GOLF TRAVELLER ISSUE12

Welcome to the PaR nz Golfing Holidays hosted 2020 Luxury South African Golf & Safari! South Africa 2020 will feature a selection of the best of golf in South Africa, a journey on the deluxe Rovos Rail Train and your chance to see wildlife up close not only in the internationally renowned Kruger National Game Reserve, but also at the exclusive Gondwana private game reserve. Building on the success of this year’s tour, one of our exciting additions to the 2020 line-up is to start the tour with a two-night stay at Johannesburg at a boutique-style five-star hotel with premium security. It is a delightful place to unwind, and just perfect for playing Glendower – a very private members course. Our 19-day / 18-night journey takes us from Johannesburg to the Kruger National Game Reserve. We then travel in luxury on the Rovos Train to Cape Town taking in the famous Robben Island, Table Mountain and vineyards. Relax at Gondwana, at an exclusive private game reserve before four nights at Fancourt, our grand finale. We play nine rounds of championship golf on tour including golf at Glendower, Leopard Creek, Steenberg, Pearl Valley, Arabella, Fancourt’s Tri-challenge (The Links, Montagu and Outeniqua courses), along with Pinnacle Point. In total, we have six nights at deluxe game reserves on safari, and a good chance to see Africa’s Big Five game animals – lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros and buffalo – up close and beautiful. All wildlife photographs in our promotion were taken by Denise from PaR nz on a pre-tour visit in February this year to provide you with an authentic glimpse of the Africa we’ll encounter. The 2019 tour sold out in weeks so if you are interested –

please reserve your place now. We’d hate for you to miss out. South Africa 2020 Tour Safari Overview This is an unforgettable and exclusive bucket list adventure. You are invited to experience a PaR nz Golfing Holidays hosted tour, which will include some of the best South Africa has to offer. On your journey, you will enjoy breath-taking beauty, cultural diversity, mouth-watering cuisine, world-famous wines, unique golf experiences and the opportunity to come face to face with ‘Africa’s Big Five’ while on safari in the African bush. This promises to be a journey filled with memories. A journey in which you are guaranteed to fall in love with the people, the beauty and the diversity that South Africa presents. The safari experience is mind-blowing. Awake at sunrise to head into the wild on your private African safari with your field guide and tracker to discover a world usually reserved for the screen during ‘Animal Planet’. You’ll find yourself in an environment that is as old as time, where nature’s rhythm is the only governor. Two safaris take place each day – in the morning and late afternoon / early evening. This is when the wildlife is most active, and the temperature more moderate. There are also walking safaris, which give you a completely different perspective of the bush. Your senses will be on full alert. You will feel the grass and stones beneath your feet, touch leathery leaves as you stroll beneath the trees, smell the musky scent of wild animals in the vicinity, almost taste the sweet grass of the veld, and hear the crack of a branch – indicating

that you’re not alone. Walks generally take place after breakfast and last approximately 1 ½ to 2 hours, depending on the fitness level of guests. In summer, due to the heat, walks may be incorporated into the morning game drive before heading back to the lodge for breakfast. The Golf The golf is some of South Africa’s best. We start with a tee booking at Johannesburg’s exclusive Glendower Golf Course. Leopard Creek, at the entrance to Kruger National Park Pearl Valley, is our second course on tour. There is also the chance to play Leopard’s Creek stunning 9-hole course. We go on to Steenberg and Pearl Valley in Cape Town for our fourth and fifth rounds. Then Arabella, which is rated the best course in Western Cape, surrounded by the Simonsberg and Drakenstein Mountains. Pinnacle Point – a Peter Matkovich and Darren Clarke masterpiece is simply breath-taking! We finish with the Fancourt Trilogy – Montagu, Outeniqua, and The Links. Fancourt was voted the number one golf resort in the world at the 2018 IAGTO Golf Awards. These are all highly-rated courses that include four designed by none other than the ’Black Knight’, South Africa’s Gary Player, three by the acclaimed South African course architect Peter Matkovich, and a highlight for any golfer to play a Jack Nicklaus design. Glendower • Rated four-star plus • Designed by Charles Hugh Alison “It’s one of the best I’ve ever played. Very visual, really well bunkered and extremely well set up. We don’t get to play on many traditional courses anymore and I was delighted.” This is a quote from Paul McGinley, a previous Ryder Cup captain after playing in the 2013 South Africa Open Championship. And this is where we start our South Africa 2020. Glendower Golf Club is an exquisitely designed, highly-ranked parkland golf course in Gauteng, South Africa. Currently ranked number two in South Africa and number one in the city. It is known as one of the country’s true classics and is associated with the second oldest

