Mursu, welcome to KY! You made it! Getting accepted to the Aalto University School of Business has been a dream of many applicants but you are the one whose dream was fulfilled. Getting accepted to the nation’s best business school is a great achievement but the biggest journey of your life is only starting – welcome to the best student community this country has to offer! Traditionally, the first-year students in our business school are called “mursus” instead of “fuksis”. Be proud of this title because you’ve used a lot of your time to earn it and not everyone is entitled to it. Aalto University Business Students, familiarly known as KY, is the organization and community for business students at Aalto University. KY was founded in 1911, so we have been a home for motivated and capable future game-changers for over 108 years. Here at KY, you can truly spread your wings and make your wildest dreams come true. We built Amer-Tupakka, were founding the first Finnish commercial radio station, Radio City, and we even sailed a ship packed full of Finnish export products to London. Today KY’s services can be summarized into three categories: community, student advocacy and work & career. In the community sector, we aim to provide our students the best student experience they can have with our resources and wide range of events. Our event offering includes traditional student parties, sports events and interdisciplinary activities with the whole Aalto community. In addition, KY has a wide range of
2
clubs, subject clubs, committees and subcommittees which members can join. In student advocacy, we make sure that our students’ voices are heard in the decision making bodies both in the School of Business and on the national level. We have a good relationship with the school and thus our opinions are truly heard on the educational matters, making sure you will have the best possible learning experience. Our work & career sector enables you opportunities to participate in career related events, excursions, gives you members-only benefits and showcases a variety of different career paths. The job of your dreams waits just around the corner! But how will you transform these possibilities into making your student life experience the best possible? I encourage you to keep an open mind, get out of your comfort zone, try new things and get involved. KY is a community where every student can feel welcomed, find like-minded people and exceed themselves. Life as a student is fun and full of possibilities – you never know what kind of adventure awaits around the corner! With all my heart, I welcome you to study here at Aalto University School of Business and encourage you to get involved in KY activities. See you in autumn!

Welcome to KY!
KY’s history in a nutshell 1910’s: KY’s first steps The Helsinki School of Economics Student Association (Kauppakorkeakoulun Oppilasyhdistys) was founded on October 7th, 1911 as a student association for the first Finnish-speaking university-level business school. During its first years, the union had only around 70 members and limited financial resources. KY’s flag, student ribbon and emblem all date back to the start of the student union, and are still used to this day.
1920’s: Partying despite the prohibition
1940’s: KY Building is completed During World War II, the school’s doors were open infrequently. Even though the war had slowed down the construction project, KY Building was finished in February 1940 and soon after 42 lucky KY members got to move into the top floors. The war also wasn’t enough to cancel KY’s traditional events like Annual Ball, Mursujaiset and Wappu.
1950’s: To top off, smoke a Boston!
In 1923, the name of the association was changed – Helsinki School of Economics Student Union (KY) was founded. The prohibition of alcohol created its own set of challenges for KY’s active cultural sector, but thanks to clever students, one did not have to merely sip lemonade at parties. In 1927, the student union received its first own space but the dream of an own house had started to develop in the students’ minds.
After the war, it was time to focus on rebuilding the society and economy. KY made its first achievement in commercial entrepreneurship by founding the tobacco corporation Amer-Tupakka Oy in 1950, and thanks to cunning marketing, Amer’s Boston cigarettes quickly grew to be a widely popular brand. Also activity in clubs started to show signs of life and KY’s sports club was in its golden age KY often being unbeatable in academic leagues.
1930’s: KY Building in the horizon
1960’s: The decade of Finnfocus and television
Financing an own building was a long process. Several fundraisers were organized, with a raffle being the tip of the iceberg. At times the depression drove the entire construction project into a difficult
8
situation, but will power, hard work and a pinch of luck finally led to success and construction planning began in 1939.
The huge export trade show, Finnfocus, held in London in 1968 is the
Welcome to KY!
biggest event in KY history. KY rented M/S Finnpartner from Amer, and the ship sailed to London to promote Finland and Finnish companies internationally. The project was a bold and risky investment, which ended up creating a lot of positive publicity. During the 60’s, KY was also active in the TV business: KY was a shareholder in Tesvisio, the company behind the first commercial TV channel in Finland. Student numbers increased quickly at the beginning of the 1960’s leading to growing housing challenges. KY’s solution was to start building student housing on Ruusulankatu in Töölö and on Vaasankatu in Kallio.
1970’s: Turning KY Building into office space Student union activities became all the more political in the 70’s. Political battles and, as a result, frequent changes in the KY Board depict the time at KY. A hot topic was the fate of the KY Building – should existing student housing be kept or should the building’s financial potential be better utilized? After a long debate, KY finally decided to change the building’s dormitory into office space.
1980’s: From pinstripes to overalls and politics to partying The student union’s activity wasn’t as political in the 1980’s as in the previous decades. In the 80’s, KY members partied at the student union’s own restaurants – one of the most popular nightclubs of the time, KY-Exit, was located in the KY Building. The use of overalls became more common as student life came closer to what it is today. In the whirlwind of the casino economy, KY began to diversify its stock holdings and professionals were hired to lead KY-owned companies through the Ekomen Group. KY was also active outside the student union, and the media
diligently followed KY’s affairs. KY continued searching for its limits and offered financing for creating a new radio channel, Radio City.
1990’s: Emerging from depression The deep depression in Finland at the beginning of the decade severely affected KY. The Ekomen Group declared bankruptcy in 1992 and KY struggled with grave financial difficulties. To balance its finances, KY sold its stock holdings in Amer. The representative council’s meeting leading to the decision was followed by the national news.
2000’s: KY in the new millennium Increasing the service level was a major focus point of the first decade in the new millennium. In this spirit, KY created a fund for international exchange to support the students in their traveling expenses. In addition, the apartment offering kept on expanding when new apartment buildings were finished in Arabianranta in 2006 and on Arkadiankatu in 2009.
2010’s: KY as an association As Aalto University and Aalto University Student Union were founded, KY’s status as a student union was retracted. KY as an association started its operations on the first of January 2010, and during the first years, KY searched for its place in the new union and looked for new directions. During the same year, KY Foundation begun operating to provide financial support and other resources for students and associations. In 2015, after more than 100 years in Töölö and 75 years in the KY Building, KY expanded to Otaniemi and focused the majority of its activities on Otaniemi campus. To embrace the Aalto community in full, KY changed its official name to Aalto University Business Students in 2016. Check the full KY Story at ky.fi/ky-story!

