e are making progress on our new facility in Nicholasville. Our Family Center (program building) is under roof; plumbers, electricians, and HVAC technicians are all hard at work. The last time I visited the property, I noticed insulation and sheetrock being installed. Recently, I walked through the grounds with one of our donors who is also a dear friend. He hadn’t seen the progress since November 2016 and he just kept saying, “Wow.” The historic home that was already on the property will soon be converted into our Leadership Center. This building will house

most of our administrative staff. We are adding approximately 5,000 square feet to this building including a basement and two stories. Demolition work on this building is underway in order to “shape” this one-time home into a usable office complex for our leadership. Foundation for the basement is being poured and we hope to have the building framed very soon. The link below will take you to a short video that gives you a “bird’s eye” view on the progress that’s been made. We believe that we are still on target to move to that facility in July. https://vimeo. com/204303293 I share all of this to say that we are approaching a point in our fundraising where we

are going to be reaching out to faithful friends like you to help make this dream a reality for the youth, that with your tremendous help, we continue to serve. It is our intention to contact you in the coming days more specifically about joining us in this historic moment of change. As always, please receive heartfelt thanks for your wonderful support. For His Children,

I Thank God Every Day for the Methodist Home

Deanna became the person she always knew she could be. By Devon Lindsey PR & Communications

D

eanna never thought she would go from being a ward of the state with a track record of stealing and fighting, to becoming an honor student, homecoming nominee, entrepreneur and loving mother. When she was a young girl, Deanna’s father, who was very abusive, abandoned her, leaving her mother to raise eight children. Her family, who once

lived in a comfortable house, was forced to live in government housing. Deanna, her mother and seven siblings struggled to find money for food. “We were hungry; I mean we ate sugar and ketchup sandwiches for dinner sometimes,” said Deanna. Deanna tried to provide for her family using any means necessary. She stole candy from the local swimming pool concession stand and sold it at school to pay for groceries, but was soon caught.

At 11-years-old, Deanna found herself in and out of court for theft, truancy and fighting. She was eventually placed in state custody. “The way I dealt with things was to lash out,” said Deanna. After multiple failed placements, Deanna’s social worker decided on KyUMH. Deanna’s life completely transformed once she arrived. “The first nights I stayed there, I had nightmares and slept under the bed. One of the staff members

would stay up with me until I felt safe enough to sleep,” said Deanna. From then on, with spiritual and emotional counseling, Deanna started to become the person she always knew she could be. “The most important thing was God coming into my life there on that campus.” Deanna’s love for the Lord is always present when caring for her five children and she plans on being a foster parent soon. You made a meaningful life possible for Deanna.

“One of the staff members would stick by me until I felt safe enough to sleep. “

Deana uses the lessons she learned in life to care for her own family.

Standing Strong Because of You The unyielding support of our donors makes this move possible.

BUILD with Us

$15 Million Capital Campaign Update By Melinda R. Smith, Vice President of Advancement

ou, our donors, are the true heroes. We would not be here without your support. For 27 years, I have served here and seen miraculous things happen, not only in the lives of our young people, but also through our donors. Years ago, a man named Mr. Miracle (I can’t make this up) walked in after seeing our sign on US 60, felt compelled to give a gift and wrote a check that covered the cost of a 15-passenger-van just when we needed it. Over and over again, just like that, God has used you, his people, to provide miracles here. Now we are again in a place where, only through God’s miraculous intervention, can we achieve our goals. We have a new campus with new residential facilities to better meet the complex needs of youth in our care with histories of abuse and neglect. Also from this new campus, we will launch expanded services for early intervention. Rather than waiting for circumstances to escalate to where the child has to be removed, we will go into the home and work with the family.

Over 145 years ago, before there were state social welfare programs, caring people created a home for widows and orphans. We are now called to again step into the void where there is not enough state resources and this time it is for early intervention. Research shows, healing a broken family before a child is in danger, is the best way to prevent trauma. With God’s help through you, we can profoundly change the course of these families’ lives. Because of you, we are moving into this future. Because of you, the new dining hall is being painted, the walking path is being laid and the gymnasium floor is being placed. Because of you, kids who were living in unsafe homes and who might never have had sufficient food, will be in the safety of new rooms, eating healthy meals, shooting basketball in our new gym and walking by the lovely pond soaking up God’s beautiful creation. Because of you, the lives of families will be changed by healing in their own homes so children won’t have to experience the trauma of being removed. And because of you, answering God’s call to

be His messengers in this world, we will reach more children than ever before. I challenge you to continue your mission through your gifts of prayer, time and money. Continue to Build with Us and transform lives. For what God has done for us, we give our lives back in service. May God bless you.

Together, Let’s Keep Kids Safe KyUMH supporters rally with us to advocate for Kentucky children.

By Devon Lindsey PR & Communications

K

yUMH staff and supporters rallied at the state capitol in support of bills that would protect the safety and well-being of Kentucky Children on February 9, 2017. This year’s Children’s Advocacy Day focus was to

raise awareness of the need for effective substance abuse recovery programs in Kentucky, such as KyUMH’s Next Step program. Since its inception in 2014, the Next Step program has changed the lives of over 300 families and ushered children and teens on the path to recovery. The program serves counties all over

Kentucky, including Fayette, and has yielded impressive results. Throughout the day, staff and supporters met with state representatives and discussed the importance of substance abuse services as the only hope some Kentuckians have to lead a productive life. KyUMH cannot show enough appreciation to St. Paul UMC

for hosting and their dedicated years of partnering with us to change lives. For information on Children’s Advocacy Day 2018, contact Devon Lindsey at devon.lindsey@kyumh.org.

gifts to help us create a “thank you” video for all of those who support us. Asbury University graduates Brandon, Adam and their friend Zane ventured onto our campus with several pounds of equipment and enthusiasm. “Each person we interviewed showed us what it means to have compassion for our fellow man,” said Brandon. “They

demonstrated the love of Christ to those in need.” The video shoot consisted of staff sharing their appreciation for how donors have made the difference in their specific areas. Programs represented included Next Step (substance abuse recovery program), Safe Haven (Independent Living) and residential.

The video is available on the KyUMH Facebook page. Stay tuned for more exciting videos in the future with the help of this amazing team.

THANK YOU FOR SHOWING

THE LOVE!

Right: Edythe Coleman recently celebrated her 106th birthday and asked her church to donate to KyUMH in her honor. What a lovely gesture from a lovely lady! Left: Every year, United Methodist Women from many local churches send Valentine’s cards and treats to our kids. Thank you so much for your warm hearts and loving kindness!
