This Atlas collects the research work undertaken on fifty case studies of dwelling practices selected by each student in his/her own country among situations of personal knowledge.

The fifty case studies have been rearranging in the following four typologies: Family + Family [Type A]; Family + Adult/s [Type B]; Adult/s + Adult/s [Type C]; Single Adult [Type D].

The location of this case of study is on the street Av. Los Patriotas in the San Manuel District, Lima, Perú.

The apartment belongs to a group of three people blood related.

The grandmother, named Maria who is 92 years old, her daughter Maritsa that is an unemployed women of 59 years old, and finally, Vanessa, the grand-daughter of 25 years old who is studing architecture.

As María haves Alzheimer and limited physical condition, she mostly depends on her daughter Maritsa. This is also why they both sleep on the same room and share most of the comun activities such us having lunch, dinning and watching TV. For this reason they will be considerated as one nucleo.

In the other hand, is Vanessa, who will be the second nucleo. She haves a very active life and she rarely spends time at home. She wakes up early on the morning and goes to study at her university. During the evenings she work in a little architecture studio so finally she arrives home betweeon 8 p.m- 9 p.m.

She arrives home just in time to have dinner with her grandmother and mother.

During the weekend is almost the same dinamic. This is because Vanessa works for the university or stays at her room with her door closed. She really enjoys her privacy. As a result, the times and places where they meet during the week are almost the same than the ones of the weekend.

The living room and dinning room are located in the same room. Here is where the three integrants of the home, and also their guests share and spend time together.

Third floor

A three-generation faamily in one house.

This is a three generation house composed with two families and one two year old child. The two families are my uncle, auntie, cousin and his wife and their child. The house is quite big, which is four floors and about 50 smq per floor.

Ground floor is composed with kitchen and living room with two front and back gardens. First floor is used by my cousin's family. And second floor is used by my uncle and his wife. There is one free room on this floor, it is prepared for my cousin's next child. On the last floor there is a garden with a religion room. In Taiwan we are mostly Buhdism, and in traditional house we place a religion space for praying...etc. It is normally used by my aunt, she comes up to place fruits, flowers every morning.

My cousin and his wife are working, so during the day time they hire nanny to take care of their child in the house. My uncle and his wife are retired, however sometimes they still have to work in their company, so afternoon they're usually not at home as well. During the afternoon the house is mainly used by the nanny and the child. In the evening is the time all the family back to home. They usually have dinner together everyday. My aunt is usually the one who cooks. After dinner they spend quality time together in the living room. During the weekend, my cousin usually brings his family outside to have some small trips, my uncle and aunt instead stay at home mostly. They like plants so they spend a lot of time in different gardens at home.

In my opinion, this is a nice house for three-generation family. It is easily seen problem for a three-generation family the conflict of less private space, this house each family has their own floor, so they could spend quality time all together however also have space for their own when it's needed.

However in my opinion, as discussed in the lesson, when people have blood relations live together, there tends to have different level in the house. For example, the kitchen is mainly only used by my aunt, she takes care of the meal everyday. On one side it is nice for my cousin family that they do not have to cook and also save money to stay with parents. However it limits their privacy space, that my cousin's family has less access to the kitchen and living room due to the respect to the elders. Also they don't invite friends over for dinner one reason that the kitchen is mostly used by my aunt, also that the elders are home as well. I think it is one important issue when it comes to the design of three generation house.

Four generations gather together in this big and diverse house. The three older sons of Maribel can already be considered as independent nucleuses as they are already in their 30s and working. The younger one, María, is still a student and depends on Maribel. Maribel’s father, Mariano, moved with them a few years ago.

Angel

4 generations Maribel has lived in this house since 2004, when it was built. They moved here from an apartment in the same area because they needed more space since they were already 6 at the time: Maribel, her husband, and her 4 sons and daughters.

Some years ago she got divorced so the husband doesn’t live with them anymore, but the four sons have stayed in the house for the moment: Ángel, 37; Carlos, 35; Laura, 30; and María, 19. Three years ago Keyra was born so a new member was added to the family.

Mariano, Maribel’s father, moved in two years ago, after his wife passed away, because he didn’t want to live alone at his age. However, he still needs some intimacy and space for himself sometimes.

The reason the three older sons are still living with their mother is mainly economical. None of them has a stable job and they keep changing from one position to another, so they cannot afford a house for their own.

On top of all of this, there is an eighth ‘member of the family’: Molly, the tortoise they’ve had for nine years now. Not long ago they also had a dog, Lussy, and a cat, Martín.

Although their house is big enough to host all of them, cohabitation is sometimes difficult due to the big differences in ages, habits, timetables and likes, even if they are all blood-related.

‘I would like to have a shower instead of a bathtub, as it would be more accessible for me.’

‘I love having a TV in my bedroom where I can watch whatever I want at any time.’

Ángel: ‘I like the indepndency of my room on the upper level, as well as being able to watch the sunset and the mountains from my window.’

Carlos: ‘I love to have my own room on the upper level where no-one else enters.’

Laura: ‘My room is my refugee, where I can do whatever I want, even smoke, which I can’t do in the rest of the house.’

María: ‘My room is very spatious.’

Apartment in Mariano Comense In 2013 Caterina and Marco moved to this apartment in Mariano Comense after that Caterina’s husband passed away and their family house in Cabiate had become too big for only two people. Marco is the only one of four children who, not being married, doesn’t have the need to move elsewhere and remained to live with his parents. He works in a town near the apartment and so he is comfortable where he is.

The relationship between mother and son is perfect, live in contact has many advantages: the mother, for example, is an elderly woman and Marco can help her for any need, she looks after the house and meals, so when he gets back from work is all ready.

The relationship brings benefits to both and not a single problem, the house is large enough to ensure the necessary privacy: they both have separate bedrooms and bathrooms and share only the rooms of the living area. As the night area of the house is always closed and private, the other spaces always welcome many guests: the other children, grandchildren and many friends often go to visit them. Every Sunday they host a lunch or a dinner with relatives, this is the reason of the large tables. Even special occasions are spent in the house: at Christmas the big living room welcomes a dozen guests.

Caterina is very independent, she still drives the car and cares for her needs alone. Despite age, she is very active, she usually spends time doing houseworks and relaxing.

Marco, as a worker, spends a lot of time out of the house: when he is at home he sits on the couch or listens to music and reads in his room, he tends to be alone.

A “typical day” is easy to describe: they have breakfast together, then Marco goes to work while Caterina does the housework and watch tv. At about half past twelve she prepares lunch and Marco come back from work, then have lunch together, then Marco returns to work until late afternoon. They have dinner together and then go into their rooms until bedtime: Marco likes to listen to music and read, and also Caterina reads a lot.

The spaces of the house work well on the whole, they believe that there are no critical points that work bad.

After I left home and study in Milan, their life becames very boring. They wake up, go to work, go home in the evening, watch tv, play computer and sleep. But this is how it work, and they enjoy it a lot.

History of the building It’s a typical ‘Khrushchyovka‘ (low-cost apartment building), built in 1980s’ in a military community and provide for soldier’s family. Use brick wall and concrete panels, has 6 stories (different by Italy’s stantard, the ground floor in Italy, is the first floor in China), no elevator, very small kitchen and toilet.

Family members Chen hui is my mom, she lives with me and my father, Yan Hongsheng.

She is an engineer and officer belongs to a national construction company.

Sometimes she goes to her parents’ house for a couple of days with me and my dad duing the festival, and sometimes she invite her parents to our apartment.

My dad, Usually outside, working, meeting or hanging out with friends.

When he is at home, he will sit in front of his desk and start playing computergames (or working, who knows) And me, always stay in my own room, hardly get out (until now) Present situation about the family We’ve live in here over 20 years. 2 years ago we bought a new flat in northern Beijing, but we still living in this apartment, and we will keep it in our hand in the future.

Inconvenient Speaking about the inconvenient and uncomfortable part of this apartment, most are because of the age of it. Some are because of the damage of the furniture and the decoration. The following points are often mentioned: There are too few storage space (actually it’s already a lot after we renew the apartment twice, but my parents usually keep everything they have and never through them) Kitchen is a bit small, and the space under the cupboard often remains dirty, because it’s hard to clean.