Welcome to KY!
Events KY Year is filled with various events – there definitely is something for everyone! Here are some of the highlights of the year gathered. During Mursu Expo, you will hear more about these and many more. Remember also to join KY Events on Facebook to stay updated.
Orientation week and Mursujaiset
Info evenings
Orientation week is not only about adapting to the academic world, but also getting to know KY and Aalto, their associations and what they can offer. This includes events ranging from getting to know our community through Otasuunnistus and Aalto Party to getting to know your fellow mursus at Mursu Party or at Meet Your Masters, if you are an incoming Master’s student. KY, as well as the orientation week, is not only about the boozy nights. To ensure this, KY’s Sports and Wellbeing Committee LiHy organizes a playful sports event, Mursu Championships, where tutor groups compete against each other and which is one of the many places where you can get to know KY’s sports associations. At Mursu Expo, in the end of the week, you will get a chance to find out more about KY’s clubs, subcommittees, committees, subject clubs and everything else KY has to offer. Get to know the actors beforehand by reading this Guide! One highlight of autumn, and your KY years, is Mursujaiset. The 24-hour experience is an academic baptism for all new BIZ students, but we won’t reveal too much beforehand! Save the date, 12.9. (and maybe the day after), because this is something you do not want to miss.
The weeks following orientation are filled with info evenings organised by various associations of KY. All three subcommittees and many of our clubs have one, so if you are intrigued of joining one, or just solely want to get to know the actors better, we suggest you attend. In the info evenings, you will be told more about what the association does, will get to know the people in it and will be able to ask questions. They are also a great way to get to know fellow mursus better!

Autumn Hike As said before, KY has something for everyone. Surprisingly, many Kylteris are enthusiastic outdoors people, and for them, we have for example Sports and Wellbeing Committee’s Autumn Hike that is organized every year. This year, the hikers are heading to the beautiful northern Finland. Even though the tickets are already sold out, get in touch with the Sports and Wellbeing Committee in case any cancellation places have opened. Also, keep you eyes open for all of the other outdoorsy opportunities we have here at KY!
Autumn Festival The highlight of October, and the week you get to take your brand new overalls out for a stroll for the first time, is the Autumn Festival. The Festival begins with the traditional pub crawl III-kierros which is followed by the glamorous Boston Night and Masters’ Night, which are held simultaneously. The week culminates in the legendary Sillis, which truly is something extraordinary.
Feel Good Weeks Even though feeling good should be a constant state of mind, we here at KY want to put extra emphasis on it during twice a year organised Feel Good Weeks. Mindfulness, cooking classes or training advice are just some of the opportunities during the weeks, and the program of the weeks vary. These opportunities are planned to balance your life between studies, relieve some stress and to give you inspiration for trying out these activities during regular weeks also.
Summer Job Night Looking for a summer job? If so, Summer Job Night is a must for you. KY has teamed up with companies that want you to be their next summer intern, and Summer Job Night is organised to connect you with them. Summer Job Night is nothing like a traditional career fair; it is an useful kickstart for you to land your dream summer job. The event will help you to get your application game on point, and offers you a genuine possibility to interact with recruiters – you might even end up with a job interview offer as a result.
KY Week

The most amazing week of the year takes place in the early spring when it’s time to celebrate KY’s birthday! Next year we celebrate our 109-year journey with elegant festivities. The week kicks off with a Formal dressing and smooth party behaviour class, goes onto the Annual Ball sitsi party and as the highlight is the Annual Ball. Of course the celebration doesn’t end there, but the ever so adventurous Sillis makes sure we get to celebrate our beloved KY day and night.
Wappu Wappu; Student’s Christmas, New Year’s Eve and birthday all wrapped into one. KY Wappu is filled with various events throughout the weeks before the actual highlight. Wappu Eve is full of spectacular events and KY arrives with style in a Wappu parade to watch Havis Amanda get its graduation cap. The celebration culminates in KY’s Wappukuntis at Kaivohuone. After a night of partying, why should you stop there? The morning after, student’s head to Ullis to enjoy the celebration with friends, and sparkling refreshments flow all day long.
Have You Met Suvi An amazing school year requires a banger ending, and what could be better than gathering with our friends from Pykälä, Prodeko and LKS

to celebrate the beginning of the summer. You never know what to expect from this event, but you know for sure that it won’t leave you longing for more. This is just one of the events that KY organises with other student organisations, so you for sure will have the opportunity to get to know people from all around.
Kuntis parties Kuntis parties are organised at Helsinki’s best night clubs, and the entrance is usually free of charge. At a Kuntis, you can mingle with your fellow students, enjoy student priced drinks and listen to live music. After a few special Kuntis parties, there is an after party at the KY Building, and the party doesn’t stop until the sun rises!
Lauluilta and sitsi parties Lauluilta is a dinner party with long traditions. During these nights, traditional songs from KY’s own songbook, Kiljukaula, are sung and usually a three course dinner with wines and snaps is enjoyed. A lauluilta is one of the best ways to get to know more about traditions and roots of KY, so remember to join us to Harkkalauluilta in February! At KY, sitsi culture lives strong as well. Sitsi parties are quite close to lauluiltas, but with their own traditions and manners. For instance, people usually wear overalls at sitsis, but dress a bit fancier to lauluilta.
Company excursions KY organizes numerous excursions during the academic year. Make sure to join them as they are a great way to meet the company representatives in person and to ask them about the possibilities they have to offer. Excursions are a great way to make a good first impression on your future employer!
Pub crawls KY organises two pub crawls annually – one in October during Autumn Festival and one in April. III-kierros takes place along the routes of trams number 2 and 3 and the legendary Hukkaputki introduces students to the metro tunnels of East Helsinki. In addition, there are organised rides to various pub crawls around Finland.

Welcome to KY!
Probba Probba is the student association of Aalto University School of Business, Mikkeli Campus. 30 years ago, Probba was founded along with the BBA-program in the Mikkeli Campus. Some years later, in 2000 the program changed to BScBA, but the students still are called BABAs today. Probba is part of KY as well as AYY. All the students, which we have roughly 200 on our campus, are majoring in International Business and Business Administration. The BScBA program in Mikkeli is the only Bachelor’s program done completely in English in Finland in addition to the new Economics program in Otaniemi campus. After the two-year studies in Mikkeli, the final semester is done as an exchange abroad in one of our partner universities all over the world. After completing the BScBA program, our students can continue directly to Aalto University’s Masters programs in Otaniemi. It is a special program in many ways as the international environment and incredibly tight community brings people from all over the world together. Professors in the program come from all over the world and stay in Mikkeli for the time of the module. Studies are intense as the courses are taken in three-week long modules, which at times are tough and demanding. Luckily, the community of BABAs knows very well the art of balancing out the hard work they have done. Our community has tons of student clubs that arrange events for our students. There is something for everyone to be part of, as there are various clubs ranging from beer enthusiast to board games club. Those who thought before coming here that such a small town might be a boring place to study, were proven wrong very quickly. We always have something going on, whether it’s Monday night floorball, sitsi parties or food feast.
The community is very strong as every year only under 100 students begin their studies in Mikkeli Campus and each year they create a new family. The values and traditions from older generations pass on to the new ones and there are many things that have not changed in decades that BABAs have went through. The family from Mikkeli stays for life with many who have studied here. It says something about us that our alumni are known as “Mikkeli Mafia”, because of the tight network that stays between the BABAs to the working life. BABAs can be found from many of the KY events happening in Helsinki. You can recognize BABAs in events from the loud singing of our songs and chants. We also wear the same dollar green overalls as KY but every BABA has a big round badge on their left thigh, indicating the survival of BABA freshmen orientation week’s Running BABA event. Even though we are a few hours’ drive away from KY Building, Alakertsi is a familiar place to many of our students. We also welcome all new Mursus to our events, especially Mikkeli Road Trip which will be in the beginning of next year! Probba wishes all the Kylteri freshmen an unforgettable time at your studies, we hope to meet you soon! If you want to know more about us check out our webpage at probba.org, and to see what is going on in Mikkeli, make sure you follow our Instagram @probbary and Snapchat @probba89 !

