It’s become a running joke at the Methodist Home. When are you going to complete the building process? When is our office space going to be done? The answer is always the same, “Two weeks.” What isn’t clear to anyone is when the “two weeks” begin or end. The truth of the situation is this: the things that matter most in this life take time to nurture and mature. Technology, the Internet, and drive-thru restaurants have made us people who want things instantaneously, but quite often the speed at which the product is delivered makes the quality suffer.
As always, thank you for investing in the vital work and thank you for your patience.
Recently, the spiritual giant, Rev. Billy Graham passed away at the age of 99. Only the fullness of
A group of Nicholasville policemen recently stopped by our campus early one morning to have breakfast with our residents. Knowing many of our residents may not have a positive view of policemen, their goal is to improve that image by connecting with our kids in a relaxed, unofficial setting. The Nicholasville police department is an important partner in our ministry and we appreciate their compassion for our kids!
We believe every individual is an individual of worth, entitled to God's gift of wholeness of life. The Kentucky United Methodist Homes for Children and Youth is accredited through the national Council on Accreditation (COA). We serve persons regardless of race, ethnicity, economic status, sex or religion.

Helping young people process their pain and brokenness is not an overnight process either. Being patient and letting these children move at their own pace is something that we’ve become accustomed to. We can wait a few more days for construction to be completed with buildings and the youth.
God’s Kingdom will tell the complete story of how many persons how been converted under his preaching. However, it’s his wife Ruth, who preceded him in death that I’m thinking of today. The story is told about how they were driving on the interstate one day when they passed a construction sign. Ruth told Billy that she wanted those words included on her tombstone. The sign said, “End of Construction. Thank you for your patience.”

As I write to you, we’re in the season of Lent. It’s that 40-day (not including Sundays) waiting period between Ash Wednesday and Easter. Taking an honest internal look at our brokenness and sin is not something we should hurry through.

COVER STORY
Breaking Free
One Bold Act Changed the Course of Kristy's Life By Bruce Jones Communications/PR Coordinator
Kristy endured a childhood of confusion, abandonment and abuse, yet one courageous move allowed KyUMH to help her life change. Kristy’s young mother wasn’t ready to be a mom and her father was never part of her life.
Kristy, age 14
She was often left with a local family by her mother for several days. After keeping Kristy so often, the family threatened to file abandonment charges. Naïve, Kristy’s mother allowed the family to take custody of her without becoming legal guardians. Over the next few months, Kristy’s mother would pick her up for brief visits. Each time, she pleaded with her mom not to take her back. Believing the repetitive separation was too much for her four-year-old, Kristy’s mother stopped visiting.
Kristy's guardians were physically and emotionally abusive. They told her the memories of her birth family were all in her mind, her parents died, they didn’t exist. They sent her to school in first grade bruised and wearing a pinned-on cloth diaper. She was made to rewash all of the dishes if one was found unclean. Her bedroom door was so filled with cracks that a glass of water would freeze in cold weather. Her home life had become so oppressive Kristy attempted suicide while only in fifth grade. School became her only refuge, “It’s where I felt loved.” Often when she was sick, the school custodian realizing how much she dreaded home, allowed her to sleep on a couch in the boiler room and cared for her so she wouldn’t have to go home. At fourteen, Kristy was always locked in her room by sundown with no bathroom access. One evening, she sat on the floor and prayed desperately to God for help. Then, with a sudden burst of courage and strength she felt from the prayer, she kicked the old

farmhouse door until it broke from its nailed-up hinges. When her guardians came to investigate, she began fighting them. “To get where I had to be, it was something I had to do. I would never have done that, it was the first time I had ever done anything disrespectful.” The following day, a social worker took Kristy from school to the courthouse - her guardians had filed charges against her. After hearing teachers’ suspicions of child abuse, the social worker and judge sided with Kristy. That’s when Kristy first came to KyUMH. Soon after arrival, Kristy knew KyUMH was a safe place.
even went shopping – I had never gone shopping.” Kristy regularly met with counselors and dealt with anger toward her guardians and toward her mother for leaving her. Today, Kristy has a family of her own with her husband, J.D. and three sons. She has been a stay-at-home mom until recently starting work in an after school program. Reflecting on her time at KyUMH she said, “You don’t see what a blessing it is until you’re older and look back, thinking - if it wasn’t for that place, I don’t know where I would have been. I’m grateful to have had that opportunity!”
“I felt included immediately. You were automatically part of the family. It was more like home." For the first time, she felt loved and accepted. She realized her prayer had been answered. She fondly recalls her time there and recounts some of the little things that meant a lot to her, “We got an allowance - I never had an allowance before. We

Lions Today, Leaders Tomorrow Ashgrove Academy - Innovations in Education
By Bruce Jones Communications/PR Coordinator
State-of-the-art education is underway at the KyUMH Nicholasville Campus. From the beginning, Jessamine County Public Schools personnel were included in designing the educational wing. Many of our youth have endured multiple placements prior to coming to us, so they are often several grades behind. This innovative program provides individualized educational plans to help them get back to grade level. Jessamine County Schools Director of Pupil Personnel, Donna Givens, describing her part in the process said, “My role was originally to help negotiate the contract for setting up and developing the school. After getting started, we realized it needed a part-time principal which started as me. We thought it would be to just do grants and administrative things, but once you meet these kids and see this is your mission, everything revolves around it.” The partnership between KyUMH and Jessamine County Public Schools has produced a cutting-edge instructional setting for our youth with teachers who really care about them. The Jessamine County school system has engaged the youth of KyUMH in leadership from the start. Since classes began last fall, students have developed a school name, Ashgrove Academy (derived from the campus location on 4

