Last week, I participated in the memorial service for a dear friend and mentor. I’m sad that he is gone from our presence in this earthly life, but I rejoice in his eternal homecoming. When I think about all that my mentor gave me by way of teaching and coaching, I take note of two things. First and foremost, he cultivated in me a desire for excellence. He did all things, “as unto the Lord” with a vision for his heavenly home. Secondly, he invited me to journey with him in understanding the mysterious and holy nature of the Church. He earnestly wanted to know God and to please our Creator. He was ready to go home. The longer I’m on this journey, the more I realize that the road is ever new and uncharted. Yet even when this road leads me into unexplored territory, there is something profoundly familiar about the path. Each day holds tasks that challenge my abilities and encourage me to become more like Christ than I have been previously.

It is not lost on me that the journeys of God’s Old Testament people were nearly always centered around coming home. The importance of home was central then and it still is today. Much has changed since my childhood days of working on the farm, but the challenges of the Christian pilgrimage continue to cultivate in me a striving to prayerfully approach each day with a vision of home, asking God to help me surrender my life in ways I have been afraid or unwilling to do up to that moment.
As I look back from where I've come, I’m remembering how different my childhood was in comparison to youth today. There wasn’t much “technology” then, except for a television that was connected to an antenna. We had about three stations that we could watch. There were chores to complete every day and there were seasons of planting and harvest on the farm where we worked hard for days on end.
Much like the Israelites, my mentor, and each of us, I believe the greatest need for the youth we serve is for them to find their home. Thank you for helping us to continue to meet that need.

United Methodists Sway Legislators By Melinda Ryles-Smith, Vice President of Advancement
Several years ago, children’s homes in Kentucky faced an emergency situation when the governor at that time decided to trim his budget in the middle of the year, issuing an emergency regulation which would lower funding to children’s homes by 12%. The adjustment would come as a potentially fatal blow, causing smaller agencies that did not have church support to close. Several homes, including us, started calling supporters to rally help. Through our United Methodist Women’s groups, we were able to reach a lot of people quickly, asking them to contact the governor’s office and plead for reconsideration to the budget adjustments. Within two hours we received a call from the governor’s office asking us to “call off the United Methodists” who were flooding his phone lines with calls. Because we raised our voices together, the governor decided
not to make such severe cuts to children’s homes because his constituents made it clear that many people, especially the United Methodists, would be very upset with him if he proceeded. A core belief of our United You Are A Force of 1000! Methodist Church is in social justice and our responsibility It is a well-known rule of thumb to legislators and to take a stand for “the least grass roots lobbyists that for every constituent who takes the time to contact a legislator about of these”. John Wesley, even an issue, there are 1000 more concerned about into the height of his ministry, that same issue. Legislators want to know what continued to dedicate Fridays their constituents think about issues so to go serve the poor. This is that they can represent their district well why, every two years, when the and be re-elected, so when they Kentucky legislature meets to create are contacted by one of their their biennial budget, we gather with constituents, it gets their other groups advocating for Kentucky’s attention! at-risk children. Our presence at the “Children’s Advocacy Day at the Capitol” reminds legislators that we want our state tax dollars to fund important issues benefitting Kentucky’s families.
DID YOU KNOW?
Children’s Advocacy Day at the Capitol In the 2014 budget session, Children’s Advocacy Day at the Capitol will be held on January 16, 2014. Each year, the United Methodist Women and The Kentucky United Methodist Homes for Children and Youth partner to host those who want to join us that day. We meet first at St. Paul UMC in Frankfort, receive information about pertinent legislation, answer your questions, and then ride together over to the Capitol for the Rally and to visit individual legislators. We help you feel comfortable about speaking to your legislator. Children’s Advocacy Network Even if you can’t join us that day, you can still be an advocate by joining our Children’s Advocacy Network. When you send us your contact information, we will notify you of important legislation affecting Kentucky’s children and the information you need to call your legislators. These calls take no more than five minutes, but are critically important to our legislative advocacy success.

“Drugs destroyed my life.” Dustin told me. The disgust in his tone was unmistakable. Clearly, this young man had changed his life. The seventeen year-old’s clear blue eyes were filled with hope and inspiration. But they weren’t always that way. Dustin started smoking at age twelve and by age fifteen, the cigarettes turned to marijuana. Dustin became violent, destroying his own home, starting fights, and stealing to fund his drug habit. “The hardest thing was when I had to have him arrested,” his father explained to me. Dustin began hitting and cursing at his dad one day and no one could control him. “My family was scared of me,” Dustin explained.

Dustin ran, but the police found him and arrested him. Jeff explained how hard it was to see his son in shackles after spending a week in jail. But he knew he had to make the call. “He might hate me for the rest of my life, but I don’t care, as long as he’s alive!” Jeff told a family member that day after calling the police. “Watching the spiral he was going through, I didn’t think he’d come out of it…but I’m proud of him. He’s coming along.” Dustin was full of smiles. It was hard to believe that the young man in front of me, eyes full of hope and dreams for his future, enthusiasm and excitement pouring from his every word, was ever on such a destructive path. The affection between Dustin and Francie, his Kentucky United Methodist Homes for Children &
Youth case manager, was evident from the first moment we arrived. “Did I tell you? My job wants to promote me to be a manager as soon as I turn 18!” he glowed. “It’s because of you, because of all of you, that I have accomplished any of this.” Francie, congratulating and praising him, set the record straight. “You did this Dustin. It’s because of all your hard work!” And hard work it was. Francie explained to me that Dustin was a good kid who made some mistakes in the past, and he was a perfect fit for The Kentucky United Methodist Homes for Children & Youth’s Home Monitoring Program. He had to work hard to earn trust back and to get back on the right path, but he did it. Dustin says, “I passed my drug tests and I never went

back. I’m going to walk away if someone tries to start a fight. I’m in the good life now...I’m back!” Dustin is thankful for the work of The Kentucky United Methodist Homes for Children & Youth and his case manager. “Everyone was missing me and even my little sister was scared of me,” he said with tears brimming in his eyes. “I made a decision…It was time to get my act together…I told my sister, ‘You don’t need to be scared anymore, your brother is back.' She started crying. Look at me, I get emotional too,” he said while swiping the tears from his eyes. With remorse in his voice he told me, “I was a pothead and a fighter.” “Who are you now?” I asked him. “I’m an amazing kid! I’m back to who I was.” His father agrees. “The old Dustin has come back!” These days, Dustin is enjoying his new lease on life. He is thankful for all who have supported him: his family, his mentors, and the staff, friends, and supporters of The Kentucky United Methodist Homes for Children and Youth. Instead of throwing his energy into fighting and doing drugs, Dustin channels it to rebuild vehicles with his dad, build his own bicycles, and practice archery. “This next year will be a fresh start for you, won’t it?” I asked him. “What will you do?” “I am going to graduate!” Dustin exclaimed, hope and anticipation spilling from every word. Laughing and shaking his head at his son’s antics as he performed tricks for us on his bike, Jeff said, “He’s turned completely around…I’m proud of him."