Student housing AYY owns approximately 2,600 student apartments in Helsinki and Espoo. Members of AYY are entitled to apply for AYY housing. You can apply for an apartment as soon as you receive confirmation of receiving a study place at the university. There is also a so-called first-year extra application point that can be received when applying for shared apartments. To receive it, you must apply for an apartment by the end of July or December, depending on the starting date of your studies. Search and apply for apartments through the Domo system: domo.ayy.fi. Students can also apply for an apartment from the Foundation for Student Housing in the Helsinki region (HOAS).
Healthcare FSHS (or YTHS), the Finnish Student Health Service, oversees the health of university students. You can receive help from FSHS in matters of general health, oral health and mental health. FSHS is a
very affordable high-quality health care system created specifically for students. The majority of the FSHS services are free of charge, and even the highest appointment fees are very reasonable. Further information: yths.fi N.B. There is no emergency care in FSHS. EU/EEA students should still apply for a European Health Insurance Card and non-EU/ EEA students need to have a private health insurance required by the residence permit.
Associations and student culture Taking part in dozens of activities every year is an essential part of studying in Finland. Make sure you won’t miss the highlights of the year, such as Wappu festivities, anniversary balls, Shrove Tuesday sledging and many others. The 200+ associations operating within AYY include everything ranging from sports and music to games and other hobbies. New Aalto students are more than welcome to join the associations. Keep an eye out for them and get to know them in the upcoming events!
Student advocacy AYY also represents students in different decision-making bodies of the university, and promotes their interests in society. Through student representatives, selected by AYY, students influence the decisions made at the University. The Representative Council is the highest decision-making body of AYY. It is elected in a ballot, in which all members of AYY can vote and run as candidates. The next elections are this autumn 2019!
Other services AYY offers and provides its members various kinds of services and opportunities, from yearly calendars and student advocacy to amazing volunteering options. AYY members can rent AYY’s sauna and festive premises for gatherings with friends, for example. AYY also has a van which the student union members can rent.

The Guild was founded in 1908. However, it is rather known for its creative mindset than conservative traditions. Among the most important missions of the Guild are advocating the students interests and organizing a myriad of events from sports events to theatre visits and wine and cheese evenings to sitsi parties. You can recognise our members from broken white overalls at Wappu, and during other times from dark clothes or striped shirts.
Automaatio- ja systeemitekniikan kilta The Guild of Automation and Systems Technology (AS) gathers the students of Automation and Information Technology at Otaniemi together. The 20-year-old Guild has just passed teenage years but is still one of the biggest Guilds in Otaniemi thanks to the new Bachelor’s programme in English. You may recognise AS guild members from violet overalls with black sleeve, good spirit and from a pinch of madness from which for example a robot arm pouring sparkling wine was born.
Fyysikkokilta The Guild of Physics was founded in 1947 and currently has around 500 members consisting mainly from Engineering Physics and Mathematics programme’s students. This year students from Quantum Technologies Bachelor’s programme will join us for the first time. The most common place to bump into our guild members is at the halls of the Undergraduate Centre where also our home base, our guild room, is. In events, you can recognise members of the guild from natural white overalls with a letter Phi shaped logo in the back.

The people graduating from the study programme are interdisciplinary multi talents willing to learn more and who can solve complex problems of information society and cooperate in the working life. The studies emphasize group works and problem-oriented learning. The studies are strongly in connection to working life and

Inkubio Inkubio is the guild for bioinformation technology students in Aalto University. You may recognise inkubites from red-brown overalls with self-made cow patches. The atmosphere in our guild is warm and all new members are welcomed. Our important values are ecology, tolerance and community. The guild arranges all kinds of activities for its members in the areas of culture, sports, working life and, also, partying. Last year we arranged a whopping 82 events. A good place to bump into inkubites is in our guild room which is like another home for many of us.
Kemistikilta The history of the Chemistry Guild begins from 1891 making it the oldest guild in Aalto University. The Guild’s symbol is a white neon atom on a blue background. The Chemistry Guild brings together students interested in chemistry, biochemistry and process technology. You may recognize the Guild members from red sleeve with neon atom on our overalls and from the slogan “saa juottaa”. The easiest way to find Chemistry Guild members is to go to the guild room where games of corona, marjapussi and pärkkä are played and Guild magazine Tisle is read.
Koneinsinöörikilta The Guild of Mechanical Engineers, Koneinsinöörikilta or KIK, is a student organization for the mechanical and energy engineering students at Aalto University founded in 1915. Any member of AYY can join the guild. KIK is managed by a board and a large number of officials which are chosen at the end of every year, and any member of the guild is welcome to apply. You can recognise the guild members from their piggy pink overalls and mascot tractor Tela-Veera, and from their joyful “Yy, kaa, KO, NE!” shouts.

Diverse activities are at the heart of KY. Without various sorts of activities arranged by KY’s volunteers, there would be no KY at all – and without newcomers like you, KY would have no future. Subcommittees KY has three subcommittees, each of them organizing unforgettable parties and other events. In addition to making student life more fun for KY members, the subcommittees usually have their own traditions and a lot of fun of their own. Many former members of KUJ, NESU-KY and KY-SUB look back at their subcommittee years with great fondness and remain friends with each other for the rest of their lives.
KUJ
KY-Sub
KUJ, more formally Kulttuurijaosto, is the Cultural Subcommittee of KY. For decades, KUJ has ensured that the students of KY get their fair share of parties and events – and will continue to do so for many years to come. The most visible events KUJ arranges include parties like Sillis, Club Lagoon (the largest student club party in Helsinki) and KY’s official entrance exam party. In September, KUJ will welcome you to the student community at Mursujaiset, a 24-hour ordeal for new students, for which you should already brace yourself. You can spot members of KUJ by the furry collars on their overalls. KUJ forms a tight-knit community, and former members of the board are often active even years after graduation. As a member of KUJ, you become a part of something much larger than just student life – you’ll find yourself at the heart of student culture. The door is open once and only once, so mursu, choose wisely. You can find more information at kuj.fi, or by following KUJ on Facebook @KUJry.
KY-Sub, KY’s International Subcommittee, is the youngest and liveliest subcommittee on a mission to integrate exchange and international students to the Finnish student culture. Our all-inclusive events range from crazy theme parties (St. Patrick’s Party, sitsit) to more laid-back hangouts (Welcome & Farewell Evenings, sewing overall badges), but we also have events aimed at specific groups of students, such as the memorable Lapland and St. Petersburg trips for exchange students, and the wild Mursulaiva for all mursus! Whether you are aiming to build an international career and want to improve your personal skills, or simply wish to meet new people and have friends in all places, KY-Sub is the place to be! By joining Sub, you are part of a loving family, which provides you support and connections all over the world, long-lasting and close friendships, along with many internal events. For more info, either ask a Sub member (you can recognize us from the flag ribbon on the side of our overalls), or check out our Facebook page @KYSub & Instagram @ky_sub!
NESU-KY NESU-KY, Nordic Economics Students’ Union at KY, is the largest subcommittee of KY, and its primary function is to unite Nordic Business Students. Therefore, NESU-KY belongs to a larger organization NESU which consists of different Business Schools’ NESU organizations. At KY, NESU-KY is in response of organizing many traditional events, such as Wapputerassi and Vuosijuhlasitsit. NESU-KY mainly organizes sitsi parties. However, NESU-KY also collaborates with multiple companies and organizes excursions and career events. In addition to these events, NESU-KY members get to take part in conferences and cottage trips. New members are welcomed to NESU-KY every autumn. By joining NESU-KY, one gets a chance to build lifelong friendships, and after a year at NESU-KY, one will stay as a member of the community. NESU-KY’s members can be recognized from their colorful shirts and NESU-letters on their overalls, and they are extremely willing to talk about their own experiences of NESU. More information of NESU-KY can be found on Instagram @NESU_KY or on Facebook @NESUKY.

