Over the last 165 years this charming community nestled 15 miles north of Atlanta has grown from a tiny trading post to the bustling technology hub you see today. Alpharetta is not your typical local government, and we work hard not to be. The City of Alpharetta approaches government with a more entrepreneurial mindset and a singular focus on making good things happen …. fast. Our ability to succeed with that approach requires a strong relationship between elected leaders and professional staff, an employee team that supports one another, and a shared commitment to service and the community we serve.

The City of Alpharetta operates under the strong mayoral form of government. The mayor is the CEO, and the legislative and policy making authority is vested in the Mayor and our six-member City Council. All seven of these elected officials are elected on a non-partisan basis; serve four years, at-large terms; and each has a vote on all policies, ordinances, rules, the annual budget and other matters that come before them.

The Mayor and Council appoints a City Administrator who carries out the policies and implements the goals established by the City Council and manages day-to-day operations to provide services effectively and economically.

Located approximately 25 miles north of the City of Atlanta, Alpharetta occupies a land area of roughly 27 square miles and serves and estimated 122,000 (daytime) and 65,799 (nighttime) populations. The 165-year-old municipality, one of the fastest growing cities in the nation, has experienced tremendous growth that is fueled by its exceptional quality of life, diverse population, and a strong economic base that is led by Fortune 500 corporations and nearly 700 technology businesses. From trails to fiber, innovation to investment, Alpharetta is creating the connections that drive the modern economy and fuel diverse, rewarding lifestyles. Alpharetta is a community where vibrant culture, dynamic businesses and a thriving Main Street combine with forest paths and inviting

and a jail, now a thriving city lives. The 2010 U.S. Census Bureau report revealed Alpharetta as the 6th-fastest growing city in the nation, which is no wonder when you consider the high-quality education and the number of businesses choosing to relocate to Alpharetta.

The city has won numerous financial awards, and has been named one of the safest cities in Georgia, according to SafeWise. In 2021, Newsweek awarded Alpharetta as one of the “Best Places to Live on the East Coast” along with Niche 2020 as one of the “Best Places

to Live in Georgia”. Residents, business owners and visitors agree there is always an excuse to have a celebration, whether movies at a park, food truck gatherings, parades, art or music festivals, races or holiday gatherings. No matter what time of year, there is some kind of upcoming event that excites the Alpharetta community.

Alpharetta benefits from a transportation network that drives business, fuels economic engines, and connects people.

Highway access to Alpharetta includes four interchanges within the city limits to GA 400, with construction soon to begin on a fifth. Public transit connectivity is provided by the Metropolitan Atlanta Regional Transit Authority (MARTA) which plans to expand its service to Alpharetta via Bus Rapid Transit and dedicated transit infrastructure in the median of GA 400. This will further improve Alpharetta’s connectivity to the Atlanta Region and to the world via Hartsfield –Jackson International Airport.

A city cannot be a leader in the innovation and technology economies without a world-class education system. Alpharetta is a leader with some of the top-performing public schools in the nation, outstanding private school opportunities and strong connections to universities and technical colleges. The graduation rate for Alpharetta’s public high schools is 97%, with students boasting an average ACT score of 24.5 and 70 percent of students participating in AP courses. Georgia State University operates one of its campuses here, and Alpharetta also benefits from the presence of other

High school students in Alpharetta and surrounding areas can opt to a STEM-focused campus called Innovation Academy built at the old Milton High School site. This is one of two Fulton County STEM-focused campuses being offered in Fulton County. See accompanying article on page 36.

There are also plenty of shopping and dining opportunities, which seem to be expanding at a rapid pace. New developments are constantly popping up around the city, providing residents and visitors with new restaurants, retail shops and entertainment venues. Avalon, since its opening in October 2014, has brought 86 acres of dining, shopping, small businesses and residences to downtown Alpharetta.

North Point Mall is currently undergoing a major facelift that will provide the residents and visitors of Alpharetta to yet another exciting place to dine and play.

The Alpha Loop, is an innovative and efficient way to connect people to activity centers, parks, and jobs by a network of multi-use trails that provides safe alternatives to driving as well as other recreational benefits. These multi-use paths connecting Avalon to Downtown Alpharetta, currently involves two interconnected routes including a threemile inner loop and a five-mile outer loop that will link Downtown Alpharetta, Avalon, and the Northwinds area located at Haynes Bridge Road and S.R. 400.

Alpharetta has acres devoted to walking trails, playgrounds, baseball, soccer and football fields, and even a dog park. There are community gardens, arboretums and swimming pools as well. One of the most popular outdoor choices in Alpharetta is the Big Creek Greenway, which spans about nine miles through beautiful scenery and connects to a mountain biking trail.

Alpharetta was incorporated on December 11, 1858. The town was created to become the county seat of the newly formed Milton County. The territory comprising Milton County had once been a part of the Cherokee Nation and beginning in 1831 this area became the southern portion of Cherokee County, one of the largest counties in the state. Cherokee County’s size created a hardship for some of its southern residents who had to travel to Canton, Cherokee County’s seat, to conduct county business, a trip that could take up to four days for the round trip. To accommodate those residents, parts of Cherokee, Cobb, DeKalb, Gwinnett and Forsyth Counties were combined to create Milton County.

On April 12, 1858, the Milton County Inferior Court ordered the purchase of 60 acres from the Manning and Camp families. Twelve and one-half acres were retained for county use and the remaining forty seven and one-half acres were divided into lots and sold to the highest bidders. These lots were used to establish the downtown business district and residences for settlers who were drawn into the new town for commercial or other reasons. Before the year was over construction had started on a new courthouse and jail. The 1860 Federal Census for Alpharetta listed six carpenters, three blacksmiths, two brick masons, two shoemakers, two tailors, two grocers, two hoteliers, two livery stable employees, one ditcher, one doctor, one postmaster, one sheriff, and one constable.

The new government had barely three years to become established before the Civil War began. Milton County sent two representatives to the secession convention in Milledgeville, then the Georgia state capitol. These two men, Jackson Graham and J. C. Street voted against secession but they were in the minority. Soon, five infantry companies were raised locally and soldiers were sent into battle. These troops fought in some of the war’s most deadly engagements including Manassas, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chickamauga, and Atlanta. Milton County troops suffered 244 casualties.

