A Letter From Dr. E. Ray Throckmorton, Former KyUMH President/CEO Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, As a former President/Executive Director, I am proud of the ministry at The Kentucky United Methodist Homes for Children & Youth. For 146 years, through this organization, we United Methodists have served the most vulnerable Kentucky children. With the upcoming move of the Versailles Campus to Nicholasville and the new vision for expanded services, I have had many people ask me why the change and why not stay and rebuild in Versailles? The answer is found in the history of this ministry and how it has survived over the years, when others like it did not. Through continually evaluating the needs of Kentucky children and then transforming to meet their needs, the Home has assured that it stays on the cutting edge of care. There have been several transformations in its history: • 1871 Began as a Widows and Orphans Home • 1931 Moved to the Versailles farm to serve more children and offer them farming skills • 1970’s The orphanage transitioned to a treatment home for abused/neglected youth • 1983 Mary Kendall Home is acquired to serve western Kentucky children • 1998 Started the first community service programs to serve children in their communities Then, in 2009, the Board of Trustees, made up of clergy and laity, as part of their long range planning, determined that updated facilities were needed to provide the best service to Kentucky children. In the process, they evaluated the cost of renovating the current property along with the cost of maintaining the 260 acres. Although the farm crops and cattle once served to feed the children and also gave them farming skills, our current program is too intensive to have time for farming and there are now child labor laws that prevent us from having the children work the farm. The expense of maintaining our acres takes away from funds we could be using directly for the children. In addition, the cost to rebuild would be at least twice as much as relocating. Therefore, after much prayer and consideration, a property in Jessamine County was found and the decision to move was made. Though bittersweet, the relocation would enable the best utilization of the financial resources available. I am honored to have served and supported an organization that is always improving how it cares for children while never wavering in its mission – serving Christ by providing for the physical, emotional, educational and spiritual needs of children and families. I hope you will join me and my wife Donna, as we support this ministry that is changing the lives of more children than ever before. Yours in Christ, Dr. E. Ray Throckmorton Bringing Hope... Staying Strong
Cody rose above unbelievable circumstances to succeed.
By Devon Lindsey PR & Communications
Despite a very tough childhood, Cody now has his own place, a steady job and plans for college. Cody and his brother grew up with a strong, loving mother and a dangerous, disturbed father. Cody’s father lost multiple friends in a car accident while he was driving and shortly after, lost a daughter to murder. To cope with the loss, Cody’s father abused drugs and later turned to selling them to support his habit. He taught Cody to sell as well.
Within a short time, Cody was devastated by the loss of several loved ones, including his grandma, grandpa and numerous close friends. He began to lose control.
Unable to control his anger, Cody’s father abused his mother on multiple occasions. After years of hurt, Cody’s mother took Cody, 10, and left his father to be safe and closer to family.
June/July 2017
Cody knew it was time to change. Through Safe Haven, Cody learned how to manage his overwhelming grief and anger in a healthier, safe way. “I felt like I was home. Safe Haven helped me cope with the deaths in my life.” There he learned how to live on his own, manage money and become a contributing member of society. Cody

Cody’s mother found a good job and support from family members nearby. However, being removed from the chaos was not enough to heal the negative emotional effects of their previous life for Cody.
now has a good job and dreams of going into business management as a career. Cody reflects on his life then and sees where he could’ve ended up. “If I could say one thing to others going through a tough time – stay strong.”

Cody gives advice to others going through similar situations because he understands.
He was often in trouble at school. He became aggressive with his mother and was sent to juvenile detention. Following multiple placements, Cody found his way to the Safe Haven independent living program.

Farewell, Miss Sharon. Thank you for your many years of dedicated service.
By Devon Lindsey for the benediction.” said Miss PR & Communications Sharon.
In May, KyUMH held a lovely goodbye reception in honor of a very special lady – Miss Sharon Rose Evans. In 1965, after she received her B.S. in Home Economics and Library, then KyUMH Superintendent Rev. Dr. James Averitt expressed to Miss Sharon the need for young people to work at the Methodist Home because 64 was the average age of the staff. “Suddenly, my heart was strangely warm. I couldn’t wait
Within two weeks, she was hired to do any job that needed to be done. Miss Sharon took on a number of positions during her time, such as hostess, secretary, librarian and postal clerk. Miss Sharon held her position as postal clerk for a number of years and was responsible for sorting mail, organizing office supplies and working with volunteers to package mail-out materials. She will be greatly missed and we wish her all of the happiness in the world!
Miss Sharon proudly shows off her goodbye card made by KyUMH residents.
