MURSU, WELCOME TO KY! You made it. Getting accepted to Aalto University School of Business is a great achievement, and many would love to be where you are right now. Welcome to the best student community this country has to offer! But wait for it, the greatest journey of your life is only starting. Traditionally, the first year students in our school are called ‘mursus’ instead of ‘fuksis’. Be proud of your title, not everyone qualifies for it.

Aalto University Business Students, more familiarly known as KY, is the home and community for students at Aalto University School of Business. KY, founded in 1911, equals its members, a community of motivated and capable future game-changers from the best business school in Finland. KY provides its members with everything they need and want in their life as a student – and even after graduation!
But how can all this translate into the best years of your life? I encourage you to keep an open mind and try new things. KY is a community where every student is welcome and where everyone has a chance to exceed themselves and find like-minded people. Student life is full of possibilities – you never know what kind of opportunities await around the corner. Take a chance, try and experience it!

Aalto University Business Students, KY, guarantees you memorable years to come as a student at the School of Business. You’ll make lifelong friends and have a chance to join in on amazing parties and events wearing your dollar-green overalls. In addition, you’ll get to network with our alumni and build valuable ties to work life already early in your studies. KY life is filled with diverse activities – from relaxed movie evenings to wild parties, from fancy gala events to sports and adventures in the wilderness. The wide range of activities guarantees that you will surely find the place where you feel most at home. This guide aims to make you familiar with KY, its activity offerings and its history, dating back all the way to 1911. Don’t hesitate to get involved!
AS A BUSINESS STUDENT AT AALTO UNIVERSITY In 2009, three universities in the Helsinki metropolitan area (the Helsinki University of Technology, the Helsinki School of Economics and the University of Art and Design Helsinki) merged into one new entity, Aalto University. As a result, when beginning your studies you will become a member of the Aalto University Student Union (AYY). AYY mainly concentrates on student advocacy and lobbying, whereas KY seeks to look after the interests of business students specifically. If you wish to have a peek outside the world of business, AYY is worth exploring! The student union gives you a chance to make friends across academic boundaries. Read more about AYY on page 48.
AS AN AYY MEMBER To prove your student status during your study years, you will need a national student card. The student card will grant you access to discounts on public transport and trains, as well as the right to purchase cheap meals at student caféterias.
INTRO
Once your card is ready for pickup, you will find it at AYY’s Service Desk. During the first weeks of fall this may take a while, as every new student will be ordering their card simultaneously. However, even before receiving the actual card you will get access to the discounts by paying the AYY membership fee – just hold on to your membership payment receipt and get it stamped at the Help Desk of the Aalto University School of Business. The receipt will serve as your temporary student card.
AS A KY MEMBER New business students don’t automatically become members of KY. To join the association, fill out the membership form available on our website at kyweb. fi/join. Joining is free of charge, and it’s definitely advisable, as the membership comes with many benefits. As a member you get, for example, access to various discounts available for KY members only. More about the member benefits on pages 11 and 55. Once you have received your student card, pick up a separate sticker at the KY office to be able to prove your membership. Before receiving the official card you can already get access to the benefits by getting a KY stamp on the receipt of the paid AYY membership fee.
AS AN EXCHANGE STUDENT Exchange students are unfortunately unable to officially join KY. However, they do get the same student benefits by showing their student card as Finnish students do and also have the opportunity to enhance their discount portfolio by getting a KY sticker on their student card. The stickers can be retrieved from the KY office on Konemiehentie 4 in Otaniemi or Pohjoinen Rautatiekatu 21 in Töölö.

A GLANCE INTO THE HISTORY OF KY 1910s: KY’S FIRST STEPS
The Helsinki School of Economics Student Association (Kauppakorkeakoulun Oppilasyhdistys) was founded on October 7th, 1911, as a student association for the first Finnish-speaking university-level business school. During its first years, the union had only around 70 members, and limited financial resources made operating difficult. KY’s flag, student ribbon and emblem all date back to the beginning of the student union, and they are still used to this day.
1920s: PARTYING DESPITE THE PROHIBITION
In 1923, the name of the association was changed – Helsinki School of Economics Student Union (KY) was founded. The prohibition of alcohol created its own set of challenges for KY’s active cultural sector, but thanks to clever students, one did not have to merely sip lemonade at parties. In 1927 Bonsdorff, the dean of the university, gave the student union its own space, a school courtyard building. The dream of building a house of their own, however, had started to develop in the students’ minds.
1930s: KY BUILDING IN THE HORIZON
Financing an own building was a long process. Several fundraisers were organized, with a raffle being the tip of the iceberg. The tickets were in high demand: according to the news, during a local break-in the burglar had only stolen KY raffle tickets.

At times the depression drove the entire construction project into a difficult situation. Fortunately, will power, hard work and a pinch of luck led to success and a land-purchasing agreement was finally signed in 1939. Construction planning commenced immediately.
1940s: KY BUILDING IS COMPLETED
During World War II the school’s doors were open infrequently. Thanks to KY, students at the front were sent study materials to be able to continue their studies even during the war. Even though the war had slowed down the construction project, the KY Building was finished in February 1940, and the first ever KY Annual Ball was held right away. Traditional events, such as Mursujaiset and Wappu, too, were organized despite the war. Soon after the building was completed, a few lucky KY members had the chance to move into their new homes on the top floors of the building. The apartments were scarce and the price was staggering compared to the average city rental prices. In addition to the apartments, KY’s own club space was opened in the building.
1950s: TO TOP OFF, SMOKE A BOSTON!
In post-war Finland the time was spent rebuilding the society and the economy. As the business degree was changed to a three-year model, KY’s member base grew instantly from a few hundred to over a thousand members. KY’s first achievement in commercial entrepreneurship was founding the tobacco corporation AmerTupakka Oy in 1950 and, thanks to cunning marketing, Amer’s Boston cigarettes quickly grew to be a widely popular brand. In public, KY and Boston were quickly connected – events such as Mursujaiset and Wappu were sponsored by Boston. Club activity started to show signs of life in the 1950s. KY’s sports club was in its golden age, and in many academic leagues KY was often unbeatable. KY Sanomat, a magazine with two publications a year, was also established in the 50s.

1960s: THE DECADE OF FINNFOCUS KY was also active outside the student union, and AND TELEVISION the media diligently followed KY’s affairs. KY contin The huge export trade show, Finnfocus, held in London in 1968 is the biggest event in KY history. KY rented M/S Finnpartner from Amer, and the ship sailed to London to promote Finland and Finnish companies internationally. The project was a bold and risky investment, which fortunately ended up creating a lot of positive publicity for the student union. During the 60s KY was also active in the TV business: KY was a share-holder in Tesvisio, the company behind the first commercial TV channel in Finland. Student numbers increased quickly at the beginning of the 1960s, and housing challenges grew, especially in Helsinki. To find a solution, KY started building student housing on Ruusulankatu in Töölö.
1970s: TURNING KY BUILDING INTO OFFICE SPACE
Student union activities became all the more political in the 70s. Political battles and, as a result, frequent changes in the KY board depict the time at KY. KY members’ problems with apartment availability continued, even though the Vaasankatu student dormitory was completed in 1970. A hot topic was the fate of the KY Building – should existing student housing be kept or should the building’s financial potential be better utilized? After a long debate, KY finally decided to change the building’s dormitory into office space. This worsened students’ housing situations temporarily, but in the long run turned out to be a profitable solution.
1980s: FROM PINSTRIPES TO OVERALLS AND POLITICS TO PARTYING
In the 1980s, the student union’s activity wasn’t as political as in the previous decades. KY members partied at the student union’s own restaurants – one of the most popular nightclubs of the time, KY-Exit, was located in the KY Building. The use of overalls became more common as student life came closer to what it is today. In the whirlwind of the casino economy KY began to diversify its stock ownings, and KY-owned companies were run through the Ekomen Group. Professionals were hired to lead the previously student-run businesses.

ued searching for its limits and offered financing for creating a new radio channel, Radio City. Ultimately, the channel was discontinued in 2006, after over 20 years of continuous broadcasting.

