed – the Helsinki School of Economics Student Union (KY) was founded. The prohibition of alcohol created its own set of challenges for KY’s active cultural sector, but thanks to clever students, one did not have to merely sip lemonade at parties. In 1927, the student union received its first own space but the dream of a KY-owned house had started to develop in the students’ minds.

The KY Building on the Horizon

Financing a fully KY-owned building was a long process. Several fundraisers were organised, with a raffle being the tip of the iceberg. At times the depression drove the entire construction project into a difficult situation, but willpower, hard work and a pinch of luck finally led to success and construction planning began in 1939.

The KY Building is Completed

During World War II, the school’s doors were open infrequently. Even though the war had slowed down the construction project, the KY Building was finished in February 1940, and soon after, 42 lucky KY members got to move into the top floors. The war also wasn’t enough to cancel KY’s traditional events like the Annual Ball, Mursujaiset and Wappu

To Top It Off, Smoke a Boston!

Post-war, it was time to focus on rebuilding society and the economy. KY made its first achievement in commercial entrepreneurship by founding the tobacco corporation Amer-Tupakka Oy in 1950, and thanks to cunning marketing, Amer’s Boston cigarettes quickly grew to be a widely popular brand. Also, activity in clubs started to show signs of life and KY’s sports club was in its golden age, often being unbeatable in academic leagues.

1960s The Decade of Finnfocus & Television

The huge export trade show, Finnfocus, held in London in 1968, is the biggest event in KY history. KY rented M/S Finnpartner from Amer, and the ship sailed to London to promote Finland and Finnish companies internationally. The project was a bold and risky investment, which ended up creating a lot of positive publicity. During the ’60s, KY was also active in the TV business: it was a shareholder in Tesvisio, the company behind the first commercial TV channel in Finland. Student numbers increased quickly at the beginning of the 1960s, leading to growing housing challenges. KY’s solution was to start building student housing on Ruusulankatu in Töölö and on Vaasankatu in Kallio.

1970s

Turning the KY Building into Office Space

Student union activities became more political in the ’70s. Political battles and, as a result, frequent changes in the KY Board reflect the times at KY. A hot topic was the fate of the KY Building – should existing student housing be kept or should the building’s financial potential be better utilised? After a long debate, KY finally decided to change the building’s dormitory into office space.

1980s

From Pinstripes to Overalls and Politics to Partying

The student union’s activity wasn’t as political in the 1980s as in the previous decades. In the 1980s KY members partied in the student union’s own restaurants; one of the most popular nightclubs of the time, KYExit , was located in the KY Building. The use of overalls became more common as student life came closer to what it is today. In the whirlwind of the casino economy, KY began to diversify its stock holdings and professionals were hired to lead KY-owned companies through the Ekomen Group. KY was also active outside the student union, and the media diligently followed KY’s affairs. KY continued searching for its limits and offered financing for creating a new radio channel, Radio City

1990s

Emerging from the Depression

The deep depression in Finland at the beginning of the decade severely affected KY. The Ekomen Group declared bankruptcy in 1992 and KY struggled with grave financial difficulties. To balance its finances, KY sold its stock holdings in Amer. The representative council’s meeting leading to the decision was followed by the national news.

UP AT DAWN. Spirits were running high at KY’s 1991 Annual Ball’s Sillis Party. IMAGE: KY ARCHIVES

2000s KY in the New Millennium

Increasing the service level was a major focus point of the first decade in the new millennium. In this spirit, KY created a fund for international exchange to support the students in their traveling expenses. In addition, the apartment offerings kept on expanding when new apartment buildings were finished in Arabianranta in 2006 and on Arkadiankatu in 2009.

2010s

KY as an Association

As Aalto University and the Aalto University Student Union were founded, KY’s status as a student union was retracted. KY as an association started its operations on the first of January 2010, and during the first years, KY searched for its place in the new union and looked for new directions. In the same year, KY Foundation began operating to provide financial support and other resources for students and associations. In 2015, after more than 100 years in Töölö and 75 years in the KY Building, KY expanded to Otaniemi and focused the majority of its activities on the Otaniemi campus. To embrace the Aalto community in full, KY changed its official name to Aalto University Business Students in 2016.

2020s

KY Embraces the Aalto Community and Otaniemi

After multiple floors of the KY Building had been empty for years and the overall condition of the building had been declining, KY’s Representative Council and the KY Foundation made the decision to sell the iconic building in 2020. The move to Otaniemi was even further solidified by this, as well as the efforts towards building the Student Center in cooperation with Aalto University, AYY and Teknologföreningen. Nowadays, these value-based goals are continued through different initiatives.

Mursu Passport

Make sure to use your Mursu Passport to immerse yourself in KY’s culture, traditions, events, and associations throughout the autumn semester!

At the beginning of the Orientation Week, every Mursu will get a Mursu Passport . The Mursu Passport guides you through the world of KY with various tasks, such as attending an info evening, participating in Mursujaiset , and visiting Espilä. By completing these tasks, Mursus will gain the right to wear the KY cockade, which turns your graduation cap into an Economist’s cap (“kauppatieteilijän lakki” in Finnish), alongside other unique prizes.

Throughout the autumn, you’ll explore the culture, traditions, events, and other important contributors to KY. The goal of the passport isn’t just to attend as many parties as possible, but to encourage you to try different activities and discover those that interest you the most. Additionally, you’ll meet fascinating people who will make your study years unforgettable.

Events

The KY Year is filled with various types of events. There’s definitely something for everyone, whether you’re looking to unwind with some yoga or go bar hopping in Kontula. Be sure to join KY Events on Telegram (t.me/ky_events) to stay up to date!

Orientation Week and Mursujaiset

The Orientation Week is not only about adapting to the academic world, it’s also about getting to know KY and Aalto, our associations and what they have to offer. This includes events ranging from getting to know the Aalto community through Otasuunnistus, Aalto Party and Aalto Amazing Race, to getting to know your fellow mursus at Jäänmurtajaiset , Mursujaiset , and Mursubileet – or Meet Your Masters, if you are an incoming Master’s mursu. The whole Orientation Week is filled with amazing events for you to meet new people and gain a grasp of what being a student at Aalto University School of Business is all about.

KY, as well as the Orientation Week, is not only about the boozy nights. To ensure this, KY’s Sports and Wellbeing Committee LiHy organises a playful sports event, the Mursu Championships, where tutor groups compete against each other. This is also one of the many places where you can get to know KY’s sports associations. During the Orientation Week, you will get a chance to learn more about KY’s different associations, such as its clubs, subcommittees,

committees, and subject clubs, and everything else KY has to offer. Get to know the associations beforehand by reading this Guide!