In March 1865 the Superior Court reported a cash balance of minus $7.50 in the county treasury. Since there were no funds for education, Milton officials emphasized the importance of Sunday Schools in educating children. By 1871, the Male and Female Academy opened in a new building located in front of the current city hall. The school operated until the January 1922 when a new Milton School opened on Canton Street. During the 1890s, primary schools, funded by local citizens, opened in communities throughout the county, Ocee, Warsaw, Hopewell, Crabapple and Summit among them. Junior high schools were built in Birmingham and Newtown.

Alpharetta’s economy was cotton based for decades. Farmers grew cotton and downtown businesses opened to seed, fertilize, process, sell and ship the product. In 1901, the Webb

Alpharetta & Old Milton County History Museum

Local historians worked for over four years to open the Alpharetta & Old Milton County History Museum, which includes stories, photos, and memorabilia contributed by many local residents. The Museum was funded by the City of Alpharetta and developed in partnership with the Alpharetta & Old Milton County Historical Society which provided historical research and many of the artifacts on display.

Guano Warehouse opened for business in the landmark Cotton House building on Milton Avenue. At various times three gins operated in Alpharetta, two in Crabapple, one in Webb and Ocee.

Most, if not all of the existing downtown commercial buildings, particularly those on the west side of South Main Street and on the west side of Old Roswell Street, were built between 1902 and 1914. During this period the cotton business flourished as did the downtown businesses. But in the 1920s and 1930s the cotton market was destroyed by the boll weevil, drought and the Great Depression. The price of cotton fell from 35 cents per pound in 1919 to 6 cents per pound in 1931. The two banks closed, cotton brokers could no longer offer seed and fertilizer to farmers on credit, and the farmers barely survived.

By then Milton County was near bankruptcy. Teachers were forced to take pay cuts, and even then were not paid on time. Roads were in deplorable condition. County employees were underpaid. One local resident, the late Louie Jones, described the situation this way, “Schools during the Depression were nothing but shacks in the fields and not an inch of paved roads to get to them.” So in 1931, Milton County residents voted to become a part of Fulton County, its rich neighbor to the south. The vote was 213 for the move and 59 against. The change took place on January 1, 1932. Soon, a cafeteria, central heat and plumbing were installed at Milton School. Alpharetta’s main street was paved, school bus service was instituted, and pay for county employees was doubled.

Farmers shifted to livestock and truck farming in the 1930s and 1940s. The demand for food by U. S. troops during World War II led to the growth of the poultry business in much of North Georgia, including the Alpharetta area. The poultry industry provided local residents with a stable source of income for many years even long after the war ended. Two other developments provided jobs for Alpharettans. The Bell Bomber Plant, now Lockheed, opened in Marietta in1943, and the General Motors Assembly Plant in Doraville began operations in 1947.

The opening of Georgia Highway 400 in the 1970s and the growth of the Windward Development in the 1980s drew more residents and businesses to the area. Reasonable home prices, a moderate climate and superior schools made Alpharetta and surrounding communities excellent places to live, work and play.

In May of 2018, the City of Alpharetta celebrated the opening of the Alpharetta & Old Milton County History Museum, located inside Alpharetta’s City Hall. The History Museum covers the history of Alpharetta, from its earliest days as Cherokee Indian territory, through its remarkable emergence as one of the nation's most vibrant high tech cities.

PAINT THE TOWN - Alpharetta Plein Air

Arts Alpharetta hosts annually, in partnership with the City of Alpharetta and the Alpharetta Convention and Visitors Bureau, a 5-day fabulous plein air painting competition entitled Paint the Town. The French term plein air means "out of doors" and refers to the practice of painting entire finished pictures out of doors.

The 2022 invitational began on May 18th with a workshop with artist Jill McGannon and several days of painting on location around the City of Alpharetta. The event culminated on Saturday, May 22nd with a Wet Paint Tent sale at the Alpharetta Farmer's Market, a Quick Draw competition and the opening reception and awards ceremony at the Alpharetta Arts Center that evening.

This event allows spectators to watch the artists in action at well-known locations throughout Alpharetta including downtown as well as City parks, gardens and more. Multiple opportunities are available to purchase original art created on site during the event and exhibition. Proceeds from the event will directly fund two Arts Alpharetta initiatives: the ongoing public art program and “Take Out Art” which supplies free art kits to children in need in our community.

The front cover of this year’s Guidebook showcases the exquisite painting created by Peter Ho. This masterpiece is called God’s Light which is an oil on canvas painted during the Paint the Town 2021 invitational. Peter completed this masterpiece during the Quick Draw Competition in less than two hours and won First Place in the Professional Division.

Over $3,000 in cash awards were given in 3 categories: Professional, Novice, and Quick Draw/Paint. Small works (studies) as well as larger pieces were on sale at Alpharetta Arts Center. Growing the Tech Ecosystem in Alpharetta

Tech Alpharetta is an independent, 501c (6) nonprofit organization whose mission is to help grow technology and innovation in Alpharetta. There are nearly 700 tech companies located in the city of Alpharetta today, and Tech Alpharetta, which significantly contributes to Alpharetta’s continued growth and recognition as a thriving tech hub, is the organization that supports and connects this vast tech community.

Tech Alpharetta helps to: recruit and retain tech companies, grow new tech startups and innovation, create jobs, and grow the next generation of skilled tech workforce for the many employers in the Alpharetta and north metro region.

Tech Alpharetta also focuses heavily on giving back to the community through its Women’s Forum, which recently launched its STEAM Mentoring Program for female high school students. This program connects female technology executives with female high school students, to serve as student mentors for the school year. Tech Alpharetta’s Women’s Forum partnered with Fulton County Schools’ Innovation Academy high school in Alpharetta to launch this mentoring program.

Tech Alpharetta connects the tech community and effectuates its strategy through its board of directors, by operating a thriving startup incubator and its Women’s Forum, and by hosting year-round, locally based, educational, and tech thought leadership events for technology executives.

