I’ve always taken enjoyment from completing a “project.” In ministry we often work tirelessly, day after day only to look back on our labor and wonder if we accomplished anything. Many times one can’t tell where he or she started or finished. Projects have beginnings and endings, progress and completion, and a finished product to point to and say, “I did that.” These occasions are a helpful addition to the work repertoire. As we come to another year’s end, I’m reminded in Ecclesiastes 3 that there are seasons and times for all of

life. It gives one the opening to ponder God’s goodness and his divine employment. The writer of Ecclesiastes says that “there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil.” Working with troubled young people is complicated and often difficult, but the opportunity for a life changing decision makes the struggle worthwhile. We’ve had the opportunity to see some of these youth blossom and grow as they come to trust their ability to make the good and right choice for themselves and others this year. There is a real sense of satisfaction in this work. But unlike projects, our personal growth never ends. The maturation process

COVER STORY

Sharing The Gift Jonathan Pays It Forward

By Bruce Jones Communications/PR Coordinator

Jonathan never knew his father and his mother remarried an abusive alcoholic when he was 10 years old. His once active mother was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease and her physical and mental health declined rapidly. She developed severe anxiety and was diagnosed as bi-polar and schizophrenic. She became dependent on medications and tensions grew in the household as the family moved often due to financial difficulties. When Jonathan was 16, he left home to live with his grandparents after a fight with his stepfather.

His grandparents later divorced, which divided the family further. Later that year, two days before Christmas, Jonathan arrived home to find that his over-medicated mother and stepfather had beaten his grandmother during an argument, but she did not press charges. She healed from the beating, but soon suffered a stroke. A judge ruled Jonathan’s grandmother unfit to care for him and suggested he be returned to his parents or placed in a youth home. Jonathan felt his best option was to run away and was missing for several weeks until the police picked him up. His case worker had him sent to our Mary Kendall Campus in Owensboro. His first thought when he arrived was, “Why do they

care? We’re not their kids. It actually annoyed me how much they cared about kids who weren’t theirs.” The staff was compassionate, but since he was now 17, they also challenged him with responsibility. “They didn’t treat me like a child. The staff told me, since I was older I needed to be a positive role model for the younger kids. We became a bunch of brothers there.” That Christmas, while the kids were opening

Never in my life would I have done that until that day. Just being at Mary Kendall, for the first time I thought, if you can be good and just pay it forward, maybe that’s enough. The staff allowed me to share those gifts with the other kids.” Jonathan continues to pay it forward as a youth coach and recently returned to our Mary Kendall Campus to encourage the staff. www.KyUMH.org ∙ 859.523.3001

He’s still dedicated to pay it forward by being a positive role model to many kids by coaching various sports teams. He credits his time at Mary Kendall for his transformation, “I was just another poor kid. They gave me self-worth that I didn’t have. The Season of Giving An Opportunity for Changing Lives

By Melinda R. Smith, Vice President for Advancement

During this season of giving, you are thinking about Christmas gifts for family and friends and those important to you. As you plan your giving, please remember this life-changing ministry. More than ever, we need you to come beside us to fulfill this vision of serving more children than ever before and doing so right in their own communities.

Cash Donation One easy way to give is through a cash gift. You can donate cash by mailing a check or going to our website (KyUMH.org) and using a debit or credit card.

Donating Stocks, Mutual Funds and other Securities Another way to give is donating assets such as stocks, bonds, and mutual funds that have increased in value. If you give the stock or other property before selling it, you can avoid capital gains taxes that you would otherwise have to pay. Therefore, you not only receive the tax-deduction for the gift, but you also avoid the additional capital gains tax. If you have stocks that have decreased in value, you can sell them, and donate the cash from the sale to KyUMH. Then you will not only get a tax deduction from the gift, but you could also write off the loss in value on your tax bill. If you are interested in transferring a mutual fund, stock or bond to your Kentucky United Methodist Children’s Homes, contact your brokerage firm and let them know. They can advise you on how best to proceed.

Donating from Your IRA If you are over 70-1/2 years of age, and you have an IRA, you are required to take a minimum distribution. If you don’t need the income and you don’t want the additional funds to increase your adjusted gross income, you can use the Qualified Charitable Distribution to give a gift directly from your IRA to KyUMH. If you choose this option, your distribution will not be added to your income and thereby increase your tax liability. To explore this option, contact with the firm handling your IRA. If you have general questions about any of these or other ways to support this mission, contact us at our Nicholasville Campus, (859) 523-3001, and we will be happy to help. Thank you again for your love and concern for the young people we serve. Through your kindness, you help us bring the chance for a better life to young people who have endured suffering and hopelessness.

Planning A Legacy of Love If you decide to review your estate plans in the next few months, remember that including Kentucky United Methodist Children’s Homes in your will or estate planning can help you make a lasting gift to the children at the Home, while also providing relief from gift and estate taxes to your children. For information on planned giving and naming KyUMH in your will, email Melinda Smith at Melinda. Smith@kyumh.org or return this form in the enclosed envelope.