Task Forces and Committees Task Forces supervise the four strategic key projects of KY. The general goal of the Task Forces is to bring continuity and offer expertise for each initiative. Task Force members are chosen for one year with an option to continue for another year. Task Force meetings are held roughly once a month throughout the year. The chairs of the Task Forces are KY Board members or members with previous experience on the subject matter. New members for the Task Forces will be chosen around New Year. KY has also project committees that work on a specific matter. The Annual Ball Committee is recruited each year in the autumn and TEKNISTĂ„ is a more stable committee with less changes but open to new members.
Digital KY Digital KY Task Force brainstorms different ideas regarding digitalization at KY. These ideas might be everything from a shareable event calendar to digital locks in the upcoming student centre. The execution is overseen by the board member responsible for Digital KY, and the Task Force is there to advise the board member. The Task Force meets few times a year and communicates mainly via social media.

The Task Force members are students and alumni who are proficient at digital matters. The current members are the board member responsible for Digital KY, Chairman of the KY Board, IT Coordinator and 5 recruited members.

and strategically sound way? The main focus of this Task Force is finding cost savings regarding our biggest expense, personnel costs, while making sure enough funds are allocated to strategic initiatives and KY associations’ subsidies. The goal of the Task Force is to make decisions keeping an eye on the Student Center, discover ways to lower expenses inside KY and its functions, oversee KY’s budget regarding subsidies for KY’s associations, assure continued funding for strategic initiatives and discover cost reductions in personnel costs. The Task Force consists of Chairman of the KY Board, one KY Board member, Executive Director and 2–6 recruited members.
New Premises What will be the home for business students for the next 100 years? Building a new home for our members in Otaniemi is the single biggest task facing KY in the following years. Meanwhile the conversion of the KY Building into student housing is advanced, with the aim that the building stays under KY’s ownership. The goal of this Task Force is to act as the steering group of the New Premises project on behalf of KY, oversee and advance the design and construction of the new premises and make and approve operational decisions regarding the project. The Task Force consists of the Chairman of the KY Board, Vice Chairman of the KY Board, Chairman of the KY Foundation, Executive Director and 1–5 recruited members. Members of the Task Force should have been strongly participating in the project in the past or have experience in the real estate business.
Societal Impact KY wants to position itself as an opinion leader in Finland when it comes to educational policy regarding business studies. Tracking our brand’s performance and partnering with the school, experts and companies like aTalent will make it possible to become a fearless straight-talker, who is seen and heard. By examining the use of communications agencies, we will build strong ties to the business
media. The goal for the Societal Impact Task Force is to manage KY’s external brand and make it better, influence education policy and implement projects of large scale. Task Force has 3–7 members including the Chairman of the KY Board and one member of the KY Board.
Annual Ball Committee KY’s Annual Ball is the single most glamorous event of the year and the highlight of the Annual Ball week held between the end of February and the beginning of March. This traditional event cherishes KY’s centennial history and celebrates our strong community. In 2019 the event was held at Clarion Hotel Helsinki where we celebrated KY’s 108th birthday with a sophisticated dinner, fabulous programme and a ball. The Annual Ball is organized by the Annual Ball Committee chosen during the autumn, usually around October. The committee is open for everyone regardless of your academic year or KY background. Usually the committee consists of 7–9 members who all have different responsibilities, including one chairman. The duties are for example decorations, corporate relations and communications. Even though the Annual Ball is our most traditional celebration, each committee can make it look like their own!
TEKNISTÄ TEKNISTÄ is KY’s technical background engine. Nothing works without technology nowadays, and this is why TEKNISTÄ exists. The project team is responsible for keeping KY’s hardware and software environments in check, be it an audiovisual installation, website, network environment, building automation or basically anything that needs to be fiddled with. Whenever you use the internet at KY premises, see moving pictures, hear sound or use your digital Mursu passport, TEKNISTÄ is behind them. TEKNISTÄ does things with a can-do attitude, good team spirit, and a healthy dose of low quality humor. We are recruiting in the autumn, stay tuned! See more at teknistä.fi

Aalto Debating Society When ideas clash, that sets up a debate. And debates are what Aalto Debating Society is all about. Our mission is to delve into contentious issues in a positive way. The Representative Council The Representative Council (edustajisto or “edari” in Finnish) is the highest decision-making body of KY. Essentially its purpose is to make sure that KY is acting in the best interest of its members. The Representative Council decides on all major issues of the association, therefore determining what KY is, what it stands for and what KY actually does today and in the years to come. In 2019, the Representative Council has been e.g. planning our future premises, updating regulations and statutes of KY and recruiting one of the most important members of the KY Office, the Executive Director. The Council operates at the very heart of KY, which makes it a great viewpoint to what’s happening in our community! The Representative Council meetings are held usually once a month, either in Otaniemi or Töölö, and the meeting invitation along with materials are posted on KY’s website a week before the meeting. The actual decisions are of course made in the meetings, but they are just the culmination of the council work: a lot of hours go into preparation, discussion and planning as well. Representative Council is not all serious business though: traditional meeting afterworks are a great place to ease off a bit and get to know your fellow Council members, and we occasionally organize some other leisure events as well. The Representative Council is elected every two years: the next Representative Council elections will be held this autumn simultaneously with the election of the Representative Council for our student union, AYY. The current Representative Council was elected

two years ago, and it consists of 21 members and 42 deputy members from all three campuses (Otaniemi, Töölö and Mikkeli). This current two-year term is also historic in a sense that for the first time the Council primarily works in English and we have an international student in the Council. Every KY member has the right to vote in the elections and run to become a member of the Representative Council – this means you as well!
This seems interesting! How can I jump abroad? 1. Come and attend a Representative Coucil meeting - all KY members are welcome! 2. Keep an eye out for upcoming meetings and previous decisions on ky.fi and KY Today. 3. Have a chat with a current Council member to make sure your voice is heard. 4. Run as a candidate, or at least vote, in the next Council election this autumn.
Come along!
KY is coming! It is election time again this autumn! And we need you to run as a candidate or to vote, to ensure that KY will be heard in the deciding student parties of Aalto University. Every vote and candidate counts for the KY spirit. Representative Council Elections are held every two years for both, KY and AYY. The elections are separate but organized at the same time. Both elections are truly important for us and every KY member can run as a candidate and/or vote in both of them. Kylterirengas, which is our group in AYY’s Representative Council, needs all the seats possible in the future. During the next years, AYY’s Representative Council will make decisions for example regarding the Student Centre and our opinions need to be heard. These decisions will have an impact on KY for many years to come, and this is the only way for us to influence. More votes equals more seats and more seats equals more influence. You can find more info about elections in KY’s official website and about the KY’s Representative Council on the previous page. Remember to run as a candidate or, at least, VOTE! The future of KY is made now!