It has created nearly 1000 new jobs for the city of Alpharetta and nearly 2000 for the state of Georgia. “Tech Alpharetta provided us with so much valuable support, from introductions and connections, to mentoring and resources, along with a welcoming community of tech entrepreneurs,” states Jason Perez, cofounder and CEO of 2022 startup graduate YARDZ. “Headquartering here in Alpharetta was the obvious choice for us.”

This off-leash dog park and bar is FREE for humans to enter and enjoy and no pup of your own is needed! The park has a membership system for dogs ensuring the park is as safe as possible. Entrance to the park for pups ranges from a daily $10 option to monthly and annual memberships. Members will be able to enjoy all Fetch locations under their membership dues. All dogs are required to have up-to-date vaccinations on file (DHLPP – including Lepto, Bordetella, and Rabies) and be spayed or neutered if 8 months of age or older.

Alpharetta Symphony Orchestra

CULTURAL ARTS

The Alpharetta Symphony Orchestra (AlphaSO) exists to bring together musicians and audiences of all ages around the goal of making and enjoying music together and building the musical arts community through performances and education to all. We strive to serve the artistic needs of our community and the greater North Atlanta area. We perform chamber and orchestral literature, regularly collaborating with local artists and arts groups.

The Alpharetta Symphony Orchestra is a non-profit 501(c)(3) orchestra based in Alpharetta, Georgia. The AlphaSO was founded in 2014 by Drs. Eric and Dawn Hawk. The AlphaSO organization consists of an Adult Orchestra (AlphaSO), Youth Orchestra (AlphaYouthSO), and a Chamber Orchestra (AlphaCO). We also offer Chamber Outreach Ensemble Concerts in schools and senior homes to those who cannot attend regular performances. https://www.alpharettasymphony.org/about

The Alpharetta Arts Center includes a light-filled main gallery, over 3,000 square feet of floor space with high ceilings and mobile walls. Exhibitions rotate approximately every 2 months, generating 6 - 7 exhibits per calendar year. Exhibits may be based on theme, subject matter, medium, or featured artist. Open calls are marketed on a national platform. Exhibitions often include receptions, artists’ talks, and occasional interactive displays. The Arts Center Gallery is a creative and welcoming space, where artists – local, regional, and national – exhibit their works for display or sale.

The Studio Gallery

The Studio Gallery is along the studio halls of the Alpharetta Arts Center. Exhibits rotate approximately every 1-2 months, generating 8-10 exhibits per year. Studio Gallery exhibits may include works by students and class participants, instructors, local artists, or special interest arts groups.

In keeping with the goal of making Alpharetta the most connected city in Georgia, the City of Alpharetta is currently working on many projects that support the great infrastructure that allows businesses to connect to the world and Alpharetta residents to connect to all parts of the City. These future projects are ongoing throughout the City and builds upon this concept.

Some of the projects that will further allow our businesses and residents to better connect in the future are:

The Gathering/Haynes Bridge Road:

A residential and commercial development currently under construction that will bring this area along in the same vane as the new North Point project.

Alpha Loop Expansion:

The groundbreaking ceremony on the $15.2 million section from Old Milton Parkway to Northwinds slated for October, 2022.

“The Alpha Loop at its core is an economic development initiative. The synergy that a highly walkable environment creates cannot be matched. Connecting pedestrians to economic nodes in an experiential manner drives business development large and small. The Alpha Loop offers recreational opportunities for office users at North Winds and connects pedestrians to two award-winning mixeduse developments—downtown and Avalon.”

First introduced as a multi-year project in 2016, the first segment of the Alpha Loop was opened in April 2020 to connect Downtown Alpharetta and Avalon, two of the city’s most popular destinations. That segment also provides pedestrian and bicycle connectivity to three separate park spaces totaling 10 acres. When completed, the Alpha Loop will connect to the Big Creek Greenway which, itself, spans 20 miles from Roswell into Forsyth County.

North Point Mall:

Trademark Properties has submitted plans for the redevelopment of the 80-acre property currently home to North Point Mall into the area’s next walkable live-work-play district that will be rebranded as simply “North Point.” The submitted plans call for a large portion of the mall to be demolished, while the remaining exterior facades and interior spaces would be renovated and opened out to a public realm with large green space. The plans also propose large areas of existing surface parking being transformed into new streets, green spaces, trail way links, and buildings and will tie into the Alpha Loop.

Life Sciences:

Earlier this year, Alpharetta City Council amended the code to allow for up to 50% lab space/light manufacturing in all office zones in the City of Alpharetta. The goal of this tactic was to keep the city from being a hinderance from a zoning standpoint to these technology businesses.

Plans include elevated walkways and overlook spaces, pocket parks, a tunnel, lake and streams, along with a bike sharing system and public art.

South Main and Windward:

The City is also working on exciting plans for the South Main Street area of Alpharetta as well as the area along Windward Parkway to the north. See the Alpharetta City website for all the details www.alpharetta.ga.us.

Alpharetta High School is ranked in the top 2 percent nationally and ranked number 12 in Georgia according to “Newsweek’s Best High Schools” in 2022 and has won numerous awards in academics, athletics and the arts. Alpharetta boasts some of the best educational opportunities in Georgia and is part of the Fulton County Public School System, which is rated “One of the Top 100 School Districts in Places You Can Afford” by Money Magazine. Fulton County is the fourth largest school district in Georgia with 108 schools with more than 89,450 students, 10,900 full-time personnel, including more than 6,900 certified personnel. There are 59 elementary schools, 19 middle schools, 19 high schools (includes two open campus high schools), 10 start-up charter organizations and one full-time virtual school.

Four of the top high schools in Georgia are located in or around Alpharetta. Being a part of the Learning Zone 7, Alpharetta public

schools boast high test scores, rigorous academic curricula and competitive athletic programs. Many educators and influential leaders advocate that true excellence in schools is measured by what students do with their lives after they graduate. On that note, Alpharetta and surrounding area high schools are on the right track.