Study room is usually a bit wet, uncomfortable to sleep down there.

Ventilation of the bathroom is bad. It’s usually very wet and slippery, so it probably breeds a lot of bacteria.

A grown up son Location_ Where?

Luca, Arturo and Anna live in Lomagna, a small town in Brianza, an area among the city of Monza, Lecco and Milan.

Since Luca’s birth, they live together in a flat located at the third floor of a building. The apartment is quite big, with two bedrooms, one bathroom, a living room, a kitchen and a slumber room.

Nucleus_ Who? The family is composed by two nucleus, the elderly couple and their grown up son. They live together since the birth of Luca.

Both parents are retired so they spend almost all the day at home, taking care of the flat, reading or watching TV. On the contrary, Luca is a business consultant and works in his office from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. every day during the week.

Life_ How? Luca wakes up early in the morning, at the same time of his father. For this reason sometimes it’s difficult for them to combine their morning activities in order to avoid conflict in using some spaces, like the only one bathroom they have.

Anna wakes up later and the main activities she does at home regard the housework and her favorite hobby: sewing.

Arturo likes taking care of his vegetable gardens and he’s very proud of it. In age with age the afternoon, he goes to the senior center where he chats or plays cards activity activity his friends.

In the evening, when Luca returns home, the family has dinner together and the son ends with cleaning the kitchen. While the parents stay in the living room, watching TV or reading books, he prefers staying in his bedroom, working or listening to music. All the components of the family go to bed almost at the same time. During the weekends, daily activities are almost the same because very often Luca goes out, mainly to the mountain with friends, while his parents stay at home. If Luca stays at home, he helps Arturo and Anna in doing the housework or sometimes he stays on his own in his bedroom.

Problems_ What and why?

Family life is not so easy, even more in a situation of a grown up son still living with his parents. So, there are some conflicts between the inhabitants in using the different spaces. Moreover, in an apartment that is not well furnished, there are some conflicts even with the equipment of the rooms: Conflicts between inhabitants: _ The use of the only one bathroom in the morning and evening.

Need: a simple toilet, just wc and sink, to avoid conflicts of times. _ Contemporary use of the kitchen, very small, by two people or more.

Need: a larger room, with a large work plane to prepare meals, eventually for more people.

Conflicts with furniture: _ The absence of a studio to let Luca works comfortably. Need: little studio.

The positive aspect is that the flat is very big, even if bad furnished.

Fabrizio and Sabine met in Milan in 1992. Sabine was born in 1957 in Stuttgart, Germany and moved to Italy in 1987 to study Italian Literature.

Fabrizio comes from Pescara and moved to Milan to study Management in 1974. After they met, they started living together in an apartment in Monte PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK EDUCATIONAL PRODUCT Generoso in Milan. In 1995 their first daughter Saskia was born and they decided to buy an apartment in Via Sabbatini in the Bocconi district. The flat is aproximately 112 sq. mt. big and could soon host also the second daughter Marlene, born in 1997. Today, 20 years later, the family still lives in the same flat, even if it went through some radical changes.

The original house had two big bedrooms of aproximately 17 sq. mt. each, one for the parents and one for the daughters and a small studio of 5 sq.mt..

After some years it was clear that the needs of the family had changed: the daughters deserved a room each and Fabrizio and Sabine decided they didn’t want to sleep in the same room anymore. Therefore, in 2011 the restoration works began: from the two bedrooms and the studio four small rooms were obtained; the second bathroom was increased of size and new storage space was provided. The bedrooms of Fabrizio, Saskia and Marlene are quite small PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK EDUCATIONAL PRODUCT but allow the execution all the necessary activities. To furnish the space in a functional and personal way most of the forniture was designed by the architect himself. Sabine’s bedroom was thought to be the biggest one to The apartament before the restoration works allow the tutoring classes that she propose to students and workers. of 2011 Due to the fact that every inhabitant deserves his own “special room” which of course was not included in the original plan of the house, the common space results small and fragmented. The family spends most of the time together in the kitchen that is the most comfortable of the common spaces or in their rooms.

A new flatmate

At the beginning of September 2016 one of the daughters, Saskia, left Milan to go studying in Lisboa. The family commonly decided to rent the room that would have been left free to a student to economically sustain the daughter’s experience abroad.

Francesco is 19 years old and he’s been living in Trento until he decided to study management at Bocconi university in Milan. Marlene got to know him through mutual friends and proposed him to live together with her and her parents in the sister’s room.

According to Sabine and Fabrizio, it was really hard to establish a connection with Francesco since the beginning. He is a silent person who likes to spend time on his own in his room. He hardly had any guests at home even if the family agreed on it. The family was used to spend most of the dinners together and he would have been welcomed to join this convivial times, but Francesco had a different schedule and daily routine from the other cohabitants. Therefore, it was really hard to spend time with him or just to cross him in the apartment.

Marlene and Francesco spent much time together, they liked to watch movies and listen to music together in Francesco’s room.

A SMALL EXTENDED FAMILY Where The location of this nucleus is Monza , a city near Milan.

All three were born in Milan, but Marta and Giovanna have always lived in Monza. Instead Giusi lives in Monza since 2012.

Who Marta is a friend of mine. She is 24 years old and last year she nished his studies in economics. She lives in Monza with her mother, Giovanna, and and Giusy, a friend of them. Three nights a weeks , Marta’s boyfriend is their guest.

All the members of the house work all day long. Marta works in Milan from 8.30 a.m. to 8/9 p.m. She wakes up at 7p.m , has a really quick breakfast and than runs to the station to take the train till Sesto San Giovanni and than she takes the tube, the Red Line , till Cadorna.

So she stays at home during the night and the week-end, even if she works even on Saturday in a bridal shop in Monza, from 9 a.m. till 7.30p.m. and she spends most of her Saturday nights and Sundays at her boyfriend’s house in Bergamo.

The third member of this nucleus is Giusi, a friend of Giovanna. She’s been living with them from 2012 . She is a pastry chef in a famous bakery in Monza, and she works a lot from 7 a.m. till 17.30 p.m., on Saturdays as well.

In short, the inhabitants of this stay at home just a little bit during the day.

The house is quite big and it consists of a kitchen with a nice terrace they used a lot during spring and summer; a dining room, which is just outside the kitchen with a big table where they have dinner with family or friends.

Her mother, Giovanna , is 54 years old and she works in a Real Estate company in Milan. Her daily routine goes from 7.15 a.m. to 9 p.m. She really loves her work and just like Marta, she works on Saturday all day long.

In the living room there are two sofas and the TV and that’s where they stay to relax during the evening.

Each inhabitant has her own bedroom. Bedrooms are on the left side of the hallway and the bathroom is at the end of it.

In their opinion, that at is perfect for three people and they don’t have problems living all together because they are like a family.

The only problem is the position of the apartment, as it is very cold in winter and too hot in summer.

Before living in this at, they changed other two houses in Monza, as they prefer living there even if Milan would be a better choice for practical reasons.

Interview: The nucleus is composed by three users: two permament and one temporary.

The first two are: Luigi, my grandfather, and Anna, his caregiver. The temporary user is Raffaella, my aunt.

The owner of this flat is my grandfather; he’s 90 years old and self-sufficient.

He recently had a surgery, so he started to spend a lot of time at home during the day and he also started to host a caregiver.

He usually gets up around 8:30, has breakfast with Anna and then he does some phisical exercises using rehabilitation machines. Since he spent a lot of time at the hospital he has to re-start moving step by step: he walks around the kitchen and the livingroom with Anna taking care about him.

It’s already 11:00, time to rest on the table in the livingroom and read the newspaper, while Anna starts cooking.

At 12.00 he has lunch with her in the kitchen. From 14:00 until 16:30 he does a long afternoon nap. During this time frame Anna dedicated herself to domestic trades. The flat is located at the fisrt floor of a small building and has a garden beneath with a vegetable garden; she enjoys taking care of it. After that, he drinks a tea it in front of a book or the television.

