ou made it! Again this spring getting into Aalto University School of Business has been a goal of many but only a fraction of the applicants’ dreams were fulfilled, and you are one of them. Getting accepted to the nation’s best business school is an achievement as such, but now the real adventure is about to begin.
INTRO
In student advocacy we’ll make sure that our students’ voices are heard in the decision-making bodies both in the School of Business and on the national level. Thanks to our warm relationship with the school we can influence towards it to make sure your learning experience will be too, the best in the nation.
Traditionally the first year students have been called “mursus” instead of “fuksis”. Bear this title with pride because you’ve done a great effort to achieve it and not many get this title.
Our work and career sector will provide you useful tools in getting the job of your dreams as well as direct job opportunities. We arrange several careerrelated events, excursions, benefits and showcase a variety of career paths.
Aalto University Business Students, familiarly known as KY, is the student organization and community for the students at the School of Business. For over 107 years we have been influencers of the society. We packed a ship full of Finnish export products and sailed it abroad, built Amer-Tupakka and helped to found the first Finnish commercial radio station, today known as Radio City.
But how can you transform these resources into YOUR best student life experience? I encourage you, mursu, to keep an open mind, try new things and get involved. KY is a community where everyone can be themselves and find like-minded people. Student life at KY is full of possibilities, you never know what kind of opportunities and new interesting people wait around the corner!
But what does KY provide for its members today? Services can be summarized into three categories: community, student advocacy and work & career. We aim to provide all the resources to make your student life as unforgettable as possible. Under KY there’s a wide range of clubs, committees and subcommittees that members can be a part of. And if you feel like something is missing, no worries, we will help you to found your own!

Throughout its long history, KY has formed a colorful and traditional culture, one which students still enjoy today. From parties to the KY ribbon, from overalls to the Wappu Parade – KY’s traditions are respected and they are valued as the basis of our rich student life. What is KY? For the years to come, Aalto University Business Students, or KY, will be the home and community to you and your fellow mursus. Founded in 1911, KY has ever since provided its members services and benefits, student advocacy and memorable experiences, as well as friendships that last a lifetime. KY exists solely for – and because of – its members. Many students choose to volunteer their time and know-how to help run, for example, KY's associations, committees and project teams. Every degree student at Aalto University School of Business may join KY and the membership is free of charge. KY Foundation, for its part, was founded to support the students at Aalto University School of Business. The foundation distributes grants and subsidies, for example, to KY's associations, individual projects

KY’s history in a nutshell 1910s: KY’s first steps The Helsinki School of Economics Student Association (Kauppakorkeakoulun Oppilasyhdistys) was founded on October 7th, 1911 as a student association for the first Finnish-speaking university-level business school. During its first years, the union had only around 70 members and limited financial resources. KY’s flag, student ribbon and emblem all date back to the start of the student union, and are still used to this day.
1920s: Partying despite the prohibition In 1923, the name of the association was changed – Helsinki School of Economics Student Union (KY) was founded. The prohibition of alcohol created its own set of challenges for KY’s active cultural sector, but thanks to clever students, one did not have to merely sip lemonade at parties. In 1927 the student union received its first own space but the dream of an own house had started to develop in the students’ minds.
1930s: KY Building in the horizon Financing an own building was a long process. Several fundraisers were organized, with a raffle

being the tip of the iceberg. At times the depression drove the entire construction project into a difficult situation, but willpower, hard work and a pinch of luck finally led to success and construction planning began in 1939.
1940s: KY Building is completed During World War II the school’s doors were open infrequently. Even though the war had slowed down the construction project, KY Building was finished in February 1940 and soon after 42 lucky KY members got to move into the top floors. The war also wasn’t enough to cancel KY’s traditional events like Annual Ball, Mursujaiset and Wappu.
1950s: To top off, smoke a Boston! After the war, it was time to focus on rebuilding the society and economy. KY made its first achievement in commercial entrepreneurship by founding the tobacco corporation Amer-Tupakka Oy in 1950, and thanks to cunning marketing, Amer’s Boston cigarettes quickly grew to be a widely popular brand. Also activity in clubs started to show signs of life and KY succeeded well in sports, often being unbeatable in academic leagues.

1960s: The decade of Finnfocus and television The huge export trade show, Finnfocus, held in London in 1968 is the biggest event in KY history. KY rented M/S Finnpartner from Amer, and the ship sailed to London to promote Finland and Finnish companies internationally. The project was a bold and risky investment, which ended up creating a lot of positive publicity. During the 60s KY was also active in the TV business: KY was a share-holder in Tesvisio, the company behind the first commercial TV channel in Finland. Student numbers increased quickly at the beginning of the 1960s leading to growing housing challenges. KY’s solution was to start building student housing on Ruusulankatu in Töölö and on Vaasankatu in Kallio.
1970s: Turning KY Building into office space Student union activities became all the more political in the 70s. Political battles and, as a result, frequent changes in the KY Board depict the time at KY. A hot topic was the fate of the KY Building – should existing student housing be kept or should the building’s financial potential be better utilized? After a long debate, KY finally decided to change the building’s dormitory into office space.
1980s: From pinstripes to overalls and politics to partying The student union’s activity wasn’t as political in the 1980s as in the previous decades. In the 80s, KY members partied at the student union’s own restaurants – one of the most popular nightclubs of the time, KY-Exit, was located in the KY Building. The use of overalls became more common as student life came closer to what it is today. In the whirlwind of the casino economy, KY began to diversify its stock ownings and professionals were hired to lead KY-owned companies through the Ekomen Group. KY was also active outside the student union,
and the media diligently followed KY’s affairs. KY continued searching for its limits and offered financing for creating a new radio channel, Radio City.
1990s: Emerging from depression The deep depression in Finland at the beginning of the decade severely affected KY. The Ekomen Group declared bankruptcy in 1992 and KY struggled with grave financial difficulties. To balance its finances KY sold its stock holdings in Amer. The Representative Council’s meeting leading to the decision was followed by the national news.
2000s: KY in the new millennium Increasing the service level was a major focus point of the first decade in the new millennium. In this spirit, KY created a fund for international exchange to support the students in their traveling expenses. In addition, the apartment offering kept on expanding when new apartment buildings were finished in Arabianranta in 2006 and on Arkadiankatu in 2009.
2010s: KY as an association As Aalto University and Aalto University Student Union were founded, KY’s status as a student union was retracted. KY as an association started its operations on the first of January 2010, and during the first years, KY searched for its place in the new union and looked for new directions. During the same year, KY Foundation begun operating to provide financial support and other resources for students and associations. In 2015, after more than 100 years in Töölö and 75 years in the KY Building, KY expanded to Otaniemi and focused the majority of its activities on Otaniemi campus. To embrace the Aalto community in full, KY changed its official name to Aalto University Business Students in 2016.