In a 2022 education ranking issue published by U.S. News & World Report (see chart below), 5 out of 7 Alpharetta or surrounding area high schools made the top 20 list of the best high schools in Georgia, and earned a place among the top 500 high schools in the nation. This is pretty impressive given that the U.S. News & World Report rankings include data on more than 24,000 public

high schools in 50 states and the District of Columbia and over 414 high schools In Georgia. These 24,000 high schools were ranked on six factors based on their performance on state assessments and how well they prepare students for college. Fulton County’s SAT scores continue to exceed the state and national average. Additionally, seven Fulton County high schools rank within the top 15 highest scoring schools in Georgia, with the majority of them located in the Alpharetta and surrounding community. According to the College Board, Fulton has more schools with high SAT performance than any other district in Georgia.

Going on the ideology that the main hope of a nation lies in the education of its youth, Alpharetta high schools are doing it right when it comes to laying a foundation that fosters a love of learning and a curriculum that teaches students to think. Outstanding teachers, exceptional leadership and governance, a challenging and stimulating curriculum, high test scores, dedication to the arts, competitive athletic programs, a vibrant cocurricular life evidenced by a variety of clubs and organizations, and ample opportunities for community involvement demonstrate why Alpharetta’s educational efforts work hard to take its students onward and upward.

Alpharetta recognizes that high quality early childhood programs are not only great for students and their parents, they also serve as great economic stabilizers and equalizers. Good schools bring more residents (and jobs) to the area which helps to increase the availability of taxpayer money to fund community improvements. Alpharetta’s exceptional primary and secondary schools are led by educated, talented, and forward-thinking administrators, teachers and support staff who focus on curriculum diversity and pay much attention to early intervention protocols to foster academic growth from the ground up.

All seven of Alpharetta’s or surrounding area middle schools, including Amana Academy, show exemplary test assessment rates. According to GreatSchools, collectively, these middle schools continue to demonstrate a proficiency rate as high as 99% for all core subjects.

Based on these stats, ratings and test scores, it is abundantly clear that throughout the school day in Alpharetta, there is a whole lot of learning, thinking, and discovery going on to propagate a student body awesomely prepared to take on life’s challenges long after high school graduation.

Fulton County has 19 high schools. Innovation Academy is a STEM magnet high school that provides an educational experience that will help push students to be creators and problem-solvers for a continuously changing world.

WHAT WE BELIEVE

We believe that effective learning cannot be isolated from the world around us. To truly learn something, people need to be engaged in a real-world environment where they learn to work in teams, communicate effectively, and practice critical analysis and creative problem-solving to understand how the knowledge they gain in class actually helps them after leaving our school. We believe that students learn best when they get to do and redo. Students need to try things, experiment and test; then reflect and try again.

WHAT WE DO

Our problem-based learning curriculum allows students the freedom to actively engage in their education. They will work in teams to solve complex problems, like providing safe drinking water to people in disaster zones. These projects allow students to gain deep understanding of learning standards by seeing them applied in a real-world setting.

Requiring students to complete a career pathway in healthcare science, engineering, or information technology allows students to study STEM standards through the lens of some of the most cutting edge career opportunities in our modern world. This connects core content class objectives with practical applications.

Students will complete a self-selected culminating project which ensures students will be able to apply the knowledge they gained in their course work with the less-tangible, but equally important skills such as teamwork, communication, critical thinking and creative problem-solving. Employers at all levels claim these skills are most important for students to develop. Practical application and mastery of all these skills is essential to be a leader in today’s workforce.

HOSPITAL EXPANSION

Construction on an extensive expansion project was recently completed at Emory Johns Creek Hospital. Two new floors have been added to the existing facility, including 40 beds. The new space will help balance patient demand, improve staff efficiency and streamline care. The new area officially opened in June 2021.

CARDIAC AND VASCULAR CARE

The cardiologists at Emory Johns Creek Hospital are committed to providing comprehensive heart and vascular treatment options, including preventive cardiology and the evaluation and management of patients with known or suspected heart disease and/or peripheral vascular disease. Our specialty-trained cardiologists create individualized treatment plans for patients with various types of heart failure. The Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory provides a variety of cardiac procedures including angioplasty and stent placement, delivering on average less than 60-minute doorto-balloon times, far below the national goal of 90 minutes, for severe heart attacks. The Alpharetta Department of Public Safety is a unique agency that includes three divisions of public safety services under one organization – 911, fire and police. From our beginnings as a police department and a fire department to the combination into a Public Safety Department in 2004, we strive to meet our mission every day — enhancing the quality of life for those that live, work, and play in the City of Alpharetta.

Receiving nationwide recognition for its performance, Alpharetta’s 911 Center is known as one of the top 911 centers. In 2016, it became one of the first in Georgia to implement the “Text to 911” capability and it is the first center in the state to incorporate NG911 technology, ensuring more accurate location information. In 2017, the Center received one of the rarest honors to be given to any 911 center – the prestigious International Academy of Emergency Dispatch (IAED) accreditations for its police, fire, and EMS operations.

The Center continues to maintain this Tri-Accreditation by reapplying every three years and is one of the few emergency dispatch 911 centers worldwide to hold all three accreditations. In 2021, the Center added an additional award when they became accredited through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.

ALPHARETTA: LIVE, WORK AND PLAY TO THE FULLEST

Alpharetta is a city positioned as one of the most admired live, work and play communities in the country. And its humble leaders are still hungry for more.

The city has a resident population of just over 66,500 people. During the day, more than 100,000 people come and go, working in its many expanding corporate campuses rooted in the tech and financial services industries. And in the evening, everyone gets to play in

the electric nightlife buzzing up and down Old Milton Parkway from the high-end shops, bars and restaurants in Avalon, to the packed party scene on main street near City Hall.

Avalon is one of the largest and most celebrated mixed-use developments built anywhere in the country over the last 10 years.

It is centered around a top-notch movie theater overlooking a large open gathering area used

in the summer for concerts and picnics, and in the winter for ice-skating. The east side is bookended by high-rise offices housing among other things, Microsoft’s regional headquarters, and the Hotel Avalon. The west side runs out into smaller, high-end offices and $1 millionplus homes and condos. In between are highend retail shops, restaurants and a spectacular Whole Foods.

Downtown Alpharetta is a mix of the old city on one side, where old infrastructure has been smartly converted into modern restaurants and offices, and the new city on the other, which includes a newly constructed cluster of cityblock style buildings hosting restaurants, shops and residential units.