One highlight of the fall, and your KY years, is Mursujaiset . The 24-hour experience is an academic baptism for all new BIZ students, but we won’t reveal too much beforehand! Save the date, 5.9. (and maybe the day after), because this is something you do not want to miss.

Autumn Festival

The highlight of October, and the week you get to take your brand new overalls out for a stroll for the first time, is the Autumn Festival. The Festival begins with the traditional pub crawl III-kierros which is followed by the glamorous, simultaneously-held Boston Night and Masters’ Night . The week culminates in the legendary Sillis, which truly is something you don’t want to miss.

Annual Ball Week

The most amazing week of the year takes place in the early spring when it’s time to celebrate KY’s birthday! Next year, KY celebrates its

FEEL GOOD WEEK. For the Spring 2023 Feel Good Week, LiHy organised a Yoga &

amazing 114-year journey with elegant festivities during Annual Ball Week . The week kicks off with a party behaviour class, goes onto the Annual Ball Sitz Party and Annual Ball Brunch, and ends on the highest of notes: the glorious Annual Ball. Of course, the party doesn’t end there and the ever-so-adventurous Sillis makes sure we get to celebrate our beloved KY all day and all night.

Wappu

Wappu is a student’s Christmas, New Year’s Eve and birthday, all wrapped into one. KY Wappu is filled with various events throughout the weeks before the actual highlight. Wappu Eve is full of spectacular events and KY arrives with style in a Wappu Parade to watch Havis Amanda get its graduation cap, after spending the day at Wappu Terrace and Pre-Manta. The celebration culminates in KY’s Wappukuntis After a night of partying, why should you stop there? The morning after, students head to Ullis

to enjoy the celebration with friends, and sparkling refreshments flow all day long.

Feel Good Weeks

Even though feeling good should be a constant state of mind, we here at KY want to put extra emphasis on it during Feel Good Weeks, which are organised twice a year. Mindfulness, cooking classes, or exercise advice are just some of the opportunities during the weeks, and the programme varies. These opportunities are planned to balance your life between studies, relieve stress, and inspire you to try out these activities during regular weeks too.

Company Excursions

KY organises numerous excursions during the academic year. Make sure to join them as they are a great way to meet the company representatives in person and to ask them about the possibilities they have to offer. Excursions are

Brunch event. IMAGE: SELMA KIURU

a great way to make a good first impression on your future employer!

Kuntis Parties

Kuntis parties are highlights of the KY year. KY’s Kuntis parties bring together your fellow students and they are organised at Helsinki’s best night clubs. At a Kuntis, you can enjoy student-priced drinks, meet new people, and listen to live music from some of the most exciting artists in Finland.

Lauluiltas and Sitz Parties

A lauluilta is a dinner party with long traditions. During these nights, traditional songs from KY’s own songbook, Kiljukaula, are sung and usually a three-course dinner with wines and schnaps is enjoyed. A lauluilta is one of the best ways to get to know more about the traditions and roots of KY, so be sure to check out Harkkalauluilta in the beginning of 2025!

At KY, sitz culture is thriving as well. Like Lauluiltas, sitz parties are academic dinner parties as well, but with their own traditions and manners. For instance, people usually wear overalls at sitz parties, but dress a bit fancier to a lauluilta. Be sure to attend Harkkasitsit this fall to get to know more about KY’s sitz culture.

Pub Crawls

Pub crawls are all about having fun in good company. They’re typical student events where people from different universities gather in one city to tour different pubs and bars with friends. KY organises two pub crawls annually – one in October during the Autumn Festival and one in April. III-kierros takes place along the routes of tram number 3 and the legendary Hukkaputki introduces students to the metro tunnels of East Helsinki. Search for Hukkaputki or IIIkier ros on KY’s YouTube to get a grasp of what’s to come. In addition, there are organised rides to various pub crawls around Finland.

Code of Conduct

KY is an amazing community full of people with a great variety of different backgrounds. Our biggest asset is these people, as KY’s operations are based on our members working seamlessly together. To succeed in the work we do, whether it is in the voluntary network or at an event on our premises, our members must understand the type of behaviour that is expected from them and the set of rules that must be obeyed in everyday KY life.

KY’s Code of Conduct helps us to display the set of standards that the KY community has agreed to adhere to live up to our values. Its purpose is to summarise the principles and policies we want to follow and to set out guidelines for the kind of behaviour that we expect from each other.

This Code of Conduct applies to all KY members, KY employees, attendees at KY events, partners of KY, and all people who hold a position of trust at KY or in an association operating under KY. These principles should be followed in all kinds of interactions between members of the community, whether they are carried out live or remotely, since above all we want you all to feel safe no matter what. Read more at ky.fi/code-of-conduct:

• Make yourself visible when approaching someone new. You don’t need to take anyone by surprise.

• Ask for consent. May I join you? May I get you a drink? May I hug you?

• Avoid following someone or staring at them for a long time as it may make them uncomfortable.

• Give people their personal space.

• Avoid filming people without their explicit permission.

• Don’t flirt with someone who needs care. Helping someone who is having a difficult time is not an open door to flirt with them. If someone is having a hard time communicating or can’t take care of themselves, they can’t consent to sexual interactions.

Here are some tips on how to conduct yourself at our events to ensure a good and safe experience for everyone:

If you spot a situation that seems to go against our Code of Conduct or where intervention

BE RESPECTFUL.

could be needed, here are some ways you as a bystander can help:

• Delegate the situation to a bouncer or the event organiser or have them assist you in breaking up the situation.

• Directly confront the situation if you feel safe to do so. Ask if everything is okay or if help is needed and help the person getting harrassed exit the situation.

• Create a distraction by, for example, pretending you’re a friend of the person getting harrassed and create an opportunity for them to leave the scene.

• Document the situation, since writing down and remembering what has happened can be useful later on.

• If none of these help, wait the situation out and check on the person when the situation itself has passed.

Probba

Probba, the Student Association of Aalto University School of Business, Mikkeli campus, is a tight-knit community for “Babas”, students of the International Business Programme. With its unique curriculum structure and strong international focus, Probba fosters a vibrant environment where students from diverse backgrounds can thrive. As an integral part of KY, Probba bridges the gap between the Mikkeli and Otaniemi campuses, fostering a seamless transition for Babas graduates to begin their master’s studies in Otaniemi!

What is Probba?

Probba is the Student Association of Aalto University School of Business, Mikkeli campus, the home for students who attend the International Business Programme (BScBA). Our students are called “Babas”, and the reason behind this nickname dates back to 1989, when the programme was still titled “BBA”. We are a tightknit community, hence we proudly named our people “Probba” – the Latin term “for BBA” – “Pro-BBA”. Leading this community is the Probba Board, which takes care of every facet of our student life.