Events KY year is filled with various events – there definitely is something for everyone! Here are some of the highlights of the year gathered. Come to Mursu Expo to hear more and join KY Events on Facebook to stay updated.
ORIENTATION WEEK AND MURSUJAISET Orientation week is not only about adapting to the academic world, but also getting to know KY and Aalto, their associations and what they can offer. This includes events ranging from getting to know our community through Otasuunnistus and Aalto Party to getting to know your fellow mursus in Mursu Party. To balance the boozy nights of the orientation week, you get to know KY more thoroughly at Mursu Expo, where you will find out more about KY’s clubs, subcommittees, committees and other volunteering opportunities. You can get yourself familiar with the actors of KY by diving into this Guide beforehand! In addition, KY’s Sports and Wellbeing Committee LiHy organizes a playful sports event, Mursu Championships, where tutor groups compete against each other. One highlight of your fall, Mursujaiset, is an academic baptism for new BIZ students – we won’t, however, reveal too much information about the 24h experience beforehand! Save the date (and maybe the day after), because this is something not a single mursu wants to miss!
AUTUMN HIKE Did you know that surprisingly many Kylteris are enthusiastic outdoors people, who love sports and hiking? At KY, you have a possibility to become one

of them by joining the Autumn Hike organized every year. The hike goes all the way to the north, this year the hikers are heading to the beautiful northern Sweden. Even though the tickets were sold out already, you can ask if there are some last minute cancellations by contacting the Sports and Wellbeing Committee. Next year’s tickets will be sold during the spring.
AUTUMN CLASSIC The yearly tradition of Autumn Classic allows you to meet your Pykälä friends or to get some new ones. In Autumn Classic, you get a chance to compete against other enthusiasts in a rowing competition against Pykälä, the association of law students. Last year the trophy was won by KY, let’s continue this tradition this year as well!
SALES NIGHT Sales Night is a sales-oriented event carried out with an entertaining twist. Its main target is to bring the sales culture closer to students. Sales Night is a rather young concept, but during the last few years it has presented speakers such as Juhani Tamminen and our own alumnus Spekti. The event has usually sold out in minutes! Sales Night culminates in the Sales Champion competition. Do you have what it takes to be a champion?

AUTUMN FESTIVAL The highlight of October is without a doubt the Autumn Festival. The festival begins with the traditional III-kierros pub crawl which is followed by the glamorous Boston Night dinner and Masters’ Night for Master’s students. The week culminates in the legendary Sillis. This is the week you will receive your very own dollar-green overalls and get to wear them for the first time!
FEEL GOOD WEEKS KY’s Sports and Wellbeing Committee organizes events that enable you to balance your life between studies and relieve some stress. Feel Good Week is organized twice a year, next time in October. Mindfulness, cooking classes or training advice – the program of the week varies, but there surely is something for everyone.

KY WEEK The most amazing week of the year takes place in the early spring when it’s time to celebrate KY’s birthday! Next year we celebrate 108-year-old KY by elegant festivities. With its academic traditions and a special ambiance, the Annual Ball truly is the highlight of the KY year. After a night of continuous partying, students in dollar-green overalls fill KUJ’s buses, as the ever so adventurous Sillis is about to commence!
WAPPU Wappu is a student’s Christmas, New Year’s Eve and birthday all wrapped into one. KY Wappu is filled with various events, such as Kymppisuora pub crawl, NESU-KY’s traditional Wappu terrace, and a picnic at Ullanlinnanmäki. Before Manta gets her cap it’s time for the Wappu Parade – KY marches in one joyful group to Kauppatori. The celebration culminates in KY’s Wappukuntis at Kaivohuone. After a night of partying, students head to Ullis, where the first of May is spent mingling with friends and champagne flows all day long.

AALTO CITY CHALLENGE Aalto City Challenge is a one-day adventure competition organized during the spring. In this adventure you gather a team of 3 or 4, get your bikes and bike around the Helsinki area, stopping

by various checkpoints. The checkpoints include everything from climbing to escape rooms and allow you to challenge both your mind and strength.
KUNTIS PARTIES Kuntis parties are organized at Helsinki’s best nightclubs, and the entrance is usually free of charge. At a kuntis, you can mingle with your fellow students, enjoy student-priced drinks and listen to live music. The cultural subcommittee, KUJ, organizes official afterparties at KY’s Alakertsi for a couple of special Kuntis parties during the year which will continue ‘till the sun rises! LAULUILTA TRADITIONS AND SITSI PARTIES Lauluilta is a dinner party with long traditions. Cultural Committee KUVA organizes lauluiltas, where traditional songs from KY’s own songbook, Kiljukaula, are sung. Kiljukaula is actively used at lauluiltas but also in other get-togethers between current and former KY members. A lauluilta is one of the best ways to get to know more about the traditions and roots of KY, as singing has been a part of KY’s history for decades. At KY, the sitsi culture lives strong as well. Sitsi parties are quite close to a lauluiltas, but with their own traditions and manners. For instance, people usually wear overalls at sitsis, but dress a bit fancier for a lauluilta. Sitsi parties at KY are mainly organized by NESU-KY, one of the three subcommittees.

KY organizes numerous excursions during the academic year. Make sure to join in on them as they are a great way to meet the company representatives in person and to ask them about the firm and the possibilities they have to offer. You will probably make a good impression on your possible future employer!
PUB CRAWLS KY’s own Cultural Committee KUVA organizes two pub crawls annually - one in October during Autumn Festival and one in April. III-kierros takes place along the routes of trams number 2 and 3 and the legendary Hukkaputki introduces students to East Helsinki as it takes over the subway tunnels. In addition, the aviation club KY-mppi organizes Kymppisuora and KUJ arranges rides to various pub crawls in different cities. WELCOME TO KY

What is Mursu Passport? There’s so much to see and do at KY, that sometimes it’s hard to keep track. Mursu Passport is designed to help you navigate through your first eventful autumn at KY, so come along and get involved! At the beginning of Orientation Week every mursu will get a Mursu Passport which is a booklet full of the coming autumn’s events and things to get done in order to become a fully fledged KY member. You will get points by completing all kinds of different activities from visiting info evenings and KY Office at Espilä to following KY on various social media channels. Attend these events and complete the tasks in order to earn points and get extraordinary KY prizes! The more points you earn, the better prizes you’ll get. Keep your passport up-to-date by marking down the events and actions you have attended. Everyone who returns the passport and has earned the required amount of points will be rewarded. In addition to this, three mursus with the highest points will get a special reward at Mursujuhlat, so don’t forget to return your passport! The passports are collected in November before Mursujuhlat. Keep an eye on KY’s social media channels for further information about returning the passports. During the autumn you will get to know the culture, traditions, various events and different actors of KY. The purpose of the passport is not to visit as many parties as you can, but to encourage you to try different activities and find the ones that interest you the most. In addition to this, you will get to know interesting people and actors that will make your study years truly unforgettable!

FOUNDATION KY Foundation supports the studies, hobbies, student life and internationalization of KY members by financing Aalto University Business Students and its independent associations. The daily operations are run by the Managing Director, while major decisions are made by the Foundation’s own board.

The beautiful capital of Southern Savonia has been home to the eastern campus of Aalto University School of Business for almost 30 years. Probba ry is the student organization of Aalto University School of Business, Mikkeli Campus. We are the only entirely English-speaking Bachelor’s degree programme in business and we have altogether around 250 Finnish and international students. Our international atmosphere is something we are very proud of here in Mikkeli. The professors here come from several different universities from all around the world, and they teach the courses in three-week modules. Even though the studying is extremely intensive, we also know how to make the most of our two years here in Mikkeli during free time. What Mikkeli lacks in volume it sure makes up for in great atmosphere. Every year this KY’s little brother organizes several events. Just ask your tutor about the notorious Mikkeli Road Trip! We hope to see many mursus there next time!

Aalto University Student Union, AYY, is your own student union. AYY brings together approximately 15,000 students of arts, design, business and technology. All students undertaking their Bachelor's or Master's degree at Aalto University are required to be members of AYY. Exchange students and doctoral students can also join AYY if they wish to do so.