Peace By Piece

Volunteer Group Creates Beautifully Symbolic Quilt By Jessica Fleck, Capital Campaign/ Volunteer Coordinator

You should come and see it. A vibrant and intricately sewn quilt now hangs in the entryway to the new Leadership Center at the Nicholasville Campus. Photos don’t really show the beauty of the quilted piece of art that a group of volunteers made for KyUMH. Each square represents a part of the history and future of the Kentucky United Methodist Children’s Homes. Even the stitching, made to look like the blowing wind of the Spirit, speaks to the mission of the organization. A modified “Dove in the Window” pattern compliments a striking three foot dove in the center of the quilt in order to symbolize the work of the Holy Spirit on behalf of abused and neglected children. The vivacious blue and green colors, which mirror the new KyUMH logo, are meant to remind anyone who enters of mental health and child abuse awareness, as well as symbolize hope and healing. The skilled quilters also stitched in ichthus and cross blocks. Being quite large and intricate, this unique project took the Hartz to Hearts Quilters about four months to complete, from start to finish. Wilda Woodyard led the project and completed most of the sewing. Having helped the Simpsonville UMC youth group to do a field day for the KyUMH kids at the beginning of the Summer, she’d offered her services. JeanAnn Martin 6

did the embroidery work on the Crosses and Ichthus as well as the dedication on the back. Three other people helped Mrs. Woodyard sew the blocks: Barbara McReynolds, Janet Head, and Linda Humphress. Their attention to detail is amazing,

when you look closely at their expertise. Edith Reith took care of quality control by snipping all the loose threads and making sure all the seams were pressed. Those helping with the feathers (choosing fabrics, placement and cutting) included Bobbi Frost, Jean

Simon, and Barbara Scott. Finally, before bringing the quilt to the Kentucky United Methodist Children’s Homes, Pastor Debora Kelly blessed it, the congregation laid hands on it, and they offered individual prayers on September 23, 2018.

"The Spirit truly guided us in every step of the creation. As the design is created and the fabrics are chosen, the piece takes on a life of its own to tell a story." - Wilda Woodyard

A publication of The Kentucky United Methodist Children's Homes

The love and care that went into the creating of the quilt astounded each staff member at KyUMH as we viewed it for the first time. Everything seems to fit the mission of offering hope and healing to abused and neglected children across Kentucky. Mrs. Woodyard said that this particular “quilt was so much fun because of the criteria. The Spirit truly guided us in every step of the creation. As the design is created and the fabrics are chosen, the piece takes on a life of its own to tell a story. When it is completed and I stand back and look at it, I am in awe of what He has done through my hands. It is always a surprise! The reward comes when someone looks at it and some small part speaks to them just when they need it most.” Through the years thousands of workers, visitors, and children will be blessed by this gift. The huge quilt hangs as a reminder of all the children who have come before and will go forward from the arms of the Kentucky United Methodist Children's Homes with a quilt in their hands and love in their hearts.

The quilt now hangs in the entryway of the Leadership Center (above) on the Nicholasville Campus. The detail at left highlights the artistry of the centerpiece dove.

Evolve Counseling Center Has Ribbon-Cutting Event By Bruce Jones Communications/PR Coordinator

The KyUMH Mary Kendall Campus in Owensboro held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on October 18th to officially launch the opening of the Evolve Counseling Center. The concept began in the fall of 2017 with the idea of providing a therapeutic service focused on providing quality behavioral health to the Owensboro community and surrounding areas. The new center offers community outpatient services committed to the wellness of children, adolescents, adults, couples and families. The program is designed to treat the whole person and strives to serve the mental health needs of the community through prevention, intervention, treatment and education. With independently licensed

therapists on staff, the center ensures empathy, acceptance, respect, empowerment and genuineness through each step of the counseling process. Director of Program and Services, Shannon Gollner states, "Our goal is to help

clients build the tools for coping with life's daily stressors as well as the more difficult situations. We help our clients look at problems through a different lens in order to develop new ways of responding and breaking

through stuck patterns which may be holding them back from wellness." For additional information about the Evolve Counseling Center and it's services, call (270) 683-6481or email evolve@kyumh.org.

Mother/Son Event Benefits KyUMH By Bruce Jones Communications/PR Coordinator

The Signature Club of Landsdowne in Lexington saw two sell-out sessions of mothers and sons sharing a special night together on September 21st. These young “knights” proved chivalry is still very much alive, as boys of all ages escorted their mothers for a fun-filled evening of food, photos, magic, music and dancing.

Chick-fil-A was the generous sponsor for the event which featured great Chick-fil-A food. The proceeds from the evening help change lives and bring hope to children and youth throughout the Commonwealth through a donation made to the Kentucky United Methodist Children’s Homes.

Chick-fil-A Area Marketing Director, Chris Wilson (left) visited the Nicholasville Campus to present a donation check in the amount of $7,713.95 to KyUMH Development Coordinator, Rev. Casey Neely. (Casey's the one on the far right)