Probba and KY

Probba is an independent part of KY; our relationship grows stronger when Babas graduate from Mikkeli, bring their Mikkeli spirit to Otaniemi for a Master’s degree, and join the KY community there. Probba is invited to many KY’s events, such as the notorious Mursulaiva and Wappu. The same applies to KY when they

travel all the way from Espoo to Mikkeli to join Probba’s Mikkeli Road Trip

The KY Board has a portfolio for Probbarelated affairs, while on the Probba Board, the most prominent members in building cooperation with KY are the Project Coordinator and the President.

Our Programme

What is special about our programme is that we follow a curriculum model of three-week modules – taking one course at a time and finishing it within three weeks. This minimises the possibility of procrastination and requires intensive concentration on our studies.

The duration of our programme is approximately 2.5 years: we spend two years of our studies in Mikkeli, and one semester abroad. During the study-abroad period, students have various choices for exchange destinations to select from, ranging from the Far East to South America, providing a long list of top partner universities.

After graduation, our students are automatically offered study rights for the Master’s Programmes in Ota niemi.

Prestigious professors from all around the world come to teach at Mikkeli, reflecting our programme name: International Business. English is the most commonly spoken language on our campus – both in academic life and daily conversations – to enhance an international environment and inclusivity among all students, no matter where they come from.

Our Community

Having a small community turns out to be a wonderful factor that strengthens the bond among students. We are a big family where we know everybody, study, and have fun together. With only around 150 students around the campus, and more than one-third of them already non-Finnish students, we embrace a highly international spirit. Internationality and diversity are the signatures of our community, and the Probba Board itself consists of students from multiple backgrounds and is re-elected every year to welcome more diversity to our community administration.

The Mikkeli campus has become a cozy home not only for Babas but also for exchange students who hold Mikkeli dear even after only a short stay. The peaceful town of Mikkeli is in a fever of joined culture and friendship across nations, and as our programme is broadening our reach, we get more diversity than ever before.

Student Life

Despite the intense study load, extracurricular activities in Mikkeli never cease to be lively. Apart from attending annual events hosted

by the Probba Board such as the Ribbon Skate, Mikkeli Boat Trip, Orientation Week, and Grand Annual Ball, students enjoy singing out traditional songs at Nesu-Probba’s sitz parties, gathering up for board games in the board game club, recharging their energy by FC Probba’s futsal, exploring the beauty of Finnish winter during SkiBBA’s skiing trip Ganos, or shouting “Oi Mikkeli!” enthusiastically (and proudly) every mid-week at Pentti Bar – just to name a few student clubs. Nature in Mikkeli never fails any Babas; winter provides a wonderful opportunity for skiing, ice-skating, or the very “Finnish” ice swimming, while the lovely summer makes walks in the woods, sports at Pankalampi beach, and long-distance cycling very tempting.

Babas Alumni

As Babas graduate and continue their life everywhere in the world, many still come back to Mikkeli to reminisce about the good old days they once shared with their friends. Mikkeli Mafia became an honorary title granted to the graduates who have a strong connection with Mikkeli’s alumni community.

“You can literally meet Mikkeli alumni anywhere on this vast Earth”, a professor teaching this programme for years once said. “I met this guy when I was in a remote area in this farfetched country, whom I found very familiar. I asked him, ‘Are you a Mikkeli graduate?’, and do you know what he said? ‘Oi Mikkeli!’ – in the middle of nowhere!”

A new wind is blowing on our campus with the arrival of the next generation – Baba 24’s. Always remember, our dear fuksis, that we are ready to welcome you all with a warm heart and wide-open arms. An adventure is lying ahead of you!

AYY’s Greetings

A warm welcome to Aalto University and especially to your Student Union AYY. Student life is a matter close to our hearts, and we at AYY are working hard to ensure that you can experience the best student life in the world! Our goal is to ensure that every student enjoys a safe and supportive environment during their studies. A new open world full of great opportunities

is now in front of you. We encourage you to be curious – to learn, to discover, to explore and above all to enjoy your time at Aalto. Challenges are part of life and finding your own path can be challenging at times. So don’t hesitate to contact us as we are here to support you with any problems you may have.

See you on campus!

Advocacy and Interest

Representation

AYY represents students’ interests and rights on both a university level and a national level, making sure students are being heard in society! You can take advantage of AYY’s advocacy services, for example, if your exam results are

late, or you may get in touch with an equity officer if you encounter any type of harassment. As a member of AYY, you can apply for administration as a student representative and influence the decisions made at the university. AYY’s highest decision-making body is the Representative Council (RepCo), which is elected by vote. In the elections, all AYY members can vote and run as candidates. The next Representative Council elections will be held next year. Members of the Representative Council decide on the goals and policies of the Student Union.

Student Culture

Volunteering, association activities and diverse events are an essential part of Aalto student culture and the Aalto community. The highlights of the year include Wappu and Orientation Week events, the Annual Ball, Shrovetide celebrations and many other events.

In addition to the Student Union, events are organised by volunteers who work in sections and committees. AYY has six sections: the Community Section Aava, the Campus Section, the Teekkari (Technical Student) Section, the Museum Section, the New Students Section and the Advocacy Management Group (more commonly known as EduJory ). The call for volunteers will open in late autumn. Information on the call will be published in AYY’s communication channels. In addition, AYY has more than 200 associations that organise activities in the fields of sports, music, games, and other hobbies. New students are always welcome to join association activities, and AYY offers help, support, and advice for the establishment of associations and their activities. Keep an open mind for different opportunities and get to know the associations in upcoming events!

The Museum of Student Life has expanded its exhibition and activities to cover the student cultures of the entire Aalto community - technology, business, and arts. In addition to technology students’ culture, the museum now also presents the history and present of KY – Aalto

Phuxivatorns Hälsning

Congratulations and welcome to Aalto University! You’ve made an excellent choice and now you have an amazing phux and mursu year ahead of you. My name is Sara Blomqvist and I’m the Phuxivator at Teknologföreningen (TF), the Swedish-speaking student nation at Aalto. Here’s my greeting for those interested in our Swedish-speaking community:

 Sara Blomqvist Phuxivator :

Kram, Sara Phuxivator

New friends, skills, and experiences. Wappu festivities in overalls; the Annual Ball in an evening gown or a tailcoat. Without the various activities arranged by KY’s volunteers, there would be no KY – and without newcomers like you, KY would have no future. Next, you’ll be introduced to our associations and the possibilities in volunteering that we have to offer, so turn the page and join the fun!

Subcommittees

KY has three subcommittees, each doing its part in granting everyone here the most unforgettable university years through organising numerous unique events. In addition to making student life more fun for KY members, all of the three subcommittees have their own traditions and a tight community to support each other. Many former members look back at their subcommittee years with great fondness and remain friends for the rest of their lives.