AYY provides and produces services and opportunities for its members, ranging from the student calendar and student housing to incredible volunteer positions. The student union works to promote your wellbeing and to develop the quality of teaching at Aalto University. Aalto community offers Aalto students great opportunities to take part in all kinds of interdisciplinary events and activities. Keep your eyes open and also explore events outside of the KY bubble to enjoy interdisciplinary encounters! When Aalto University was formed, the vision was to create an innovation university with a great interdisciplinary community. During the last years, we have taken giant leaps towards making this vision come true. The Bachelor’s students of Aalto BIZ have moved from Töölö to Otaniemi and the School of Business as a whole will follow at the turn of the year. We will share a building with Aalto ARTS, that moves to Otaniemi already in the beginning of this academic year. This means that all the students of Aalto University in the Helsinki metropolitan area will finally be centralized on one campus! There is a countless number of events and interdisciplinary activities organized at Otaniemi campus – the majority of them open to all Aalto students. During Orientation Week there are, for example, Otasuunnistus and Aalto Party, which are
great opportunities to get to know the Otaniemi campus area and AYY associations. Different KY clubs and associations also work towards building a stronger Aalto community and hence, communicate and cooperate with other student associations' cultural actors on a regular basis. To make the most out of your time as a student, make sure to get to know students outside of KY as well. A good way to start is by getting to know your Aaltotutor team that your tutor will introduce you to during orientation and the following autumn. Subcommittees
KY has three subcommittees, each of them organizing unforgettable parties and other events. In addition to making student life more fun for KY members, the subcommittees usually have their own traditions and a lot of fun of their own. Many former members of KUJ, NESU-KY and KY-SUB look back at their subcommittee years with great fondness and remain friends with each other for the rest of their lives.

KUJ, more formally Kulttuurijaosto, is the Cultural Subcommittee of KY. For decades, KUJ has ensured that the students of KY get their fair share of parties and events – and will continue to do so for many years to come. The most visible events KUJ arrange include parties like Sillis, Club Lagoon (the largest student club party in Helsinki) and KY’s official entrance exam party. In September, KUJ will welcome you to the student community at Mursujaiset, a 24-hour ordeal for new students, for which you should already brace yourself. You can spot members of KUJ by the furry collars on their overalls. KUJ forms a tight-knit community, and former members of the board are often active even years after graduation. As a member of KUJ you become a part of something much larger than just student life – you’ll find yourself at the heart of student culture. KY International Subcommittee Association, KY-Sub, is one of the three subcommittees of KY. KY-Sub is responsible for organising events and trips for exchange students and international degree students. KYSub organises an international sits party as well as trips to Lapland and to St. Petersburg, just to name a few. There is also an own event for mursus: Mursulaiva! If you feel like internationality is something you want to integrate into your studies as much as possible, KY-Sub is the right place for you as it is the biggest international organisation in the whole Aalto community. As a subcommittee, KY-Sub feels more like a big family with a unique and warm atmosphere. The friends and contacts you make through this community will most probably last for your whole lifetime. NESU-KY, the association of Nordic Economics Students’ Union at KY, is the largest subcommittee of KY. It also functions as a part of a larger organization NESU that aims to a collaboration between nordic economics students. NESU-KY organizes most of the sitsi parties held at KY. The event portfolio also includes conferences, career events, cottage trips and the legendary Wappu Terrace. New members are welcomed every fall. Once you become a member of NESUKY, you will be a part of the community for the rest of your studies. You will get a chance to build lifelong friendships and connections all over Finland and beyond. As a part of the NESU-team you will also learn beneficial communication and leadership skills. KOVA KY’s Academic Affairs Committee KOVA is the committee responsible for student advocacy. The committee supervises students’ interests, takes part in the academic discussion and cooperates with the School of Business. KOVA aims to improve studies and enable smooth daily life in school. For example, the committee maintains the Studies page (kyweb.fi/studies) which contains important information about study matters and possibilities to give anonymous feedback and comment courses on Fringe Study Guide. KOVA also organizes surveys, academic events such as Proffalauluilta and the famous Teacher of the Year -voting in the end of the year.

KUVA As you may have noticed, KY’s calendar is full of different events and activities. Their purpose is to bring students together, build our community stronger and offer unforgettable moments for every KY member. KUVA’s mission is to uphold and advance KY’s culture, and to do so in great company and spirit! LIHY The Sports and Wellbeing Committee LiHy organizes a wide range of events to support students’ physical and mental wellbeing and to build a sense of KY community. The events include anything we recall a kylteri may need to balance out the student life, from a free of charge cake buffet and a wine and dine night to a multidisciplinary biking adventure Aalto City Challenge and a week-long hiking trip in Swedish Lapland. The members of the freshest committee in town can be recognized by their fashionable three-stripe jackets, their big smiles and (sometimes way too) high energy levels. A year in the committee gives the members not only lots of new friends, but also a unique opportunity to organize events and practice leadership, marketing and teamwork skills. The committee’s goal is to provide students with unforgettable memories - and of course to have fun!
MASTERS’ CLUB While it may feel that most of KY’s events are filled with and meant for Bachelor’s level students, Masters’ Club makes sure that our masters have top quality occasions to relax and meet fellow MSc students throughout the year. Unlike some student events, those organized by Masters’ Club are mostly on Fridays because it is understandable that Masters’ students may have all kinds of commitments besides school to take care of. But when the more seasoned academics do have a night off, Masters’ Club will make sure that it will be a night to remember. The Club members are both experienced KY actives as well as those willing to take a chance on the student life at the latter stages of their studies. If you’re a MSc student, you could be in the Club next year. Who said Masters’ students can’t have fun?

SALES ACADEMY KY’s very own Sales Academy brings companies closer to students. This dynamic and energetic committee is in charge of corporate related events at KY, such as Banking Night and Sales Night. In these events you get to meet representatives of different companies and sometimes even show your skills to them. The committee is also helping with organizing the company excursions that offer possibilities for you to get to know the business cultures of our partners during your studies. Sales Academy negotiates and promotes KY’s member benefits – one of the services KY offers its members. For more information about benefits, check out page 84 or kyweb.fi/ kybenefits. All current and previous committee members can be recognized by pinstriped sleeves on their overalls.
TUTOR COMMITTEE Likely, your first touch to KY and School of Business has been your very own tutor. Tutor Committee is responsible for recruiting and training all the tutors, as well as organising events for them, e.g. Tutor cottage in the summer. Tutors lead you, mursus, to the world of Aalto, academia, KY and a memorable student life. Tutor Committee makes sure that all tutors are top-notch and can create a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for the new students. This year Tutor Committee consists of Tutor Coordinator, seven committee members and KY Board’s new students representative. Committee members are either responsible for bachelor’s, exchange or master’s tutors and while supporting these tutors, they learn valuable project and team management skills. Members of the committee wear committee t-shirts and are always willing to answer questions about tutoring!

