In a few days we’ll be celebrating Thanksgiving. I overheard someone say recently, “I’ll know if I’ve eaten enough when I can’t lie on my belly without pain.” I’m not advocating for this rule of “fullness.” When I think of my circle of friends and family, I don’t know a single person who will be concerned about having enough to eat at Thanksgiving or any other time for that matter. I think that says something about our current reality. It also says something about me. We live in a rather isolated world where we interact with people who look just like us.
I don’t mean identical, but for the most part our friends and families have the same backgrounds, education, and financial resources. They are us with different addresses. However, we need to be clear. Just because we don’t know or interact with them, there are people living in poverty in our communities. They often become invisible to us. I’m grateful for your friendship and faithfulness and I humbly ask you to help us make more friends. The US Census Bureau calculates the poverty rate for a family of four, two adults and two children under the age of 18 at $24,339 annually. Therefore, there are only a mere 40 million people living below the poverty rate in the US. But let’s be honest, how can four people survive in America on $24,339 a year? The standard is
simply not workable. These numbers mean that 12.9% of the American population live in poverty. (According to the Census Bureau) The poverty rate for children 18 and under went down from 19.7% in 2015 to 18% in 2016. In round numbers, nearly one in five children in America live in poverty according to the standards of the US Census Bureau. Returning to my circle of friends and family who will have more than enough to eat on Thanksgiving, I realize again that my world is too small. I need more friends who don’t look like me.

As of October 13, 2017, we have moved our Versailles operations to 1115 Ashgrove Rd., Nicholasville, KY. For 86 years, Woodford County was our home, and we will always have a special place in our hearts for our Versailles friends. As we embark on the next phase of this ministry, we are grateful to the Jessamine County community for welcoming us. It is our intention to be a great neighbor and partner for improving the lives of Kentucky children.

Overcoming Chaos Linda found Love and Stability.

Linda’s childhood was filled with neglect, abuse and chaos, but she overcame it all to become a responsible, loving parent. Linda was born to a fifteen-year-old mother. Her twenty-five year-old father worked out of state and was rarely home. While he was away, Linda and her three siblings were regularly abandoned by their mother. She would leave the children with whomever would take them and be gone for days. This pattern of instability, chaos, and neglect continued until friends of the family, who desperately wanted a son, offered to take in Linda’s brother and agreed to take all four children to have him. Linda was only five, yet vividly remembers holding her father’s hand as

they walked to the door of her new home. Looking up at him, she felt overwhelming fear and sadness thinking she would never see him again. Unfortunately, Linda’s substitute parents were not kind as she had hoped. For the next seven years, they treated the children more like servants than family, and frequently beat them. Linda’s life of abuse and neglect had become more hopeless than before. During this time, she rarely saw her parents who had divorced since leaving her. Many other family members knew Linda and her siblings were being abused, but did nothing. One day her mother unexpectedly arrived and took the kids back. Linda thought her life had turned for the better. However, she soon realized her stepfather was alcoholic and abusive. “Life at this point was filled with abuse, confusion and chaos,” Linda recalls. At fourteen, Linda left to live with her father. She was a good kid and stayed out of trouble. However, one day she arrived home from school to find social workers there and her stepmother repeatedly saying she was “uncontrollable.” “I didn’t know what I had done. I had no idea what was happening. I just sat there and didn’t defend myself.” A short time later, Linda was taken to our Mary Kendall Campus in Owensboro and remembers feeling, “My dad was walking out of my life again!” The Campus Director hugged her, assured her she was in the right place and told her, “You’re home.”

“From the moment I walked in, I felt nothing but love. I knew I was home,” Linda says. There Linda learned how to deal with her chaotic, abusive past. She made lifelong friends with the other girls and the staff became her family, “They were there to support me - it was the only stable thing I knew.”
Linda and Kristy met while living at the KyUMH Mary Kendall Campus in Owensboro and have remained close friends.
Today, Linda is a Certified Nursing Assistant, sharing her passion of loving others which was nurtured during her stay at KyUMH. She now has two grown children and remembers her determination to not make the same mistakes her parents made, “You can’t let the past dictate your future.

You can be an overcomer.” Throughout the constant changes in her life, Linda has maintained a loving heart and thanks God, knowing her life could have easily taken a very different path. Volunteers "Chip" In Golf scramble raises over $30,000 for our kids!

A dynamic volunteer team has taken our Golf Scramble for the Children to new
levels. Over the past two years, this dedicated group of seven volunteers have banded together around this stated mission: “We will raise money to bring hope and help to kids in great need, and we will leave a positive, upbeat impression on our players, guests, and sponsors that will

continue with them long after the event.” They are succeeding in the mission! We have seen more golfers, more money and more excitement about the tournament and the Methodist Home ministry because of their efforts. These servant-hearted leaders have acquired numerous
sponsors and donations, setup the course and so much more! Volunteers like these are a blessing to KyUMH and make events like these possible. With their help, this year's tournament raised over $30,000 to support our ministry of serving Kentucky's youth in crisis.

So What Is A Charitable Gift Annuity? A charitable gift annuity is a simple contract between you and The Kentucky United Methodist Homes for Children and Youth.
In exchange for your irrevocable gift of cash, securities, or other assets, KyUMH agrees to pay one or two annuitants you name a fixed sum each year for their life. The older your designated annuitants are at the time of the gift, the greater the fixed income we can agree to pay. In most cases, part of each payment is tax-free, increasing each payment's after-tax value. If you give appreciated property you will pay capital

gains tax on only part of the appreciation. In addition, if you name yourself as an annuitant, the capital gains tax will be spread out over many years rather than be all due in the year of your gift.
Why Choose A Charitable Annuity With The Home? We have had several donors who after having taken out their first charitable annuity with us choose to take out more. After realizing that they can place funds in a charitable