KUJ, SUB OR NESU? Joining a Subcommittee is a great way to make new friends and lasting memories. IMAGE: HENRIK ASKLÖF

KUJ

KUJ, more formally Kulttuurijaosto, is the Cultural Subcommittee of KY. For decades, KUJ has ensured that the students of KY get their fair share of parties and events – and will continue to do so for many years to come. The most notable events KUJ arranges include parties like Sillis, Club Lagoon, and much more. In September, KUJ will welcome you to the student community at Mursujaiset , a 24-hour ordeal for new students, for which you should already brace yourself. Along with organising traditional KY events, KUJ is responsible for the dollar-green overalls. You can spot members of KUJ by their fur-collared overalls.

KUJ forms a tight-knit community where former board members often remain active even years after graduation. As a member of

KUJ, you become part of something much larger than just student life – you’ll find yourself at the heart of student culture. The door is open once and only once, so Mursu, choose wisely. You can find more information at kuj.fi, or by following KUJ on Facebook @KUJry and Instagram @kuj.ry.

With events ranging from epic theme parties like Around the World Sitz and Road to Wappu to more laid-back hangouts like ice skating, KY-Sub is always up to something. Plus, don’t forget our memorable Lapland and cottage trips for exchange students, or the always wild Mursulaiva for all new students!

Whether you dream of an international career and want to improve your cross-cultural skills, or simply wish to meet and make friends from all over the world, KY-Sub is the place to be! By joining Sub, you’ll become part of an ever-growing, loving family that provides loads of

support, long-lasting close relationships, and incredible memories from both public and internal events.

Our event portfolio also includes career events held in cooperation with future employers, as well as many exclusive events for our members. You might have also heard of our legendary Wappu Terrace !

Each fall we warmly welcome tens of Mursus to join us. You can recognise our members from the NESU letters and names that embellish our overalls. Once you join NESU-KY, you become part of a tight community that grants you unforgettable experiences for the rest of

your studies. Our active alumni are also a frequent sight at our events.

Committees

KY has six committees that are all led by members of the KY Office. The responsibilities of these committees range from student culture to academic affairs as well as corporate relations. Committees also play a big part in ensuring that all new students have a smooth landing into KY life!

KUVA Culture

KY’s calendar is packed with events to help students connect, strengthen our community, and create memorable experiences. Many of these amazing events ranging from pub crawls to lauluiltas and the Wappu Parade are organised by none other than KY’s Cultural Committee, KUVA . KUVA’s mission is to uphold and advance KY’s student culture, and to always do so in great company and spirit.

At the heart of the KY spirit, KUVA gives its members a real chance to dive deep into student culture. With teamwork and a great group of friends, KUVA organises all of these events, ensuring all KY members can enjoy a vibrant student life.

CORE Corporate Relations

KY’s Corporate Relations Committee, CORE, makes sure that KY members know about career opportunities and help reach the best of them. As our name CORE suggests, we man-

age KY’s corporate relations. We serve as a bridge between our partner companies and KY members, enabling both parties to reach each other effectively. We strive to provide a broad and diverse portfolio of partner companies, so that every kylteri can find something for themselves. The most visible parts of CORE’s work are our career-focused events and excursions, most of which are also open for you Mursus!

Being a part of CORE is incredibly beneficial for its members. Committee members manage KY’s partnerships, which develops business communications and organisational skills, and gives professional contacts from desired companies. In addition, CORE’s members get to polish their negotiation skills by looking for new partners and benefits, while enjoying an unforgettable year together. Come to our events and take a leap in your career!

LIHY Sports and Wellbeing

Need some balance in your life alongside all the partying and studying? The Sports and Wellbeing Committee LiHy can help with that! To

build a stronger KY community, LiHy organises a wide range of events to support students’ wellbeing and make the most of student life. Our events vary from chilling with dogs and at cake buffets to a multidisciplinary adventurepacked sports day and a hiking trip to beautiful Lapland.

The members of the most energetic committee of KY can always be recognised from their sporty and striped Adidas jackets. LiHy’s goal is to provide students with unforgettable memories – and of course, to have fun and feel good at the same time!

KOVA

Academic Affairs

KY’s Academic Affairs Committee, KOVA , aims to make advocacy more visible to KY members and works as an easy channel of communication between stakeholders. KOVA has a number of elected members, with the addition of mandate members: the academic affairs representatives from each subject club. Most of our work happens behind the scenes, but KOVA works constantly on new projects and initiatives, and attempts to find ways to improve the daily life of Aalto BIZ students

At KOVA’s Tea and BIZcuits afternoon in the Business School lobby, KOVA gathers feedback from students while serving coffee, tea and biscuits. KOVA additionally organises the Teacher of the Year award vote. Additionally, KOVA is responsible for KY Corner (Kyrner), located on the ground floor of the Undergraduate Center. You’re always welcome to stop by in between classes and have complimentary coffee!

MC

Masters’ Students

Who said living your student life to the fullest ends once you start working on your master’s

degree? The Masters’ Committee, MC, is here to help our beloved master’s students in making the most of the last two (or more) study years!

MC organises events where every master’s student or like-minded can come relax and meet people across all different majors. Whether it’s a career event, a summer boat party, or maybe a sparkling song night, there’s always something interesting to do, and new people to meet. Our committee members are both experienced KY actives who are up for one more year and fresh faces who are still interested in volunteering during the later stages of their studies. We hope to see many of you in our upcoming autumn events, so stay alert. Let’s have an unforgettable time together!

TC Tutoring

For most students, it’s very likely that their first experience with KY and the School of Business has been through their very own tutor. The Tutor Committee, TC, recruits and trains all the new tutors that will guide the new students to the world of Aalto, academia, KY and memorable student life. TC also organises all tutor-related events, such as Tutor Cottage and Tutorlauluilta. The goal of TC is to ensure that all tutors can create a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for the new students, help them with the start of their studies, have fun while tutoring and help build the KY and Aalto community.

TC consists of the Tutor Coordinator (who is employed by the Learning Services of Aalto University School of Business), Vice-Chair, nine committee members, and the new students and Master’s students representatives of the KY Board. Committee members are either responsible for Bachelor’s, Exchange, or Master’s tutors. TC is here to make sure that the new students and tutors have an amazing kickstart to student life!

Tempaus

Tempaus is a traditional way for students to make a difference in the world, with a twinkle in the eye, in a serious way. It’s about harnessing the power of the students and getting the general public interested in a common problem. Tempaus can take almost any form.