Currently KY has two project teams but new ones are created every now and then as new projects are kicked off.
ANNUAL BALL COMMITTEE
ENERKY
Bringing light and sparkle to the cold and dark winter, KY’s Annual Ball is the single most glamorous evening of the year. This most traditional event at KY cherishes our centennial traditions, celebrates our strong community and takes a big role in honouring our active members. This year KY’s birthday party was held in combination of two venues, the dinner at restaurant Bank and the dances and afterparty at the glamorous Kappeli. The Annual Ball is organized by the Annual Ball Committee chosen during the autumn, usually around October. The responsibilities are allocated between the members, who are lead by one chairman. Duties vary from invitations to decorations, all the way to corporate relations. Even though the Annual Ball is our most traditional celebration, each committee makes it look like their own. Every year the Ball goes down in history as a unique piece of our culture.
EnerKY is a project team of sports tutors at KY whose role is to organize low threshold sports events and tryouts for KY members. These low-effort and lowcost events are held to inspire business students to try new ways of exercising and having fun in great company: past events have included e.g. twerking, bouldering and beach volley! EnerKY makes these events possible by cooperating with AYY and Unisport. This project team isn´t only for top-level athletes but for anyone who wants to enjoy the spirit of this energetic and inventive group or fulfil themselves by creating their fellow students opportunities to move. Whether you want to try a new sport or continue your existing hobby during your study years, there sure is something for everyone. During the Orientation Week you can get to know the sports clubs at Wellbeing Morning while enjoying a light breakfast.
A!DVENTURES A!dventures brings adventure sports closer to students. We’re all things outdoors, from multisport to hiking to ice climbing and beyond. Some highlights of our events are try outs for adventurous sports like ice climbing, kayaking and orienteering. We also join different sports events from trail marathons to Jukola relay or just head outdoors to enjoy camping and hiking. We collaborate with companies and other Aalto sports clubs to organize sport events such as Aalto City Challenge and TFXtreme. You are also very welcome to join our After Work A!dventures; evenings with activities, for example supping, bouldering and swimming. Whether you’re a couch-potato or an experienced marathoner, as long as you are into any outdoor activity don’t hesitate to get in touch! 32 FBC-KY FBC-KY, also known as ‘The Snakes’, is Aalto University’s floorball club for business students. During its five-year history the club has succeeded in winning a couple of prizes already, Finnish university championships in 2014 and 2015, and bronze in 2017 and 2018, being the highest achievements. The team practices weekly at UniSport Otaniemi and all KY members are welcome to participate. In addition, the team attends several floorball leagues and tournaments during the year. Some team members have played floorball for their entire youth and others have only started playing in the university, so whatever your skills are, you will fit in. FC KISSAT FC Kissat is a football club for female students in Aalto University. FC Kissat is a team about good fun and exercise, and is open to players of all levels. We have members from first year students to recently graduated, all differing in our football experience but share the passion for this sport. FC Kissat welcomes all Aalto University female students to come and join the fun with us! All exchange students are also warmly welcomed, even for short exchange periods. We have practices once a week, during summer time outdoors and during winter time indoors. In winter we have futsal trainings in Kumpula Unisport and during summer we train outside in Tali. HERNESAAREN NÄÄDÄT Hernesaaren Näädät – the one and only ice hockey team of KY. Being one of the school’s most traditional sports clubs, Näädät promises you: lifelong friends, enjoyable hockey and the best company in Aalto BIZ! Since the beginning of the 90’s, the home of Näädät has been the magnificent ice rink of Hernesaari. The team plays in division 3 in the Helsinki region and trains on a weekly basis sharing their passion for ice hockey. Also, Näädät organizes several top-class events varying from legendary sauna evenings to the Academic Classic, the highestlevel ice hockey rivalry in Helsinki, which is played against Hanken in front of hundreds of students every year. KY-KANNUS KY-Kannus keeps up the riding traditions at Aalto University School of Business. Kannus gives an opportunity for students to continue their hobby while studying at university and encourages the new horse enthusiasts to try out riding. KY-SAIL KY-Sail is the Aalto University School of Business sailing club. Our mission is to foster sailing culture in all its forms by organizing various sailing related activities, which have gained a legendary reputation among Aalto students over our 10 year history. One of our largest events is the annual sailing trip to the Mediterranean, gathering approximately 80 students each fall. We also organize the biggest and definitely the wildest crayfish party in Finland. Our other events include Summer Cruise, a big sailing boat (galeas) party just outside Helsinki, and sailing days where anyone can learn the basics of the sport. KY-SLICE FORE! Golf is a very popular sport in the business world and with its 30 years of history, KY’s very own golf club KY-Slice is one of the most traditional clubs KY has to offer. KYSSI KYssi is the tennis, badminton, squash and table tennis club for students of Aalto University. We organize various tournaments and get-togethers for racket sport enthusiasts. Our events generally consist of a sport and a social portion in a relaxed and fun setting. KYssi aims to spread the joy of racket sports by bringing people with different skillsets together to play. Our flagship event is the infamous KYssi OPEN, which is an all-inclusive tennis tournament weekend in the rustic countryside of Finland. AKYSTIC Akystic is a unique cover band group consisting mostly of students and alumni of KY. KY-SPEKSI KY-Speksi is an interactive musical comedy, created by the students of the Aalto University School of Business, although students from other disciplines are welcomed to join as well. This ambitious yet playful production combines music, dancing and out-of-this-world performances – not forgetting the mind-blowing storyline. The actors either follow the storyline or the audience’s directions. To see a part of the scene replayed by improvising, a spectator can shout “Omstart!” and even add a definition. For example, “Omstart Game of Thrones!” gives the audience the pleasure of seeing the part replayed in Westeros style. In KY-Speksi you get to show your skills either on stage, behind the curtains or in various production teams. The application time for next year’s production starts early in the fall. KY-MPPI The aviation club KY-mppi is one of the most active clubs of KY. KY-mppi organizes a wide variety of events from skydiving to cultural events, big and small. The annual Kymppisuora, a pub crawl that starts KY’s Wappu, and Uusi Nousu twice a year after Boston Night and KY’s Annual Ball are traditional events organized by KY-mppi. Other events from the past include a wine tasting, movie nights and cottage trips, often done in collaboration with other student clubs. 36 KYL – HELSINKI ACADEMIC MALE CHOIR We are looking for men who can sing. As the oldest and most prestigious of KY’s clubs, KYL has changed the notion of what male choir singing is about. With us, your vocal chords will produce music ranging from Sibelius to Katy Perry while performing in top concert halls from Japan to Iceland and nightclubs at Mummotunneli (don’t ask) or wherever duty calls. KYL (“Kauppakorkeakoulun Ylioppilaskunnan Laulajat”) is one of Finland’s top male choirs. We have won international competitions and published critically acclaimed albums. We are more interested in a good attitude than a broad musical background. Do notice, however, that KYL operates and sings in Finnish, so willingness to learn the language is a must! We can offer you singing instruction, an appreciation of classical and not-so-classical music, trips to the stages of the world, but most importantly, a lifelong brotherhood. KYN The Female Choir KYN has always made music with ambition, passion and a creative angle. KYN’s musical strength lies in its expressiveness, rhythmic competence and unique repertoire. KYN has profiled itself particularly as an interpreter of ethnic jazz. KYN has played a pioneering role in combining choir with a jazz band and cooperating with professional musicians. Subject clubs represent the variety of subjects taught at Aalto University School of Business. Each study programme has its own subject club organizing leisure time activities and maintaining good relations with the faculty. The clubs also arrange excursions to visit future employers and familiarize students with the fields in which they will work. Aalto Economics is the subject club for all economics students in Aalto University. Aalto Marketing Society (AMS) is the association of marketing students at Aalto University School of Business in Finland. CEMS CLUB HELSINKI CEMS Club Helsinki is the subject club of the CEMS Master’s in International Management program. CEMS MIM is a one-year program that includes an exchange semester at another CEMS university, CEMS courses, an extensive business project, an international internship and seminars familiarising the students with skills required in working life. Thus, CEMS Club Helsinki belongs to the global network of CEMS Clubs. CEMS Club Helsinki organizes events and gatherings with the aim of bringing people together, creating new ideas and lifelong friendships as well as offering opportunities for professional development. JURY Jury is a subject club for business law students, established in 2003. The club brings together business law students, aiming to protect its members’ interests and study opportunities as well as improve relations to future employers. KY ACCOUNTING KY Accounting is the subject club for accounting students, operating as a link between students and three important groups – the faculty, the corporate world and other students with like-minded interests. Thirdly, the club brings accounting students together by organizing relaxed events that enable networking with future professionals. Representative Council The Representative Council (edustajisto or “edari” in Finnish) is the highest decision-making body of KY. Essentially its purpose is to make sure that KY is acting in the best interest of its members.
The Representative Council decides on all major issues of the association, therefore determining what KY is, what it stands for and what KY actually does today and in the years to come. In 2018, the Representative Council has been e.g. planning our future premises, established Task Forces to supervise the Key Strategic Initiatives of the new strategy and discussing the digitalization of KY’s services. The Council operates at the very heart of KY, which makes it a great viewpoint to what’s happening in our community! The Representative Council meetings are held usually once a month, either in Otaniemi or Töölö, and the meeting invitation along with materials are posted on KY’s website a week before the meeting. The actual decisions are of course made in the meetings, but they are just the culmination of the council work: a lot of hours go into preparation, discussion and planning as well. Representative Council is not all serious business though: traditional meeting afterworks are a great place to ease off a bit and get to know your fellow Council members, and we occasionally organize some other leisure events as well. The Representative Council is elected every two years: the next Representative Council elections

will be held in fall 2019 simultaneously with the election of the Representative Council for our student union, AYY. The current Representative Council was elected last year, and it consists of 21 members and 42 deputy members from all three campuses (Otaniemi, Töölö and Mikkeli). This current twoyear term is also historic in a sense that for the first time the Council works primarily in English and we have an international student in the Council. Every KY member has the right to vote in the elections and run to become a member of the Representative Council - this means you as well!