20:00 means dinner time. It doesn’t matter if it’s an italian team or not but after eating it’s time to watch the football game sitted on his red armchair in the livingroom.

The kitchen is equipped with another television, so Anna can stay there to watch whatever she wants.

Afternoons can be very different: there can be a visit of a friend or a relative.

This happen mostly during the weekends.

I might say that weekends are kind of “exceptiomnal days” because my aunt comes to the house.

She lives out of the city, she comes to stay with the rest of the family and to allow Anna to have some spare time.

The problem is that the flat has only one extra-bed so, the caregiver has to move to another uninhabited apartment on the same floor also owned by my grandfather.

Personal comment: The fact that the relationship with the caregiver is very strong, doesn’t produce a problem of “privacy” for my grandfather. They share the spaces without embarrassment. They also have some outdoor spaces where to spend the spare time.

Maybe, there’re some critical issues about the apartment like the presence of only one bathroom and the lack of a space where my grandfather can do his “gym”.

But, the worst thing is that the caregiver is forced to move to another flat during the weekend. The flat is not suitable to host a temporary user.

Giulia’s stepfamily Giulia and her mother moved in the flat when Giulia was 10; none of them thought that in a few years a new family would grow in the same flat. Tania, Giulia’s mother re-married in 2010 and a couple of years later Riccardo was born. Giulia had to learn how to share the space and the three adults tried to find a new balance while the family was growing.

Brief home description Giulia lives in a at with her family; the flat has two bedrooms, a small kitchen, a living room, one main bathroom and a tiny laundry/toilet.

Routine In Giulia’s family the daily routine is based on the work and school hours.

Giulia works as a real estate agent from Monday to Saturday 10-19. Her mother, Tania, has a full time job with a rota on different shifts, mainly she works in the weekends and in the mornings during the week. Claudio, Giulia’s stepfather, has fixed working hours during the week. The children go to kindergarten and afer school stay at their grandmother’s, unless Tania has the afternoon off.

As a consequence the daily routine of the members of the family tend to converge early in the morning and in the evenings. In the morning everyone, except for Claudio, wakes up at 7; children get dressed, while Tania and Giulia have showers, and then after they have breakfast in the living room they go out. Claudio at this point wakes up and quickly gets ready for work. The house is empty in the morning and usually until late afternoon.

The main space used is the living room: children play, Claudio watches the television, Tania stays with the kids, uses the computer and then prepares dinner. When Giulia arrives at 19.30 they all have dinner together in the living room, because it has a large enough table. After dinner they take turns to have showers and in the meanwhile the other people stay the living room. At 21.30 kids go to sleep and the adults try to find a space for themselves. This is usually the tensest moment because they have very different interests and they argue about space and the activity.

The most common exception to this routine is when on Sundays they are all at home and they have lunch with their grandmother or other relatives, this doesn’t change that much the way the space is used, but the living room is even more crowded.

The weak point of the house is certainly the dimensions, because it was designed for 2-3 people. Even if the furniture was during time adapted to the increasing number of people, there are strains due to the difference in age and interests among the members of the family.

Dima’s Place Dima is 23 years old engineer from Russia and he is doing a longterm internship at Harvard university in Cambridge. He has been renting a room in a shared apartment for almost a year now. The reason to share is incredibily high renting price in Boston area, which is considered the second most expensive real estate market in the US. The flat is occupying the entire last floor of a small three storey wooden building in the quiet suburban area of the town.

Other three tenants are young Americans.

Minimalist room Dima’s room is only 7 square meters big and it seems satisfactory although he admits that he needs more space when someone comes to visit him and stays at his place. When talking about his room, Dima is very proud about having a very minimal amount of personal things as well as furniture: only a bed, an antique chair, some clothes hangers and a suitcase, serving as a bed side table.

Individualist couple Despite being together for over 5 years, Bella and Leo live in separate rooms to get enough individual privacy. They tend to have very different work schedules and, moreover, Bella especially needs some time to be alone to read and paint. They get together in one of their rooms in the evenings and during the weekends, usually watching movies, sometimes giving Dima a hard time to fall asleep with the noise they make.

Moreover, Bella and Leo usually cook and eat together, too. They are trying to eat at home as often as possible, thus keeping a lot of personal food, cooking devices and containers in the kitchen, always leaving things in a mess for quite some time after use.

Dima and Birch avoid cooking in general because all surfaces in the kitchen seem to be under constant monopoly of the couple.

The same problem also happens with the storage spaces of the bathroom.

Escapist attitude Dima says that he tries to stay as much as he can at the laboratory even working overtime because he doesn’t enjoy his life at home.

He avoids his neighbors everytime he needs to use common spaces and is very frustrated with the permanent mess in the kitchen. He is sure that most of the problems arise from the lack of friendly communication between the tenants, which is almost impossible to initiate without a living room in his opinion. Another important issue for Dima is poor sound insulation between the rooms which compromises in a serious way everyone’s privacy. Considering all the problems, he is thinking of changing the apartment in the nearest future.

A grown up son Disposition and spaces The nucleus I am going to describe is composed by a group of two people living together and in particular they are an elderly woman, Iside, who is 80 and is now retired, and her adult son Massimo, who is 55, works as an electrician and is not married.

They live in Desio, a small city near Monza in Italy and they moved here from their hometown near Mantova, afer Iside’s two children were born.

Massimo and Iside spend little time together during the day though, as he works quite far all day long and they just meet early in the morning and in the evening.

Their house is at the ground floor of a big block of flats and it’s composed of their two bedrooms, a small bathroom and a quite big open space, which puts kitchen, dining room and living room together. These are just divided by a low cabinet in the middle.

The house is not well enlightened, as the main room overlooks another block of flats that lays right in the front. They think this is the biggest flow the apartment has, as it makes it less comfortable and prevents the sun from coming in.

They also own a small courtyard, which is nice in summer and creates a pleasant ambient to have in front of the house, but it can’t be fully lived because it’s too narrow to even put a table with some seats.

Routine and impressions On a typical day, they wake up early in the morning; Massimo goes to work and Iside usually stays home, houseworks and then sometimes goes out for a walk and meets her friends.

Iside is in her eighties and shows no special needs, as she likes to spend her free time watching television or relaxing and the big open space fits perfectly to her single situation.

Instead, Massimo says he would like to have more space to spend on his own and have more privacy, as the private area of the home, including his bedroom, is quite small and is now used only during nightime.

Due to this, he spends most of his free time outside and has very little time to relax. He says he would like to have a bigger room just for himself, maybe with a big desk to work with his computer when he’s at home. This situation is reflected in his room, which is quite messy, as he doesn’t have the space he really needs.

Nevertheless, they say they can handle the rest of the space they own quite well, which is wide and neat.

Afer visiting the house, I can say it is a nice ambient to live in, despite the expose, which is owed to the location of the block of flats. Tough, the disposition of rooms could be revised, in order to fit better everyone needs.

There is in fact an evident imbalance between the common and the private area: the dining area is far too big for two people and the bedrooms are too small to be lived properly.

How the nucleus is composed?

Anelia is doctor who lives in Bergamo in a small flat with her husband Ilian, their son Pavel and her mother. Anelia and Ilian work as doctors at a local hospital, while their son Pavel works as freelance graphic designer. The grandmother takes care for the family. After the death of Anelia’s father, her mother moved to Italy to live with her. Pavel has a girlfriend so they live together and sometimes he visits his family on weekends.

A day in the life of family Parvanovi During the working days the family meets rarely as usually Anelia leaves by 9. The family are passionate skiers so they go at least three times for two-weeks ski vacations. They also travel together around the world for holidays or return to Bulgaria. They love to visit different cities during free weekedns.

Relations between people The family spends a lot of time together and they are really close to each other. The grandmother is happy to be with her daughter and her family and they appreciate her care too. Also, Anelia feels more calm to have her mother in the flat because she believes that her mother is too old to live alone so far from her. Surprisingly the flat does not feel overcrowded as the family loves to spend time outdoors.