Ashgrove Road), the mascot (a lion), school colors (forest green and white) and the motto, “Lions Today, Leaders Tomorrow.” Two KyUMH residents, the teachers and KyUMH staff are included in an advisory council reporting directly to the School Board. The council provides an opportunity for students to cultivate their leadership skills. Ashgrove Academy offers a small classroom setting and one-to-one contact with teachers. Upon arrival, each teen is assessed to determine their level of academics. “We want to produce as many graduates as we can,” Givens noted with pride. Schedules are modified to each student, especially those close to age 18 who are working toward gaining credits necessary for a high school diploma. Student reading levels are also measured. Reading intervention is provided by a KyUMH volunteer, to improve those at lower levels. “Kids here don’t have access

to phones or social media, so they read,” commented teacher Katherine Evans. In another new partnership, the Jessamine County Public Library provides a small library of books for kids to checkout, swapping for new ones regularly. The youth enjoy getting books tailored to what they want to read. Classes are structured to touch on major content students need to know in core subjects - English, History, Science, and Math. Innovative teachers, Katherine Evans (English, History) and Jason Hadley (Science, Math) develop curriculum to engage
different learning styles. “The teachers do a phenomenal job differentiating the instruction for students at different levels. It’s one of the most difficult things to do here,” said Givens. “We make studies specific for each child,” added Evans, “Sometimes we change how material is presented based on the kind of day they’re having. The kids have a familylike relationship with the (KyUMH) staff. They are able to take them out to talk or go for a walk to work through the problem and get them back on point.” Mr. Hadley pointed out that this gives the Ashgrove Academy teachers and students a resource not available in the traditional classroom. When asked about her vision for Ashgrove Academy, Givens said, “My vision for the students who come here is to get a high school diploma if possible, provide opportunities for a GED if they are ready for it, but at a minimum, I want them to learn something here that will make them better adults and productive citizens. This is my passion and it’s the teachers’ passion as well.” Education is critical to helping our youth gain control of their future. Through this partnership, we see opportunities for a better life for each of the students.

Love by Action God's Messengers of Hope
By Melinda R. Smith, Vice President for Advancement
When God calls us, it is to remind us that we are God’s children, made to be in relationship with Him, bearing witness to His love. Recognizing and helping alleviate suffering allows each of us to engage in the calling of God to wholeness.
The Kentucky United Methodist Children’s Homes is one vehicle where you can put your love into action. With the step of faith we took together, moving the central Kentucky campus to Nicholasville, along with plans for the future, your support is needed even more. You can contribute to success in fulfilling God’s mission to care for children. We are grateful when people like you put your love into action right where you are
"My children, we should love people not only with words and talk, but by our actions and true caring." 1 John 3:18 (NCV) Choosing to support the young people at KyUMH through gifts, prayer, and service is a way you can become God’s messenger of hope. He can use all of us no matter what we do or where we live.
by supporting life changing ministry to abused and neglected children. God is calling us to help Kentucky rebuild lives from despair to a future of hope. United, we can help show hurting young people they are not alone.
Here are some ways to act on your love, supporting KyUMH right from your home town: Methodist Home Representative Engage your church by representing the Methodist Home (if your church doesn’t already have a representative). Methodist Home Representatives are crucial to keeping our church family informed and excited about the mission of offering hope and healing.
Angel Sponsor Angel Sponsors step up to make a regular financial commitment to sustain care for at-risk kids. They are the backbone of the KyUMH fiscal support. There are four levels of giving, making up the difference between government grants and our costs of caring for hurting young people. We can send you a pamphlet about the opportunities for angel sponsors.
Fifth Sunday Offerings The lifeline of KyUMH support, these offerings provide regular financial help. If your church doesn’t receive bulletin inserts and pew envelopes, let us know and we will get them to you! Four times each year the Fifth Sunday offering is taken at all United Methodist Churches in Kentucky. This year the dates are: April 29, July 29, Sept. 30, Dec. 30.
If you would like more information on these opportunities, complete the form and return it in the envelope included with this newsletter

Birthday Surprise Volunteers Bring Joy to a Special Day
the KyUMH teens as peers By Jessica Fleck, – making everybody feel Capital Campaign/ Volunteer Coordinator welcome. Everyone had a great
Two teens and their small group leader showed up at the glass enclosed KyUMH cafeteria. They had everything with them: delight, care, fun …and cake. A few resident boys, then a few girls arrived. The birthday girl seemed like she was wondering if someone could have really brought tangible hope for a happy 16th birthday. "Happy Birthday! We heard you liked purple and sparkles!" said the volunteer who had worked longer than usual to bake and frost the sparkly purple cake. The two girls who came talked and played games with the residents. They identified with
time of relaxed fun. These thoughtful ladies volunteered their time and talents to make a memorable birthday for a girl who wondered if she would have a sweet sixteen party at all. It was a joyous celebration of life - the life of a young girl with a past of disappointment, but a future of hope aided by a simple act of compassion. The girls’ small group from Southland Christian Church comes each month. Megan, their leader, prepares a tasty cake that matches what the KyUMH kids love – their favorite flavors, colors and themes. It’s inspiring to watch young women from a nearby church invest so kindly in young people at KyUMH. KyUMH Volunteer Coordinator, Jessica Fleck with birthday volunteers.
Residents Explore Their Creative Side KyUMH residents in Ashgrove Academy recently learned about the Abstract Expressionist art movement. One resident student researched the movement and presented the findings to the class through PowerPoint. The students were then led by an outreach program of the Jessamine County Public Library to produce their own paintings using artist styles they learned about. Jackson Pollack, Willem de Kooning and Mark Rothko were among the artists whose styles were studied.