Open in the world. American Fred Wadsworth won in 1989, and it has hosted the South Africa Open a further two times since then. Home to the Sunshine Tour’s BMG Classic since 2009, the course boasts lovely kikuyu fairways, with numerous bunkers and water coming into play on 11 holes. Accuracy is essential. Leopard Creek • Rated five star • Designed by Gary Player Working closely with the Kruger National Park and nature conservation authorities, the Leopard Creek Golf Course was specifically designed to blend in with the surroundings. It provides sophisticated leisure amenities in an undisturbed natural environment. Innovative architectural and landscaping techniques ensure that the golf course is in harmony with the environment, while lakes and small streams have been diverted through the development to create scenic vistas and interesting golf strategies. Sightings of crocodile, hippopotamus, antelope, buffalo and wild boar are commonplace, either on the course itself or next to the river running alongside several holes. Golfing hazards take on a new dimension at Leopard Creek for much of the water is home to hippos and the creature for which the adjacent river is named – crocodile. To single out a signature hole is brave as there are many memorable holes. Not for the faint-hearted, the par-five 18th coming home, has an island green that presents a tricky shot over water. Pearl Valley • Rated four-star plus • Designed by Jack Nicklaus The Pearl Valley Golf Estate is surrounded by the Simonsberg and Drakenstein Mountains and bordered by vineyards with the Berg River water hazard running through it. Pearl Valley is the latest South African addition to Jack Nicklaus’s repertoire of signature-designed courses worldwide. Nicklaus has stayed true

to his design principles by working closely with nature. Here, he presents a golf course that fits in with its environment. This flat and largely uninterrupted terrain brought freedom to develop hole strategies, making this a golf course the golfer must think their way around. In its design and planning detail, the course is unique. Steenberg • Rated four-star plus • Designed by Peter Matkovich Located near the Steenberg Mountains (mountains of stone) the winery of the same name is the oldest wine farm in the Cape Peninsula, dating back to the days of Simon van der Stel. The history of the area is very interesting. Governor van der Stel allocated the original land grant for the farm to Catharina Ustings Ras. Catharina was a controversial character of pioneering spirit who, as young widow, had left her native Germany to undertake the perilous journey to the tip of Africa. Though she settled on the farm in 1682, an official mandate was only granted to her in 1688 “to cultivate, to plough, to sow and to possess” the land. She first named it Swaaneweide – the feeding place of swans. Today we have a challenging course, that is always wellmaintained on relatively flat terrain. An open parklike design – you will enjoy. Known for its impressive array of what were originally termed hazards, it now has distinctive penalty areas. Arabella • Rated five star • Designed by Peter Matkovich The Arabella golf course has a demanding and exceptional design that offers a challenging experience to all levels of golfers. A parkland design with wide kikuyu fairways and bent-grass greens, the exceptional overall conditioning of this course ensures that it is consistently rated the best course in the Western Cape. Both leading South African golf publications

www.parnz.co.nz

often include Arabella in their top five South African courses. Choosing a signature hole proves to be an extremely difficult task as all the holes are well-designed with spectacular views. Pinnacle Point • Rated five star • Designed by Peter Matkovich; assisted by Darren Clarke The Pinnacle Point Golf Course is something truly special for the discerning golfer. This 18-hole championship golf course was designed by well-known South African golf course architect Peter Matkovich, who opened the course together with top Irish Tour Professional, Darren Clarke, in November 2006. Darren Clarke, who was also involved with many aspects of the Pinnacle Point course design, has said that Pinnacle Point is “the best golf course on the planet”. This clifftop Fynbos Golf Course inspires the golfer to play this challenging layout with a level of respect due to its dramatic views and breath-taking terrain. The 72-par layout is characterised by seven majestic holes that line the Indian Ocean rock cliffs, four of which are played over ocean and cliff. The Fancourt Trilogy • Rated five-star plus • Designed by Gary Player No golfing trip to South Africa is complete without a round or two at Fancourt. The Fancourt Golf Resort is the only golf resort in South Africa with three astonishing golf courses, all originally designed by Gary Player. The Montagu course is a muchcelebrated parkland course and is a former number-one ranked golf course in South Africa. Play is restricted to members, their guests and hotel guests, so there is ample time and space to savour the Fancourt golfing experience. It is, however, always