Kylteri is our own student magazine that provides sharp journalism for students at Aalto University. The magazine features articles on student life, interesting people, alumni stories and phenomena of the society.
Celebrating its 20th birthday next year, Kylteri was founded in 1999 to provide business students with new perspectives of student life as well as career and alumni stories. Today, Kylteri editorial team’s passion lies in developing Kylteri to be one of the top student magazines. During the past year Kylteri has covered various topics, including ethics of charity and alumni stories from interesting people, such as MP Elina Lepomäki and the founder of the movie theatre Riviera, Atte Laurila. This year, Kylteri has aimed for a more light-hearted style. The average distribution of Kylteri is 1000. All the articles can also be read online at kylteri.fi.

The magazine is published four times a year and the next issue will be published in late September. The process of making a new issue of Kylteri usually begins with an editorial meeting with the contributors – this is the time for brainstorming and making the page plan. You can take part in the meeting even if you aren’t willing to commit to writing a piece. Assisting Kylteri magazine requires capability to do independent work steered by deadlines. STUDIES University studies combine freedom and responsibility. Freedom means you can build a timetable of your own, work while studying and concentrate on the courses you find the most interesting. On the other hand, you have to be able to plan your own course combinations and to take the responsibility for your choices. Nonetheless, studying should not be too stressful. When problems occur or any questions arise, you can always trust to find help from the university, your student union AYY or KY. Turn the page to learn more about your future studies!

Studying at Aalto BIZ Studying at a university is quite different from your past studies: no strict curriculum exists, unless you’ve created one for yourself. Now you have the freedom to choose which courses to attend and how to build your individual timetable! This freedom comes with great responsibility – you have to make sure that you complete all the courses needed for your degree.
Once you are familiar with the study guidelines and have made your personal study plan, it would seem easy not to spare an extra thought for additional planning. However, from time to time it might be a good idea to stop for a minute, visit the course website WebOodi and check which courses are yet to be completed to finish your studies. The time it takes to finish your degree doesn’t depend only on your studying methods and planning, but also on your situation in life. The normative target time for finishing both your Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees is five years altogether, but changing life situations may swing it either way. Working, taking off on an international exchange or starting a family, for instance, may slow down your studies – on the other hand, clear scheduling and goal-oriented attitude could speed up your graduation.
The most important thing to keep in mind is that the teachers won’t give you ready-made answers, but rather the tools to solve problems. University studies aim at teaching you how to think and how to use the skills you’ve attained – not always at giving exact facts. In addition to lectures, most courses include assignments, teaching in small groups or exercise sessions. Teamwork and case presentations are both very common ways to learn and work, and they will accustom you to working methods needed also later on in your career. Most courses end in an exam, but in many courses the exam isn’t the only point of evaluation – cases and assignments may have a huge weight on your final grade as well.
STUDYING AT THE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS
At the beginning of your studies, your tutor will explain everything you need to know about your future studies and student life. Remember that you can also always ask your professor if you have any questions in mind. The professors can be contacted by email or face-to-face during their weekly reception hours – just remember to check the times beforehand! More often than not, the professors are quick to answer your questions. Alongside the official study guide and coursespecific web pages, empirical information and your fellow students’ takes on courses can be found on the student-operated Fringe Study Guide. The guide is available at kyweb.fi/voo, and it can be updated by anyone – the guide will become more useful with each given review. Once you have completed a course, please fill in your own review to expand the database! You study at Aalto BIZ (Aalto University School of Business), which is a part of Aalto University. Aalto University was formed in 2010 when three self-governing universities – Helsinki School of Economics, Helsinki University of Technology and the University of Art and Design Helsinki – merged into one. Today, the university consists of six relatively autonomous schools. You’re free to attend courses, or even complete your minor studies, at any of the schools of the university. To make it easier, there are several multidisciplinary programmes available. In addition, Aalto University is continuously striving to improve collaboration between the schools. It is also possible to include an internship in both the Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, for 6 ECTS each. This is a great way to get to know working life! BACHELOR’S DEGREE Your university-level business studies will begin with the Bachelor’s degree. At Aalto BIZ this lower university degree consists of common core and methodological studies, specialization and minor studies, language studies and elective studies. The Bachelor’s degree consists of 180 ECTS, which is equivalent to three years of studying, by recommendation. Management, Marketing and Corporate Law. This area of specialization will make up approximately one third of your Bachelor’s degree studies and define the area on which you will write your Bachelor’s thesis – your first step into the world of research and academic writing.
MASTER’S DEGREE The Bachelor’s degree might be a stepping stone into corporate life. However, you should bear in mind that most employers, especially in Finland, prefer or even require their employees to have a Master’s degree to be able to acquire higher positions within the company. For this reason it is not surprising that most business students opt to continue their studies until having finished both their Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. Many choose to deepen their knowledge in their Bachelor’s specialization area, but it is not uncommon to switch to something entirely different, either. In addition to Aalto BIZ’s Master’s programmes, there are also interdisciplinary Aalto programmes to choose from. The two-year Master’s degree is worth 120 ECTS and it comprises advanced specialization studies, minor and elective studies and the pro gradu thesis. Pro gradu follows the same principles of academic writing as the Bachelor’s thesis, but it is notably broader. Some students choose to get more familiar with working life while wrapping up their studies – it is possible to conduct your pro gradu research as a commission project for an interesting company. STUDENT FINANCIAL AID
AYY owns apartments that are rented out to students of Aalto University. However, AYY does not have adequate housing for all Aalto University students, so you should also search for an apartment through other channels. First-year students and students moving from outside the metropolitan area have priority in the housing queue. You can apply for housing as soon as you receive the confirmation of your place of study. A so-called freshman point is available for AYY's shared apartment queues. In order to receive the freshman point, you must apply for housing no later than in July or December, depending on when your studies begin.