1990s: EMERGING FROM DEPRESSION
The deep depression in Finland at the beginning of the decade severely affected KY. The Ekomen Group declared bankruptcy in 1992, and KY struggled with grave financial difficulties. To balance its finances KY sold its stock holdings in Amer. The representative council’s meeting leading to the decision was followed by the national news. During the 90s students’ rights were closely monitored as times were exceptionally rough. International activities became livelier in the 90s, and environmental issues emerged into discussion. The decade was labeled by organizational reform and the search for a better service portfolio. KY made further real estate investments as a response to students’ bad housing situations.
2000s: KY IN THE NEW MILLENNIUM
Increasing the service level was a major focus point of the first decade of the new millennium. In this spirit, KY created a fund for international exchange, from which all the students going on an exchange received a compensation for their traveling expenses. In addition, the apartment offering kept on expanding when new apartment buildings were finished in Arabianranta in 2006 and Arkadiankatu in 2009.
2010s: KY AS AN ASSOCIATION
Come Aalto University and Aalto University Student Union, KY’s status as a student union was retracted, and KY as an association started its operations on January 1st, 2010. During the first years, KY searched for its place in the new union and looked for new directions. Also the KY Foundation started operating in 2010. Last year, in 2015, after more than 100 years in Töölö and 75 years in the KY Building, KY expanded to Otaniemi and focused the majority of its activities on the Otaniemi campus.

EVENTS
WAPPU Wappu is a student’s Christmas, New Year’s and birthday all wrapped into one. KY Wappu is filled with various events, such as the Kymppisuora pub crawl, the traditional Wappu terrace and a picnic at Ullanlinnanmäki. Before Manta gets her cap it is time for the Wappu parade – KY marches in one joyful group to Kauppatori. The celebration culminates in KY’s Wappukuntis at Kaivohuone. After a night of partying, students head to ‘Ullis’, where the first of May is spent in good company – and champagne flows all day long.
A year at KY is filled with various events – there definitely is something for every taste! We gathered here some of the highlights of the year. ORIENTATION WEEK AND MURSUJAISET To balance the boozy nights of the orientation week, the Sports and Wellbeing Committee (LiHy) organizes a playful sports event for mursus and tutors only. In the Mursu Championships tutor groups will compete against each other, collecting points at different kinds of checkpoints . You get to know KY more thoroughly at Mursu Expo, where KY’s clubs, subcommittees, committees and other volunteer associations introduce themselves. The day continues with the Mursu Party at Alakertsi, the famous party space in the basement of the KY Building. We guarantee that Alakertsi will soon be very familiar to you, like all KY premises in Töölö and Otaniemi! Another highlight of your fall, Mursujaiset, is an academic baptism for new BIZ students – we won’t, however, reveal too much about the 24h experience beforehand! Save the date (and maybe the day after), because this is something not a single mursu wants to miss!
INTERNATIONAL WEEK The highlight of October is without a doubt the International Week in Helsinki. KY hosts students from around the world, introducing them to the Finnish business world as well as to Finnish culture and traditions. The week culminates in the glamorous Boston Night dinner and its counterpart, the legendary Sillis.
Kuntis parties are organized at Helsinki’s best nightclubs – and they are for KY members only! At a kuntis, you can mingle with your fellow students, enjoy student-priced drinks and listen to live music. The entrance to a kuntis is usually free of charge. KY’s cultural subcommittee, KUJ, organizes official afterparties at Alakertsi for a couple of special kuntis parties during the year. KUJ’s parties will continue ‘till the sun rises!
KY WEEK The single most amazing event of the year takes place in February. During KY Week, we celebrate KY’s birthday – next February KY turns 106! After having enjoyed the festive atmosphere at a sitsi party and awesome performances at KY Kuntis, it’s time to dress up and head to the Annual Ball itself. With its academic traditions and a special ambiance, the Annual Ball truly is the highlight of the KY year. After a night of continuous partying, students in dollar-green overalls fill KUJ’s buses, as the always so effervescent Sillis is about to commence! Mursu, brace yourself for a hectic week!

KUNTIS PARTIES
LAULUILTA TRADITIONS AND SITSI PARTIES ‘Lauluiltas’ have very long traditions at KY. They include a nice dinner, drinks and songs. Kiljukaula, KY’s own song book, is actively used at lauluiltas and other get-togethers. A lauluilta is one of the best ways to get to know more about the traditions and roots of KY, as singing has been part of KY’s history for decades. At KY, the sitsi culture lives strong as well. A sitsi party is quite close to a lauluilta, but with its own traditions and manners. For instance, people usually wear overalls to sitsis, but dress a bit fancier for a lauluilta. Sitsi parties at KY are mainly organized by one of the three subcommittees, NESU-KY.

