The Children’s Voice
President's Message:
Baptismal Celebration
Yesterday was the third Sunday after Easter and we met at a local church for an afternoon worship service where four of our youth were baptized. It was a good day at the Kentucky United Methodist Homes for Children and Youth, and I’m richer today for having had that experience.
is published quarterly by The Kentucky United Methodist Homes for Children and Youth (incorporated as The Methodist Home of Kentucky), a ministry of the Kentucky Conference of the United Methodist Church. We serve children and families throughout Kentucky. The Children’s Voice is freely distributed to all interested persons.
One of the takeaways from that opportunity is that our kids are so normal. If I took them to the mall to interact with other youth there, you’d never be able to identify them as youth from a residential treatment facility. In fact, most of them have become experts at hiding the trauma to which they have been exposed. They’ve learned the lesson of “filters” well. Most families teach their kids to filter one’s true thoughts and feelings. Too much transparency in a mixed crowd is not a good thing. (Or so we think). We don’t want the whole world to discover the truth about us. But baptism has a way of washing “normal” away. We openly admit our brokenness and poor choices in life. We are ultimately exposed. We readily pledge ourselves to “the road less traveled.”

Our Mission We serve Christ by providing for the physical, emotional, educational, and spiritual needs of children and families. The Kentucky United Methodist Homes for Children and Youth is accredited through the national Council on Accreditation (COA). We serve persons regardless of race, ethnicity, economic status, sex or religion. www.kyumh.org
The other lasting thought from that moment is that our best gift to these youth is the opportunity to know Christ. One of the youth in our care had never been to church before coming to KYUMH. While no one is forced to participate in our worship services, we do offer them to our youth. Everyone exercises their own free will in this regard. And, most of our youth participate willingly. Worship experiences on our campus are one of the places where boys and girls get to interact with one another, so there may be a greater influence at work here. However, it wouldn’t be the first time in history where a young man got converted in a church service because he was interested in a young woman who happened to be a member of the choir! I'm glad to know that while they are with us, our youth have opportunities to come to know Christ and participate in corporate worship settings. They might not otherwise have that chance. Our clinical treatment team is as good as any of the other teams in the state and better than many. However, therapy alone is not enough. What sets the Kentucky United Methodist Homes for Children and Youth apart is our firm belief in a risen Savior. We are so thankful to you, for helping us to offer Christ to the youth in our care. What will your legacy be? ♥
Methodist Home Representative Volunteer Registration
By Melinda Ryles-Smith, Vice President of Advancement
Legacy defined: something that someone has achieved that continues to exist after they are gone. What will you leave behind when you are gone? Certainly each of us hope that we are remembered fondly by those who knew us. We hope that we have left this world a better place for our having been here. We hope that a part of us lives on –our legacy. In our 2013 Annual Report, you will see tributes to some wonderful people who decided that a part of their legacy would be making a difference in the lives of the young people at The Kentucky United Methodist Homes for Children and Youth (KYUMH), both for today and in the future. The legacy of these kind people is that lives will be changed for the better, and as children's lives change for the better, the community will be better. They have chosen to leave a legacy of hope and the opportunity for a new life to abused, abandoned and neglected young people.
we have additional ways to leave a legacy through our Legacy Society. The Legacy Society includes those persons who have included us in their wills and also those who have chosen to invest in a charitable annuity or other planned giving option. By joining our Legacy Society, you become a member of a special group of people committed to sustaining this ministry well into the next generation. As a thank you for joining, we will give you a beautiful tapestry reserved only for Legacy Society members. If you would like information on charitable annuities, including KYUMH in your will, or other planned giving options, please send your contact information in the enclosed business reply envelope using the response card to the right. On behalf of our youth, thank you in advance for your generosity!

In our 143 year history, there have been thousands who, along with their family members, remembered the young people of KYUMH in their wills, just as those remembered today. They had a desire to leave a legacy, one of compassion and life affirming renewal. Without these wonderful people, we would not be here today. Today, in addition to the traditional inclusion in a will,

HONEY DOZIER

By Heidi M. Weaver, PR & Communications Coordinator
Lost FIND A Home
Days after the death of her father, Florida native Honey Dozier was kicked out of her home at age 16. Her mother saw her as an unwelcome reminder of a loveless marriage. Honey lived on the streets and in a shelter for a year. After turning 17, Honey visited home one day to discover her mother preparing to move to Kentucky with a new man. Desperate to escape the area, she traveled with them. It wasn’t long before Honey’s mom betrayed her again, crafting a false story to force her into a psychiatric ward. But eventually, the truth was discovered. Honey was transferred to the Mary Kendall Campus (Owensboro, KY) of 4

The Kentucky United Methodist Homes for Children and Youth (KYUMH). That was 23 years ago. But Honey’s green eyes still fill with tears when she remembers the day her mother left her for good. She didn't seem to be concerned about what would become of her daughter after she graduated our program. Roy Hicks was one of the first people Honey met at the Mary Kendall Campus. "He seemed like a really nice guy," Honey said. "I thought, 'Oh, I got him, I'm gonna run him over.' He was a great guy with a great smile, but yeah, you're not gonna do that are you?" she said with a laugh. Roy Hicks has been with KYUMH for 24 years and currently serves as the
Children’s Voice
Campus Resources Coordinator in Owensboro. He knows when and how to set boundaries with the youth in our programs to make sure they stay safe. "She was one of the first kids I had really good rapport with," Roy said. Honey smiles when she remembers Roy. "It was like this heavenly light around him, you know? There was light around him! Like he was okay. He was okay but he was not to be fooled with. He wasn't somebody I had to fear, but he was definitely somebody who would make sure, in a very assertive way, that I was not going to do that (misbehave)." Still reeling from life's hard knocks, Honey unfortunately was not able to fully recover while she was in our