Residents, daytime employees, and visitors from neighboring cities and beyond all venture to Avalon and Alpharetta’s downtown district to mingle and enjoy a night out on the town. There is a mixture of everything one could want, from a high-end restaurant like Rumi’s Kitchen in Avalon, to the downtown hangout Truck & Tap which boasts a large beer collection and a different food truck every night serving up the goods out back.

Alpharetta was one of the first suburban cities in the country to fully incorporate fiber-optic cables into its standard infrastructure. Laying miles of cable along Old Milton Parkway and Windward Parkway back in the 1990’s, Alpharetta was then thought of as the most connected city in the country. And out of those cables sprouted headquarters, regional headquarters and data centers of some of the largest tech companies in the world. As the needs of employees changed, these campuses have morphed over time where some of them

also include their own dining halls, workout centers and spas. And all take advantage of being close to Avalon and the city center.

Since Alpharetta leapt onto the high-end home scene years ago after the development of Georgia’s first gated community, Country Club of the South, the city is now awash in gated golf communities, swim and tennis communities and more dense condos and high-end apartments. The city today boasts just about any style of living you might be looking for.

And if you are looking to get active, Alpharetta has that too. The City’s Big Creek Greenway runs along Big Creek and is a paved, multi-use trail spanning the entire city connecting south into trails in Roswell, and north into trails in Forsyth County. And it is in the process of building out its Alpha Loop, a multi-use trail that will run throughout the city, connecting downtown, to Avalon, to the business districts and to the Big Creek Greenway.

The Recreation and Park’s Department award-winning facilities for youth sports are complimented by the Wills Park Equestrian Center, which hosts regional and national horse competitions. It is currently undergoing a multimillion-dollar renovation to attract some of the country’s top events.

Also under a renovation of sorts, is the North Point Mall area. As shoppers preferences have turned more toward outdoor gathering places like Avalon, the city has worked closely with the mall owners and surrounding property owners to repurpose the area. Once seen as a place for high-end shopping with some Class A office centers, the area is being transformed to also include a much larger residential component. The mall is being converted to include apartments and offices, whose residents will in turn visit the retail stores in and around it. The city has plans for more multi-use trails to make it easier for residents to walk and bike throughout the area.

Alpharetta’s leaders have proven that they are not resting on their laurels and are always looking for way to improve. At the Alpharetta Business Association’s annual State of the City breakfast, Mayor Jim Gilvin talked about initiatives like realigning the city’s Economic Development Department with the Community Development Department “Because the two go hand-in-hand.” He talked about intersection improvements, road widenings and a new bond referendum that passed and will open up millions of dollars to capital improvement projects throughout the city.

Old Rucker Park is a 10-acre future park site, and the home of the Old Rucker Farm. The farm sits on approximately 2 acres within the future park, and is the headquarters of the city’s Community Agriculture Program. The farm grows vegetables, flowers, and herbs, and includes an outdoor classroom and a community garden. The Old Rucker Farm follows the principles of regenerative organic farming, and promotes care of the soil and plant management in accordance with natural systems. Removal of invasive species and replacement with native plants throughout the property is a key component to the educational and physical activity on site. The Farm hosts dozens of agriculture and nature based workshops annually, and grows over 5,000 lbs. of food per year, most of which is donated to the local food pantry.

Wills Park Equestrian Center was built in the 1960’s and is a unique feature to the city. The center hosts a variety of annual equestrian and dog agility shows, along with several special events each season, many of which offer free admission. Equestrian Center activities draw spectators of all ages, and are held rain or shine. The Equestrian Center includes eight shed barns with covered aisle ways, along with a total of 300 stalls. The covered arena is 150 by 350 feet, housing its own show office, announcer’s booth, viewing room, restrooms, raised bleacher seating and picnic area. Five outdoor arenas, with all-weather equestrian footing, share a show office and announcer's tower, as well as a meeting room for civic clubs and other organizations. A concession stand with restrooms are centrally located, and a bathhouse complete with showers, is located in the stable area. Wills Park Equestrian Center offers ample paved parking areas with camper hook-ups for 30 campers. Horse owners can purchase a daily or annual riding pass at the Equestrian Center and use the facility in accordance with park regulations and riding pass rules. Wills Park Equestrian Center is also available for private corporate rentals throughout the year.

Wills Park offers numerous stunning examples of native tree species along a paved walking trail, which winds around and through the park. Many street trees,

parking lot trees, border and accent trees have been planted throughout the history of the park including 24 specimens from green ash, elms, and dogwoods, to oak, cherry, persimmon, cottonwood and more. The Alpharetta Arboretum at Webb Bridge Park

This park abounds in natural beauty with trees and flora native to Georgia featuring upland hardwood forest, conifer forest typically found in moist ravines and bottomland. Walk the mile and a half trail through the park and experience “A Walk Through Georgia”, spotting 23 trees that represent all three of Georgia’s geographic regions: the mountains, the Piedmont and the coastal plain.

The AlphaLoop is a dynamic and transformative project for Alpharetta; one that will connect our neighborhoods to activity centers, improve mobility, promote healthier lifestyles, and enhance the quality of life of everyone who lives, works, and spends time in our awesome community. At its core, the AlphaLoop is a multiuse path looping through Alpharetta and tying to amenities like the Big Creek Greenway, Downtown Alpharetta, Avalon, and the North Point District.

But, the AlphaLoop is more than simply a path. It will, itself, be a destination . . . really, a series of destinations that helps to define and convey to visitors the unique characters of the districts and neighborhoods that make up our community. The idea of the AlphaLoop was introduced in 2016, and it is a long-term project that, like the Big Creek Greenway, will probably take a number of years to complete. Type of Trail: Out and back; easy

Access Points: Alpharetta YMCA at Preston Ridge Road, Haynes Bridge Road, North Point Mall, Kimball Bridge Road or Marconi Drive, Union Hill Park

Characteristics: 12 foot wide paved concrete path that meanders through the deciduous woods along Big Creek; wildlife such as blue heron, deer, ducks and Canadian geese can be observed in this preserved water setting. A soft mulch trail encircles a large wetland between Haynes Bridge Road and Mansell Road. Ideal for biking, walking and inline skating along the creek. Dirt mountain bike trails are located on the east side of the creek 2/5 mile south of Webb Bridge Road. The Greenway is an investment in the future of Alpharetta for citizens to coincide with nature. Restrooms available.