Mikkeli, the beautiful capital of Southern Savonia, has been home to the northern campus of Aalto University School of Business for almost 30 years. Probba ry is the student organization of Aalto University School of Business, Mikkeli Campus.
Aalto BIZ, Mikkeli Campus has the only entirely English-speaking Bachelor’s degree programme in the field of business. There are around 250 Finnish and international students in the programme. Our international atmosphere is something we are very proud of here in Mikkeli. Our professors come from several different universities from all around the world, and they teach the courses in three-week modules. Even though studying in the programme is extremely intensive, we also know how to make the most of our two years here in Mikkeli. What Mikkeli lacks in volume it sure makes up for in great atmosphere. Every year this KY’s little brother organizes several events – just ask your tutor about the notorious reputation of Mikkeli Road Trip! We hope to see many KY freshmen there this year. The majority of our events are open to all students at Aalto, and we are always more than happy to get new KY freshmen to see what life in Mikkeli campus is like – especially now that our freshmen have the right to complete their Master’s degree at the main campus. Even though all babas (that’s what we call the students on Mikkeli campus) have the same dollargreen overalls as you, we can be recognized by a special badge on our left thigh. Looking back on your student years you will surely prefer remembering not only auditoriums and lectures at Aalto BIZ, but also the hands-on experience and lifelong friendships gained while studying. KUJ KUJ, or more formally Kulttuurijaosto, is KY’s cultural subcommittee. For decades KUJ has been known for the parties and events it has organized for the students. Mursus will get their first touch with KUJ in Mursujaiset, a 24-hour ordeal for new students, which KUJ arranges to welcome mursus to our community. After Mursujaiset the most visible events by KUJ are parties like Club Lagoon (the largest student club party in Helsinki), KY’s official entrance exam party and Sillis. KUJ forms a tight community inside KY, and former members of the board are often active even years after graduation. In KUJ you will get a chance to find yourself at the heart of KY culture. We are KY International Subcommittee, or KY-Sub. Our mission is to bring international and Finnish students together by organizing amazing events for everyone studying at Aalto University School of Business – exchange students, foreign degree students and Finnish students are all warmly welcome to join our activities throughout the academic year. Our most popular events are the trips to Lapland and St. Petersburg, both organized once each semester. We also arrange cottage trips, sitsi parties and more spontaneous events such as karaoke nights and laser tag games. All our events are held in English so that everyone can have great time together and network with students from all over the world. At KY-Sub’s events, you will not only enjoy a perfect chance to integrate into the Finnish student life and have the time of your life while studying, but also learn a great deal about other cultures. In addition, you will establish international networks useful for your future career and start to see international work environment as an opportunity rather than a challenge. NESU-KY NESU-KY, the Nordic Economics Students’ Union at KY, is the biggest of KY’s three subcommittees. It also functions as a part of the larger organization NESU that aims to increase collaboration between economics students in the Nordic countries. For over half a century NESU has functioned in every Finnish city that offers university level business studies and it has also expanded to Estonia, Denmark and Iceland. NESU-KY organizes most of the sitsi parties held at KY, and the annual event portfolio also includes career events, cottage trips, cruises and the legendary Wappu Terrace. Additionally, NESU-KY cooperates and arranges events together with other student organizations such as LKS, Prodeko, Pykälä and SHS. New members are welcomed every fall. Once you become a member of NESU-KY, you will be part of the community for the rest of your studies and get a chance to build lifelong friendships and connections in Finland and other Nordic countries. AALTO PREDATORS
KY is filled with clubs for all tastes and interests. Activities range from sailing to orchestras and movie nights to wine tastings, just to name a few! You will surely find something that suits you. However, if you feel like you are still missing out on something, we encourage you to start your own club!
Aalto Predators is the American football team of Aalto University. It consists of members from every Aalto school. The team plays in the Finnish Academic League, with players of all experience levels – from beginners to Maple League and national team players. Founded in 2012, the team has steadily climbed the ranks in the Academic League to win the 2016 Student Bowl. The team hosts many sports viewings, including the Super Bowl party, open to all Aalto students. The team also organizes evenings for the players to watch games and socialize. The association includes football enthusiasts who lend their talents to the events or the board. APC – Foxes, the student cheerleading team at Aalto, is also a part of the association. American football has positions for diverse athletic types. Tryouts are held in the fall at the beginning of the academic year. Coaching is both in Finnish and in English. AEGEE-HELSINKI AEGEE is the largest interdisciplinary student association in Europe with more than 13 000 members in 40 countries. The association’s aim is to increase cooperation, communication and integration among students by organizing local and European level events. AEGEE is a voluntary, non-profit organization and it is not linked to any political party. In AEGEE-Helsinki, which is the only local branch in Finland, the members are mostly from Aalto University and the University of Helsinki. AEGEE-Helsinki organizes local events every month and European events about three times per year. The events vary from exchanges between AEGEE locals to theme parties and board game nights. AIESEC is the biggest student-run organization in the world with over 70 000 active members. AIESEC offers internships abroad and develops leadership qualities of young people around the world. Boston Promenade is KY’s very own big band. The band has entertained business students at various parties since 1964. Every year, Boston Promenade performs at KY’s most memorable events: Mursujaiset, Boston Night, the Annual Ball and PreManta. In addition, Boston Promenade regularly performs at corporate events in Finland and abroad, sometimes with special guest stars. AKYSTIC Akystic is a unique cover band, consisting of a dynamic group of young and talented musicians. The band’s repertoire covers a wide range of well-known rock, pop and dance music. Members of Akystic are well-experienced in performing, each bearing a diverse history with their own instruments. One of Akystic’s remarkable features is its ability to perform with varied assemblies, thus customising the assembly of each performance according to the customer’s needs and wishes. FBC-KY FBC-KY, also known as ‘The Snakes’, is a floorball club for business students at Aalto University. During its fouryear history, the club has succeeded in winning many prizes, Finnish University Championships in 2014 and 2015 being the best achievements. In 2016, the club won both of UniSport’s leagues, Kumpula and Otaniemi. We practise weekly, and all KY members are welcome to participate. Also, we attend several floorball leagues and tournaments during the year. Some team members have played floorball for their entire youth and others have started playing at university, so whatever your skills are, you will fit in.
HERNESAAREN NÄÄDÄT Hernesaaren Näädät is KY’s one and only, legendary ice hockey team. Since the beginning of the 90s, the home of Näädät has been the centrally located ice hockey rink of Hernesaari. Näädät gather together every week to share their passion for ice hockey. The team plays in division III in the Helsinki region and so also has, on average, a game per week in addition to the weekly trainings. Näädät start their season in the beginning of September. Furthermore, the team has several awesome events during the season, e.g. a game against Hanken, played in front of hundreds of students at the legendary Helsinki Ice Hall. BACCUS Baccus is a wine club with passion and history – it was originally founded already in the 1980s. FC Kissat is a football club for female students at Aalto University. FC Kissat is a team about good fun and exercise, and it is open to players of all skill levels. Kauppakorkeakoulun Porvarit is a political student association and a member of the Student League of National Coalition party of Finland, Tuhatkunta. KY HONBU Business students’ karate club KY Honbu arranges a beginners’ course in karate! The course starts in September. If you already know karate or some other style, you might want to start at a practice for the upper belts. Our practices are held at Aalto BIZ main building in Töölö or at Unidojo, on Pohjoinen Hesperiankatu 25. For more information visit honbu.fi. Our karate style is called Koryu Uchinadi. It is a modern application of the original Okinawan karate. The aim of the style is to improve one’s self-defense abilities in varying situations and scenarios. KY ICE KY Ice is a skating club for all Aalto students interested in ice skating. We practise once a week during semesters. The practice usually takes place on Fridays in the afternoon at Helsinki Ice Hall in Töölö. Practices are not coached, but skating is pretty fun with good music and very low price! KY UNITED KY United – men who score. KY United is the very own football club of the business students at Aalto University. The club arranges many different field activities, such as weekly futsal practices during semesters, futsal league matches and tournaments (football, futsal, beach football). Also activities off the field are arranged – match studios being a great example. The club is one of the most international ones at KY, which makes the events a great opportunity to get to know some foreign or Finnish students better. Weekly practices are open to all business students for a nominal fee. There are no special requirements for new players, but it is recommended to have some background in football. KY-SAIL KY-Sail is the students’ sailing club at Aalto BIZ, founded in 2006. The aviation club KY-mppi is one of the most active clubs at KY. KY-mppi organizes a diversity of events, both big and small, varying from skydiving to cultural events. The annual Kymppisuora, a pub crawl that kicks off KY’s Wappu, and Uusi Nousu after Boston Night and the Annual Ball are traditional events organized by KY-mppi. Other events from the past include wine tastings, movie nights and cottage trips, often done in collaboration with other student clubs. KY-SKI KY-Ski is the legendary skiing club of Aalto University School of Business. During the club’s 40-year-long existence, our golden aim has been to spread the joy of skiing culture all around us – after-skis strongly included. Surfing is also close to KY-Ski’s heart. We arrange cool events and trips to Finnish ski resorts and all the way to the Alps. In addition, we organize smaller events throughout the year and cooperate with other clubs and associations of KY and AYY, as well as with other universities. KY-Speksi is an interactive musical comedy, created by students of Aalto University School of Business, but students from other disciplines are welcome to join in as well. This ambitious yet playful production combines music, dance and out-of-this-world performances – not forgetting the mind-blowing storyline. The actors either follow the storyline or the audience’s directions. To see part of the scene replayed by improvising, a spectator can shout ‘Omstart!’ and even add a definition. For example, ‘Omstart, Game of Thrones!’ gives the audience the pleasure of seeing the scene replayed Westeros style. In KY-Speksi you get to show your skills either on stage, behind the curtains or in various production teams. Application time for next year’s production starts in early fall. KYL – HELSINKI ACADEMIC MALE CHOIR We are looking for men who can sing. As the oldest and most prestigious of KY’s clubs, KYL has changed the notion of what male choir singing is about. With us, your vocal chords will produce music ranging from Sibelius to Katy Perry while performing to audiences in top concert halls in Japan (in 2014) and nightclubs at Mummotunneli (don’t ask) or wherever duty calls. KYL is one of Finland’s top male choirs. We have won international competitions and published critically acclaimed albums. We are more interested in a good attitude than a broad musical background. Do notice, however, that KYL operates and sings in Finnish, so willingness to learn the language is a must! NESU-Probba is the NESU-organization of Aalto University School of Business, Mikkeli Campus. The purpose of NESU is to bring together business students from all around the Nordics. WhisKY was founded in 2011 to introduce the world of whiskies to students and to give them an opportunity to enjoy good quality whisky. From the beginning there have been both very experienced and less experienced enthusiasts, not to mention complete novices, attending our events. Our events are quite casual, and everybody interested is welcome to join us. In the fall we usually hold a ‘Whisky 101’ tasting, which is an excellent chance to get to know our club. At the tasting we cover the basics of whisky, how it is manufactured and some tips on how to taste it. Even if you are more experienced in the world of whisky, our tastings often have interesting rarities from different countries. We also sometimes arrange visits to importers or distilleries. KYN – KAUPPAKORKEAKOULUN YLIOPPILASKUNNAN NAISLAULAJAT KYN – an academic female choir that changes your perception of choral music! KYN is a bright, ambitious and versatile female choir. The musical strength of KYN lies in the choir’s expressiveness, rhythmic competence and unique repertoire that has delighted people from France to Taiwan. KYN has profiled itself particularly as an interpreter of ethnic jazz. In addition to concerts, KYN performs in smaller groups at various events. This fall KYN releases a new ethnic jazz album and holds a concert at Savoy Theatre on October 26th to celebrate it. After exams, on December 11th and 18th, it is time to calm down at our Christmas concerts. In 2017 KYN plans to perform with the new album and other ethnic jazz repertoire at different music festivals in Finland. WOMEN OF AALTO Women of Aalto, founded in 2015, is a platform for networking and peer support from like-minded students (including men!) across all disciplines of Aalto University. COMMITTEES KY has four committees organizing magnificent events, looking after student advocacy and taking care of back office work, such as event advertising and fixing the cooperation agreements with corporate partners. By joining a committee, you will learn things you would never learn only by attending lectures. Would you like to become a master in event organizing or get some hands-on selling experience? These four committees make learning new skills possible!
CULTURAL COMMITTEE KUVA ACADEMIC COMMITTEE KOVA The Academic Committee, KOVA, supervises students’ interests, takes part in academic discussion and organizes study-related projects, many of which arranged in cooperation with Aalto BIZ and vital to enable smooth daily life at the school. The committee organizes the ‘Think Up!’ survey in order to collect feedback on study-related matters at Aalto BIZ and does lobbying towards the school management. KOVA is also responsible for KY Corner, KY’s new space located in the U-wing of the Undergraduate Center. Additionally, the committee maintains the online Fringe Study Guide at kyweb.fi/voo and names the Teacher of the Year.

