From the President's Desk: I recently had the opportunity to reconnect with someone who has been a huge influence in my life and a friend for nearly thirty-five years. God has blessed his ministry and his church has grown tremendously through the years. God has been so good to use this dear man to reach so many for His Kingdom’s work. It was wonderful to worship with them and to experience firsthand how God is at work in that place. My friend had asked me to share the story of my journey with Christ and the “thread of God’s miracle” in me with his congregation. When I began to reflect on God’s goodness in my life over the years, I thought, I’ll never be able to do this in the allotted time. There’s too much!
each other’s story. It was an unspoken theme, but we both share a desire for significance. We want our lives to matter for God’s Kingdom. I meet people in the life of his church who are changed because of ministry that has already taken place, and will take place in the future. In the pages that follow, you will hear from a young person who believes that staff at The Kentucky United Methodist Home for Children and Youth cared and gave value to her young life. I think that is significant. I believe there is value in that. I think that builds the Kingdom.
Your faithfulness and participation in giving bring significance to young lives, to the ministry of The Kentucky United Methodist Homes for Children and Youth, and the greater Kingdom There is a recurring theme through the of God. Thank you again for all that stories. When I needed help, God was you do. faithful. Jesus never fails! My friend and I repeated this message to each other as we visited and caught up with

5 Easy Ways To Help By Melinda Ryles-Smith, Vice President of Advancement
Below are some ways you can support our young people in addition to your Fifth Sunday Offering: CHRISTMAS GIFTS FOR OUR YOUNG PEOPLE If you would like to help us provide a special Christmas for the young people we serve, please consider purchasing gift cards for them. We give those gift cards to our staff who know our residents well and they buy gifts that are personally chosen for each one. We also give some gift cards directly to our kids. Especially for those who live with us, getting to leave campus and go shopping is a fun outing. We especially need Walmart, Target, and K-Mart gift cards. Visit www.kyumh.org for ideas on more stores for Christmas gifts. NEW! KROGER PLUS CARDS COMMUNITY REWARDS PROGRAM Be sure and read the information on the right regarding how to connect your Kroger Plus card to KYUMH to enable our kids to benefit from your weekly grocery shopping. Once you link your Kroger Plus card to KYUMH, Kroger will donate 4% of your total purchase to us. This program replaces the old Kroger KYUMH gift card program by simplifying the process to your benefit. 2015 GOOD GIVING CHALLENGE This online giving event is sponsored by Bluegrass Community Foundation. The Good Giving Challenge runs 9:00 AM on November 3 to 11:59 PM
December 12. Donors who give during this period will have an opportunity to win thank you gifts from bluegrass area businesses. For more information, see the full details on page 5! THE 11th ANNUAL CHILDREN’S ADVOCACY DAY Children's Advocacy day is being held this year on Thursday, February 5, 2015. This is a wonderful event that puts you in direct contact with your legislators. Come join us as we unite in
support of Kentucky’s most vulnerable children. See our website for details as we enter the new year. YOUR PRAYERS Please keep our young people, staff and Board of Trustees in your prayers as we serve children today, and plan for the future. “ For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11
kroger card changes! New! Use Your Kroger Plus Card to help KYUMH! You no longer need a Kroger gift card to donate to our agency! Instead, you can now link your Kroger Plus Card to us so that 4% of your Kroger transaction amounts will be donated to us by Kroger. Last year we received over $11,000 of free money from proceeds raised by Kroger cards, so please follow these instructions to keep your Kroger purchases supporting us! You can sign up for a Kroger Plus card, or program your current card by following these simple steps online, or call us for assistance. 1. Visit www.kroger.com/communityrewards 2. Sign in to your account online or create an account 3. CHELSIE
PreviousResident By Heidi M. Weaver, PR & Communications Coordinator
By the age of 17, Chelsie was homeless. She had spent her childhood in turmoil, bouncing from one unsafe place to another. Chelsie’s mother abused her. When she stayed with her father, she was surrounded by drug abuse and drug trafficking. To make matters worse, from a young age, Chelsie was abused by her brother. With trauma on every side, there simply were no safe places for Chelsie. Suffering from so much exploitation, Chelsie began to skip school, experiment with drugs, and harm herself to cope with her pain. Eventually, things got bad enough that she ran away from home. After calling her social worker, Chelsie was transferred to the Residential 4

to believe in herself – which is what mattered most."
By 2012, after participating in three other residential programs, Chelsie didn’t think there was much hope left. But she soon found out that KYUMH was different. “Mary Kendall was the only place that helped me…the only place that gave me hope and profited me,” Chelsie says. The staff were “1000 times nicer” to her than in other placements. “You can feel if someone genuinely cares about what they’re doing,” she says.
During her time at the Mary Kendall campus, Chelsie says she was focused on helping the other girls in the program because she found it helped her too. Many of the girls would confide in her about things that were troubling them. Chelsie says she understood what they were going through and she was able to help them deal with it calmly. One day, when a staff member asked the girls to indicate which girl they respected the most, every single girl on campus said it was Chelsie. “I was so embarrassed,” she remembers. But she smiles as she remembers it. You can tell she knows she made a difference for others.
Clinical Director of the Mary Kendall (Owensboro) campus Angela Green says, "The most important thing that Chelsie learned with us is that we believed in her. I know it was hard for her to always trust that we had that faith, but she worked so hard to give us a chance that I think she started

GOOD GIVING GUIDE CHALLENGE Give, Win, and Share!
We are proud to announce we will be participating in the Good Giving Guide Challenge this year! The Good Giving Guide Challenge is a six-week online giving blitz, beginning on November 3rd and ending on December 12. Last year, over 1.7 million dollars were raised for local charities across the Bluegrass through this fun way to give online. When you donate online, not only do you become eligible to receive prizes, you make KYUMH eligible too! Please help us make this Christmas season of online giving a huge success by donating now and sharing with your friends! It's easy to give! Here's what you need to do. 1. Go to BGgives.org/kyumh
2. Enter Donation Amount to the right 3. Click Donate Now. This will redirect to the checkout page. 4. Click Checkout 5. Fill in Contact and Payment Information 6. Click Submit
Thank you for your ongoing support! the right words. “I had a therapist I really connected to,” she explains. Chelsie was able to graduate from school six months early with the assistance of the staff who helped her out. Chelsie says she had to get comfortable with her pain, so that it wouldn't break her down and make her suicidal whenever she thought about it. "I don't do the things I used to do to deal with pain or emotions," Chelsie says. You can hear the victory and pride in her voice at all she has overcome. Chelsie has chosen to cope with pain in healthy ways that she learned in our Residential Treatment program. It's helping her move forward each day. This young woman with a bright smile recalls moments of joy she shared with other residents, foster sisters, and staff members through the years. “You can’t hold onto those (bad) memories,” she
says," speaking of the years of abuse she experienced. Somehow, she’s not bitter about all the hard times she has been through. Chelsie now has her own place and is engaged to be married. Even today, two years after graduating from our program, Chelsie calls regularly to check in. We celebrate her victories and help her through hard times, just like many other youth across Kentucky. Chelsie is enrolled to begin classes towards her bachelor's degree to become a computer technician starting in December. Ms. Green says, "Chelsie has been through some really hard times, things that no child should ever endure, and she trusted us to be in her world. She has really come long way." We are so proud of all the progress she has made!
