BIOGR APHY
EX HIB I T ION
Kyu Won Lee is a communication designer who loves typography, branding, publication design, motion graphic, packaging design and illustration. She focused on Visual Art during her high school and shifted her focus to Communication Design for the university because she was drawn to clear logics and the power of function and communication behind design works. As much as she loves structures and organization, she enjoys surprises and rule-breaking moments. When not working, she takes photos, doodles on her sketchbook, and plays the piano.

Gwi Magazine PROJECT
DESCRIPTION
Publication
Gwi (Ear) Magazine is a magazine that listens to stories of Korean students studying in Western schools. By fully translating all the content (interviews, articles, information, etc) from Korean to English, I wanted to make sure that different voices of Korean students are heard and considered by people outside of their community and I wanted to reveal some of the struggles and challenges that these Korean students undergo. I explored duality and tension through diagonal composition and typography.

Sleep Magazine PROJECT
DESCRIPTION
Publication
Sleep Magazine is a light-read magazine that reveals interesting facts and stories about sleep and it is ideal for readers who do not want to read heavy content. The motif of the progressive colour change of the background is derived from sleep cycle theory and I intended viewers to have similar experience while reading the magazine. I created a flow in the level of content that progressively gets deeper and interesting; thus, the table of content wheel also reflects this idea of sleep cycle.

1984 Redesign PROJECT
DESCRIPTION
Book Redesign
I redesigned the cover and select spreads of George Orwell’s renowned fiction, 1984. I was limited to only use black and white typography without any illustrative elements and imagery and I chose Leitura typeface to convey seriousness and foreboding sensation. Words and sentences that I created into type illustrations are excerpts from the actual text (a sentence, three words and one word) and I intended to provide cinematic experience for the readers.

VanCity Vogue Magazine PROJECT
DESCRIPTION
Publication
I designed a modern blog-style fashion magazine for a local fashion social media company, VanCity Vogue. This magazine consists of 124 pages of editorial writings, interviews, advertisings, photoshoots and various fashion and beauty related contents. When designing the cover and the entire layouts, I considered typographic hierarchies, compositional harmonies and unified theme that reflects simplistic black and white modern style of the company.

Medical Branding
PBI (Personalized Biomarkers Inc.) is a new diabetic medicine diagnosis company based on the Life Sciences Institute at the University of British Columbia. As a group, we established a brand identity through research analysis, probe, collaborative design workshop, etc. We came up with the tagline of “Your Health in Good Hands and developed consistant branding system accordingly. My contributions include art direction, logo design, website design, mobile application interface, brand guidebook, presentation slides, branding campaign and social media design.

DESCRIPTION “Geometric Warmth” is an imaginary typopgrahy exhibition project that I collaborated with two other students to highlight Adrian Frutiger’s typeface, Avenir that has both geometric and humanistic aspects. To communicate these qualities, we displayed expressive painting on three canvases along with three information panels and a vinyl-cut pull quote and title. Also, we prepared an interactive activity for children to paint and colour in shapes of letters on the poster that we designed as a take-away material. My roles were art direction, overall layout design, activity design and creating promotional materials.

Silent Study Cafe Branding PROJECT
DESCRIPTION
Typeface Design + Branding
I created my own writing tool using pinetree needles and using the tool, I created a set of lowercase alphabets and digitized it into a fully functional font using Robofont software. Then I decided to create a brand identity of an imaginative cafe, “Shh”, which is a silent study cafe. Because of the scratchy texture of the font, I felt that the sound of “Shh” resonates very well. I designed a paper bag, folded menus, business cards, an envelop, and CD.

SnacKit Packaging Redesign PROJECT
DESCRIPTION
Packaging Design
I redesigned Canada’s leading seafood brand, Ocean’s SnacKit which was overly packaged. By reducing waste down to the core and changing the design that reflects the brand values of ‘sustainability’, and ‘ecofriendliness’, I enhanced the efficiency, sustainability and branding of the packagings which better communicate the brand’s quality and the product’s attributes.

I made an opening kinetic typography animation of a Korean rapper, Beenzino’s song “Dali Van Picasso”. Because the original song uses both English and Korean, I wanted to explore how a form of one language can inform different meanings written in another language through animation of typefaces.