a good idea to book in advance to ensure that you get your desired tee time. Fancour t also boasts a world-class golf academy, with outstanding practice and warm-up facilities. The Fancourt Outeniqua Golf Course as part of South Africa’s premier golfing destination lies at the foot of the majestic Outeniqua Mountain in the heart of the world-famous Garden Route district. This beautifully manicured 18-hole parkland course is a course of rare distinction, similar to its sibling the Montagu course with top-of-the-range conditioning and a setting that takes in mountains, water and wildlife. Legendary Grand Slam golfer Gary Player designed this majestic 18-hole parkland layout at Fancourt. The Outeniqua course is like its sibling course The Montagu in terms of character, its challenging design and fine conditioning which will ensure an excellent test for all levels of golfers. The Links at Fancourt is without doubt the most impressive piece of golf design and construction ever in South Africa. Fancourt owner Dr Hasso Plattner, who took a very hands-on function in the creation, commissioned a golf course that not only would be a thorough test for every golfer but would also rank among the world’s top courses. Gary Player’s design team spent months studying the classic links courses of Scotland and Ireland and then, armed with inspiration from the best that those countries had to offer, embarked on the ambitious task of recreating some of their finest holes to make a genuine links test on what was once an airfield. Golf Digest USA recently ranked The Links, the 34th best golf course in the world. And that’s the golf line up – come join us on the PaR nz as we head off once again on safari! 2020 Vietnam and Cambodia 27 January – 11 February 2020 Such a rich and unique culture engulfs these two beautiful countries. Join us in Vietnam and Cambodia to discover the timeless charm, the bustling day to day life of its delightful people and to sample fresh fabulous food while playing some world-class golf. The tour star ts in Siem Reap with a special welcome Cambodian style, two rounds of golf and a sunrise tour to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Angkor Wat. We then head to Hanoi and onto Ha Long Bay with a round scheduled for one of Vietnam’s most recent golf additions – FLC Golf @ Ha Long Bay. Six wonderful days on China Beach in Da Nang includes four rounds of golf, a Vietnamese Cooking Class and time for shopping in historic Hoi An. The tour finishes in Saigon – our last game of golf we travel up the river to the tee, we visit the Cu Chi tunnels and, final night celebration dinner. This 15 night / 16 day tour is 5 star throughout and limited to 26 golfers only. For full tour details contact denise@parnz.co.nz Have a look at this exciting course line up…. Play Cambodia Golf Courses in Siem Reap and see the 8th Wonder of the World: the Temples of Angkor Wat. We welcome you to present day Cambodia, a peaceful and welcoming country that has retained the style of its former French colony heritage and mixed it with indigenous cultural charm to completely redevelop itself and regain its proud title as “The Pearl of Asia”. We start our golf challenge in Siem Reap, the main golf destination in Cambodia. Siem Reap is a small former French colonial town that has been visited by foreigners mainly to see the 1,000 year old cradle of the Khmer civilization and the Temples of Angkor Wat. There are three international standard 18-hole courses each with their own variety and challenges for everyone from amateurs to professionals.

The best course is Angkor Golf Resort – a challenging and well-maintained Nick Faldo design. The six-time major winner, Nick Faldo himself, received a blessing from local monks and then opened the golf course in December 2007, his first golf course in Cambodia. The Angkor Golf Resort brings Cambodia squarely onto the international golf destination map. Golf here is a fair test for all players and requires thinking and strategy on every hole to score well. The strategically placed bunkers and water hazards are tricky, but easily seen from each tee box. The greens have plenty of subtle undulations, and they reward and encourage a variety of approach shots. We also take on the challenge of the Phokeethra Country Club, home of the Asian Tour’s Johnnie Walker Cambodian Open. The Sofitel-managed Phokeethra Country Club is one of the best courses available in Cambodia. The golf course hosted the 2009 Johnnie Walker Classic and 2010 Cambodian Open. Major renovations in 2018 have returned course standards to those set when first opened. Our first game of golf in Vietnam will be at Hanoi’s Kings Island Golf Resort – a 54-hole golf resort designed by Robert McFarland (USA). Scenic lakeside views aplenty! The golf resort lies on the shores of the Dong Mo reservoir 36 kms from Hanoi. At only 45 minutes drive from the capital, Kings Island Golf Resort is a high quality and convenient choice to include in any Vietnam golf package. In a uniquely Vietnamese touch, access to the course is by boat. The island-situated site comprises 350 hectares of land and 1,500 hectares of waterfront. Then we look to golf in Ha Long Bay with tee times reqested at the new FLC Ha Long Golf Resor t. Tee times don’t get confirmed here until much closer to the time but hopefully the wait will be worth it? FLC Ha Long Bay Golf Club is a stunning course overlooking Ha Long Bay which opened for play in