How Long Is The Big Creek Greenway?

Total length of the Big Creek Greenway, from Windward Parkway to Mansell Road, is approximately 18 miles.

Where Can The Greenway Be Accessed?

Alpharetta YMCA: From Old Milton Parkway, go 1/4 mile north on North Point Parkway to Preston Ridge Road and turn right toward the Ed Isakson/Alpharetta YMCA.

Haynes Bridge Road: From North Point Parkway, go 1/5 mile south on Haynes Bridge Road. A parking lot is on the east/left side of Haynes Bridge Road.

North Point Mall: Driving northbound on North Point Parkway halfway between Mansell and Haynes Bridge Roads, find the greenway sign directly across from Haverty's Furniture. Parking is located in a wooded area. Restrooms are available at that location. 800 feet south of this entrance is the North Point Village retail center.

Walk behind the shops to the stairway that leads to the wetlands mulch trail. Note: The stairs are not A.D.A. accessible.

Kimball Bridge Road: Rock Mill Park, located 1/4 mile southeast of North Point Parkway, has Greenway parking and public restrooms. This area is prone to flood during heavy rains.

Marconi Drive: Follow Marconi Drive off of Windward Parkway to reach a small parking area at the northern end of the Greenway.

Union Hill Park: Located off Windward Parkway and Union Hill Road. Public restrooms, improvements to park scheduled to begin in late 2022.

Is The Big Creek Greenway Complete?

The Alpharetta portion of the Big Creek Greenway is complete. Improvements at Union Hill Park include connection of the Alpharetta Big Creek Greenway to the Forsyth Big Creek Greenway starting in late 2022.

What Can You Do To Help?

• Please stay on the trail and stay off the berm that separates the concrete path from the creek.

• Keep the greenway litter free. Hold your expendables until the first available litter can.

• Respect other users and types of uses. Bikers: Please watch for darting children! Speed limit is enforced on the trail.

• Be a steward of the Big Creek Greenway. Please use the See.Click.Fix. app on your phone to report any damage such as fallen trees.

• Financially support Greenway maintenance. Maintaining the linear park costs more than its construction. In addition, the City would like to add more amenities, such as a formal flower garden and a children's play areas. Visit www. alpharetta.ga.us for more information.

Bike Alpharetta Inc. is a 501c3 non-profit community organization that began in 2011. Members are local residents and business leaders who generously volunteer their time and talents throughout the year to advocate and to educate for improved cycling facilities in Alpharetta. BIG CREEK GREENWAY

The Big Greek Greenway in Alpharetta, a 12-foot wide concrete meandering path under deciduous trees, was expanded in 2021 to a full nine miles! It now connects the Roswell section that passes under Mansell Road to Union Hill Park, with a new underpass at Windward Parkway. The greenway offers an ideal setting for cycling, walking, jogging, in-line roller blading. It even provides access to the city’s only mountain bike trails, Mt. Adams. Bike Alpharetta is proud to have produced an updated digital and print map of the Greenway, with support from the City of Alpharetta, Alpharetta Convention & Visitors Bureau and Tracy Morton-Harry Norman Realty.

BICYCLE FRIENDLY COMMUNITY

Bike Alpharetta is proud to support the City of Alpharetta as a bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community, a national designation first received in 2018. This recognizes Alpharetta for its investment in facilities, education and outreach to better enable and inspire people to ride bicycles, be it for recreation or transportation.

Volunteers make the wheels turn at Bike Alpharetta. Members have committed to keeping Cumming Street free of litter in downtown Alpharetta as part of the Adopt-A-Mile program.

Throughout the year we host Beginner Rides, Senior Spokes rides, Bike to School Day, ZEN Rides from Jekyll Brewing Taproom, and more. And with support from local bike shops, community partners and generous donors, Bike Alpharetta continues to manage the Bikes For Kids program each fall to provide new and renovated bikes/trikes to North Fulton Community Charities for Toyland in early December.

BIKES FOR KIDS

Since 2007, Bikes For Kids has provided 4,310 bicycles, tricycles and scooters, as well as 1,620 new youth helmets, all free of charge to NFCC for Toyland and families in need.

Once bicycles and tricycles are collected at local bike shops each fall (see the website for details), then all are cleaned/repaired on ONE DAY in December, which we call Domestique Day. In addition to youth bicycles and tricycles, Bike Alpharetta uses monetary donations to purchase bike parts and new helmets, as it is a Georgia law that children 15 years of age or younger must wear a helmet when operating a bicycle.

Start your tour at the History Museum, covering the history of Alpharetta, from its earliest days as Cherokee Indian territory, through its remarkable emergence as one of the nation’s most vibrant high-tech cities. A special part of the museum features a stories kiosk where visitors can enjoy interviews with Alpharetta’s most interesting citizens. Hours: Monday-Thursday, 8:30am- 5:00pm; Fridays, 8:30am to 4:30pm. Free admission.

JONES HOUSE | 1914

50 S. Main Street

The craftsman style home was built for Will Jones and his wife May Jackson Jones at a cost of $515.00. Mr. Jones owned and operated Jones Grocery which was located across the street on the corner of South Main Street and Milton Avenue. Mr. and Mrs. Jones and their son George were the only family ever to occupy the house, which after the couple’s deaths became a commercial property.

MILTON COUNTY COURTHOUSE | 1895

2 S. Main Street

This was the Courthouse of Milton County at the time it merged with Fulton County (1932). Created in 1857, the county was named for General Homer V. Milton (War of 1812), though some claim it was named for John Milton, first Secretary of State of Georgia. The courthouse was demolished in 1955. The existing building is a replica of the historic courthouse.

FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF ALPHARETTA | 1905

44 Academy Street

In 1903, a group of women who met weekly for prayer and Bible study began collecting offerings. From these collections, the women purchased a sixty by one hundred foot lot and began construction of the First Baptist Church. The project was completed in 1905 and was located on this site.

