GOLF MATTERS NZ GOLF CONFERENCE & EXPO

8 – 10 AUGUST, 2022

August 8-10, 2022, Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre, Christchurch, Canterbury

Welcome to 2022 Golf Matters – NZ Golf Conference & Expo Kia ora On behalf of the New Zealand Golf Industry Council Board, it is my pleasure to welcome you all here to Christchurch and Te Pae. Golf Matters 2022, NZ Golf Conference & Expo is an initiative of the New Zealand Golf Industry Council (NZGIC) whose members include Golf New Zealand, the PGA of New Zealand, Golf Managers Association, New Zealand Golf Course Superintendents Association, plus the Tourism, Retail and Course supplier sectors. As we gather for the first time ever as a collective, some parts of the industry are in the Covid honeymoon period, for some it will now be over. The difficulties of the current economic climate will start to hit home as pressure goes on disposable income in some areas. For other sectors, things are just ramping up, I’m thinking specifically of our friends in the Tourism and Resort sectors - we wish them every success this coming summer. This is our chance to share ideas and collaborate like never before, I encourage you to have an open mind, and to share your ideas and experiences, as a large group we are stronger than ever before. Christchurch, New Zealand’s ‘Garden City’ is an excellent and exciting destination with the choice of venue supported by the collective arms of ChristchurchNZ and Tourism NZ, who were very proactive in seeking agreement, reached at the end of 2021. Timing of that agreement coincided with the opening of the $475million new convention centre, Te Pae. A ceremonial opening was held on the 17 December 2021 where dignitaries and media were given ‘their first look’ at the 1400 seat auditorium, 24 meeting rooms and banquet areas for 1800. It is a pleasure to support Christchurch and be looked after by Te Pae and their extensive team for Golf Matters 2022.

To the sponsors, we cannot thank you enough, it may be a cliché, but we would not be here without your support! Delegates, these companies are investing in your industry even if indirectly to you personally; wherever possible we should look to return the favour with our support. Te Pae – “A meeting place” – meet, enjoy, learn and welcome in the post Covid era – thank you all for your support – in so many ways. Nga mihi Sam Sullivan Chairman, New Zealand Golf Industry Council nzgics@gmail.com / phone 027 231 7548 New Zealand Golf Industry Council Sam Sullivan (Brittain Wynard) Dean Murphy (Golf New Zealand) Andrew Whiley (PGA of New Zealand) Richard Nauck (GMA of New Zealand) Spencer Cooper (NZGCSA) John Woodham (Powerturf) Ryan Brandeburg (Golf Tourism New Zealand) Denise Langdon (PaR nz Golfing Holidays)

This brochure was sent to print on Wednesday 3 August – with an overview of all delegates, the valuable sponsor list and all speakers registered at that time. Any changes and corrections will be included on the full electronic version of Golf Matters 2022 – refer www.golfmatters2022.co.nz and advised at Te Pae, 8-10 August.

8 – 10 AUGUST, 2022

The Venue The New Zealand Golf Industry Council (NZGIC) is pleased to announce that an agreement has been reached with ChristchurchNZ and Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre to host Golf Matters 2022, New Zealand Golf Conference & Expo. Christchurch, New Zealand’s ‘Garden City’ is an excellent and exciting destination with the choice of venue supported by the collective arms of ChristchurchNZ and Tourism NZ, who were very proactive in seeking agreement, reached at the end of 2021. Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre Timing opened the $475million new convention centre, on the 17 December 2021 in a special ceremonial opening. Invited dignitaries and media were given ‘their first look’ at the 1,400 seat auditorium, 24 meeting rooms and banquet areas for 1,800 in a small but appropriate presentation. Te Pae is simply stunning and a world class facility that is paired well with this world-first industry initiative. Te Pae – ‘a meeting place’, is an architectural and social landmark designed as a welcoming heart in the centre of Christchurch. The centre is planning to host over 100 events in its first year of business, with more than 70,000 visitors to the city. The contribution to the Christchurch is economy expected to be in excess of $60m. Funded by the Crown as an earthquake rebuild project, the endeavour has taken 3.3 million hours of labour to build. Te Pae Christchurch is located along the banks of the Otakaro Avon River and close to Victoria Park – a tranquil, natural environment in the very heart of the city. The building overlooks the Avon River, Victoria Square and Cathedral Square. While large for Christchurch, on a global scale it is a boutique sized convention centre. The essence of the city and the contributing rivers encompass all aspects of the design: hospitality rooms known as the River Rooms, named after Canterbury’s iconic braided rivers with the 43,000 exterior tiles representing Canterbury’s braided rivers. The river theme is carried through to the shape of the windows and the carpet design. Delegates will be overwhelmed by the reception area that has a 2-tonne marble reception desk, timber columns, and an illuminated artwork called Hana, designed by Ngai Tahu sculptor Loni Hutchinson.

Since finishing his apprenticeship with Pete Dye in the early 1980’s, Tom Doak has designed 42 golf courses over a 35year career. Seven of those courses are currently rated among the top 100 courses in the world. His experience in New Zealand began with the creation of Cape Kidnappers for the American developer Julian Robertson. Construction started 20 years ago, and the course opened for play at the end of 2003. He returned with Ric Kayne in 2012, to build a true links course through the dunes that were revealed. The praise for Tara Iti Golf Club continues to exceed his wildest imagination. The success of Tara Iti has led to a new resort project down the beach, the new Te Arai Links. Bill Coore’s South course at Te Arai has just opened, and Tom was back in New Zealand from February through April working with his team on the greens and bunkering for the North course, which will open in 2023.

Karen Lunn Karen is a former professional golfer who is now the CEO of the WPGA Tour of Australasia. Karen played on all of the major womens’ tours between 1985 until 2013, and was the winner of 14 international professional tournaments in 10 different countries, including the 1993 Women’s British Open. Karen also represented Australia four times as a professional in major international competitions. Karen served on the Players Council on the Board of Directors for 14 years, 10 of which were as Chair. She has worked as a TV commentator for Sky Sports in the UK and UCOM in Germany, and has been a mentor for many of Australia’s young female amateur and professional players. Karen joined the WPGA Tour in September 2013, and also sits on the Australian Golf Industry Council and the Rolex Women’s World Rankings Committee.

From 2001 to 2005, he was in New York to study with Frank Rossi at Cornell University. The broad scope of his research on grasses around the world led to his collaboration with scientists from PACE Turf to create the MLSN guidelines which are applicable to turf in all climate zones, or as he says, “any grass, anywhere.” You can read more about Micah’s unique take on tending turfgrass in his book, A Short Grammar of Greenkeeping, as well as on his website, www.asianturfgrass.com.

She is also working on a newly signed book deal of her memoir, appropriately titled Troublemaker, detailing the ongoing legal battles of retaliation and discrimiation with Golf Channel. It is set to be released in Spring of 2023.