What are the areas of conflict ?

The family never used the living room, so her son sleeps there when he stays over and uses it to work during the day. The only problem is that the kitchen is too small for them to have family meals all together. So they usually bring a third chair or eat separately. Corso Vercelli, Milano This big apartment is composed by 5 rooms, a huge corridor, two bathrooms and the kitchen.

Each room is rented by someone for a minimum of one month. In this period the people living there are: - Elly, a friend of mine. She is 30 years old and she is from Bulgaria. She came in Italy to study in university, but once graduated she never wanted to go back to her country. Now she works as a promoter and hostess for events.

She like to dance and she is very strict aboud house issues such as throwing away garbage and making noise during night hours.

- Katy, she is 22 years old from Canada. She doing her erasmus year in Milan, she goes to a lot of parties and knows a lot of people. She is friendly and talks a lot.

- Caroline is 24 years old from France. She’s doing her master in web design.

- Till is 28 years old and comes from Germany. He works and is quite never at home, when he comes back, he never talk to anyone and stays always in his room.

- Irene and Giacomo are the couple, she’s 25 years old and he is 24. They both come from Firenze. She is an actress and a singer and goes to auditions.

He goes to university and when he’s at home is always in the kitchen. He is a polite person but not so friendly.

The main issues As there are six people living together for the first time and not knowing each other before, there are some cohabitation problems in the house.

1 - first of all, there is a lack of “social space”: in the house was not desing a living room. The owner of the flat just put a sofa and an armchair in the corner of the corridor. Nobody use that place as they prefer being comfortable in their room instead of an old and worn sofa.

2 - there are only two small bathrooms for six people and only one washing machine so they have to arrange shifts to wash their clothes.

And most of all, the entrances of the bathrooms face some bedrooms, so as someone wants to take a shower in the late evening, it bores the inhabitants near the bathrooms.

3 - the kitchen is the main issue. It’s not big enough to host 6 people at the same time and it has only one fire. It is always a mess as nobody wants to clean others’ stuff.

It is such a mess that you can’t even put a foot outside to see what is there.

8th floor Lecco The apartment consists of three bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, two bathrooms, long corridors and a balcony with a beautiful view of the lake. Two bedrooms are double with bunk beds. Every student has his own desk but most of the closets are in the common areas. Therefore the desk is the most personal space.

The living room is large, 30 square meters, is the heart of the apartment. Thanks to non-fixed furniture, it is possible to change the layout according to your needs.

The life of the students is very compatible with the plan of the apartment. The criticalities that a family would face are mitigated by the student status. The students are often away during the weekends, and during the day they are out of the house. Lunch and dinner are the most important moments of the flat daily routine and are very enjoyable thanks to the wide common spaces, there are often guests indeed.

The main critical aspect is the small kitchen. Only two people at time can cook. Therefore lunches are often consumed by two or three people at time. But sometimes it happens that a student cooks for everybody.

Another negative aspect is privacy in double rooms, especially for individual study. This activity is positively carried out in the nearby library and university During the year the guys organize parties. The living room, kitchen, corridor and balcony become clearly the most public spaces. The guests reach 60 people. The party ends at midnight, and then continues in the pubs of Lecco.

It was very interesting to notice how the apartment is for students from different generation. Home habits are passed on to new students and new flatmates contribute to creating new ones.

Are all strangers Vladyslav is 20 y.o. student, lives in Warsaw, Poland. He is originally from Ukraine, so he rents a room in the apartment. There are three more rooms with four people. All the other people are from Poland and they are all strangers, except brother and sister living in one room. There are no argues between all users, but they also almost do not communicate due to the daily schedule, age and personal reasons.

They all together share a hall, a small storage, a bathroom and a kitchen.

Everybody’s day is planned in the way that they almost do not intersect in the common areas: bathroom or a kitchen, except evening hours.

Passing days One of the typical days Vladyslav starts at 7:00 has his shower, breakfast and lives in an hour to the university . There are no problems in organization with others, since Michael usually leaves around 7:00, others are still sleeping.

Around 15:00 he is back home. Usually only Tadeush isWarsaw at home, but he is always in his room, no one on the kitchen, so Vladyslav can cook his lunch.

Then he rests or have a walk.

Later Mateush and Evelina are back and cook their dinner around 20:00, so Vladyslav cooks dinner after them. Around midnight Vladysav goes to bed.

Make it perfect Although there are no argues between users, there are still some issues, which need to be solved in this apartment: First of all the kitchen is too narrow for 2 or more people to be present at the same time. Vladyslav almost does not intersect with others, even if someone cooks too - they turn on what they need to cook and wait for it in their rooms.

Secondly, there is no dinning table and sitting places - you have to eat in your room, moreover there is no living room for guests or spending time all together. Single rooms are too small to accommodate guests. Living room could also be with common balcony, as only one private room has a balcon.

Thirdly place for drying the clothes could be a good improvement, since now it occupies too much space in the single room and creates a high humidity.

Fourth issue is that brother and sister living in one room would prefer single rooms as they already need more private space in their age.

Even there are quite a lot of problems, there are still some positive aspect in this apartment: Bathroom and kitchen are not occupied all the time. There are no people who stay in the bathroom for a long period, if they do not really need so.

Vlad goes to the bath wearing his sleepers, cause of hygiene. Sometimes people can ask if you need a toilet, before they occupy the bath.

Moreover, for one person small room is comfy, since it is newly furnished, warm and a small “hall” (in Vladyslav’s room) is a plus to put shoes, clothes, luggage or some other staff.

A roommate for a friend Irene and Eleonora this two girl are architecture students aged 22 and 21 who are transferred to live more close to the university.

They attend the same courses in architecture at the Politecnico di Milano Piacenza campus and they are known there two years a go Both being in search for a cheap place, so they made a required to the university office for a student house.

The house The house is basic a traditional flat in an old restored building in Piacenza.

They have just one double bedroom and one living space whit a separate kitchenette.

The university has furnished the house with a table for six in the dining room and a very large desk in the bedroom which actually is used as a storage! No one has ever studied at that desk ...

Surely the living space is where the most happens.

The quality of the live My two friends havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t a real daily routine, the number of roommates is not consolidated too, because they often have many guests.

Piacenza is a small town, and also the Polytechnic has few subscribers there, so across the university exudes a rather homely atmosphere, they are all friends, they all do the same things, so often they work together.

Most of the days there are from 2 to 5 people remain both at dinner almost sleep for days.

It fits! not everyone has a bed to sleep, it uses anything you can see 4 people sleep in a double room whit the two beds joined. And the sofa becomes a double bed for 3. Someone is sleeping on the chair, someone â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;else carries an inflatable mattress. there are those who donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sleep.

Anna’s flat some history pills Anna was born in 1921, and she lives in this flat since 1960, where she moved with her two no married sisters and their mum, who died soon after. In 2011, after the death of one sister, came a caregiver to help Anna and her sister Edvige, because they weren’t autonomous for everything in their life. Recently Edvige died too and Anna is alone now so it is important to have a caregiver who can stay with her during the day and also during the night in case of any difficulties. Anna is an active elder woman (she’s 96 years old!!) but her body is weak. Paraskiva, Anna’s caregiver, comes from Romania and she’s 58, she lives with Anna all of the week, except for some free time in the weekend; so in the weekend Ainura comes to the flat to help Anna. Ainura comes from Kirghikistan and she’s 38, and she takes the same cares that Paraskiva normally takes. the flat The flat was originally designed to house four people, so there are two bedrooms and it is not complicated to host someone in one of these. There are also two bathrooms, although one is small, it’s good to avoid sharing these personal spaces. Anna and Paraskiva share other common spaces like the kitchen, where they live a lot time of during the day and the living room where she and her sisters used to host people who came here to dine and chat.

While Piri was out shopping, I asked Anna to tell me, honesty, about this cohabitation, and she told me there aren’t problems, because Piri isn’t invasive and they talk serenely.

Also Piri told me she lives very well here, she has her bedroom where she can stay alone for some moments.