The last Tempaus took place in 2016, with the aim of raising the importance of basic education to a national debate by visiting nearly 1,500 Finnish primary schools over a week. This year, the theme of Tempaus 2024 will be the value of volunteer work. The goal is to raise societal discussion about the value and the importance of volunteer work, and to encourage people themselves to do volunteer

work. You can read the complete Tempaus order at tempaus.fi

Tempaus is geared towards the whole Aalto community, from fuksis to older students, regardless of one’s field of study. Everyone is encouraged to join, whether you study tech, arts or business. More information and details on Tempaus will be announced in the fall. Follow our information channels to stay updated!

Annual Ball Committee

KY’s Annual Ball, known for its glamour and elegance, is the crown jewel of KY’s Annual Ball Week. Each year, the chosen Annual Ball Committee adds a unique personal touch in creating the event, ensuring that the event remains both traditional and refreshingly distinct.

KY’s Annual Ball is the single most glamorous event of the year and the highlight of the Annual Ball week, held between the end of February and the beginning of March. The event cherishes KY’s centennial history and celebrates our strong community and its members.

The Annual Ball is organised by the Annual Ball Committee chosen during the autumn, usually around October. The committee is open to everyone regardless of their academic year or KY background. Usually, the committee consists of 7–9 members who all have different responsibilities, including the Chair. Responsibilities include, for example, catering, programme, invitations, corporate relations, and communications.

While the Annual Ball is without a doubt the most traditional event, each committee adds a personal touch to make it look like their own! The event is the crown jewel of KY where we dress up and enjoy the people around us.

Representative Council

The Representative Council (RepCo, edustajisto or “edari” in Finnish) is the highest decision-making body of KY. Its purpose is to make sure that KY is acting in the best interest of its members.

The Representative Council consists of KY members who are eager to have an influence on the actions of KY and the future of our dear community. Whereas the KY office takes care of the daily operations and development at KY, the Representative Council sets the broader frame to guide said operations. The Council determines what KY is, what it stands for, and what KY actually does today and in the years to come. RepCo operates at the very heart of KY, which makes it a great viewpoint to all that’s happening in our community!

The Representative Council operates through meetings, which are held approximately once a month at the School of Business. The RepCo also organises meeting after-works

and other leisure events to balance the work of the Council members and to get them acquainted with each other. The actual decisions of The Representative Council are made in the meetings, but ultimately they are only the culmination of council work – a lot of hours go into preparation, discussion, and planning as well.

The Representative Council is elected every two years: the next Representative Council elections will be held in the fall of 2025 concurrently with the elections of the Representative Council of our student union, AYY. The current Representative Council was elected in 2023 and it consists of 21 members and 41 deputy members from both Otaniemi and Mikkeli. The current Council operates fully in English.

How Can I Join?

Come and attend a Representative Council meeting – all KY members are welcome!

Keep an eye out for upcoming meetings and previous decisions on KY’s social media.

Chat with a current Council member to make sure your voice is heard. They’re there to represent all KY members – and that includes you!

Kylteri Magazine

Student and business life, as well as the world outside them, have endless interesting stories to be told. Aalto University Business Students’ magazine, Kylteri, is a community for people willing to bring those stories to the public either through words, photos, or illustrations. As a magazine, Kylteri provides thought-provoking, quality journalism.

Kylteri has been keeping up the traditions of brave student journalism since 1999. From the very beginning, KY’s own student magazine has provided its readers with quality journalism, covering topics from student life and alumni stories to social phenomena and culture. Kylteri publishes two print magazines a year, one in the spring and one in the autumn. In addition, fresh articles can be found on Kylteri’s website, kylteri.fi, throughout the year.

The team leads of Kylteri’s editorial staff are the Editor-in-Chief, as well as KY’s Art Director and Editorial Assistants, whose responsibilities range from overseeing the magazine's visual image or written content to managing social media. Still, the heart of the magazine is the diverse group of writers, illustrators, and photographers, who will be recruited before the making of each print magazine.

Would You Like to Join?

Do you know your way with words or know how to take a shot with a story? Do you enjoy illustrating or have an interest in testing your drawing skills in the context of print media? Or do you just happen to be curious about the field? To join Kylteri, you don’t need to have previous experience in journalism, photographing, or illustrating – this is a great, low-threshold opportunity to test whether creative (and witty) communication would be your thing. At Kylteri we cover a wide range of topics, so whatever it is that you would like to write about, our doors are always open. If you find this at all interesting, don’t hesitate to contact us! Let’s find some inspiring responsibilities for you.

Also good to know: Kylteri publishes content both in Finnish and English. Kylteri’s contributors get compensated for their work.

The Aalto Community

The Aalto Community offers all Aalto students great opportunities to build interdisciplinary bonds through fun events and other activities. Keep your eyes open and remember to explore events outside of the KY bubble to make the most of this special community!

Studying at a university is quite different from your past studies: there is no strict curriculum unless you decide to create one for yourself. Now you have the freedom to choose which courses to attend and how to build your individual timetable! This freedom comes with great responsibility – you must ensure that you complete all the courses required for your degree.

The time it takes to finish your degree doesn’t depend only on your studying methods and planning but also on your individual life situation. While the typical target time for completing both your Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees is five years, changes in your life circumstances can affect this timeline. Working, going on an international exchange, or starting a family, for example, may slow down your studies. Conversely, clear scheduling and a goal-oriented attitude could help you graduate more quickly.

Studying at the School of Business

You study at Aalto BIZ (Aalto University School of Business), which is a part of Aalto University. Aalto University was formed in 2010 when three independent universities – the Helsinki School of Economics, the Helsinki University of Technology, and the University of Art and De-

sign Helsinki – merged into one. Today, the university consists of six relatively autonomous schools.

You’re free to attend courses or even complete your minor studies in any of the schools within the university. To make it easier, there are several multidisciplinary programmes available. Additionally, Aalto University is continuously striving to improve collaboration between its schools. It is also possible to include an internship in both the Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, providing a great opportunity to gain practical work experience.

Studying methods used and required during your studies vary between courses and teachers. The most important thing to keep in mind is that the teachers won’t give you ready-made answers but rather a broad toolkit to use to solve the problems presented to you. University studies aim to teach you problem-solving skills and give you new points of view on perhaps already familiar topics.

In addition to lectures, most courses include assignments, small group teaching, or exercise sessions. Teamwork and case presentations are both common ways to learn and work, helping you get accustomed to the working methods you’ll likely encounter in your future career. Most courses conclude with an exam, but often, the exam isn’t the sole basis for your final grade – cases and assignments may have a significant impact on your final grade as well.