Study grant Housing supplement (students in rental housing) 3. Student loan In order to receive student financial aid, you must gain at least 5 ECTS per supported month. However, the minimum is 20 ECTS per academic year, regardless of the number of months for which you receive student financial aid. In addition, since student financial aid is a social benefit, the amount of your income has an effect on how many months of student financial aid you are entitled to during the year. Students who begin their academic studies for the first time in 2016, have 30 months of financial aid for completing the lower university degree. When students have completed their Bachelor's degree and continue to the Master's degree, they are entitled to 21 additional months of financial aid. Monitor your income If you work or get a summer job among studies and earn more than the income limits of student financial aid allows, you need to return the extra financial aid on your own initiative or cancel the aid in advance for the number of months necessary. Read more at kela.fi/opintotuki-omat-tulot. You should avoid using financial aid months ‘unnecessarily’, as you will not get back the months already used, even if you still have studies left. Thus, do not use your financial aid for a sick leave or a holiday! If your sick leave is prolonged, you can apply for sickness allowance. HEALTH AND WELLBEING Finnish Student Health Service (YTHS) The Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS or YTHS in Finnish) takes care of university students' health. You can always make an appointment with FSHS when you are in need of health services. AYY's membership fee includes the insurance-based fee of FSHS. However, if FSHS is closed or you cannot make an appointment, you can always use your own municipal health centre or emergency services. During your first year of studies, you will receive a request to participate in the electronic health survey of FSHS (SÄTKY) which is designed for reviewing the health of the first-year students. It is very important that you respond to it. The survey will be sent to you via the online service Self and the registration is needed. After responding to the survey, you will receive an invitation to visit a public health nurse and/or dental care if necessary.

Inappropriate behaviour and harassment You do not have to tolerate inappropriate behaviour. If you have been treated inappropriately, the first step is to immediately tell the person in question that you do not approve his/her actions and insist the person to stop. If you have witnessed harassment or experienced harassment yourself, you can contact AYY’s trained harassment contact people Minna Mäkitalo (hairinta-nainen@ayy.fi) and Lauri Jurvanen (hairinta-mies@ayy.fi) for help and support. University Sport Services – UniSport UniSport offers Aalto University students inexpensive sports services and has sports facilities on the City Centre Campus of the University of Helsinki as well as in Kumpula, Meilahti, Otaniemi and Töölö. UniSport offers, amongst other things, group exercise classes, ball games, gyms and various courses. Further information at unisport.fi. TRANSPORTATION Metropolitan area A -50% discount is granted to students under 30 years of age if they are registered within the HSL region (Espoo, Helsinki, Kauniainen, Kerava, Kirkkonummi, Vantaa) and have the student status registered on their HSL travel card. The student discount is also granted to international exchange students residing temporarily within the regional ticket area if the criteria is otherwise met. Students and long-distance transport VR offers a student discount on long-distance train journeys. Further information can be found on VR’s website at vr.fi. The student discount of Matkahuolto is -50 % on bus journeys of over 60 kilometres. More information at matkahuolto.fi. You need to have your valid student card with you both on the train and the bus in order to be eligible for the student discount. Note that a receipt of a paid student union membership fee does not entitle you to the discount!
STUDENT MEAL SUBSIDY By presenting a valid student card or a receipt of a paid student union membership fee, you can get the student discount at student restaurants subsidized by Kela. Usually you need to pay around 2,6 euros for your lunch.
KY LEGAL ADVISOR KY’s legal advisor Matti Marttunen assists students in legal matters in confidence. The legal advisor is on duty once a week. STUDENT CARD As a student you get to enjoy various discounts and benefits – but in order to be eligible, you need to prove your student status by showing a valid student card. After having paid the membership fee of your student union, you may download the Frank App on Google Play or App Store to your phone to use your digital student card. If you want to order the physical card to show your student status, you will find the instructions at https://www.frank.fi/en/studentcard/. Once your student card is ready, Frank will deliver it to you at home. During the first weeks of fall this may take a while, as every new student will be ordering their card simultaneously. After receiving the card, get an updated year tag from AYY. Ask your tutor about the temporary pick-up points or visit AYY’s office during the service hours.

Three campuses, one KY The year 2015 was historical, as the business students at Aalto University were, for the first time ever, spread out to three campuses: Otaniemi, Töölö and Mikkeli. In 2019 we will make history again, when the Master’s level students will finally move to Otaniemi as well.
OTANIEMI At the Otaniemi campus, Bachelor’s students at the School of Business carry out their studies at the Undergraduate Centre on Otakaari 1, along with students of many other Aalto disciplines. If you want to meet other Aalto business students during the day, go check out KY Corner, a break room located in the U-wing of the building. KY’s Office, Espilä, and event space Saha are both just a few minutes away from the Undergraduate Centre.
ESPILÄ Espilä is located at Konemiehentie 4, right opposite of KY’s event space Saha and about 300 meters west from the School of Business premises. Espilä is where the KY Board, employees and staff of KY Foundation work at. Espilä has conference rooms available for reservation and common working space open to all KY members to use. Don’t hesitate to drop in for a cup of coffee and say hi to KY Board and secretaries! When in need of KY-related assistance, turn to the KY service secretary on call. SAHA Saha is the event space and home to parties and KY activities in Otaniemi. Saha is located at Konemiehentie 1, right across the street from Espilä. The space is reserved entirely for KY’s use, and it is available for KY’s volunteers’ reservations.
KY CORNER KY Corner is a break room for all business students, conveniently located on the first floor of the U-wing. KY Corner is a natural place to meet and hang out with other business students during your school day or after the lectures. There are, of course, a coffee maker, chargers and some sofas for relaxing. KY Corner is also known for Sports and Wellbeing Committee’s casual events such as the popular Cake Buffet organized twice a year.

KY Building is located on Pohjoinen Rautatiekatu, standing roughly between the Aalto BIZ Main Building and the Kamppi Shopping Center. There are two party venues in the building: Yläkertsi on the 3rd floor and Alakertsi in the basement. The basement is also home to many of KY’s associations. On the 3rd floor, you’ll find one of KY’s three service secretaries on Fridays from 15-17. They will assist you with all KY-related matters.
The premises are also home to Probba ry, the student organization of Aalto University School of Business, Mikkeli Campus. The office of Probba ry is located on the 3rd floor of the campus building (Lönnrotinkatu 5) and the Probba Lounge can be found in the basement of the building.

International opportunities KY is becoming more and more international every year. We want to make sure all our members feel included, hence our official communication language is English. INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE
INTERNATIONAL WEEKS
Every fall and spring hundreds of students take a step to unknown and spend a semester abroad in foreign universities. Aalto cooperates with some of the top universities in the world, and you can find potential exchange destinations from almost everywhere. The best thing is that Aalto supports every outgoing student with a 1500€ grant. Since we are sending people abroad, in return we welcome many exchange students to Finland every year. KY-Sub, the international subcommittee of KY, is responsible for ensuring that these students can experience the wonders of Finland and learn what sisu is. Turn to page 25 to learn more about KYSub.
International Weeks are organized all around the world so that business students can meet each other and learn about foreign cultures. The community behind the concept is International Week Cooperation Organization, IWCO. International Weeks include company visits and case work, but also a lot of fun and parties. KY informs about the upcoming weeks in KY Today Facebook group, so make sure to follow it.
TUTORING As a tutor you have two options to meet international students. The first option is to become an exchange tutor. The other possibility is to become a Master’s level tutor as the master’s programmes in Aalto BIZ are open for international students as well. Tutoring is a great opportunity to guide new students into the world of KY and student culture, as well as to help them in everyday life in Finland.
REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL The highest decisive power in KY is held by the Representative Council. Last year we opened the possibility for international students to run in the elections. The working language of the Representative Council was changed into English and we received one international member in the RepCo. If you want to participate in the most important decision making in KY and improve your language skills, make sure you are awake when the call for the council candidates opens in fall 2019!