In this bedroom there is one Anna’s wardrobe, so sometimes also Anna uses this space. dayilyroutine pills In this flat the day isn’t so busy or adventurous: they wake up at 8 o’clock AM and they go to bed at 10:30/11PM, Anna and Piri doesn’t like to take a nap in the afternoon. Piri watches TV after dinner, Anna hates television. There aren’t special occasion that move the life in this house.

The only special occasion I remember in this house, since I was a child, is the 6th of January, when we used to come here in the afternoon for the “Befana” party, but now we don’t celebrate Epiphany here no more, so the most special occasions are the arrivals of some hosts. it is interesting that this house in the period between 15th of June and 15th of September is closed, uninhabited, because Anna and her caregivers go on the hills near Bologna.

This flat is a calm home where people, not blood-related, share spaces pleasantly.

A house for two Federica and Francesca are sisters and live in a small apartment in the core of Milan. Federica is 21, while Francesca is 24. Their have always lived in Milan but since their parents moved to Florence for job reasons, they started living in this apartment, which their parents used to rent to students, in order to continue their studies and work in the city.

Federica is attending a degree course in communication while Francesca has just graduated and is at the very beginning of her work career, currently doing an internship and working occasionally in the evening during the week. The little interior is basically composed by a larger central livingroom core, with all the other rooms overlooking it. daily routine On a normal day Federica wakes up first, has a quick shower and breakfast and rushes to the university, while Francesca has sometimes a spare morning so gets to work on her computer while laying on the sofa in the livingroom or on the big round dining table. She then leaves for the internship in the early afternoon and Federica comes home from the classes before dinner.

She chills in her own room after a shower and then reads a book or watches a movie on the bed, but just if she doesn’t invite some friends or her boyfriend over for dinner, which happens quite often.

High information availability Francesca gets back quite late and often finds it difficult to have just a quick shower or freely relax in the livingroom, because she necessarily would have to walk through the livingroom, where Federica is staying with her friends or boyfriend. The privacy issue gets twice worse when Federica’s boyfriend stays over for the night, mostly because of the strong proximity between spaces. opinions Federica prefers to study at home but finds it difficult to concentrate because the spaces are so compact that if Francesca is working on her computer with some music on, Federica would hear it everywhere in the house. This is caused also by the extreme thinness of the partitions. Francesca gets back quite late and often finds it difficult to have just a quick shower or freely relax in the livingroom, because she necessarily would have to walk through the livingroom, where Federica is staying with her friends or boyfriend. The big round dining table is Federica and Francesca’s favourite spot to work, eat or drink something because it’s next to the window which brings most of the light in the livingroom: from that spot they can talk to each other, they see every angle of the livingroom and chat to someone laying on the couch, or look out of the window to the busy street they live in.

The ceiling, higher than the standards, is another favourite of them: it makes the house look more spacious, and they love to place hanging lights or objects on the steel beam passing through the livingroom.

On the other hand, they complain the lack of a door in the kitchen, which causes all the food smell to spread in the house and get absorbed by the wooden, timeworn part of the ceiling.

The bathroom lacks a window and there’s very small direct light coming because of the strict proximity of the buildings across the street, but luckily the old-fashioned classic windows are quite high and allow a sufficient amount of diffused light into the apartment.

In the end, the main features of this interior can be resumed into a privacy issue, strongly related to habits and activities happening during the day.

Two sistersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; flat In my case study, the two people who live under the same roof are two sisters of 50 years, Nadia and Donatella.

Their hometown is Matino, in the province of Lecce, but for reasons of work they had to move to Bari, where they now live there for about ten years. They have a very close relationship between them and also with their family, namely their mom and their other four sisters, as they live far apart.

Neither of them have never been married and working for the same company, they decided to live together.

Despite working in the same place, their typical day is organized differently because they have two different roles within the same company, so their daily routine are different.

Nadia goes to work every day early, around 9 am, so she wakes up early and gets ready to go to the office. Donatella instead goes to work later than Nadia, around 11 am, but she still wakes up early and prepares along with Nadia.

While Nadia is working, Donatella goes twice a week in the gym, and in the remaining days she takes care of the house or runs her errands, and then goes to her job around 11 am.

Nadia starts to work early so she ends before Donatella, around 6-7 pm, and she goes to the gym just leaving the office. However often Nadia gets up earlier than usual to go running in the morning, and then she comes back home to have breakfast with Donatella and gets ready to go to. In any case in the evening around 9 pm they are both at home to have dinner together and watch television in the living room together.

They are two people with attitude a bit â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;different from each other, Nadia is in fact a great lover of sports, she works out a lot and she loves any kind of sport, she has also practiced a lot of different sports disciplines during her life. Donatella instead prefers to devote more to cooking or gardening.

Both do their utmost to keep the house always tidy and clean every day.

Many weekend, about two per month, return down to Matino, to visit their family and they stop there for a few days.

Elderly + Caregiver(s) Interstecting nucleus The aggregation that has been assigned me is elderly person/people plus caregiver(s). Looking for a refence, I realized that my closest contact is eventually my grandmother, who has been living with Tea (her caregiver), since my grandfather passed away three years ago. They are still living in the same apartment where my grandarents used to live together, in Cassano delle Murge, a twelve-thousands-inhabitants town in southern Italy.

Before moving there, Tea was living with her sons in Tbilisi (Georgia) in quite uncomfortable life-conditions. Now her job as caregiver allow her to help from Italy her family, sending them a part of money she earns, besides sharing a more comfortable flat with my grandmother.

Even though they are co-habitants, they represent two separate nucleus and surely not a typical familiar environment. However, they have a very similar daily routine and habits, as Tea is mainly there to assist my grandmother, apart from few hours she has only for herself. They usually spend most of the day at home, especially in the dining room where the sofa and television are. Tea’s job includes also cooking for both of them or doing houseworks and cleaning. There are not really hard conflicts in the use of spaces, as my grandmother has a quite defined daily schedule, so that Tea knows well whether she can access a space or not, especially for what concerns the bathroom.

The only exceptional day is thursday, when Tea has her free day and she prefers not to spend it at home, but to go to a close city to meet up her friends. In that case, my grandmother moves to my aunt’s house or someone stays with her at her place.

This relationship of dependence-independence is the most interesting characteristic of this category; even though these two people represent two different nucleus as they have not any blood relationship nor a sentimental link, they actually carry on a very similar lifestyles as it is strictly linked to my grandmother’s necessities. The result is that most times my grandmother’s needs overlap Tea’s ones, as well as Tea’s assistance affects my grandmother’s privacy rating a lot, especially concerning activities linked to her personal hygiene (shower or getting dressed) .

The result is a partial intersection of the two nucleus as I graphically represented on the right part.

Inhabitants

Felix is 23 years old and he is a friend of mine from university. He was born and raised in Milan and nowadays he is studying Architecture at Politecnico di Milano. He grew up in the same house where he is actually living but with a quite significant change from 2015. In fact his mother left two years ago to work in London. After this swing, Felix and Ada (Felix’s sister) decided to rent a room of their home to a student. Ada is 20 years old and she’s studying painting at Accademia di Brera.

The house has two floors, a first floor where is the living/dining room, the kitchen, a bathroom and their mother’s old room / now felix’s room. At the second floor there are other two rooms, one is Ada’s room and the other is Felix’s old room. They choose to rent Felix’s room because it has an en suite bathroom and so it was easier to rent.

Gaetano, 22 years old, is now renting felix’s old room and he’s studying Fashion Design at Politecnico di Milano. Felix told me that Gaetano doesn’t spend a lot of time at home, especially at dinner time he’s quite always out so they don’t meet frequently except when they came home from university.