Bachelor’s Degree

Your university-level business studies will begin with the Bachelor’s degree. At Aalto BIZ, this lower university degree consists of common core and methodological studies, specialisation and minor studies, language studies as well as elective studies. The Bachelor’s degree consists of 180 ECTS, which is equivalent to three years of studying, by recommendation. At the end of your first year of studies, you will be asked to pick a specialisation area chosen from seven options: Accounting, Information & Service Management (ISM), Economics, Finance, Management, Marketing, and Business Law. This area of specialisation will make up approximately one-third of your Bachelor’s degree studies and define the area on which you will write your Bachelor’s thesis – your first step into the world of research and academic writing.

Master’s Degree

The Bachelor’s degree might be a stepping stone into corporate life. However, you should bear in mind that most employers, especially in Finland, prefer or even require their employees to have a Master’s degree to be able to acquire higher positions within the company. For this reason, it is not surprising that most business students opt to continue their studies until having finished both their Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. Many choose to deepen their knowledge in their Bachelor’s specialisation area, but it is not uncommon to switch to an entirely

different major, either. In addition to Aalto BIZ’s Master’s programmes, there are also interdisciplinary Aalto programmes to choose from.

The two-year Master’s degree is worth 120 ECTS and includes advanced specialisation studies, minor and elective studies as well as the pro gradu thesis. The pro gradu thesis follows the same principles of academic writing as the Bachelor’s thesis but it is significantly more extensive. Some students choose to get more familiar with working life while wrapping up their studies – it is possible to conduct your pro gradu research as a commission project for an interesting company. That’s basically getting paid to complete your studies!

Questions? Answers!

At the beginning of your studies, your tutor will explain everything you need to know about your future studies and student life. Remember that you can also always ask your professor if you have any questions in mind. The professors can be contacted via email or face-to-face during their weekly reception hours – just remember to check the times beforehand! More often than not, the professors are quick to answer your questions.

The Everyday Life of a Student

It’s easier to enjoy student life when your day-to-day necessities are in order. This section aims to answer practical questions about housing, income, and healthcare. Fortunately, there is no need to worry. We students are pretty well taken care of – our student union AYY, the social security institution KELA, and the Finnish Student Health Service YTHS, amongst others, are here to help us.

HOUSING

AYY owns apartments that are rented out to students of Aalto University. However, AYY does not have adequate housing for all Aalto University students so you should also search for an apartment through other channels.

First-year students and students moving from outside the metropolitan area have priority in the housing queue. You can apply for housing as soon as you receive the confirmation of your place of study. A so-called freshman point is available for AYY’s shared apartment queues. To receive the freshman point, you must apply for housing no later than in July or December, depending on when your studies begin.

Applying for AYY’s Housing

01

Familiarise yourself with AYY’s housing on ayy.fi/en/housing.

03

Read about the application process on ayy.fi/en/how-to-apply-for-housing.

Apply for AYY’s housing through the Domo system: domo.ayy.fi

For questions concerning housing, please contact AYY’s Housing Office:

Email: housing@ayy.fi

Phone: +358 50 520 9410

Other Housing Options in the Metropolitan Area

dent housing provider in the metropolitan area: hoas.fi

Financial Aid for Students

Student financial aid is a social benefit that consists of three parts:

1. Study grant

2. Housing supplement (students in rental housing)

3. Student loan

To receive student financial aid, you must gain at least 5 ECTS per supported month. However, the minimum is 20 ECTS per academic year, regardless of the number of months for which you receive student financial aid. In addition, since student financial aid is a social benefit, the amount of your income affects how many months of student financial aid you are entitled to during the year.

Students who begin their academic studies for the first time in 2024 have 30 months of financial aid for completing the lower university degree. When students have completed their Bachelor’s degree and continue to the Master’s degree, they are entitled to 21 additional months of financial aid. However, a student can use no more than 48 financial aid months in total to complete both degrees. Further information at kela.fi/opintotuki.

In recent years, there have been many changes to student financial aid and upcoming changes will occur, so remember to follow Kela’s website and ask if anything is unclear to you!

Monitor Your Income

If you work or get a summer job among studies and earn more than the income limits of student financial aid allow, you need to return

the extra financial aid on your own initiative or cancel the aid in advance for the number of months necessary. Read more at kela.fi/ opintotuki-omat-tulot .

You should avoid using financial aid months unnecessarily, as you will not get back the months already used, even if you still have studies left. Thus, do not use your financial aid for sick leave or a holiday! If your sick leave is prolonged, you can apply for a sickness allowance. Find more information at kela.fi/opintotukijos-sairastut .

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

Finnish Student Health Service (YTHS)

The Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS or YTHS in Finnish) takes care of university students’ health. You can always make an appointment with FSHS when you are in need of health services.

Since the beginning of 2021, the students entitled to FSHS services such as yourself have paid the healthcare fee, which is 36,80€ per semester, to Kela. The fee needs to be paid unprompted (you won’t be sent an invoice regarding it) twice a year and you can pay the fee at oma.kela.fi. If YTHS (FSHS) is closed or you cannot make an appointment, you can always use your own municipal health center or the emergency services.

During your first year of studies, you will receive a request to participate in the electronic health survey of FSHS (SÄTKY) which is designed to review the health of first-year students. It is very important that you respond to it. The survey will be sent to you via the online service Self and registration is needed. After responding to the survey, you will receive an invitation to visit a public health nurse and/or dental care if necessary.

FSHS has two health centers in the metropolitan area:

REACH OUT. Studies can be taxing, but help is available through many different channels when needed.

1. Otaniemi: Otakaari 12, Espoo

2. Töölö: Töölönkatu 37 A, Helsinki

You may use the services of any health center, also in other municipalities, if you wish to do so. Further information can be found on yths.fi.

Exhaustion and Concerns

In case of any concerns or exhaustion, you can turn to the students’ support center Nyyti or the university pastors of Aalto. You can find further information at nyyti.fi and aalto.fi/ en/services/mental-wellbeing-support-ataalto. With study-related challenges, you can turn to student affairs services at your school or Aalto’s study psychologists, psychologist@ aalto.fi

Inappropriate Behaviour and Harassment

You do not have to tolerate inappropriate behaviour. If you have witnessed harassment or experienced harassment yourself, you can con-

tact AYY’s trained harassment contact people Ronja Mäkinen or Lauri Jurvanen at equity@ ayy.fi for help and support. The service is strictly confidential. You can also get in touch with the Manager of Academic Affairs of Aalto BIZ Pia Lahti ( pia.lahti@aalto.fi), KY’s Executive Director Aada Hakakoski (aada.hakakoski@ ky.fi), or your own tutor.

Different Places, One KY

Since the spring of 2019, the business students at Aalto University have been at two campuses: Otaniemi and Mikkeli. The Otaniemi campus consists of various locations ranging from KY’s and AYY’s event spaces to multiple student restaurants as well as optimal spaces for studying.