program. But she took the lessons with her. After leaving the Mary Kendall Campus, Honey had four children. Stuck in a cycle of poverty and unable to provide for her kids, Honey began to get in trouble with the law. But finally, she found her way. She attributes some of the strength she found to recover to time and love poured into her during her short time at the Mary Kendall Campus. "It was a very safe place," she says. "I'm okay now. You know, I spent all that time feeling lost and confused, and I didn't know what direction to go in," but Honey says she finally found her way.
Honey remembers
The Mary Kendall Home
as one of the only places she was ever safe and protected. "There were so many things about the Mary Kendall Campus that really truly made you feel special," she remarked. Honey wasn't used to getting Christmas gifts or having people pay attention to the little ways of making her feel safe. But the Mary Kendall Campus felt like home. "It was the one place I could go to sleep every single night and feel comforted by my personal quilt."
Honey says she hopes youth today understand the gift of KYUMH. "I wish they knew that it is home." Honey's eyes fill with tears and she pauses. "It's okay. They don't have to fight. It's a place where they can actually find out who they are in a safe place." In May, Honey graduated from Jefferson Community Technical College with her associate's degree. She is now a busy mother and has a thriving career advocating for the working poor as the Director of Development for Kentucky Jobs with Justice. Honey plans to immediately pursue her Bachelor's degree in Political Science at Kentucky State University and someday she even hopes to claim a Master's degree in Honey enjoys being an active parent to her Public Administration. Her successes children, including her youngest, Tayshaun today have begun to redeem the pain Towns, pictured with her. of her youth. “The Mary Kendall Campus is really truly a place where you can let go of all those chains that you feel are binding you,” Honey says. "For her to be where she is at now," Roy said, "she has worked hard. We are proud of her. We are proud of all the kids who make some good out of where they come from." Honey is grateful. “I have to thank the Mary Kendall Campus. I don’t know where I’d be without them."

THE KENTUCKY UNITED METHODIST HOMES FOR CHILDREN & YOUTH
2013 Annual Report
Within the pages of this annual report you will find many program numbers and data that represent our best effort to be transparent about how your gifts are used to fulfill the mission of the agency. President/CEO
What lies behind these pieces of information are lives that are remembered by honor and memorial gifts. These saints have led lives that model the life of Christ. We are most grateful for their influence and we stand on their shoulders as we try to follow their example. Additionally, these numbers represent the lives of youth and adults that we have come into contact with in the pursuit of our mission. We believe that both our lives and theirs have been changed because we have been brought together. Your faithfulness in remembering these saints through financial gifts continues to be the bridge that allows us to sustain this vital ministry. We offer heartfelt appreciation for your gifts and for the trust that you place in us. We have said it many times before but it remains true that we could not do this work without you.

Dorothy Sue Miller, 69, grew up in a very simple environment. She never owned a home and never had
a fine car. She was sixty-nine at her accidental death and had never been married. She was a member of Antioch United Methodist Church which had always been on the McDaniels charge until a few years ago when the two churches united. Sue had been a member of the church from the time she was a child. She loved her church and was a staunch supporter of the Methodist Church. Her cousin, Charlotte Faye Miller, said it would please Dorothy Sue Miller very much to know that she had contributed to KYUMH and helped care for neglected children. We thank Ms. Miller for offering a legacy of kindness and generosity that lives on, touching the lives of the KYUMH youth.
Ruth Wells Roland, 89, formerly of Albany, KY, was born on October 28, 1923. She passed away October
15, 2013. The daughter of John and Ann Orton Wells, she left home in 1944 for Louisville, KY and married Welden Roland. Ruth worked at Royal Crown Cola and at a furniture company. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two brothers, Robert and Rual Wells. She leaves nieces and nephews that were her family. Weldon and Ruth were members of Epiphany United Methodist Church, where, for the last 15 years of her life, she faithfully served as our Methodist Home Representative. Many members of the church who attended her funeral, recounted her passionate advocacy for the children of KYUMH. One friend said, “She just loved the Home.” Ruth is greatly missed but her legacy of love lives on through her generous bequest.
Helen Shambron-Weinberger, 94, originially from Sebree, KY, passed away in South Florida on
October 29, 2013. According to her executor, although she lived in Florida, she never forgot The Kentucky United Methodist Homes for Children and Youth and that is why she chose to include our ministry in her final wishes. We are grateful for Ms. Shambron-Weinberger's generous legacy which lives on through her generous bequest for the benefit of the KYUMH children.
Elvira Catherine Timmons, 100, of Madisonville, KY, was born on August 7, 1912. She passed away
Saturday, August 18, 2012. Ms. Timmons was born to the late Nettie M. and Pearl C. Williams. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, J.B. Thomas; her second husband, Thornton Timmons; two brothers, John E. and Emil J. Williams; her sister, Thelma Coffman; and one nephew, Edward Glenn Coffman Jr. Mrs. Timmons was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she attended the Isabel Gardiner Sunday School Class and the Wesleyan Circle. She is survived by three nephews, John Davis of Thompson Station, TN, Malcolm Coffman of Coca Beach, FL, and Frank Williams of Madisonville, KY; three nieces, Emily Williams Lancaster of Ocean Springs, MS, Betsy Williams-Johnson of Madisonville, KY, and Sue Bigers of Slaughters, KY, and many friends. We are grateful for a legacy of compassion living on for the KYUMH children through Ms. Timmons' generous bequest.