University studies combine freedom and responsibility. Freedom means you can build a timetable of your own, work while studying and concentrate on the courses you find the most interesting. On the other hand, you have to be able to plan your own course combinations and to take the responsibility for your choices. Nonetheless, studying should not be too stressful. When problems occur or any questions arise, you can always trust to find help from the university, your student union AYY or KY. Turn the page to learn more about your future studies!

Studies
Studying at Aalto BIZ Studying at a university is quite different from your past studies: no strict curriculum exists, unless you’ve created one for yourself. Now you have the freedom to choose which courses to attend and how to build your individual timetable! This freedom comes with great responsibility – you have to make sure that you complete all the courses needed for your degree. The time it takes to finish your degree doesn’t depend only on your studying methods and planning, but also on your situation in life. The normative target time for finishing both your Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees is five years altogether, but changing life situations may swing it either way. Working, taking off on an international exchange or starting a family, for instance, may slow down your studies – on the other hand, clear scheduling and goal-oriented attitude could speed up your graduation.
Studying at the School of Business You study at Aalto BIZ (Aalto University School of Business), which is a part of Aalto University. Aalto University was formed in 2010 when three self-governing universities – Helsinki School of Economics, Helsinki University of Technology and the University of Art and Design Helsinki – merged into one. Today, the university consists of six relatively autonomous schools. You’re free to attend courses, or even complete your minor studies, at any of the schools of the university. To make it easier, there are several multidisciplinary programmes available. In addition, Aalto University is continuously striving to improve collaboration between the schools. It is also possible to include an internship in both the Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, for 6 ECTS each. This is a great way to get to know working life! Studying methods used and required during your studies vary between courses and teachers. The most important thing to keep in mind is that the teachers won’t give you ready-made answers, but rather the tools to solve problems. University studies aim at teaching you how to think and how to use the skills you’ve attained – not always at giving exact facts. In addition to lectures, most courses include assignments, teaching in small groups or exercise sessions. Teamwork and case presentations are both very common ways to learn and work, and they will accustom you to working methods needed also later on in your career. Most courses end in an exam, but in many courses the exam isn’t the only point of evaluation – cases and assignments may have a huge weight on your final grade as well.
Questions? Answers! At the beginning of your studies, your tutor will explain everything you need to know about your future studies and student life. Re-

member that you can also always ask your professor if you have any questions in mind. The professors can be contacted via email or face-to-face during their weekly reception hours – just remember to check the times beforehand! More often than not, the professors are quick to answer your questions. Alongside the official study guide and course-specific webpages, empirical information and your fellow students’ takes on courses can be found on the student-operated Fringe Study Guide. The guide is available at ky.fi/voo, and it can be updated by anyone – the guide will become more useful with each given review. Once you have completed a course, please fill in your own review to expand the database! The Fringe Study Guide is located in the Studies section of ky.fi, where you can find other important information as well. Check ky.fi/studies for more!

Bachelor’s degree Your university-level business studies will begin with the Bachelor’s degree. At Aalto BIZ, this lower university degree consists of common core and methodological studies, specialization and minor studies, language studies and elective studies. The Bachelor’s degree consists of 180 ECTS, which is equivalent to three years of studying, by recommendation. At the end of your first year of studies, you will be asked to pick a specialization area chosen from seven options: Accounting, Information & Service Management (ISM), Economics, Finance, Management, Marketing and Business Law. This area of specialization will make up approximately one third of your Bachelor’s degree studies and define the area on which you will write your Bachelor’s thesis – your first step into the world of research and academic writing.
The two-year Master’s degree is worth 120 ECTS and it comprises advanced specialization studies, minor and elective studies and the pro gradu thesis. Pro gradu follows the same principles of academic writing as the Bachelor’s thesis, but it is notably broader. Some students choose to get more familiar with working life while wrapping up their studies – it is possible to conduct your pro gradu research as a commission project for an interesting company. That’s basically getting paid to complete your studies!
Master’s degree The Bachelor’s degree might be a stepping stone into corporate life. However, you should bear in mind that most employers, especially in Finland, prefer or even require their employees to have a Master’s degree to be able to acquire higher positions within the company. For this reason, it is not surprising that most business students opt to continue their studies until having finished both their Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. Many choose to deepen their knowledge in their Bachelor’s specialization area, but it is not uncommon to switch to something entirely different, either. In addition to Aalto BIZ’s Master’s programmes, there are also interdisciplinary Aalto programmes to choose from.

Everyday life of a student It’s easier to enjoy student life when your day-to-day necessities are in order. This section aims to answer the practical questions about housing, income and health care. Fortunately, there is no need to worry. We students are pretty well taken care of – our student union AYY, the social security institution KELA and the Finnish Student Health Service YTHS, amongst others, are here to help us.
Housing
Student financial aid
AYY owns apartments that are rented out to students of Aalto University. However, AYY does not have adequate housing for all Aalto University students, so you should also search for an apartment through other channels. First-year students and students moving from outside the metropolitan area have priority in the housing queue. You can apply for housing as soon as you receive the confirmation of your place of study. A so-called freshman point is available for AYY’s shared apartment queues. In order to receive the freshman point, you must apply for housing no later than in July or December, depending on when your studies begin.
Student financial aid is a social benefit, which consists of three parts: 1. Study grant 2. Housing supplement (students in rental housing) 3. Student loan
Applying for AYY’s housing 1. Get to know the housing section on AYY’s website: ayy.fi/asuminen 2. Carefully read through the application info: ayy.fi/asuminen/asunnonhakijat/hakuinfo 3. Apply for AYY’s housing through Domo system: domo.ayy.fi English sites are also available, just click the flag icon on the upper left corner.
Questions concerning housing are addressed to AYY’s Housing Office: Contact form: ayy.fi/asuminen/kysy Phone number: 050 520 9410 Address: Otakaari 11, 02150 Espoo
Other housing options in the metropolitan area • Foundation for Student Housing in the Helsinki Region, HOAS, is the largest student housing provider in the metropolitan area: hoas.fi • Student nations of the University of Helsinki: osakunta.fi/fi/osakunnat/

In order to receive student financial aid, you must gain at least 5 ECTS per supported month. However, the minimum is 20 ECTS per academic year, regardless of the number of months for which you receive student financial aid. In addition, since student financial aid is a social benefit, the amount of your income has an effect on how many months of student financial aid you are entitled to during the year. Students who begin their academic studies for the first time in 2019 have 30 months of financial aid for completing the lower university degree. When students have completed their Bachelor’s degree and continue to the Master’s degree, they are entitled to 21 additional months of financial aid. However, a student can use no more than 48 financial aid months in total for completing both of the degrees. Further information at kela.fi/opintotuki. In recent years, there have been many changes to the student financial aid, so remember to check and ask if anything is unclear to you! More info can be found from into.aalto.fi (Student life Financial aid).
Monitor your income If you work or get a summer job among studies and earn more than the income limits of student financial aid allows, you need to return the extra financial aid on your own initiative or cancel the aid in advance for the number of months necessary. Read more at kela.fi/opintotuki-omat-tulot. You should avoid using financial aid months ‘unnecessarily’, as you will not get back the months already used, even if you still have studies left. Thus, do not use your financial aid for a sick leave or a holiday! If your sick leave is prolonged, you can apply for sickness allowance. Find more information at kela.fi/sairauspaivaraha_opiskelijalle.