At the Otaniemi campus, students at the School of Business carry out their studies at the Undergraduate Centre on Otakaari 1 and the new School of Business at Ekonominaukio 1. If you want to meet other Aalto business students during the day, go check out KY Corner, a break room located in the U-wing of the Undergraduate Centre. KY’s Office, Espilä, and event space Saha are both just a few minutes away from the Undergraduate Centre and right next to the new School of Business.

Espilä

Espilä is located at Konemiehentie 4, right opposite of KY’s event space Saha. Espilä is where the KY Board, employees and the staff of the KY Foundation work. Espilä has conference rooms available for reservation and a common working space open to all KY members. Don’t hesitate to drop in for a cup of coffee (it’s free for all KY members!) and say hi to the KY Office members!

When in need of KY-related assistance, don’t hesitate to turn to KY’s member services. They will assist you in, for example, buying KY products or going through the lost and found after a slightly longer and blurrier night. Member services can be reached during service hours or by emailing at service@ky.fi. You can, of course, always come by and get the help you need in person!

Saha

Saha is the event space and home to parties and KY activities in Otaniemi. Saha is located at Konemiehentie 3, right across the street from Espilä. The space is reserved entirely for KY’s use, and it is available for KY’s volunteers’ reservations.

KY Corner

KY Corner is a break room for all business students, conveniently located on the first floor

of the U-wing in the Undergraduate Centre. KY Corner is a natural place to meet and hang out with other business students during your school day or after the lectures. KY Corner is also known for the Sports and Wellbeing Committee’s casual events such as the popular Cake Buffet

Mikkeli

The Aalto University School of Business, Mikkeli Campus is located in the city centre of Mikkeli, in the Southern Savo region of Finland, and it offers the Bachelor’s degree programme in International Business (BScBA).

KY Board

A group of KY members is selected annually to lead KY forward. This year, the Executive Board has eight members who are spending their 2024 helping the KY community. We’re here for you!

The KY Board is the face and voice of all members. The Board works almost full-time, which means you might not see them during lectures. Board members spend their days together as a board figuring out KY’s trendiest questions, representing all over the place or each working on their own duties in their sectors.

The Board runs the ongoing operations at KY. Some of them are more planned, like taking care of the finances and recruitment. Other duties are more emergent, such as culture projects, resource mapping, or organising a Nordic business conference.

A large chunk of time is designated to represent KY. This includes speaking on behalf of students to Aalto University decision-makers, advocating for stakeholders, keeping in touch with our fellow business students abroad and in Finland, and a lot more.

In addition, each board member has two or more specific responsibilities. The following pages will present you with what each of our board members does on a regular basis.

The Chair of the Board Tilda Leikola splits her time between leading the board, working together with the Executive Director and the Vice-Chair in managing things at the KY Office, and representing KY in various places and positions. She is also part of the KY Foundation Board.

The Vice-Chair of the Board, responsible for Finances and Premises, Kasper Palmqvist , is to Tilda what Sam is to Frodo. He steps in whenever needed, in addition to having his own responsibilities, such as searching for a permanent home in Ota niemi for all of KY’s members or carrying the Board's budget on his shoulders.

Last but definitely not least, we are here for you! We’re passionate about KY and love to meet as well as chat with members like you. So don't be shy, say hi when you see us around, or drop us a message if you need help. We, the KY Board, are here to make your university journey an unforgettable one.

Best wishes from the KY Board ’24.

Academic Affairs

How are students being advocated for at the Business School? Is someone looking out for my best interest in academic decisionmaking? We at the Academic Affairs sector of KY aim to do just that!

For all students, academics are an integral component of everyday life. This is why we aim to address issues and drive forward change that benefits our members.

KY’s Academic Affairs sector consists of two board members responsible for improving academic wellbeing; this year they are Liina Röyskö and Kerttu Lammi. Additionally, there are also other student representatives, called hallopeds, involved in decision-making at the School and the University. They, together with the board members responsible for Academic Affairs from each of the ten subject clubs, work tirelessly toward the same goal of academic wellbeing. This advocacy work is mainly done in meetings with the school’s management.

At the School of Business, the decisionmakers are often eager to get student input and hear our perspective. This is why student representatives from the KY Board and subject clubs are often asked to join and give student input on new projects.

This all might sound very ambiguous, which it can be sometimes.

At KY, the Academic Affairs Committee (KOVA) aims to make student advocacy more tangible and bring it closer to our members. Among some projects and initiatives, at the Tea and BIZcuits afternoon in the Business School lobby, KOVA gathers feedback from students while serving coffee, tea and biscuits. KOVA also organises the Teacher of the Year vote.

How Can I Get Involved?

We want to emphasise the importance of giving course feedback at the end of each course. Additionally, we encourage first-year students to apply for the Academic Affairs Committee KOVA, subject clubs, and even to be hallopeds. Application periods for these opportunities take place later in the fall.

If you have anything on your mind, don’t hesitate to contact KY’s Academic Affairs sector. We will make sure you are heard! <3

Communications

What is happening next fall, where, and when? If you are still unsure, there's no need to worry – KY's Communications sector will keep you informed about all the exciting things happening at KY.

At KY, there is always a lot going on, and the volume of information can sometimes feel overwhelming. KY’s Communications sector coordinates our official channels and trains and assists volunteers in using the channels. The sector also communicates the most relevant information to business students, including upcoming events, studies, student benefits, career opportunities, and opportunities for volunteering.

The Communications sector is the largest sector at the KY Office, with expertise in communications, visuals and branding, editing Kylteri magazine, and IT. Board Member Emma Walsh and Communications Coordinator Pyry Pietikäinen are responsible for communicating everything that’s happening in our community.

Art Director Saana Rauvala oversees all visuals at KY, working on projects ranging from campaign graphics to designing the layout of Kylteri magazine. The AD works closely with Ahmed Hewidy, the Editor-in-Chief of Kylteri, who manages all aspects of the student magazine. IT Coordinator Aapo Rissanen is responsible for IT tasks, including maintaining IT systems at KY’s premises and overseeing new technology projects.

We are here to answer any questions you may have about our areas of expertise. By following KY’s official communications channels (which are listed on page 13), you will stay up-to-date with all that is happening at KY throughout the year!

Corporate Relations

What do I want to do when I graduate? What companies offer summer jobs for business students? How will I land my first internship position? We are here to help you find answers to these questions and many more!

Already as students, career is an integral part of our lives for most of us. Summer jobs and internships offer an experience that is worth its weight in gold. Therefore, KY wants to help you reach your best potential and jumpstart your career! KY is dedicated to showing you the best career opportunities and helping you land your dream job.