How the apartment is lived When I asked him how the space is lived, he said that a lot changed after their mother left. Before they passed a lot of time in the living room and they had dinner together. Nowadays he passes most of his time in his room alone and the same does Ada or Gaetano. He uses the living room only when he has to study or do a model because in his room there isn’t a table. When I asked him why he didn’t put a table in his new room, he said that he doesn’t fell the room like his because in his mind their mother will came back sooner or later. So even if he’s staying in this room since two years he still relate the room to his mother so he didn’t change quite anything. Furthermore he thinks there is not enough space because of a big closet full of documents and tools that he can’t move from the room. Even if he doesn’t feel his room properly his, no doubts it is his favorite place in the house because it is very cozy and intimate. Another aspect he loves about his new room is that he wakes up with natural light. Although the only complain he has it is about light. In fact the house is oriented at East and it has only one view so they have natural light only during the morning. For this reason he doesn’t study at home because after 1 pm the living/dining room become quite dark.

Daily based habits Felix wakes up at different times depending if he has university or not. If he has university he wakes up approximately 20 minutes before the starting of the lesson so he doesn’t have time to do breakfast but only to go in the bathroom for almost 10 minutes and than he goes out. After he left, he doesn’t come back home until 6/6.30 pm. Even if the house is quite near to university, at lunch he prefers to eat with his friends. When he comes back home some times he mets Gaetano in the living room working on his computer.

This is the only interval when he spends time with him or with his sister. At dinner, around 8/8.30 pm, they never eat together. Felix cooks for himself and he eats in his bed watching a movie or reading. After that, he goes to sleep.

During the weekends he spends much of his time in his room or in the dining room, he never stays on the couch. Sometimes their mother comes to visit them but she stays at her mate’s apartment because there is no space for her anymore. When she arrives many times she gets very mad because the house is always a mess.

During the week they are most of the time at university so the house is always empty during the day hours.

This is the most convivial moment of the day for Felix, Ada and Gaetano. During this hours they stay in the living room and even if they do different activities, they share the same space. The kitchen is very small so they can’t cook together but this space is not separated from the living room so they can talk from one part to another. Gaetano is the only one who uses the couch in the living room.

They have a little fireplace but they told me they don’t use it beause the wood planks are too expensive.

The Apartment and its Dwellers Three Roomates in their twenties live together; one female Stephanie and two males Marc and George.

The apartment has two Bedrooms with each their walk in closet and bathroom, a glass enclosed balcony that is used as a bedroom, a common living room, and a common kitchen.

Stephanie lives in the balcony which is just enough to fit a queen size bed and a dresser; it is suitable to be used as a living space as it is temperature controlled and equiped with all necessary outlets and cables for tv, phone, and internet.

Two Students Martina She lived with her family in Foggia until she finished school. Then she moved to Bari to study Philosophy and after she graduated she was able to transfer to Milan to study classical dance in the same academy of Camilla, where they met.

Camilla When she was 9 years old, she moved to Milan with her mother to pursuit her dream of becoming a classical dancer. Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been taking lessons since she is a little kid and now that she finished school, she can dedicate to dance full-time.

Camilla, though, has a boyfriend and they would appreciate more privacy.

When he comes home they both sleep in the guest room.

The appartment In a typical day, the girls wake up at the same time and Camilla uses the bathroom while Martina has breakfast. Then, they switch roles and Martina uses the bathroom while Camilla is having breakfast.

They spend the whole day outside in dance lessons, have lunch outside, and come back home in the afternoon. Since they both have the same schedule, they share all the areas of the home, all the time. For sleeping they open and close the sofa-bed in the living room but they say is not a problem. The girls enjoy each other company and they like sleeping together. They say they have to make the bed anyways in the morning and to close it takes only 2 more minutes.

As they study dance, when they come back home they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need to study, unlike the common student type, so they just relax and hang out.

On their spare time they enjoy meeting friends, usually in a bar close to the apartment, reading, watching tv, talking in the phone or just hanging out together.

The Mecenate Girlz The apartments are part of a complex of residences characterized by four buildings.

Elena and her room mates lives in an apartment on 5th floor. Elena works as an assistant photographer for a studio based in Milan.

She lives in a apartment with another worker of 25 years(Sara) old and 2 student both 21 years old.

The apartment is characterized by two bedrooms, one bathroom and inhabitable kitchen. Both bedrooms have two single beds for a total of 4 beds. Based on the interviews of Elena, the living room is the most inhabit enviroment where they study or just relax, except for the 25 years old worker that mostly spends her time in her room. The two 21 years old students sleep in the second room because the first was already occupied by Elena and Sara.

Elena confirmed that according the two students their room is actually too small for two persons. They would have liked that the room was a bit â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;bigger. Also the one bathroom is not enough for four women.

Assistant Photographer

Description of each member Elena works as an assistant photographer in a photography studio in Milan.

She works every day from 9 am to 5 pm. She is the second year working in the studio. Elena likes to live in company for this, she decided to live with roommates, but this has a negative impact on her, she has less room to work at home. Being a photographer needs a large space where so much light can come in. In fact, in the apartment she lives after working time, she lives most in the living room in the main desk where all the various equipment (computers, lamps, lights, monitors, documents ...) are located.

Obviously the living room is not only lived by her but also by her roommates who do other activities that sometimes disturb Elenaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work.

Sara, 25, is the eldest of the four members. Sara works in a magazine editorial and is the person who comes back later than everyone else.

At home the place that uses more, excluded service spaces like the bathroom or the kitchen, is the first bedroom shared with Elena.

In fact, in the days here he has a lot of work, she stay mostly in the room for working. In the room are all the various equipment that she need, as Elena is in the living room. According to the interviews between the two, there is no conflict because each has its own space of use. She by now prefer to live alone because she has a consolidated daily program but anyway she has no conflict with his roommates.

Anna is 21 years old and is in the first year of university as Deborah.

In fact, the two students are the last to be in this apartment when they moved to the university. Both have chosen this home both for the cost and for the people (they already knew Elena). In fact, from the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s point of view, they never had problems. The only downside to them was the size of the second bedroom. In fact the room is actually a single room. The owner has replaced the single bed with a bunk bed. Both Anna and Deborah are in college to study, but on the days they want to stay at home they are forced to use the main living room. In any case, the two students at home carry out almost just leisure activities (internet, music, movies etc).

Chiara cames from Pisciotta, near Napoli, she studies architecture and she lives in Milan since three years with five roommates.

Luca is 24 years old cames from Tuscany and he is an engeneering student, Nicola is 27 years old, cames from Sardinia and he graduated in philosophy and he works for a company that rents rooms for students. Cristoforo, also said Tatò, cames from Sicily and is 20: he studies engeneering. At least, Gianmarco is 22 years old, cames from Lazio and he studies mathematics.

They live togheter in viale Romagna that is a strategically area because is near Loreto and near Piola. This point is very important for the roommates because, Nicola excluded, all of them study at Politecnico.

Three of them are rented the flat for long period, Chiara and Nicola rented the room since two years and they are going to stay for two years more, Cristoforo arrived last year and he is going to stay here for four years more.

The other two, Luca and Gianmarco, rented the room for a shorted periods, (from six months to a year).

Daily routine.

The flat is not lived during the day because everyone are busy in their work and study activities. All come back at 6:30 pm (more or less), and there is a time frame of two hours when some people relaxing in front of the TV, others go to the gym or stay in their room. They have dinner, around 8:30 pm, possibly together.

Nicola has a bit different daily routine because he comes back from 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm and he has lunch at home. Nicola, in fact, as a worker, has saturdays and sundays free and he spends them at home.

Chiara and the other 3 students roommates spend the weekend generally at the university.

Positive and negative point.

Chiara loves her flat and she is in a very good relationship with her roommates. When I asked her what would change in her flat she told me that the bathrooms are uncomfortable because long and narrow and the living room is too small for five people. About her bedroom she likes to have a big bed because her boyfriend comes to visit her sametime.

Most of the space of the apartment is wasted on the corridor that divides the rooms. The bearing wall originally separated two different apartments. (diagram A)

Four people, two different life styles, one Flat Daily routine and conflicts The inhabitants of this flat are enough friends even if they barely know each other so the cohabitation is pleasant and quiet.

Despite the frienship, live together is always somewhat complicated because each human has a different routine and in this case it is very apparent.

Every day Clelia and Pierandrea wake up early in the morning because at 9 a.m they have to be at work or university. In the meanwhile Luca and Stefano remain in bed, although they should go to their courses too.