Health and wellbeing Finnish Student Health Service (YTHS) The Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS or YTHS in Finnish) takes care of university students’ health. You can always make an appointment with FSHS when you are in need of health services. AYY’s membership fee includes the insurance-based fee of FSHS. However, if FSHS is closed or you cannot make an appointment, you can always use your own municipal health centre or emergency services. During your first year of studies, you will receive a request to participate in the electronic health survey of FSHS (SÄTKY) which is designed for reviewing the health of the first-year students. International opportunities KY is becoming more and more international every year. We want to make sure all our members feel included, and, hence, our official communication language is English.
International exchange Every autumn and spring hundreds of students take a step to unknown and spend a semester abroad in foreign universities. Aalto cooperates with some of the top universities in the world, and you can find potential exchange destinations from almost everywhere. The best thing is that Aalto supports every outgoing student with a 1500â‚Ź grant. Since we are sending people abroad, in return we welcome many exchange students to Finland every year. KY-Sub, the international subcommittee of KY, is responsible for ensuring that these students can experience the wonders of Finland and learn what sisu is. Turn to page 24 to learn more about KY-Sub.
Representative Council The highest decisive power in KY is held by the Representative Council. Also international students have the opportunity to run in the elections. The working language of the Representative Council was changed into English two years ago, and the first RepCo operating in English has had an international member. If you want to participate in the most important decision making in KY and improve your language skills, make sure to run at the elections this autumn!
Tutoring As a tutor, you have two options to meet international students. The first option is to become an exchange tutor. The other possibility is to become a Master’s level tutor as the Master’s programmes in Aalto BIZ are open for international students as well. Tutoring is a great opportunity to guide new students into the world of KY and student culture, as well as to help them in everyday life in Finland.

KY service hours at Espilä Monday – Thursday 13:00–17:00
At the Otaniemi campus, Bachelor’s students at the School of Business carry out their studies at the Undergraduate Centre on Otakaari 1, along with students of many other Aalto disciplines. Master’s students’ home is the new School of Business at Ekonominaukio 1. If you want to meet other Aalto business students during the day, go check out KY Corner, a break room located in the U-wing of the Undergraduate Center. KY’s Office, Espilä, and event space Saha are both just a few minutes away from the Undergraduate Centre and right next to the new School of Business.
Espilä Espilä is located at Konemiehentie 4, right opposite of KY’s event space Saha. Espilä is where the KY Board, employees and staff of KY Foundation work at. Espilä has conference rooms available for reservation and common working space open to all KY members to use. Don’t hesitate to drop in for a cup of coffee (it’s free for all KY members!) and say hi to KY Board and employees! When in need of KY-related assistance, turn to the KY member service. They will assist you in, for example, buying KY products, getting a KY sticker on your student card or going through the lost & found after a slightly longer and blurrier night. Member service can be reached during service hours by calling 040 353 8283, or by emailing at palvelu@ky.fi. You can, of course, always come by and get the help you need in person.

As an Aalto School of Business and KY alumna, I’d like to share small tips that I hope someone would have told me back then: Nobody knows what they want to do when they grow up. And that is what makes the upcoming years so great: the possibility to explore different courses and directions. Interdisciplinary Aalto projects and studies abroad are my personal recommendations! Get involved with student organization activities. The skills and experiences I gained at KY are invaluable. Not to forget the friendships for lifetime. When it comes to the career options: stay open minded and explore potential paths. Attend company visits and reflect what is important for you. For me, talking with people that work in different organizations has been the most eye-opening experience. If it was not the courses that I took, the people I met and the parties I attended, I would not be where I am right now, helping Finnish and Nordic companies to become high performance businesses. Enjoy the amazing times ahead of you! Hope to see you in our events soon!
Best regards, Stella Kallionpää M.Sc., Aalto University School of Business Management Consultant

KY OFFICE
In the heart of KY, working at the KY Office, there are four sectors: Academic Affairs, Communications, Community and Corporate Relations – all of which are managed by KY Board members and employees. Additionally, KY Office is also home to KY Foundation.
This section of KY Guide introduces you to the people who devote a huge part of their time to KY, running the organization’s daily routines. Turn the page to get to know these people!

Ky Office
KY is here for you I remember my first day at Aalto BIZ like it was yesterday – and believe me, it wasn’t. I was super nervous since I didn’t know many people in advance and the ones I did, I had just met a couple of days earlier at Jäänmurtajaiset. I entered the school building hoping I would bump into the less-than-ten people I knew – and luckily saw one talking to a group of people I hadn’t met yet. I gathered all my courage and went to say hi and to introduce myself. After chatting for a while, we went to the first class together and I remember being so relieved I didn’t have to sit alone. The lecturer started to talk, and while other things have gotten blurred in my head, one thing he said I will remember for the rest of my life: ”Look around you. You may not believe it now but next to you could sit your future spouse or best friend.” People laughed nervously (while looking around, of course). Little did I know how right he was. The first moments in a new community might feel a bit overwhelming, exciting and even frightening. Entering student life means also getting to know a bunch of new terms (of which I hope at least KY and AYY are now familiar to you), learning how to navigate in a new environment and participating in a lot of social situations. You might feel that you are just another brick in the wall, but let me tell you: you matter a lot. Our mission at the KY Office is to create a community where everybody feels welcome. This mission cannot be obtained without each and everyone of our member’s input – and this means you too. That is why KY is just as welcoming and tight community as we together make it – a brick wall with or, hopefully, without holes. I ended up where I am thanks to trying out new things, aiming to make a difference and, let’s face it, mere luck. One can always get involved intentionally and pursue things but sometimes it’s up to a coincidence how things turn out. That is why I’d encourage
62
you to keep your eyes open and embrace the things that you like while trying to better the things that don’t work in your opinion. KY has as many options on how to get involved as there are members in our community. We have three subcommittees, six committees and over 60 clubs to start with. Or, if you are feeling especially courageous, one way of diving into the heart of KY is to run in the Representative Council elections this autumn. Whatever the way, dig into the things your new community has to offer! During my years at KY, I have found friends from my tutor group, from school group works, from the clubs I’ve volunteered in, from events I’ve attended and from KY Office, to mention a few places. Oh, and remember in the beginning of this text when I told how I went to talk to a group of people I knew hardly at all? One of those people ended up being my roommate and one of my closest friends. You can never know how things will turn out so my suggestion is to just be yourself, and you will find like-minded people – and most likely make valuable relationships on the way. KY has given me my spouse, many of my best friends, experiences such as performing in front of thousands of people with said friends, my current job and countless of hours in the KY Building’s basements with laughter and good times. I hope that you too can find your place in our community. Your tutors, I and the whole KY Office are happy to help you on the way, whether it is about juggling options on where to get involved or struggling on how to use Espilä’s coffee maker (the coffee is free for you, btw). We are here for you. See you around! Nina Pitkänen, Executive Director