J.J. WEBB AND SONS | 1910

21 N. Main Street

The two-story brick building housed Shirley Brothers store, Milton County Bank, Buren Weatherford Grocery and Bates Grocery. C.P. Brady and Sons purchased it in 1934 and operated a Chevrolet dealership, gasoline station and garage.

ALPHARETTA FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH | 1834

69 N. Main Street

Methodist circuit riders held camp meetings here in the early 1830s and a meeting house existed as early as 1834. In 1871, Isham Teasley donated land where the brick chapel now stands. A white frame church was there until 1931.

BOB AND LIZZIE MANNING HOUSE | C. 1911 10 Cumming Street

Bob and Lizzie Tatum Manning moved into this Prairie-Craftsman combination style house in 1918 and remained there until their deaths in 1967 and 1977 respectively. The home still retains its original hardwood flooring in all six rooms, fireplaces and mantles. The front porch columns were removed, and the porch enclosed in glass in the mid-1980s when the house became a commercial property.

NORMAN HOUSE | 1910 18 Cumming Street

The six-room Queen Anne-style cottage has pine floors and fireplaces with original mantels and tiles. Cotton broker Clifford Pierce Norman, wife Nancy Lee Shell Norman and their three daughters lived there.

LEWIS-MANNING HOUSE | 1895 40 Cumming Street

Colonel Tom Lewis built the five bedroom Queen Anne-style house. Siblings Tom H., James H. and Annie Manning lived there 1905-1953. Alpharetta Mayor Sim Manning and his wife, Sarah Payne Manning, moved there in 1948.

B.F. SHIRLEY HOUSE | C. 1910 112 Cumming Street

This Queen Anne-style style home built by B.F. Shirley in 1910 used a Sears, Roebuck & Co. house pattern. Features include a nine-room interior, veranda, and exterior stairs leading to the second floor. Renovations have been made, but the original building structure has not been altered. The Alpharetta Woman’s Club purchased the house in 1962 and paid the bank loan with funds from community projects.

NEW PROSPECT CAMPGROUND | C. 1835 116 N. Main Street

Several springs and proximity to westward routes made the campground a suitable overnight stop for travelers and a place for settlers to camp until land could be obtained for homes. The site became known as New Prospect. Later, a log building was constructed for a school and church.

MANNING MERCANTILE | C. 1910

20 N. Main Street

James H. and Thomas H. Manning operated the store in a wooden building that burned in 1902. It was replaced by a one-story brick building that later housed the U.S. Post Office, Bates Grocery, Cowart Shoe Shop, Cook Shoe Shop and the Alpharetta Welcome Center. A second story was added in the 1990s.

R.J. WEBB BUILDING | 1907

Corner of Milton Avenue and Highway 9

R.J. Webb built the two-story brick Webb Hotel, later known as the Alpharetta Hotel. Residents included Milton County court attendees and school teachers. Businesses included Norman and Trammell General Merchants, U.S. Post Office, Alpharetta Bank, Gordon’s department store and Talmage Burgess Grocery. The building was razed in 1971.

WEBB GUANO HOUSE | C. 1901

21 Milton Avenue

R.J. and J.J. Webb built the structure on property purchased from James Madison Dodd. The Teasleys bought the property in 1911 and built the Teasley’s Warehouse portion. Later occupants were Q. A. Wills’ cotton warehouse and chenille factory, Lad ’N Dad Slacks, and The Roswell Company. Frances Byers established the Cotton House Furniture store in the 1970s.

ORIGINAL MILTON HIGH SCHOOL | 1922 86 School Drive

Milton School opened on this site in January 1922 to serve students in grades 1 through 11. A 12th grade was not added until 1950. When Milton County merged with Fulton County in 1932, the school received major upgrades including central heat, indoor plumbing, a cafeteria and school bus transportation. In the 1930s, students in the Future Farmers of America also built a log cabin on campus to use as a clubhouse. Before the school was razed in 2017, the log cabin was relocated to a City Park on

Milton Avenue. When GA 400 opened in the 1970s, Alpharetta’s student population quickly outgrew the aging Milton facility. In the 2005-2006 school year, a new, modern Milton High School opened on Birmingham Highway. The original Milton building served as an alternative high school for several years before finally closing in 2017.

FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA LOG CABIN | 1935

200 Milton Avenue

Members of Milton High School’s Future Farmers of America built this rustic cabin of hand-hewn logs. Teacher P. L. Elkins provided seed money and project oversight. Alpharetta merchants and farmers furnished other supplies. The cabin was once a center for social life and was relocated to this site in 2018 when the original Milton HS campus was demolished for a new school.

RESTHAVEN CEMETERY | 1860

90 Milton Avenue

In December 1860, the Milton County Inferior Court gave two acres to the citizens of the county to be used as a graveyard. In May 1903, Milton County conveyed the Alpharetta Cemetery Lot, now four acres, to Members of the Town Council and their successors. The lot was to be used as a general burial ground under the supervision of the Town of Alpharetta. This is the final resting place for many of the founders of Milton County and the Town of Alpharetta. The earliest recorded burial is that of Susan Camp Garrison, born 1822, died 1861. The cemetery property had previously been owned by Susan’s father, Arthur T. Camp.

DODD HOTEL | C. 1870

120 Milton Avenue

Dodd Hotel was owned by James Madison Dodd, 1828-1895. A businessman and Milton County constable, he operated a livery stable and barn on the north side of the street. The two-story hotel boarded cotton traders, drummers, court attendees and teachers. Dodd’s wife, Sara Ann Wynn Dodd, prepared meals. The hotel operated until the 1940s.

OLIVER-WATERS-MCCOLLUM WAREHOUSES | C. 1910

Originally the three buildings faced the National Highway, now Old Roswell Road. A brick facade was added in the 1970s. In 1909, John A. Oliver constructed the two-story Oliver warehouse. Prior to 1914, D.P. Waters constructed the Waters warehouse that connected the Oliver and McCollum structures. The McCollum warehouse was built around 1909. The only known elevator in Milton County was installed here and still exists.