KY’s calendar is filled with different kinds of cultural events, many of which arranged by KY’s Cultural Committee, KUVA. These events include pub crawls, dinner parties, culture events and KY’s famous Wappu celebration, just to name a few. The selection is very wide and it surely offers something for every KY member! In addition to making some unforgettable memories and new friends, being part of this team will teach you important teamwork and project management skills, which will for sure be useful in the future. SPORTS AND WELLBEING COMMITTEE LIHY
SALES ACADEMY KY’s very own Sales Academy brings companies closer to students. This dynamic and energetic committee is in charge of negotiating KY’s member benefits – one of the most important services KY offers its members. Sales Academy, led by the KY board member responsible for corporate relations, also promotes sales and entrepreneurship at KY with a handful of events organized in cooperation with sponsoring companies. All current and previous committee members can be recognized by pinstriped sleeves on their overalls.
The Sports and Wellbeing Committee, LiHy, organizes a wide range of events to support students’ physical and mental wellbeing. The committee is responsible for approximately seven events per year, e.g. the student rowing competition Autumn Classic and KY’s traditional hiking trip to Lapland. You should also come taste the delicious cakes at our cake buffet! The members of LiHy can be recognized by the sporty red Adidas jackets and rock-hard team spirit. A year in the committee gives the members not only lots of new friends, but also a unique opportunity to organize events and practise leadership, marketing and teamwork skills. The committee’s goal is to provide students with unforgettable memories, give some balance to the hectic student life – and of course to have fun!
+ROUND TABLES Round Tables were established to bring KY’s core associations and functions together, create conversation and collaboration, share information and best practices and to give the members a chance to be involved in decision-making at KY. Another important part of Round Tables is to give the people the support they need to get things done in their own associations. There are five Round Tables, each run by a KY board member. Two of the RTs bring together the people in charge of communications at their associations, while the third one one mainly concentrates on career communications. The RT for the chairmen of KY’s subject clubs (also known as AJPJ) helps the subject clubs share information with one another. The fifth Round Table gathers the people in charge of corporate relations at different associations at KY. Round Tables are quite a flexible concept and will presumably be reformed over the years.