KY Board The KY Board wields the highest executive power at KY. They are the face and voice of the members, steering the day-to-day activities according to our strategy, while upholding our culture and traditions. The board consists of nine Aalto BIZ students chosen by the representative council for a one-year term each autumn. Board membership is a full-time position with limited time available for other interests and studies. However, the board gets to be a part of decision-making at the highest level and a part of an unforgettable year in general. The duties of KY Board include running the ongoing operations at KY and dealing with matters related to studies, career and free time of KY members. The board represents KY at various events, groups and meetings, and makes sure that the voice of the students is heard at both university and national level. Helping to achieve all this, the board is supported by KY’s employees as well as several committees, project teams and other volunteers. Each board member has specific duties depending on their role and portfolio of responsibilities. Our Chairman Arttu Aine divides his time between general leadership, management tasks and representing KY. He is also involved in projects such as societal impact by leading the corresponding task forces. Our Vice Chairman Elias Hoffrén oversees the new student center project and is in charge of finance, as well as supporting the work of the chairman and the board. You can read more about the rest of the board on the following pages. Even though the board has great responsibilities and works full-time, the members are also your fellow Aalto BIZ students – and they’re here for you! This means that at any point, whether you have an idea or a problem, just contact the board and get the help you need. See you at Espilä!

Academic Affairs The Academic Affairs sector ensures that the education we business students receive is at the level it should be in our world-class university.
KY’s academic affairs work concentrates on acting as the voice of the business students of Aalto University in both school and national level discussions. The advocacy work focuses on improving the quality and appreciation of education by active participation and collaboration with the School of Business and AYY. Two KY Board members, Maria Aalto and Heikki Helaniemi, are in charge of KY’s Academic and Educational Affairs but the work is not done solely by two people. Academic Affairs Committee KOVA, subject clubs and student representatives of the administration, hallopeds, all participate in student advocacy too. KY’s Academic Affairs sector handles also campus affairs which focus on developing the learning spaces of the business students on both campuses (Mikkeli and Otaniemi). This year campus affairs have concentrated on the move as the School of Business relocated entirely to Otaniemi in the beginning of 2019. The completely new School of Business and the Undergraduate Center in Otaniemi have great places to study which are always developed to be even better.
KOVA
But how can you get involved as a fresh mursu?
Did you think that the fun will end after your graduation in Bachelor’s degree? We didn’t either! The purpose of Masters’ Committee is to organize interesting events which are targeted to Master’s students across different majors. Masters’ Committee will make sure that there will be opportunities for getting to know new people also during Master’s studies. The committee gathers together people from different backgrounds, who e.g. are eager to do more for KY or are interested in volunteering also during their Master’s studies. This includes, of course, many fancy nights full of sparkle. You can come say hi to us already during the orientation week at our event Meet Your Masters – let’s have a night we won’t forget!
Some basic courses have seen changes this year and thus giving feedback about these courses and studies is more important than before. We strongly emphasize the importance of answering the course feedback form, commenting courses on KY’s Fringe Study Guide and sending KY’s Academic Affairs sector questions, ideas and feedback about studies. Some first year students can even become course messengers and share opinions directly with the course teachers. More information about study matters can be found in ky.fi/studies. Don’t hesitate to call, email or visit KY’s Academic Affairs sector. We are here for you to make sure you are heard in the university, the school and the student union!
66
KY’s Academic Affairs Committee, KOVA, is responsible for supervising student interests, taking part in academic discussion and cooperation with Aalto BIZ. Our goal is to improve studies and to ensure that daily university life runs smoothly. For example, KOVA maintains the studies page (ky.fi/studies) where you can find useful information related to your studies. While you’re there, be sure to check out the Fringe Study Guide, where you’ll be able to leave feedback on courses and see what other students think of various courses. KOVA also organizes events, like Proffa-lauluilta, where students have the opportunity to get to know their professors in a festive setting. Conducting surveys is similarly important to ensure student wellbeing, quality education and to determine who’s worthy of the Teacher of the Year Award!

Corporate Relations Academic education offers us skills and qualification for our upcoming career, but the meaning of working experience gained through summer jobs or working parttime while studying can’t be shunned away. KY and its partners are here to help you with getting that experience! They say that business students at KY are dragged deep into the working life long before they even reach graduation. In many cases, this happens to be true, and we are here to make sure that this will continue to be the situation also in the future. But then, who are we? I am Mikko Hiltunen and I’m responsible for corporate relations on the board of KY. My partner in crime, Mark MacMoffat, is the Sales Coordinator of KY. Together with CORE we form the corporate relations sector. In addition, many of our organizations and volunteers also have their own partnerships with different companies, and we are here to lend a helping hand when they need it. The corporate relations sector is responsible for work & career functions at KY. This means that we work as a link between companies and students; we bring companies closer to students and students closer to companies. This is a win-win for all parties: companies get to meet and get in touch with their future talents and our future talents (which means you, my friend) get to know the companies and hear about their extraordinary career and work opportunities. In practice, this happens through events, excursions, overviews on social media, job announcements, etc. Additionally, many of our beloved cultural events, such as Wappu, our Annual Ball and Boston Night, couldn’t be organized without cooperating with our partners. But what kind of work opportunities do the companies have and what kind of career is waiting for you just around the corner? Well, that depends totally on you! The education that you get in a business school, and especially our’s, can and will prepare you to be an expert in almost anything. In 2018, the most employing industries for graduated KY members were, however, consulting (26%), IT/Tele (15%), the financial industry (14%) and marketing/media/communications (10%). List of some of the job titles of graduated members: Business Analyst, Analyst Consultant Associate Development Manager Marketing Manager Sales Manager Controller Project Manager Communications Specialist Even though the school gives us excellent resources for our future working lives, working during your studies takes theory to practice already before graduation. In 2018, approximately 80% of our busi-
68
ness students had been working during their studies before graduation. But you shouldn’t stress at all if you don’t nail a perfect summer job during your first years of studies - your time will eventually come! Remember that your future is bright, and all experience is good for you. You can find KY’s current partners from ky.fi/career.

CORE At the CORE of business! Corporate Relations Committee, CORE, is the newest committee at KY. It was born as a renewal of the past committee, Sales Academy. The main mission of the committee is to support students’ work & career related endeavors by bringing companies closer to students and making them approachable. This is done by arranging events such as Case Night, Trainee Night, Summer Job Night & Hartwall Game Nights. CORE’s members have a unique chance to develop their negotiation skills and network with talented professionals by being in close contact with KY’s corporate partners. These skills are also practiced when negotiating new discounts (KY Benefits) to our precious members. You can find KY Benefits from page 77 or ky.fi/benefits. A confident touch with a twinkle in the eye - that’s how CORE rolls.