J.A. Oliver’s general store operated until 1920, followed by the grocery stores of Jones, Lively and Talmage Burgess. In the mid-1950s, Phillips Variety Store opened. In this block were the Teasley, Johnson and Moore stores, John M. Martin Grocery, and establishments owned by the Devore, Mayfield, Waters, Thomas, Shaw, Kirby, Goswick and Reese families.

ALPHARETTA BUSINESS DISTRICT

29 S. Main Street

Buildings south of Jones Alley housed the A.G. Carroll store, Shirley Brothers Mercantile and Milton County Bank (c. 1910), Jones Merchandise (c. 1914), Teasley Ford Motor dealership, Q.A. Wills Merchandise, Louie E. Jones Funeral Home (c. 1940), Barnett Brothers (c. 1950) and Parsons Hardware. The Webb Gin operated behind the complex (early 1900s).

ALPHARETTA BUSINESS DISTRICT

Alpharetta was formed in 1858 and a thriving business district soon developed. Many businesses had two entrances – one facing the Milton County Courthouse on Norcross Street, (now South Main Street) and the other facing National Highway, (now Old Roswell Street). The cotton gin operated behind this building. The cut through was called Gin House Alley. On June 26, 1902, a fire destroyed much of the town. Most of the lost buildings were replaced with brick or stone construction.

WATERS HOUSE | C. 1880

This Colonial Revival structure has served as the home of numerous early city and county officials, physicians, and business owners since the 1890s. Residents include the McLesky, Foster, Oliver, Jones, Robertson, Waters and Garmon families. There have been changes to the exterior including the addition of brick columns and the enclosure of one of the side porches. The Waters family lived here during the first half of the 20th century. Mr. Waters owned the Alpharetta Drug Store and was the book agent for Milton County Schools.

SKELTON-TEASLEY HOUSE | 1856

61 Roswell Street

The Greek Revival-style home was built for the family of Dr. Oliver P. Skelton, physician, postmaster and Ordinary of Milton County. His son-in-law John I. Teasley, a cotton planter, subsequently occupied it. The house sits on one of the highest points in Alpharetta.

MANSELL HOUSE | 1910

1835 Old Milton Parkway

The six-room Queen Anne-style clapboard farmhouse was built by Robert Mansell for his wife, Maude Dorris. The Mansells were primarily cotton farmers. Originally situated on the family farm, the house was donated by the Herman Miller Company to the City of Alpharetta and moved to its current location in 1993. The Mansell House is operated by the Alpharetta & Old Milton Historical Society.

MEDLEY

MEDLEY is the 3rd round of sculptures for Alpharetta’s Outdoor Exhibit (Fall 2022 - Summer 2024) displayed in Downtown Alpharetta. The City of Alpharetta engages Arts Alpharetta as curator for these sculptures, seeking artists’ entries for a juried temporary outdoor exhibition that extends from the City Center and into city parks.

MEDLEY is comprised of an eclectic collection of artworks connected through vibrant colors, varied textures, and implied sounds. On behalf of the City of Alpharetta, Arts Alpharetta curated sculptures that were energetic in their design so a sense of movement could be felt like listening to a song. The five sculptures are mingled with other permanent pieces in the city to create the Alpharetta Arts Walk Tour.

Liquid Sunshine is a medley of materials - an ordinary paint can and a human face covered with the paint. It also speaks to creativity, with a medley of ideas pouring from the source of the inspiration. Alfano shares, “Turn towards the sun and all shadows will fall behind you.” (Inspiration from poet, Charles Swain, c. 1874)

This sculpture pays homage to the revival of the green revelation in travel. The only sounds heard by the bikers are the sounds of wind and their innermost thoughts. The viewer can stand back and look at this sculpture and remember the joy of bicycling and be inspired to return to a quieter time.

Allura Nathan Pierce

Stainless steel, acrylic Allura plays on the colors of the surrounding environment. As the metallic stainless steel reflects the hues of the landscape, the neon ribbon flows to add motion for the viewers eye to follow, creating a medley of movement and color.

The sculptor usually incorporates gateways that invite viewer participation. He believes gates and arches give viewers a literal entry into the work, a portal to an aesthetic journey.

The Alpharetta Farmers Market is also known for being dog friendly and on any given morning, you’ll see breeds from large to small. Of course, dogs must be on a leash and owners are responsible for the behavior of their dogs and for cleaning up after any messes.

A Brief History

Back in 2006, a group of Downtown Alpharetta merchants started the Farmers Market. It was initially held under the old oak tree in the city parking lot to offer residents an opportunity to purchase local farm fresh food and gather to enjoy the area. Farmers would display their goods in the back of their pick-up trucks and stay and socialize until there wasn’t anything left to sell. Since then, the Market has grown and developed into a Saturday morning destination for people from all over the North Fulton area, surrounding counties, and even Atlanta and the North Georgia mountains. Since its early days, Market goers have consistently voted the Alpharetta Farmers Market as a top Market in the area. The Market has received

multiple years’ awards including “Best of North Atlanta,” “Best of North Fulton and South Forsyth,” and “Best Neighborhood Farmers Market.” In addition, the Market remains a great way to experience the Alpharetta community, local shops, restaurants, and to meet new people, friends, and neighbors.

The Alpharetta Farmers Market is open on Saturdays from 8:30 am – 1:00 pm from early April through November. The Market makes every effort to be open rain or shine, but it will close on stormy days with wind, rain, and lightning. Each month ABA holds their member meetings on the last Thursday that provide social networking opportunities along with informative programming. The annual State of the City Address and Mayor’s Breakfast is held each year. Organized by the Alpharetta Business Association, the City of Alpharetta Mayor comments and reflects on the past year and addresses plans for the new year in the City of Alpharetta. Named the “Best Saturday Morning Excursion” by Atlanta Magazine, the Alpharetta Farmer’s Market opened for business in 2006. The Market is open to the public and admission is free. Free parking is available throughout downtown Alpharetta. The 2022 Market runs through October where you can find farmers with fruits, vegetables and natural meats, gardeners with fresh flowers and herbs, and makers of all sorts of edible home goods from yummy desserts and breads to local raw honey and homemade sauces, jellies, and soaps.