In addition to some of KY’s biggest event projects of KY, these teams are also responsible for e.g. organizing tutoring for new students and planning activities tailored particularly for specific student groups. INTERNATIONAL WEEK TEAM
KY MASTERS’ CLUB
In addition to sending members abroad, KY organizes its own International Week annually in Helsinki, welcoming about 30 students from around the world. The week, held in October, is completely organized by a team of around six students selected at the beginning of the year. Arranging a week of activities is a challenge, but also perhaps one of the most rewarding international projects at KY. The Helsinki IW is visible to the rest of the KY members as well – the week is one of the busiest of the fall when it comes to partying! An important but less demanding role in Helsinki IW can be acquired by applying to be a host for the international visitors. As a reward the hosts get the right to participate in the program of the whole week, from company visits to parties. The application starts in fall, so keep your eyes and ears open!
Many of KY’s actors have migrated to Otaniemi, yet our eager and energetic group of Master’s students ensures that Töölö is by no means forgotten! KY Masters’ Club caters to the needs of our Master’s level students, offering networking opportunities, sophisticated soirées and excursions customized especially for MsC students – and of course a chance to balance your studies by taking part in creating new event concepts for your fellow students. Events are often organized in collaboration with other student associations such as Hanken’s SHS Masters’ Committee, so you are bound to extend your network beyond Aalto BIZ. Want to find out more? TUTOR COMMITTEE
Annex @ Aalto is a multidisciplinary two-day event that unites business and tech students with the brightest minds of the business world to create new ideas, learn together and make brave combinations. The event provides Finland’s sharpest students with an opportunity for fruitful interaction and concrete learning experiences while bringing insight to the most current business topics. Annex @ Aalto is about creating connections between people, topics, companies, and methodologies: bringing different and fresh collaboration to the Aalto community and beyond. The multidisciplinary team started its work in March to ensure that at the beginning of 2017 you can come and experience what Aalto can be at its best!
The Annual Ball is the most traditional event at KY – the celebration of KY’s long history. However, every Annual Ball is the creation of the team organizing it and therefore unique. This crown jewel of KY’s culture has introduced KY members to the elegant side of life – in 2011, for example, at the world-renowned Finlandia Hall. In 2016, KY’s 105th birthday was celebrated under the historical lights of Kalastajatorppa. The Annual Ball Committee, the team behind this glamorous celebration, is led by a chairman, and other roles in the committee could be, for example, the responsibility for decorations, invitations, corporate relations or location. The members of the committee are chosen during autumn, usually in October. The Annual Ball itself takes place at the end of February.
EnerKY is composed of KY’s sport tutors, who – with the help of the KY board member responsible for sports and wellbeing – cooperate with AYY and Unisport. EnerKY’s mission is to inspire KY members to try new sports and have fun together while staying active.This small but effective group works together seamlessly, coming up with plenty of new ideas to get students moving. The sports activities that EnerKY organizes are usually very loweffort and low-cost. In the past the team has arranged, for example, weekly running meetings (LenkKY) and floorball games, as well as crossfit, pole dancing and climbing experimentations. The Tutor Committee is responsible for recruiting and training all the tutors of Aalto University School of Business. These tutors will lead you to the world of academia, Aalto, KY and a memorable student life. You will share unforgettable moments with your tutor and the other mursus in your group, and the Tutor Committee makes sure the tutors are all top-notch and nothing less than brilliant for our new mursus! Tutoring at Aalto BIZ is a shared project between KY and the School of Business. The Tutor Committee is led by a Tutor Coordinator and supervised by a KY board member and a faculty representative. The committee takes care of the Bachelor’s and Master’s level tutors as well as the exchange tutors, while doing their best to acquaint BIZ tutors with both Otaniemi and Töölö. SUBJECT CLUBS Subject clubs represent the variety of subjects taught at Aalto University School of Business. Each study programme has a subject club organizing leisure time activities and maintaining good relations with the faculty. AALTO MARKETING SOCIETY
Aalto Management and International Business, briefly M!B, is a subject club for all Aalto University students interested in the aforementioned subjects. The club’s aim is to lobby the interests of management and IB students in cooperation with the Department of Management and to help management students build their careers by connecting them with interesting employers. M!B organizes various activities for its members to connect them with the faculty and work life and to get together with like-minded students. KY ACCOUNTING KY Accounting is the subject club for accounting students at Aalto University. It was founded in 2000 as KY Profit, but changed its name in 2008. Kylteri magazine, founded in 1999, aims to offer both in-depth, meaningful articles and more light-hearted pieces. The editorial team aims to give a broad coverage of different perspectives and people. For 17 years Kylteri has been a representation of its time. In 2016 Kylteri launched an online magazine at kylteri.fi. This year the visual identity of the print magazine was also freshened up and the logo of the
magazine was redone. The philosophy behind Kylteri’s aesthetics today is to work with clean lines and strong visual storytelling through photographs. This year the magazine has covered, for example, blogging about menswear, clichés linked to bankers and emerging startups. The average distribution of Kylteri is 1400.

Are you into writing, photographing or illustrating? Or just interested in the student world and phenomena? Kylteri offers you a chance to develop yourself and learn what it takes to work as a journalist and make a magazine. The editorial team is always looking for new assistants! The assistants are paid a small compensation of 30–70 euros, depending on the task at hand. The magazine is published four times a year, and the next issue will be published in October. The process of making a new issue of Kylteri usually begins with an editorial meeting with the assistants – this is the time for generating ideas and planning the magazine structure. It is okay to participate in the meeting even if you are not willing to write anything! Assisting Kylteri magazine requires capability to do independent work. The editorial staff offers you support and guidance to complete your task, but, in the end, the process of writing, photographing and illustrating is an opportunity for you to test out your independent working skills. As the magazine is in Finnish, writers need to be able to

generate readable texts in the language – it is not mandatory to have experience in magazine writing, though! The editorial staff consists of the Editor-inChief Emilia Mäenmaa, Art Director Antti Ukkonen and Sub-editor Aleksi Lintunen. They are in charge of the overall direction and looks of the magazine. However, Kylteri doesn’t come together without its team of writers, photographers and illustrators. Holders of the permanent positions in the magazine are chosen annually, but as a contributor there are no strings attached. If you are into communications, journalism, photography or illustrating and not afraid of deadlines, don’t hesitate to give a heads-up on your talent!

Once you are familiar with the study guidelines and have made your personal study plan, it would seem easy not to spare an extra thought for additional planning. However, from time to time it might be a good idea to stop for a minute, visit the course website WebOodi and check which courses are yet to be completed to finish your studies. The time it takes to finish your degree doesn’t depend only on your studying methods and planning, but also on your situation in life. The normative target time for finishing both your Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees is five years altogether, but changing life situations may swing it either way. Working, starting a family or exchange studies abroad, for instance, may slow down your studies. On the other hand, clear scheduling and goal-oriented attitude could speed up your graduation.
You study at Aalto BIZ (Aalto University School of Business), which is a part of Aalto University. Aalto University was formed in 2010 when three self-governing universities – Helsinki School of Economics, Helsinki University of Technology and the University of Art and Design Helsinki – merged into one. Today,
the university consists of six relatively autonomous schools. You’re free to attend courses, or even complete your minor studies, at any of the schools of the university. To make it easier, there are several multidisciplinary programmes available. In addition, Aalto University is continuously striving to improve collaboration between the schools. It is also possible to include an internship in both the Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, for 6 ECTS each. This is a great way to get to know working life! Studying methods used and required during your studies vary between courses and teachers. The most important thing to keep in mind is that the teachers won’t give you ready-made answers, but rather the tools to solve problems. University studies aim at teaching you how to think and how to use the skills you have attained – not always at giving exact facts. In addition to lectures, most courses include assignments, teaching in small groups or exercise sessions. Team work and case presentations are both very common ways to learn and work, and they will accustom you to working methods needed also later on in your career. Most courses end in an exam, but in many cases the exam is not the only point of evaluation – exercises and assignments may have a huge impact on your final grade as well.

BACHELOR’S DEGREE
Fortunately, most books and other materials don’t need be bought to successfully complete your studies. At the Learning Center Library in Otaniemi you will find a comprehensive collection of both domestic and foreign books and journals, including most of the books required on courses. Course books are primarily lent out for two weeks at a time, but for cases of real haste there are some books for short loan only – they can be borrowed for a night or over the weekend. Don’t forget the database of electronic journals either – it can come in handy when all the books are lent out. Other university libraries in the Helsinki metropolitan area are also worth visiting – the main library of the University of Helsinki, Hanken Library and libraries of various universities of applied sciences might carry some books our university library is missing.
Your university level business studies will begin with a Bachelor’s degree. At Aalto BIZ this lower university degree consists of common core and methodological studies, specialization and minor studies, language studies and elective studies. The Bachelor’s degree is worth 180 ECTS, which is equivalent to three years of studying, by recommendation. At the end of your first year of studies you will be asked to pick a specialization area. There are seven options to choose from: accounting, business technology, corporate law, economics, finance, management and marketing. The area of specialization will make up approximately one third of your Bachelor’s degree studies, and it also outlines the subject matter of your Bachelor’s thesis – the first step into the world of research and academic writing.