The Finnish Business School Graduates was originally founded in 1935 by a group of former KY members. They longed for the tightly knit community previously provided to them by KY and again wanted to use free time together and support each other in working life. This lead to the creation of Finnish Business School Graduates originally known as Ekonoomiyhdistys. Nowadays, The Finnish Business School Graduates is a central organization for graduates and students in economics and business administration. It consists of 25 regional associations and 13 student societies and has over 50,000 individual members. It exists to improve its members’ success as individuals and does so by offering several services and benefits. The several advantages consist of educational, professional and legal advice as well as different benefits concerning for example banking and insurance functions. The Finnish Business School Graduates also negotiates labour market conditions on behalf of the members and does so always according to their needs and interests. You’re in for a ride and I will guarantee you that your next years will be one of the most memorable in your life. Besides the admission to the university, you also get to be part of KY now. At Espilä, we function as the nexus of KY’s activities and our job at the office is to make certain that you can get the most out of your student life at KY. One of the advantages of our long and proud history as a student organization is that we’re still able to field an office full of employees and to provide a variety of services to our members. Me, Esa-Pekka Mattila, the Secretary General of KY and the rest of the secretariat are here at the office to help you. Should you e.g. be needing to reserve to our premises, get your new membership sticker, buy some KY products or just need any help in general, don’t hesitate to visit us and we’ll try our best to assist you! In the following pages you will see that each member of KY Office has their own role and I’m certain that there will be a time in the near future when you’ll need to contact one of them. I’m the one responsible for managing the office administration and as such making certain that it works on like a well-oiled machine. I’m also the secretary of the Representative Council and responsible for the association’s norms and bylaws. Besides these tasks, the multi-year nature of my position ensures continuity in our constantly evolving and developing community. KY Board KY Board holds the highest executive power at KY. They are the face and voice of our members, making sure that our strategy and traditions are upheld, and ensuring that all KY members benefit from their membership.
The board consists of eight Aalto BIZ students and is chosen by the Representative Council for a oneyear term each fall. Board membership is a fulltime position with limited time available for other interests and studies. However, the board gets to be a part of decision-making at the highest level and a part of an unforgettable year in general. The duties of KY Board include running the on-going operations at KY and dealing with matters related to studies, career and free time of KY members. The board represents KY at various events, groups and meetings, and takes care that the voice of the students is heard at both university and national level. To achieve all this, the board is supported by KY’s employees as well as several committees, project teams and other volunteers. Each board member has specific duties depending on their role and portfolio of responsibilities. Our Chairman Kari Karttunen divides his time between general leadership, management tasks and representing KY. He is also involved in individual projects by leading two of the new Strategic Initiative task forces. Our Vice Chairman Eeva Lauritsalo oversees the new student center project and is in charge of finance, as well as supporting the work of the chairman and the board. You can read more about the rest of the board on the following pages. Even though the board has great responsibilities and works full-time, the members are also your fellow Aalto BIZ students – and they’re here for you! Academic Affairs The Academic Affairs sector ensures that the education we business students receive is at the level it should be in our world-class university. KY’s academic affairs work concentrates on acting as the voice of the business students of Aalto University in both school and national level discussions. The advocacy work focuses on improving the quality and appreciation of education by active participation and collaboration with the School of Business and AYY. Two board members, Ella Oksala and Marko Laakso, are in charge of KY’s academic and educational affairs but the work is not done solely by two people. Academic Affairs Committee KOVA, subject clubs and student representatives of the administration, hallopeds, all participate in student advocacy. KY’s Academic Affairs sector handles also campus affairs which focus on developing the learning spaces of the business students on all three campuses. This year campus affairs have concentrated on preparations for the move as the Töölö campus of the School of Business will relocate entirely to Otaniemi in the beginning of 2019. After the move our school operates on two campuses, Otaniemi and Mikkeli.
BUT HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED AS A FRESH MURSU? Some basic courses have seen changes this year and thus giving feedback about these courses and studies is more important than before. We strongly emphasize the importance of answering the course feedback form, commenting courses on Fringe Study Guide and sending KY’s Academic Affairs sector questions, ideas and feedback about studies. Communications KY’s communications looks like its members. KY is present on social media 24/7, because we want to make sure we are with our members all the time, and that they are in the loop of what is happening at KY. The best thing about KY’s Communications sector is that it concerns everything and everyone at KY. You always have to communicate, no matter what you do. That is why our board member Elettra Virtanen and the PR & Press Officer Nina Pitkänen are always aware of what is happening at KY. They make sure you get the latest information about everything. Every Monday, you will get a newsletter gathering together all the upcoming events and current topics of KY. In addition KY is active on Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat. Find our social media accounts on page 9 and make sure to follow them all! KY’s communications sector is a vibrant group of people and volunteers. KY’s own Art Director Annukka Laine makes sure KY looks good both on digital and traditional media. Her days are filled with various projects ranging from event visualisations to whole publications like this KY Guide. The Editorin-Chief Lasse Kaartinen runs everything related to our very own student magazine Kylteri and works
tightly together with our AD and the rest of the editorial staff. Read more about Kylteri on page 42. Through communication we want to ensure that KY is close to its members. Transparency is something we strive for, which is why we hold Q&A sessions with our Chairman, introduce KY’s daily life on social media and ask our members’ opinions whenever we can. Community Every KY member is a part of our community. Community sector is the biggest and the brightest consisting of culture, new students and student wellbeing. This sector is also responsible for supporting and thanking our volunteers including clubs, project teams, sub-committees and your tutors. CULTURE KY’s cultural sector treasures our most beloved traditions by overseeing events from the Annual Ball and Wappu to kuntis parties and lauluilta dinners. This dynamic sector is run by KY Board member Anna Halsas and the Secretary for Cultural Affairs, Nora Jarner. A significant amount of time is allocated to supporting our volunteers, especially our three subcommittees, KUJ, NESU-KY and KY-Sub. Anna also acts as the chair and Nora as the secretary of Cultural Committee KUVA (page 27), the team behind many of KY’s events. KUVA is responsible for spectacles ranging from the legendary Hukkaputki pub crawl to the sparkling Boston Night. In addition to being in charge of KY’s cultural events, the culture sector also works towards building a stronger Aalto community and hence, communicates with other student associations’ cultural actors on a regular basis.
NEW STUDENTS Warmly welcoming the new bachelor, master and exchange students to KY and Aalto is a crucial part of building the KY community and passing the traditions on to the new generations of KY members. This sector ensures that your student life gets a smooth start by designating a trained tutor to you, organizing orientation week and cooperating with School of Business. This sector is run by Tiina Hahto, the Tutor Coordinator at School of Business and chair of Tutor Committee (page 29), and Anna Halsas, KY Board member responsible for new students. The Tutor Committee and tutors have a big responsibility in welcoming our new students. However, it’s important to remember that all of KY’s volunteers and members
are involved in taking in the new members of our community!
CLUBS KY is the home for around 60 clubs and Iiris Savolainen, the Secretary for Clubs and Societies, ensures they get all the support and guidance they need. Golf club, skiing club or aviation club… Just name it and most likely we have it! But if you feel like something is missing or have an awesome new concept you want to try out, you are more than welcome to start a project or a club of your own. Remember, you can always consult Iiris regarding these questions.
STUDENT WELLBEING KY Board member Emilia Eräpolku together with the Secretary for Clubs and Societies, Iiris Savolainen, ensure that students feel good both mentally and physically amid all the academic responsibilities and cultural activities. The Sports and Wellbeing Committee LiHy (page 28) and KY’s sports tutors EnerKY regularly organize events to take care of your body and mind, ranging from university-wide Aalto City Challenge and traditional rowing competition between KY and Pykälä to trying out different sports with EnerKY. This sector is also constantly working on finding new and better ways to support the wellbeing and stress management of KY members so that the student life doesn’t get all too exhausting. KY wants to provide a safe and equal environment for its members and thus we don’t tolerate any inappropriate behavior in our community. We want to make every single one of our members feel welcomed in the community!