KY's Corporate Relations sector consists of two members of the KY Office and KY's Corporate Relations Committee CORE . The sector consists of Board Member Hector Björklund and Corporate Relations Coordinator Nicolas Salomaa . KY’s mission is to bring companies and students together in a manner that benefits both. KY offers students a lot – students discover which companies are most interested in us. They also gain insight into what lies beneath each company's surface. Furthermore, students can network with company representatives, giving them an edge when applying for jobs. In return, companies have the opportunity to identify and attract KY’s top talent.

KY offers a diverse set of ways for companies to get involved with students. We aim for our portfolio to consist of relevant and interesting partner companies, such that every student can find suitable opportunities for themselves. We especially emphasise face-to-face encounters between students and companies, which are facilitated during CORE's events and excursions. Companies are also present on our dollar green overalls, social media, and print media. In addition, the finest events of KY wouldn't be possible without the support of our partners.

Remember that it's never too early to get hands-on experience in working life. Don't forget to join the exclusive KY Career groups on Telegram, and LinkedIn (find these listed on page 13)! This way, you will get an edge in your career by hearing about the best opportunities. Come meet us – we’re happy to tell you more about corporate relations at KY!

Community

Every KY member is a part of our welcoming community, and we all partake in building it. KY’s Community sector is the biggest and brightest consisting of culture, new students, student wellbeing and clubs. This sector is also responsible for supporting and thanking our volunteers, including tutors as well as members of clubs, project teams, and subcommittees.

Wellbeing

Uni years are often described as the best years of our lives – and no wonder why! However, alongside all the fun, everyone faces struggles and challenges from time to time. Supporting the wellbeing of our members is a top priority for KY, and one of the main tasks of KY Board Member Liina Röyskö and Association Coordinator Ella Kuhalampi together with KY’s very own Sports and Wellbeing Committee LiHy. Besides feeling good, it is crucial that each of us feels safe and respected in our community. KY wants to provide a safe and equal environment for everyone, and has created a set of rules for the type of behaviour we expect in everyday KY life. Be sure to check out our renewed Code of Conduct on ky.fi!

Culture

KY is committed to delivering the best student experience for all its members. Our Culture sector aims to make sure that everyone is welcome and appreciated in our community, and that there is always something fun waiting just around the corner. We aim to create opportuni-

ties for every student to find something they’re interested in; for everyone to find their place in this huge community. KY is extremely proud of its wide array of volunteers and strong traditions, from our beloved Annual Ball Week, Wappu and Autumn Festival to various Kuntis parties. The Culture sector consists of the Board Member responsible for Culture, Oona Sorala, her partner-in-crime, Culture Producer, Vappu Valtonen, our beloved subcommittees KUJ, NESU-KY and KY-Sub, and last but not least, the Cultural Committee KUVA . As said before, our student culture would not be the same without our volunteers. Subcommittees and committees have over a hundred volunteers every year, and they play a huge part in our yearly traditions, and developing the student culture even further. Keep an eye out for information on various volunteer opportunities throughout the year – there might be something that catches your interest!

New Students

At KY, one of our top priorities is making sure new students feel warmly welcomed and eas-

ily become part of our community. The New Students sector ensures that your student life gets a smooth start by designating a trained tutor for you, organising the Orientation Week, and cooperating with the School of Business. Being a mursu, marsu or an exchange student at KY is an experience of a lifetime that can’t be replicated anywhere else.

The sector is led by Oona Sorala , the KY Board Member responsible for new students, Maria Saarinen, the Tutor Coordinator at the School of Business and Chair of the Tutor Committee ( TC), and Eelis Arokoski, KY Board Member for Master’s students and Chair of the Masters’ Committee (MC). Their main goal is to make sure every new student at the School of Business and KY has an easy start. This effort involves everyone from KY Office members to association volunteers.

Clubs

KY is the roof organisation for almost around 60 associations, most of which are clubs. KY’s Association Coordinator Ella Kuhalampi and the KY Board Member responsible for clubs, Eelis Arokoski, ensure that all clubs get as much support and guidance as they need.

KY’s clubs offer almost everything you could imagine, and play a key role in producing unforgettable experiences at KY. Anything from golf to wine tasting, skiing to investing... If you can come up with it, we most likely have a club for it! However, if you feel like something is missing, or you just have an amazing new idea you want to try out, you are more than welcome to either start a project or found a club of your own! Just contact Ella and she will respond to any questions you might come up with!

KY Foundation

The KY Foundation helps students achieve their professional, study-related, and extracurricular goals at the Aalto University School of Business.

The purpose of the KY Foundation is to enable the KY community to thrive, through supporting leisure activities, culture, sports, and the study success of business students at Aalto University. The KY Foundation supports students and associations both financially and through different resources like free spaces. With a yearly budget of 1.5 million euros, the KY Foundation works to ensure that Aalto University’s business students can enjoy the best student experience for years to come.

Over 600,000 euros of Grants Awarded Annually

The KY Foundation offers annual grants and subsidies to the KY community totalling over 600,000 euros. This is distributed to different clubs and associations that provide students with activities, services, and leisure. But you don’t have to have a club or association to reap the benefits of the grants. We also give out grants to individual students, or groups of students who come up with great ideas for a new project or event. So come up with creative ways to share joy to your fellow students and apply for a grant from the KY Foundation to make your dream into a reality! We also help with starting up new clubs and associations, so

if you have an idea for a new club, apply for a grant and leave your mark in the KY community. The latest information on current subsidies can be found at KY Foundation’s website (kyfoundation.fi) and the grant portfolio is developed according to students’ needs. All application forms, subsidy requirements, and news are also posted on the website. Apply now!

Free Premises for Business Students

The KY Foundation provides students and KY’s associations free space to operate and organise events in. On the Otaniemi campus, the KY Office “Espilä” and the party venue “Saha” stand on opposite sides of Konemiehentie, providing KY members and associations space for different purposes. In addition, we have a large event space in Betonimiehenkuja. Whether organising larger meetings, parties or chilling with coffee, these buildings provide business students the space they need, all free of charge!

The independent Kylteri magazine (read more on kylteri.fi) is also published by the KY Foundation.

Student-Led Decision-Making

Since the KY Foundation has such a big role in the KY community, it is important that students are also the ones calling the shots. Decision-making in the KY Foundation is led by the Executive Board and its Chairperson Aino Piipponen

The Board consists of a student majority and advisory members. The advisory members

are top professionals in their fields of asset and real estate management and help ensure that the Foundation’s assets are managed in the best possible way. To ensure the Foundation keeps the students’ best interest at heart, the Board is overseen by the Supervisory Council which is made up of KY Association’s representative council members. The Foundation also employs a Managing Director Arttu Lääkkölä, who oversees the day-to-day operations.