In fact, we recommend doing so! At the beginning of your studies, your tutor will explain everything you need to know about your future studies and student life. Remember that you can always ask your professor if you have any questions in mind. The professors can be contacted by email or face-to-face during their weekly reception hours – just remember to check the times beforehand! More often than not, the professors are quick to answer your questions. MASTER’S DEGREE The Bachelor’s degree might be a stepping stone into corporate life. However, you should bear in mind that most employers, especially in Finland, prefer or even require their employees to have a Master’s degree to be able to acquire higher positions within the company. For this reason it is not surprising that most business students opt to continue their studies until having finished both their Bachelor’s and Master’s degree. Many choose to deepen their knowledge in their Bachelor’s specialization area, but it is not uncommon to switch to something entirely different, either. In addition to Aalto BIZ’s Master’s programmes, there are also three interdisciplinary Aalto programmes to choose from. The two-year Master’s degree is worth 120 ECTS, and it comprises advanced specialization studies, minor and elective studies and the pro gradu thesis. Pro gradu follows the same principles of academic writing as the Bachelor’s thesis, but it is notably broader. Some students choose to get more familiar with working life while wrapping up their studies – it is possible to conduct your pro gradu research as a commission project for an interesting company. That’s basically getting paid to complete your studies!
INTERNATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES GOING ON EXCHANGE
TUTORING
Every business student at Aalto University can spend a semester studying abroad in one of Aalto BIZ’s partner universities, located all over the world. An exchange semester can be included in either your Bachelor’s or your Master’s degree – or both. Annually, about 350 students take advantage of the possibility. The application period for the next academic year’s exchange programs starts in January. Selections are made by the exchange studies committee of Aalto BIZ, where the students’ point of view is represented by the KY board member responsible for educational affairs. If none of the school’s partner universities pleases you, you can arrange a so-called ‘freemover exchange’ yourself. However, the exchange studies have to meet certain quality requirements in order to be accepted as part of your degree. The KY Foundation supports Aalto business students’ internationalization financially by giving out international exchange grants. Last year exchange grants were given to 280 outbound students for a total of 200 000 euros. The application period for the grant starts in April. There are two types of international students at Aalto BIZ. International degree students are like all other degree students at the school – exchange students, on the other hand, only spend one or two semesters in Finland, before returning to complete their studies at their home university. For students coming to Finland for the first time, the most valuable support person might be found in a tutor who knows the city, the culture and the school. Thus, tutoring is likely to result in lifelong friendships with international students. Master’s tutors guide a group consisting of both Finnish and international degree students. Tutors for exchange students work in pairs and get to lead two new groups of international visitors into their half-a-year stay.
WORKING ABROAD
INTERNATIONAL WEEKS International Weeks take place all over the world and all year round. An IW includes different excursions, fun activities, sightseeing and, of course, new friends. The idea of the concept is to make new acquaintances abroad and to learn a thing or two about their cultures. KY Foundation covers 25% of Aalto BIZ students’ travel expenses (max. 200 euros), and usually the week itself is free of charge. What is more, KY itself organizes an International Week every fall as well – and needs your help to be able to pull it off! Read more on pages 16 and 33.
Nowadays it is possible to include an internship in both the Bachelor’s and the Master’s degree for 6 ECTS each. The internship can be done abroad, and academic internships for business students are available e.g. in embassies around the world. CareerWeb, a service offered by the Aalto Career Services (into. aalto.fi/en/careerweb), is a great place to find announcements of vacancies abroad.

THREE CAMPUSES – ONE KY The year 2015 was historical, as the business students of Aalto University were, for the first time ever, spread out to three campuses: Otaniemi, Töölö and Mikkeli.
YTHS (FSHS)
OTANIEMI On Otaniemi campus, Bachelor’s students of the School of Business carry out their studies at the Undergraduate Centre on Otakaari 1, along with students of many other Aalto disciplines. If you want to meet other Aalto business students during the day, go check out KY Corner, a break room located in the U-Wing of the building. KY’s office, Espilä, and the event space Saha are both just a few minutes away from the Undergraduate Centre.
ESPILÄ Espilä is located at Konemiehentie 4, right opposite of KY’s event space Saha and about 300 meters west from the School of Business premises. Espilä is where the KY board, employees and staff of the KY Foundation work at. Espilä has conference rooms available for reservation and common working space open to all KY members to use. Don’t hesitate to drop in for a cup of coffee! When in need of KY-related assistance, turn to the KY service secretary on call. With their assistance you can, for example, buy KY products, get a KY sticker on your student card or go through the lost & found after a slightly longer and blurrier night. MIKKELI The Aalto University School of Business, Mikkeli Campus is located in the city center of Mikkeli, in the region of Southern Savonia. It offers the Bachelor’s degree programme in International Business (BScBA). The School of Business, Mikkeli Campus offers a variety of services to its students: School caféteria – Restaurant Kampus serves lunch to students and staff from Mon-Fri.
It has now been almost one year since the first batch of mursus started their studies on the Otaniemi campus. It is time to put the full potential of the Aalto community into use.
When Aalto University was formed, the vision was to create an innovation university with a great interdisciplinary community. However, the first years creating this community proved it to be a real challenge, mostly because all the schools were located on different campuses kilometres apart. Last year, however, we took a giant leap towards making this vision come true. The Bachelor’s students of Aalto BIZ moved from Töölö to Otaniemi. The Aalto ARTS as a whole will follow in 2018. This year it was announced that in addition to the TECH students, ARTS students and BIZ Bachelor’s students, also the School of Business as a whole will move to Otaniemi by 2021. This means that all the students of Aalto University will be centralized on one campus. The Aalto community, formed by ‘kylteris’, ‘teekkaris’ and ‘taikkeris’ offers great possibilities to all Aalto students, including those at KY. There are
countless events and interdisciplinary activities organized on the Otaniemi campus. A majority of these events and activities are open to all Aalto students. In the fall, KY offers various possibilities to get to know your fellow students. There are, for example, ‘Otasuunnistus’ event during the orientation week and Aalto Amazing Race in October – an event at which mursus, first year TECH students and first year ARTS students team up and compete to win our very own Aalto community Amazing Race. To make the most out of your time as a student, be sure to get to know students from outside KY as well. Explore the great possibilities on the Otaniemi campus and don’t hesitate to attend the events offered by the Aalto community. You will make new friends and get some of the best memories of your life.
Study areas – Mikkeli campus offers study rooms and computer labs, open 24/7. The premises are also home to Probba ry, the student organization of Aalto University School of Business, Mikkeli Campus. The office of Probba ry is located on the 3rd floor of the campus building (Lönnrotinkatu 5) and the Probba Lounge can be found in the basement of the building. Read more about Probba on page 18.

WHAT IS AYY? Aalto University Student Union, AYY, is your own student union. AYY brings together approximately 15,000 students of arts, design, business and technology. All students undertaking their Bachelor’s or Master’s degree at Aalto University are required to be members of AYY. Exchange students and doctoral students can also join AYY if they wish to do so. AYY provides and produces services and opportunities for its members, ranging from the student calendar and student housing to incredible volunteer positions. Tempaus2016 takes Aalto University students to every primary school in Finland! The biggest phenomenon of the year, Tempaus2016, is coming.