So, in the morning, Pierandrea and Clelia have to use the bathroom and the kitchen at the same time; for the kitchen it isn’t a problem because they like to have coffee together and talk, but they would prefer two bathrooms, that way they won’t have to rush.

Later, when Luca wakes up to go to his work shift, the flat is very quiet and he can get ready without any problem. Maybe, when Stefano decides to go to university they have to divide the bathroom too.

During the day only Luca and Stefano spend time at home and they have lunch together and in the afternoon, if Luca is at work, Stefano tidies up the flat and plays videogames.

Some other conflicts appear in the evening when everyone wants to prepare and have dinner but the kitchen is too small to cook all together and also to eat at the same time, so they have to take turns to cook.

The kitchen is one of the main problems because all the flatmates like to invite friends and have dinner all together.

An other problem is the livingroom that is too big and under-used because no one watch the TV on the sofa; they use this space to have dinner with friends and drain clothing.

An other useless space is the entrance that is bigger then all the others rooms.

Ciro Marco and Giulia, co-habitation of a brother and sister Ciro Marco Ciro Marco was born in Naples and he is 22 years old. He is studying architecture in Milan and for this reason he moved from his hometown.

Until three years ago he lived with his parents and his sister Giulia, so when he moved to Milan was traumatic. He started living a new life alone, on his own, in a flat belonging to his family. One month ago, his sister decided to move to Milan for business purpose and the co-inhabitance started.

Giulia Giulia was born in Milan and she is 29 years old. She moved to Naples when she was 3 years old. She studied in Naples at the faculty of law and 4 years ago she graduated. She started working in Naples but she always had the desire to move to Milan for working. Two months ago, she found a job in a law firm in Milan, and she moved in the one that was her original house, living with his brother Ciro Marco.

Flat His house is a four-room apartment, located in the fourth floor of a building in a residential complex. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s composed by a living room, a kitchen, a small storeroom, two master bedrooms and a bathroom.

The flat belongs to his family, that before moving to Naples, was living in Milan. The flat was rented for many year and for this reason, when Ciro moved in, it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t well furnished. As time went on, he personalised his flat with new furniture, books, posters and different design objects; all items that satisfy his necessities, his habits and let himself feeling at home.

At the beginning he was living alone, and he had all the spaces for himself, while now he is obliged to share them with his sister. The flat could be divided in two parts, one more private, the bedrooms, and one more public, the living room and the kitchen. These last two are the areas where they spend most of their time studying, reading, using the computer, watching television and sometime having dinner. The bedrooms are used only for sleeping.

Habits Their daily routine starts at 6 am, when they wake up and after they both leave the flat to go practicing their different activities.

One goes to university and the other goes at work, and they return at home in the evening around the same time at 8pm. They managed to organize themselves in preparing dinner and cleaning after in order not to create conflicts.

During the weekends, they spend more time together, not only the evenings as in the week days. They wake up later and they do together different activities to keep the house cleaned or they visit exhibitions and places around Milan.

They live two separate but not independent lives, they live in the same brother and sister relationship as they were living before leaving their hometown.

Marta’s flat Marta is 22 years old and studies architecture in Milan, but she is from Treviso, near Venice, so here she shares a flat with two friends: Giulia and Angelo.

The apartment in which they are staying is owned by Giulia’s aunt, who doesn’t use it anymore.

Giulia is Marta’s age and studies fashion design at the Politecnico di Milano, she comes from Emilia Romagna. She has a boyfriend in town so she usually spend the weekends with him or some days of the week.

Angelo also has the same age as Marta and studies with Giulia; he comes from Sicily and he also has a boyfriend so he doesn’t use the house much.

The apartment is composed by two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen and a bathroom, each of these spaces are connected through a corridor.

Marta shares his room with Giulia, while Angelo has his own.

Daily Routine Marta wakes up a little bit later compared to her flat-mates who need to share the only bathroom. Then everyone have breakfast before going to university.

During the day usually the house is almost everyday empty because they all study all day long.

Giulia and Angelo arrive at home sooner than Marta, in the late afternoon they study or exercise at home, Angelo sometimes goes to the gym before dinner.

In the evening they try to eat all together, even if each one cooks for himself.

The kitchen is small, so they are not comfortable cooking all toghether.

Usually they spend the rest of the evening in the living room, watching TV or studying before going to bed.

The spaces Marta shares the room with Giulia, it’s a big space but of course there are some privacy problems, even if they have very similar habits and they get along very well. The main problem is that there is only one desk to study and the wardrobe is not big enough for them. Both of them dream of a single bedroom.

Angelo has a private room with a double bed and a desk, so he has a lot of space for himself.

The living room is a neutral space that is used to study and to eat or watch television, it’s very useful also in terms of privacy, because it becomes a third room if someone needs a moment just for himself.

The bathroom is shared and this fact creates some conflicts during the morning and in the evening, the main problem is that there is only one closet for the three of them who would like to have more space for their personal belongings.

In the weekend Marta stays usually alone, because Giulia visits her parents in his city of birth or stays with her boyfriend and Angelo too.

Every shared part of the house, like the bathroom or the kitchen, is organized individually, each one of them has his own place to set their dishes, food, etc. They organize also the cleaning of the house, each week one of them has a different task.

LUCA’S HOUSE Luca is a student and one of my closest friends of university. He lives with his younger sister and other 3 people in a flat in Lambra­te, near the university. They are all attending architecture at Poli­tecnico di Milano. Giulia (Luca’s sister) and Martina are 20 years old; Nicolò has the same age of Luca and Filippo is the older person in the house. The flat is organized in one long corridor, 2 bathrooms, one kitchen and 3 bedrooms: Luca is sharing one of them with his sister, Filippo and Nicolò have another room together and Martina sleeps in the last one.

Routine Most of the day nobody is at home. Except special occasions they don’t spend so much time together, so the house can be conside­red like a sort of dormitory. During the day they have different routi­nes, except Luca and Nicolò beacause they are attending the same year of university.

- 7:30 : The first student awaken is Giulia, considered the most punctual person in the house, but a little bit anxious.

- 8:00 : Luca, Martina and Filippo wake up and have breakfast.

- 10:00 : Nicolò is the last one that wakes up. He’s used to be late at lessons.

- 13 :00 : They never have luch at home. The house is empty and nobody is there.

-18:00/22:00 : The students come back home and have dinner, except Filippo because he usually works at Politecnico till late.

Weekend Martina and Giulia always come back to their hometown in the weekend.

The rest of the group usually get out with friends or orga­nize small parties in the house.

Complains and feedback The lack of a living room is the most criticized aspect of the ho use by each component. They also complain about the waste of space, especially in the entrance. Anotheer issue wich causes arguments is the dinner beacuse Martina and Giulia have different alimentar rou­tines, but they decided all together to do common purchases in order to save money and time. After all the cohabitation is good, despite there are 5 people under the same roof.

Velinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s apartment Velin rents a single room in apartment, and lives with three other people.

Adam (25) is student of medicine, Frederik (22) is student of architecture, while Valentina (23) is worker.

Velin is architecture student so his typical day consists of spending a lot of time at university, mostly from early morning untill late afternoon, and after that he goes to gym, therefore he arrives home at time for dinner. His flatmates confirmed that they have similar schedule like Velin, therefore they too spend a lot of time outside the house. For Velin only exceptions are weekends, which he uses to travel around Italy, since he is Erasmus student.

Him and his flatmates find it very enjoyable to live with each other, because they became good friends, and all of them find it pleasent to have people in apartment that you can always talk too and hang out with, and since they all have a single room privacy is not a problem to be considered.

All of them said that they were very lucky with each other, since they are all very clean people, so how stays always clean.

They also pionted out that so far hey did not have any problems with each other, and that they nd this way of leaving very good while you are student.

A room of one’s own Silvana is a Milanese architect, about 67 years old. She was born in Bergamo, where she grew up and attended schools. She moved to Milan when she started studying in Politecnico, having a small flat on her own in Sempione area. She loved the neighbourhood, hanging around the park and having every service she needed around her. Silvana moved to the United States for a while, to finish her studies in exhibition curator. Back to Milan, she moved in with her companion, but since 2005 she is living by herself and working in the same area she used to love during university years. She opened up her house to women in her same situation.