Community Every KY member is a part of our community, and we all partake in building it. KY’s community sector is the biggest and brightest consisting of culture, new students, student wellbeing and clubs. This sector is also responsible of supporting and thanking our volunteers including clubs, project teams, subcommittees and tutors.
Student wellbeing KY Board member Ville Koikkalainen together with the Association Coordinator Jarkko Kosunen ensure that students feel good both mentally and physically amid all the academic responsibilities and cultural activities. The Sports and Wellbeing Committee LiHy and many of our sports clubs regularly organize events to take care of your body and mind, ranging from university-wide Aalto City Challenge and Feel Good Weeks held twice per year to trying out different sports with one of the many clubs. The sector is also constantly working on finding new and better ways to support the wellbeing and stress management of KY members so that the student life doesn’t get all too exhausting. KY wants to provide a safe and equal environment for its members and thus we don’t tolerate any inappropriate behavior in our community. We want to make every single one of our members feel welcomed in the community!
Culture The culture at KY is something you cannot compare to anything else. While all of KY’s associations partake into the bigger picture, the cultural sector treasures our most beloved traditions by overseeing events from the Annual Ball and Wappu to Kuntis parties and lauluilta dinners. The sector is run by KY Board member responsible for culture Kia Tuominen and the Culture Producer Arttu Lääkkölä. A significant amount of time is allocated to supporting our volunteers, especially our three subcommittees, KUJ, NESU-KY and KY-Sub. Kia also acts as chair and Arttu as the secretary of the Cultural Committee, KUVA, the team behind many KY’s events. In addition to overseeing spectacular events, the cultural sector also works towards building a stronger Aalto community and, hence, communicates with other student associations’ cultural actors on a regular basis.

the School of Business and chair of Tutor Committee, and Kia Tuominen, KY Board member responsible for new students. The sector has the sole goal of enabling everyone’s start at the School of Business and KY to be as effortless as possible. This is done together with all other KY members from KY Office members to association volunteers.
Clubs KY is the home for around 60 associations, of which many are clubs. KY’s Association Coordinator Jarkko Kosunen and Ville Koikkalainen, KY Board member responsible of clubs, ensure that all clubs get the support and guidance they need. KY’s clubs offer almost anything you could imagine, and they are an important part of the culture here at KY. However, if you feel like something is missing or have an amazing new idea you want to try out, you are more than welcome to start a project or a club of your own. Just contact Jarkko and he will respond to any questions you might have!

Warmly welcoming the new Bachelor’s, Master’s and Exchange students to KY and Aalto is a crucial part of building the KY community and passing the traditions on to the new generations of KY members. The sector ensures that your student life gets a smooth start by designating a trained tutor for you, organizing orientation week and cooperating with the School of Business. The sector is run by Tiiariikka Vihko, the Tutor coordinator at
The Sports and Wellbeing Committee, LiHy, organizes a wide range of events to support students’ physical and mental wellbeing and to build a sense of KY community. The events include anything we recall a Kylteri may need to balance out the student life, from a free of charge cake buffet and a wine and dine night to a multidisciplinary biking adventure Aalto City Challenge and a week-long hiking trip in Lapland. ognized by their fashionable three-stripe jackets, their big smiles and (sometimes way too) high energy levels. A year in the committee gives the members not only lots of new friends, but also a unique opportunity to organize events and practice leadership, marketing and teamwork skills. The committee’s goal is to provide students with unforgettable memories – and of course to have fun!
Tutor Committee Likely, your first touch to KY and School of Business has been your very own tutor. Tutor Committee is responsible for recruiting and training all the tutors, as well as organizing events for them, e.g. Tutor cottage in the summer. Tutors lead you, mursus, to the world of Aalto, academia, KY and memorable student life. Tutor Committee makes sure that all tutors are top-notch and can create a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for the new students. This year Tutor Committee consists of Tutor Coordinator, seven committee members, and KY Board’s new students representative. Committee members are either responsible for Bachelor’s, Exchange or Master’s tutors and while supporting these tutors, they learn the valuable project and team management skills. Members of the committee wear committee t-shirts and are always willing to answer questions about tutoring!

Communications KY has a lot going on, and all of it needs to be communicated to our members and to the outside world. This is where KY’s Communications sector comes into play. Where would we be if nobody knew anything? Thanks to our board member Pyry Päivärinta and Communications Coordinator Elina Anttalainen, we’ll never have to find out. They are responsible for communicating everything that’s happening. KY’s main communication channels are KY’s social medias, website ky.fi and our weekly newsletter Monday Mail. KY is active on Instagram (@ky_1911), Snapchat (@ky_1911) and Facebook (KY – Aalto University Business Students). You should also join the three Facebook groups: KY Events, KY Career and KY Today. The Communications sector doesn’t end there. It also includes Art Director Roosa Airaksinen, IT Coordinator Ohto Pentikäinen and the Editor-in-Chief of the Kylteri Magazine Markus Nieminen. Roosa is responsible for all visuals at KY. AD’s projects range from event graphics to this KY Guide and Kylteri magazine. AD works closely with the Editor-in-Chief of Kylteri, who oversees everything concerning the student magazine. IT Coordinator is responsible for
technological things, such as the website, maintaining technology at KY’s premises and new projects regarding technology. IT Coordinator is also part of TEKNISTÄ Committee (page 27). We are extremely proud of our colors, logo and history, and you should be too. Don’t forget to show where you’re from – get your KY Products ranging from sweatshirts to scarfs from the KY Office. All products can be found from ky.fi/ky-products Communications exists to bring KY close to its members, and we want to be as transparent as possible. If you ever feel like something could be done differently or something wasn’t as clear as it should be, contact the Communications sector – or just come and say hi, you don’t need to have a reason!

Free premises and legal services for business students KY Foundation provides students and KY’s associations with free space to operate and organize events in. The seven-story KY Building in Kamppi, Helsinki forms a cornerstone in KY’s history and has been in active use since its completion in 1941. Located on Pohjoinen Rautatiekatu, the basement and third floor of the building host various meetings and parties throughout the year. On the Otaniemi campus, the main KY Office “Espilä” and the party venue “Saha” stand on opposite sides of Konemiehentie, providing KY members and associations with space for different pur-
poses. Whether organizing larger meetings, parties or chilling with coffee, these buildings provide business students with the space they need. In addition to free premises, KY Foundation provides Aalto business students with free legal services. The legal advisor Matti Marttunen can be found in KY Building every Thursday from 16.00 to 18.00 (time and date subject to changes), and provides free counseling to all KY members and associations. The independent Kylteri magazine (kylteri.fi) is also published by the Foundation.
Student-led decision making Decision making and operation at KY Foundation is led by the Executive Board and its Chairman Kari Karttunen. The board consists of a student majority and specialist members of asset and real estate management, who make sure the Foundation’s possessions are governed in the best possible way. To keep the students’ best interest at heart, the Board is overseen by a Supervisory Board consisting of the KY Association’s representative council members (page 42). Day-to-day operations run through Managing Director Juho Paavola.

KY Building’s future KY Foundation has been planning to return KY Building to its original use and renovate most of the building into student apartments. If everything goes as planned and the conversion proves feasible, the building will go to renovation in summer 2020. The renovation is expected to last approximately 18 months, after which the new apartments and a refurbished party space will be opened for students. The Foundation and the KY Association are preparing to provide students with temporary solutions to replace KY Building’s services during the renovation.