But what is a Tempaus? Tempaus events are a way for students to influence topical matters in a light-hearted but serious manner. The most famous Tempaus events KY has done in the past have been Finnfocus in London in 1968 and historical versions of Mursujaiset.
At AYY’s service points, you can, among other things, pick up your arrived student card or a new academic year sticker for your student card. At the Otaniemi service point you can also pick up and return keys to rental facilities.
This year the students of Aalto University are making history – everyone will get the chance to join the forces to make the biggest and most influential Aalto event ever happened. The idea is to visit all 2400 primary schools in Finland and highlight the importance of basic education and show our support to the students, teachers and the whole Finnish basic education system.

This section aims to answer the practical questions concerning housing, income and health care. Ultimately, there is no need to worry. We students are pretty well taken care of – our student union AYY, the social security institution KELA and the Finnish Student Health Service FSHS, amongst others, are here to help us.

AYY owns apartments that are rented out to students of Aalto University. However, AYY does not have adequate housing for all Aalto University students, so you should search for an apartment through other channels as well. First-year students and students moving from outside the metropolitan area have the priority in the housing queue. You can apply for housing as soon as you receive the confirmation of your place of study. A so-called ‘freshman point’ is available for AYY’s shared apartment queues. In order to receive the freshman point, you must apply for housing no later than in July or December, depending on when your studies begin.

In order to receive student financial aid, you must gain at least 5 ECTS per supported month. However, the minimum is 20 ECTS per academic year, regardless of the number of months for which you receive aid. In addition, since the student financial aid is a social benefit, your income has an effect on the amount of aid you are entitled to during the year.
Students who begin their academic studies for the first time in 2016 have 32 months of financial aid for completing the lower university degree. When students have completed their Bachelor’s degree and continue to their Master’s studies, they are entitled to 23 additional months of financial aid. However, a student can use no more than 50 months of student financial aid in total for completing both of the degrees. Further information at kela.fi/opintotuki.
MONITOR YOUR INCOME If you have a summer job or work while you study and earn more than the income limits of the student financial aid allow, you need to return the extra financial aid on your own initiative or cancel the aid in advance for the number of months necessary. Read more at kela.fi/tulot_opiskelijanomat-tulot. You should avoid using financial aid months ‘unnecessarily’, as you will not get back the months already used, even if you still have studies left. Thus, do not use your financial aid for a sick leave or a holiday! If your sick leave is prolonged, you can apply for sickness allowance. HEALTH AND WELLBEING FINNISH STUDENT HEALTH SERVICE (FSHS) The Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS or YTHS in Finnish) takes care of university students’ health. When in need, you can get help from FSHS in the areas of general, oral and mental health. You can always make an appointment with FSHS when you are in need of health services. AYY’s membership fee includes the insurance-based fee of FSHS. When FSHS is closed or you cannot make an appointment for any other reason, you can use your own municipal health centre or emergency
UniSport offers Aalto University students inexpensive sports services. UniSport has sports facilities on the City Centre Campus of the University of Helsinki and in Kumpula, Meilahti, Otaniemi and Töölö. UniSport offers, amongst other things, group exercise classes, ball games, gym and various courses. Further information at unisport.fi. 52 METROPOLITAN AREA A -50% discount is granted to students under 30 years of age if they are registered within the HSL region (Espoo, Helsinki, Kauniainen, Kerava, Kirkkonummi, Vantaa) and have the student status registered on their HSL travel card. The student discount is also granted to international exchange students residing temporarily in the regional ticket area if the criteria is otherwise met. STUDENTS AND LONG-DISTANCE TRANSPORT VR offers a student discount on long-distance train journeys. Further information can be found on VR’s website at vr.fi. The student discount of Matkahuolto is -50 % on bus journeys of over 80 kilometres. More information at matkahuolto.fi. You need to have your valid student card with you both on the train and the bus in order to be eligible for the student discount. Note that a receipt of a paid student union membership fee does not entitle you to the discount!
STUDENT MEAL SUBSIDY By presenting a valid student card or the receipt of your paid student union membership fee, you can get the student discount at student restaurants subsidized by Kela. Usually you need to pay around 2,6 euros for your lunch. There are many subsidized student restaurants in Otaniemi and the rest of the Helsinki metropolitan area. STUDENT CARD As a student you get to enjoy various discounts and benefits – but in order to be eligible, you need to proof your student status by showing a valid student card. A clear photo of your face. The photo must be in electronic format and taken directly from the front in the same way as passport photos. 2. A payment instrument to pay for the order. And we at The Finnish Business School Graduates (Suomen Ekonomit) want to be there for you from the beginning of your studies ‘till the end of your career life. The Finnish Business School Graduates, originally founded in 1935, is a central organization for graduates and students in the field of economics and business administration. It consists of 25 regional associations and 13 student societies and has over 50 000 individual members. The organization attempts to improve the success of its members as individuals. In order to do so, The Finnish Business School Graduates implements several services concerning educational, professional and social issues as well as labour market conditions, and always according to the needs of the members. On behalf of its members, the organization negotiates and concludes collective agreements concerning salaries and conditions of employment.

For me it has meant everything: from new connections to amazing events and superior services. For instance, ‘Kylteripäivät’ in January was the most interesting conference I have ever been to, and when I started my own company, I received hours of consultation from the organization’s lawyers. But most of all it is the community. Go out there, enjoy your student life and make friends for life. The board’s goal is simple: to take care that you, as a KY member, benefit from the membership. In practice this means running the on-going operations and dealing with matters related to the studies, career and free time of KY members. The board takes makes sure that the students’ voice is heard at the university and at the national level. To achieve all this, the board is supported by KY’s employees as well as by several committees and project teams. Apart from the weekly meetings where the decisions are made, the board also participates in operating the daily functions of the association. In addition, the board members represent the association in various stakeholder organizations such as the Finnish Business School Graduates (Suomen Ekonomit) and Aalto University Student Union (AYY) as well as in different organizations within Aalto University and the School of Business. The board is chosen at the end of each year by the highest decision-making body of the association, the representative council. The council gives guidance to the board by preparing an annual action plan and a budget based on which the board operates. In the long term, all these plans are based on a five-year strategy. Even though the board has great responsibilities and works full-time, the members are your average Aalto BIZ students – and they are here for you! This means that at any point, whether you have an idea or a problem, just contact the board and get the help you need. See you at Espilä!

KY’s focus of educational advocacy is on developing the quality and appreciation of the education, as well as being the voice of the students at Aalto University School of Business. Two board members, Katariina Ollari and Juho Paavola, are in charge of KY’s academic and educational affairs with the help of KY’s Academic Committee, KOVA (page 30), and the student representatives in university administration. The advocacy work is done in close cooperation with Aalto University Student Union’s (AYY, page 48) advocacy sector. Both KY and AYY work for your wellbeing. In addition to advocacy work at Aalto BIZ, KY operates also at national level. The most important actors for business students in Finland are the Na-

KY’s communications sector makes sure all the essential information reaches you in time. On the other hand, the sector is responsible for keeping the image and communication consistent throughout the association. There are diverse talents and personalities represented: KY board member Julia Österlund, PR & Press Officer Hilda Ruuskanen, Art Director Antti Ukkonen and IT Coordinator Joni Kariluoto, as well as the Editor-in-Chief of Kylteri magazine, Emilia Mäenmaa. These people make sure you receive all the relevant KY information with as low effort as possible. The KY board member also runs the two Round Tables of Communication (page 31) that gather together the people responsible for communications in committees, subcommittees and subject clubs.