Corporate Relations Academic education offers us skills and qualification for our upcoming career. But the meaning of working experience gained through summer jobs or working part-time while studying can’t be shunned away. KY and its partners are here to help you with getting that experience! KY Board member Iiro Halinen, Sales Coordinator Rasmus Mäkinen and KY’s very own Sales Academy (page 29) are responsible for corporate relations as well as work and career related issues. These people are in charge of organizing KY’s career events, such as company excursions and Sales Night. In addition, our volunteers in subcommittees, subject clubs, project teams and clubs do cooperation with companies. They also attend Round Table meetings chaired by Iiro to bounce around ideas and get trained to do corporate relations. Connecting students to the working life happens with the help of our partners. By attending our events and following KY on social media, you are able to see what your future employees are really made of, and what kinds of opportunities they have to offer you. We want to ensure that you don’t have to choose your employer based on rumors you heard
during lecture breaks. We encourage you to approach representatives of different companies whenever you get a chance. KY is actively doing research on our members’ career related preferences. If you are interested in an international career, a certain industry or a company with a groundbreaking new product, let us know and we try to find a company into our portfolio that ticks these boxes. Good employees are a valuable asset for companies. This is why companies want to be present in the students’ life already in the beginning of their studies and also give support to the KY community as a whole. KY Foundation KY Foundation helps students achieve their professional, study-related and extracurricular goals at the Aalto University School of Business.
The purpose of KY Foundation is to support, for example, the leisure activities, culture and sports events, internationality and study success of the business students at Aalto University. By providing financial support and other resources for students and associations, KY Foundation helps Aalto business students grow and aim higher.
In addition to free premises, KY Foundation provides Aalto business students with free legal services. The legal advisor Matti Marttunen can be found in KY Building every Thursday from 16.00 to 18.00 (time and date subject to changes), and provides free counseling to all KY members and associations. The independent Kylteri magazine (kylteri.fi and page 42) is also published by the foundation.
750 000€ OF GRANTS AWARDED ANNUALLY
STUDENT-LED DECISION MAKING
KY Foundation offers yearly grants and subsidies to the students. Money is currently given out to clubs and associations providing services or events to the community, groups of students with a good idea for a new project and exchange students going abroad. Roughly 750 000€ is given out yearly! The grant portfolio is being continuously developed, and latest information of current subsidies can be found at KY’s webpages. All application forms, subsidy requirements and topical news are also posted on the website.
Decision making and operation at KY Foundation is led by the executive board and its chairman Joona Orpana. The board consists of a student majority and specialist members of asset and real estate management, who make sure the foundation’s possessions are governed in the best possible way. To keep the students’ best interest at heart, the board is overseen by a supervisory board consisting of the KY’s Representative Council members (see page 40). Day-to-day operations run through Managing Director Juho Paavola.

KY Foundation provides students and KY’s associations with free space to operate and organize events in. The seven-story KY Building in Kamppi, Helsinki forms a cornerstone in KY’s history and has been in active use since its completion in 1941. Located on Pohjoinen Rautatiekatu, the basement and third floor of the building host various meetings and parties throughout the year. On the Otaniemi campus, the main KY Office Espilä and the party venue Saha stand on opposite sides of Konemiehentie, providing KY members and associations with space for different purposes. Whether organizing larger meetings, parties or chilling with coffee, these buildings provide business students with the space they need.

What do people mean when they’re talking about ‘kuntis’? Where can I find a place called ‘Espilä’? KY life is wonderful, but at times the colourful language can be confusing. To start things off a bit more smoothly we made you a little KY vocabulary. A28 A student dormitory located in Etu-Töölö on Arkadiankatu 28, right next to the School of Business. Aalto BIZ The official abbreviation of Aalto University School of Business. Alakertsi The basement party space of KY Building. Afterparties and sitsi parties are often held here. Alvari A student caféteria in the Undergraduate Center (Otakaari 1) in Otaniemi. Also Alvarinaukio, the name of the main square in Otaniemi located next to the Undergraduate Centre. Appro Pub crawl. Arkadia One of the buildings of Aalto BIZ in Töölö. Departments of Marketing, Management and International Business can be found here until the end of 2018. ARTSilainen ARTS student. Avokonttori ‘Avo’. The open office of KY, situated in Espilä. Here you can find the service secretary on call. AYY Aalto University Student Union. The student union of all the students at Aalto University. More on page 20. B.Sc. KTK. An abbreviation used for Bachelor’s degree.
BAD A space for subject clubs, located at KY Building. BIZ 3.0 The project of building new premises for the School of Business in Otaniemi. The building is located in the epicenter of the Otaniemi campus, Maarintie 13, and will be the new home for the business students beginning from 2019. Career Evening Urailta. An evening including meeting company representatives, hearing about career opportunities and information about working life. Usually organized by a subject club. Chydenia One of the buildings of Aalto BIZ in Töölö. Departments of Finance, Accounting and Information and Service Economy can be found here until the end of 2018. Club An association registered under KY. Clubs are self-governing, but supported by KY. Find some of them on pages 31-37. Committee Organs functioning directly under KY and chaired by its board members. KY has six committees that organize diverse cultural and sports events, look after student advocacy and develop cooperation with our corporate partners. See more on pages 26-29. Dipoli Dipoli is Aalto University's main building. Dipoli offers the entire Aalto community and its stakeholders meeting places and work spaces as well as event and exhibition facilities. The building houses also several cafeterias and restaurants that are open to all.

A grant delivered by KY Foundation in order to help you economically during your exchange studies abroad. Can be applied for in April–May.
Kiljukaula KY’s very own song book. Used particularly at lauluilta parties. KOPO Nickname for academic affairs. Derives from the word ‘koulutuspolitiikka’. Kuntis Derives from the word ‘kuntailta’. Kuntis is a party organized for KY members in a bar. When marked ‘avec’ you can bring along a friend who is not a KY member. Read more on page 16. KY Building KY-talo. KY’s heart in Töölö, located on Pohjoinen Rautatiekatu 21 B. There are two party venues in the building: Yläkertsi on the 3rd floor and Alakertsi in the basement. KY Corner A break room for all business students, conveniently located on the first floor of the U-wing in the Undergraduate Centre. KY Executive Board / KYH KY Board. AYY’s rentable space at Jämeräntaival 7 that has two saunas, one small event space, a grill and an old-fashioned wooden bathing tub. You can also go swimming in the sea at the dock in front. Ruusula AYY’s student dormitory in Taka-Töölö. The nickname derives from the address Ruusulankatu 5. Saha KY’s own event space on Konemiehentie 1, the home of parties and KY activities in Otaniemi.
Sitsi party Sitsit. A party at which you sing, eat and drink. Close to a lauluilta, but with its own rules and traditions. Often organized by NESU-KY. Smökki Servin mökki. AYY’s event space where some of the bigger parties in Otaniemi are held. Speksi A student-run interactive musical. Many student associations have their own speksi, including KY. See more on page 35. Subcommittee Jaosto. There are three subcommittees at KY: KUJ, KY-SUB and NESU-KY, each having a special function at KY. For more information, turn to page 25. Subject club Subject clubs represent the variety of subjects taught at Aalto University School of Business. TOKYO Student Association TOKYO is a student organization which aims to bring together students of Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture as well as its former students, the alumni. The nickname derives from the address Vaasankatu 10. Vujut Abbreviation for ‘vuosijuhla’. The Annual Ball, that celebrates KY’s birthday party where men wear a tailcoat or a dark suit and women an evening gown. The ball is held on the Saturday closest to Antti Chydenius’ birthday, February 26th. Väre Väre will be the home to the Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture. The building will also house the Metro Centre with shops and services. Väre is located right next to BIZ 3.0. WebOodi A course portal at oodi.aalto.fi, through which students enroll to courses and can find information about their study performance. Yläkertsi Officially ‘Iso Puoli’. An event space on the 3rd floor of KY Building. YTHS Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS). A health care service tailor-made for university students.
