MORE THAN A DEGREE

Make the most of your time at York St John University by taking advantage of the extra opportunities on offer. These are great ways to extend your skills beyond those you gain directly through your course. They are rewarding experiences which will give you something extra to help you stand out as you start your career.

Study abroad

Studying abroad is an incredible opportunity to experience a different culture, build an international network of friends, and gain a new perspective on your subject area. We have partner universities all over the world, and we will help you find one that fits with your course and your aspirations. This option is available on most of our undergraduate courses. I now have friends from the USA, France, Germany, Bulgaria, Egypt, Finland, Colombia and Australia. This is the thing I’ll treasure the most. No matter where I am in the world a friend won’t be too far away.

Year in Industry

You can gain extensive work experience alongside your degree with our Year in Industry option. This is an opportunity to apply your knowledge in the workplace and get a feel for your future career. The Year in Industry takes place between your second and third year of study. It extends your degree to 4 years. Our Careers, Placements and Student Opportunities team can help you find a placement that fits your career goals.

Students as Researchers

This scheme gives you the chance to get involved with paid research work at York St John University, alongside our academic staff. This could give you the opportunity to attend external conferences or have research published in academic journals.

Student internships

A York St John University internship is a chance to develop key skills, gain valuable work experience and start to build your professional network. A student internship will boost your CV and kickstart a potential future career. All internships are project based and are paid roles. Most are part time and last between 4 to 12 weeks.

Volunteering

We can help you find volunteering placements in the local community and around the world. This is a great opportunity to gain new skills, meet new people and make a difference. We work with charities across York, as well as 5 international partner organisations with projects that could take you as far as Fiji or Uganda.

This whole experience has helped me grow and I have been so happy. I’ve made great friends, volunteered for the first time and loved it, and I’m going to Uganda in summer to help build playgrounds. To be a part of all this has been amazing.