COMMUNITY The community sector is responsible for making your life outside the lecture halls as enjoyable as possible. Being a student is the best time of your life, be sure to make the most of it! Photo: Petri Anttila
CULTURE… KY’s cultural sector treasures our most beloved traditions by overseeing events from the Annual Ball and Wappu to kuntis parties and lauluilta dinners. This dynamic sector is run by KY board member Ville Marchant and Secretary for Cultural Affairs, Saara Kolari. In addition to being in charge of KY’s cultural events, Ville and Saara also work towards building a stronger Aalto community and hence, communicate with other student associations’ cultural actors on a regular basis. A significant amount of time is also allotted to supporting our volunteers, especially our three subcommittees, KUJ, NESU-KY and KYSub (pages 20-21). Ville also acts as the chairman of the Cultural Committee, KUVA (page 30), the team behind most of KY’s events. KUVA is responsible for spectacles ranging from the legendary Hukkaputki pub crawl to the sparkling Boston Night, a fancy three course dinner with live music and charismatic performers. KY’s cultural scene is also tended to by various project teams (pages 32-33).

...AND EVERYTHING ELSE! Even though KY’s cultural events are guaranteed highlights of the academic year, there are a few more actors in the community sector who help make your studies unforgettable. Maija Kirveennummi, the Secretary for Clubs and Societies, ensures that the 50 clubs functioning under KY are looked after and well equipped to run their associations. If you don’t find an existing club or committee that caters to your interests, you can always consult Maija about founding a club of your own! Milla Parviainen, the board member responsible for new students, guarantees that both Bachelor’s and Master’s level students have a soft landing at the start of their studies. In order to do so, Milla and Maija cooperate with project teams such as the Tutor Committee and KY Masters’ Club, meet with Aalto BIZ personnel and offer their support to KY’s extensive volunteer network. In addition, Milla also looks out for our students’ welfare, as she chairs the Sports and Wellbeing Committee, LiHy (page 31), and supports our group of sports tutors, EnerKY (page 33). These two teams offer you opportunities to challenge both your body and mind – you don’t want to miss orientation week’s Mursu Championships or a chance to defend KY’s honor in the Autumn Classic, a rowing competition against Pykälä! Factor in KY’s sports clubs and UniSport and you are bound to have plenty of opportunities to get yourself moving!

CORPORATE RELATIONS Partnerships with companies are a key component in making KY’s wide range of activities possible, and the importance of partnerships is constantly increasing. Sales Coordinator Matilda Saarinen, member of the KY board Juhana Junttila and Sales Academy (page 31) are mainly responsible for corporate relations at KY. These people take care of KY’s corporate partners and make sure that KY can offer high quality activities and events, as well as good opportunities to get to know interesting companies in Finland. In addition, many other operators at KY are in contact with companies – subcommittees, subject clubs and several project teams take care of their own business

relations. All the corporate relations representatives of these organizations meet regularly at the Round Table meetings chaired by Juhana. KY is always seeking to find win-win situations for both the companies and the students by constantly creating new and innovative forms of cooperation. The goal is for the students to hear about the partners and their employment opportunities, while the students give valuable feedback to the companies. Continuous development is done with KY’s partners to be able to provide something new and interesting for KY members. During company excursions and through blog posts on KY’s website, KY’s partner companies introduce themselves or the industry they work in, and employees tell their own career stories. Company excursions are a great opportunity to make contacts with the business world in a way that the school doesn’t offer – a chance to make a lasting impression on possible employers, which may later on help you to stand out from the others when seeking your next summer job. In the best-case scenario, you might even leave one of these events with an invitation to a job interview. KY’s corporate relations sector provides you with opportunities – the rest is up to you.

REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL The representative council is the highest decisionmaking body at KY. It makes sure that KY is acting in the best interest of its members. Photo: Joel Leinonen
The representative council consist of 21 members and 42 deputy members. The council decides on all major issues of the association and thus determines what KY is, what it stands for and what it is actively doing at any given time and in years to come. In spring 2016, the representative council has been working on e.g. creating a brand strategy and changing KY’s official name, as well as on the future location of KY’s activities in Otaniemi. As the representative council operates at the heart of KY, it is indeed a great viewpoint to what is happening at KY! Council meetings are usually held once a month, either in Otaniemi or Töölö. The meeting invitation is posted at kyweb.fi. Although all the final decisions are made in these meetings, they are just part of the council’s work. The issues dealt in the meetings are prepared and discussed beforehand. Being a member of the representative council is not only serious business though. The group also organizes occasional parties and other casual free time activities for the council members. The representative council is elected every two years – the next election will be held in fall 2017.

Every KY member may run for member of the council. A new chairman, on the other hand, is elected annually. Every KY member is eligible to run for this position as well.

KY Foundation focuses on helping students achieve their professional, study-related and extracurricular goals at Aalto University School of Business. KY Foundation supports students’ leisure activities, culture and sports events and studying by, for example, awarding subsidies to associations and international exchange grants to students. The foundation is led by an executive board, of which the majority are students, including the chairman Valtteri Ahonen. The operations of the foundation and the decisions of the board are directed and supervised by a supervisory board that consists of members of KY’s representative council (see pages 70-71). The day-to-day operations of the foundation run through the Managing Director Antti Melander.

750 000 € IN GRANTS AWARDED ANNUALLY KY Foundation gives out yearly awards, grants and subsidies. In addition, the foundation gives students and their organizations project funding on a continuous basis. In recent years, the foundation has granted aid e.g. to students going abroad for an exchange semester, as well as to clubs and associations that provide students with services or events. Additionally, scholarships were granted to students achieving academic excellence, while participating in extracurricular student activities. The total amount of grants awarded annually to students and student organizations is roughly 750 000 euros. KY Foundation’s grant portfolio is under continuous development, so be sure to check out the foundation’s website at ky-saatio.fi for the latest information. KY Foundation owns two properties in the Kamppi district in Helsinki: the traditional KY Building on Pohjoinen Rautatiekatu and a former school building located on Arkadiankatu. The seven-story KY Building serves the business students by offering spaces in which KY and various other associations can operate and organize events. These spaces are located on the third floor and in the basement of the building. The foundation has rented two buildings in Otaniemi for the use of business students. Espilä, located at Konemiehentie 4, serves as KY’s main office, but it also offers spaces to students and their organizations
for different purposes. Saha, located right across the street from Espilä, serves as an event venue for bigger meetings and activities. Kylteri, the independent student magazine issued four times a year is published by KY Foundation. The magazine can be found on stands around Otaniemi and Töölö campuses and in electronic format at kylteri.fi. In addition, the foundation provides a legal service for students and their organizations. KY’s legal advisor Matti Marttunen can be found at the KY Building on Wednesdays from 16:30 to 18:30.
PROJECT FUNDING In 2015, the KY Foundation launched a new form of funding for different kinds of projects. This project funding is aimed at student groups, associations and individuals implementing a separate and distinctive project. The project can be, for example, a new event or an idea that enhances learning – basically anything that benefits the business students at Aalto University. Application for funding is open continuously and applications will be processed once a month (excluding the summer months).