August 2017. Twenty minutes from Ha Long City and three hours from Hanoi, the 18-hole championship Schmidt-Curley designed layout offers stunning scenic ocean views over the famous UNESCO World Heritage Site. The golf course sits above the old town of Ha Long Bay and overlooks the spectacular limestone karst-riddled bay. The dramatic terrain offers a drastic departure from the sandy dunes of coastal Vietnamese golf sites. Several greens have a stunning backdrop of Ha Long Bay, viewed from high above, framed by rock outcrops and mature native vegetation, punctuated with pine trees. Above a series of ridges, the course features dramatic, sweeping views and substantial elevation changes. FLC Ha Long Bay Golf Club is worth a visit if nothing else for the magnificent views of the bay. Our line-up of golf in Da Nang is impressive. Da Nang, Hoi An, and Hue are connected to each other by new coastal roads and tunnels. Together they make up Vietnam’s Golf Coast. Vietnam’s recognition as an up-and-coming golf destination is no secret, but the Vietnam Golf Coast ups the ante even further. Da Nang dates to the early 14th century when the area was settled in a small collection of hamlets in central Vietnam. In 1954 with the division of Vietnam into the North and South, Da Nang became part of South Vietnam, and in 1965 was the location of the first landing of US forces in Vietnam and aptly coined “China Beach.” Nowadays, the area is home to one of Asia’s best beaches, many world-class resorts, and Vietnam’s best golf courses. For example, Ba Na Hills Golf Club and the BRG Da Nang Golf Resort are ranked continuously among Asia’s leading golf clubs. Hoi An, with its lovely, traditional wooden shop-homes, was set up in the 16th century. It was revived in the 20th century to commemorate the long history of Vietnamese international trade. Wandering through its protected old town is like being transported back to a time when Hoi An was Vietnam’s most important trading port. For those looking for a glimpse of the real Vietnam, or just a fun night out, Hoi An mixes old world charm with modern and vibrant nightlife. Hoiana Shores Golf Club is Vietnam’s first Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed course and is located 15 minutes from Hoi An’s center. We will have four games here including Da Nang, Hoiana Shores, Montgomerie and Ba Na Golf Course. Ba Na Hills Golf Club is 25 minutes inland from Da Nang at the

foothills of the cable car station leading to Bana Hills. The IMG managed course is the first Luke Donald designed course not only in Asia but the world. BRG Da Nang Golf Resort, designed by Greg Norman, opened in 2010 and immediately leaped to fame being recognized as one of the 15 best new courses in the world by USA GOLF magazine. Da Nang Golf Resort has achieved many awards, amongst them 2011, 2012, 2013 best golf course in Asia by the readers of Asian Golf Monthly as well as the 2012 Best Golf Course in Vietnam by USA Golf Digest and the 2014 IAGTO Diamond Award. The Montgomerie Links, located just off historical Da Nang Beach and minutes from Da Nang City, is a stunning 7090 yard, par-72 golf course. The course rated as one of Asia’s ten most elite courses by the 2012 Forbes Travel Guide as well as most recently voted as ‘Vietnam’s Best Championship Course 2013’ by the Vietnam Golf Magazine. Since then yearly awards are common for Montgomerie. Hoiana Shores Golf Club is the first Robert Trent Jones Jr. II golf course in Vietnam and is located on the shoreline south of Hoi An in central Vietnam. Located on the shores of the Eastern Sea, approximately 8km south of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hoi An, known as ‘The City of Lanterns’, the golf club is part of a major destination development which harbours the ambition of becoming one of the most compelling golf experiences in Asia. With Hoiana Shores Golf Club scheduled to open in the second half of 2019, the new destination will be home to a selection of luxury hotels, entertainment outlets, residential communities, retail complexes, as well as the world-class golf club, and is earmarked to become a major attraction for

tourists globally. We finish our 2020 Vietnam and Cambodia Golf and Cultural Tour with Saigon’s Long Thanh Golf challenge. This is a beautiful Ron Fream design considered the South’s #1 course. The Long Thanh Golf Club offers 36 holes of golf in the former rice paddies and scenic countryside surrounding Saigon. Both the Hill and Lake course are well maintained throughout the year and the golf courses are a longtime favorite among locals. Many expatriates and Vietnam golf visitors prefer Long Thanh Golf Club over its more famous neighbor Vietnam Golf & Country Club. The Hill Course features rolling fairways and large undulating greens. Large oil palms frame each hole. The Lake Course is characterised by many high lipped bunkers and water hazards on almost every hole to catch errant shots. Both courses feature paspalum grassed fairways and tee boxes. Putting greens use Tifdwarf Bermuda grass which can roll anywhere from 8 to 10. This combination of grasses matches other top courses in the region. The Long Thanh Golf Club and Residential Estate have also spared no expense to build an elaborate clubhouse. The locker and changing rooms might be the plushest in Saigon. Ask for a shoe shine after your round. The main restaurant serves a fine selection of both Vietnamese and Western food for golfers after their rounds in both indoor and outdoor setting. Overall, golf at Long Thanh is an impressive experience and is sure to please all Vietnam golfers. For all details and to reserve your place on this tour – please contact denise@parnz.co.nz