Ilaria was born in Treviso, studied in the US and started working for an italian marketing company. She lives in one of Silvana’s rooms since 2015.

Hoshiko is Japanese woman who also works in Milan and needs a room just for the night. She doesn’t really like talking about herself.

The house layout and its functions.

The apartment is organised along a key plan, in which the corridor connects the big living room with the kitchen and the night area. The three main bedrooms have a South-East exposition; a small one on the corner close to the kitchen is provided for guests. The broad shared spaces serves several functions, as a dining table, big couch and chairs, an “audio-corner”, to listen to the radio or to the record player and a small area with a couch and a tv.

Most of the day, the three women are absent from home. Ilaria, sometimes, comes back for lunch break because she works closeby, but both during the morning and the afternoon the house remains empty.

Activities start when Silvana comes home at 7 PM and cooks dinner, most of the times for herself only, sometimes also for Ilaria. Hoshiko is rarely included, as she’s never regular about the time she comes back. When she’s on time, the three eat and enjoy the living room all together.

The evening time is really quiet during the week: Silvana sometimes plays the piano or reads, Ilaria watches TV and Hoshiko continues working in her bedroom or watches TV series on her laptop. The wide space lets all of them deal with their own entertainments undisturbed.

The unique moment of conflict is during the morning, when Hoshiko and Silvana have the same bathroom in use around the same times, but the first who wakes up is the first one to use it.

During the weekends the common activities are taking place. The general cleaning is usually on Saturday morning, when the three organise and clean the different rooms with the sound of music from the record player.

Sometimes, if one organises a dinner with friends, the others are invited to join and the table is adapted to host up to twenty people.

Welcome to Dublin When I travel I often use services such as AirBnb and Couchsurfing. So it sometimes happens that, alone or with friends, I live for some days with strangers in their house. I am considered as a guest and I have free access to the house with a copy of the key, and, like in a hotel, they usually give me clean sheets and towels and also breakfast. While with Couchsurfing you are not required to pay, and it is an occasion for the hosts to meet new people and to guide them, with AirBnb you pay like you are renting an apartment, and you sometimes share the flat with the owners or with other guests.

Felipe, a 31 years old computer technician, lives in Dublin and he rents part of his house, using Airbnb, to other people, espacially travellers. It is a two stories house: in the ground floor there is the living room with the kitchen and another room used as a studio or bedroom for his friends; in the first floor the bathroom, his bedroom and the guestroom. The house is confortable and always clean, since Felipe takes care of it every day. There is also a puppy that arrived not long time ago. The house is in a strategic position, since it is 15 minutes walking by the city center. All the guests have free access to the house, but not into Felipe’s room and the studio. So they can use the kitchen and of course the bathroom and the big bedroom. The guestroom has a big bed confortable for two people and an upper bed, so three people in total can be hosted. Felipe started using Airbnb 2 years ago.

Talking to Felipe, we can understand how he lives in the house and how it is to live everyday with different and foreign people. He says that pratically he is never alone, since he is always full of requests and the calendar is usually full of bookings. He got use to live with foreigners and he really like to know and help new people from different places. This takes time, since he has to clean the house and prepare the beds every day, but he says that it has never been a problem and he wants his guests to find always a welcoming environment. Describing a typical day in the house, he tells that guests are usually self-sufficient, so they don’t need him to be there when they have to leave, that is usually in the morning, so he is free to go out. People usually stay there for one day, sometimes two but relly rarely longer, and, since they are usually travellers, they don’t stay in the house during the entire day, but mainly in the night. So the house in the afternoon is usually free, and in the evening, the time when usually new guests arrive, he can meet the travellers and talk with them, giving them all the informations. Even if it’s possible for the guests to use the kitchen, they usually prefer to eat in the city, so Felipe doesn’t need to clean it that much. In the night, the guests usually comes back quite late, but they are always respectful and they have never caused trubles or excessive noise. Talking about exceptional days, he says that these, when it happens, are when there are no guests, and he can enjoy the quiet in his living room.

I had the pleasure to stay in Felipe’s house as a guest, and interesting to match the two different points of view: the host and the guest. Situations suche as Airbnb users are never easy since you have to share your personal space with people you know and you can’t even know if you can trust, but Felipe really enjoy to do this and it doesn’t cause stress to him. The house is a normal house, not designed of course for this kind of use, but it works very well.

The rooms are separated and you can have full privacy there. The shared space are the kitchen and the bathroom, and these can maybe be the points of conflict. Sharing the bathroom between foreign people can be weird and sometimes can create unpleasant situations since it is a very private space that, in this situation, people who don’t really know each other have to share.

Gemma’s Life She’s my friend’s grandmother, 75 years old.

Gemma was born in Trento, where she spent the early life, until she got married with Antonio at the age of twenty and moved to Bassano del Grappa. At 23, she had a daughter, Mariagrazia (mum of my friend). Things changed when Antonio years later (Mariagrazia was an adolescent) died for a cancer. Gemma had always helped her husband in his trucker activities, but from that moment on, took over the business and became a truck driver, probably the only women in the 70s in the whole country. Meanwhile, her daughter left school to help her and take care of the grandmother, Rosa, since Gemma was often driving between Porto Marghera, Milano, Crema, Trento, Portogruaro, Udine... . In the 90’s Gemma bought a house next to the beach, at Lido delle Nazioni, a quiet, small city. From that year on she moved in that house for almost all the year but the winter. During that period the city is empty, there’s no things to do or places to go or stay in, so she stays at her daugther’s house, with Micol (my friend) and Debora, her grandchildren. A great part of her life is her dog, Lulu. She has a real bed for herself.

Daily routine Gemma wakes up at 8:00. After breakfast, she goes out for a walk with Lulù: usually starting from her house, walking around the city center, arriving at the park to let Lulù play with other dogs.

She brings home the Lulu and goes to the beach to do the “awakening” (gymnastics at the beach) and water aerobics organized by the Staff of the place, where every year takes a beach umbrella for the entire summer season. After a short walk along the beach, she rests under the umbrella until lunchtime.

Back at home, Gemma prepears lunch, and in the early afternoon rests for an hour. During the afternoon she prefears not go to the beach. Usually does her stuff, shopping, going to see some friends, walk with Lulu. In the evening, after eating, goes to her friend Concetta Kiosk of traditional diches with Lulu to keep her company; then, when it closes, they have a walk together. At 22:30 she’s already sleeping.

My grandmother’s house

My grandmother (my mother’s mother) lives alone, not far away from the house where I live with my family in Giussano, in a house with a vegetable garden. The house has two floors, but at the ground floor here is only a big room where Angela’s husband used to work a lot of years ago, he was a carpenter. Every day my relatives come visit her in the morning and in the evening so she is never alone at home. In particular her son Roberto has lunch with her 3 times a week.

Usually I stay with my grandmother when I want to study in a quite place, we stay in the kitchen or in the hallway where she likes to stay when she wants to sew because is well illuminated by the window that opens on the balcony. She has a room (that was her children’s room) where she keep the sewing machine, fabrics and the clothes she made or sew up.

Me: Granny do you like your house or there are some spaces you would like to change?

Gm: I like the house but it’s old and there are a lot of air inflitrations.

My favourite spaces are the kitchen and the hallway because they SEZ AA' are well illuminated but I don’t like the sewing room because it’s too dark and I can’t see when I sew.

Me: During the year there are places you use in a different way?

Gm: Yes, in summer I can’t stay in the hallway to sew because it’s too hot and I have to close the blinds, instead in winter the sewing room is very cold and dark.

A Me: Do you have any kind of complain about the house? There is something you would have done in a different way?

Gm: Sure, a bigger bathroom because now it’s hard for me to move SEZ AA' in it. It’s also hard for me to do all the stairs every time to go to the cellar and I would like a bigger balcony.

Analyzing the nucleus_An Atlas of Householders Name: Martina Age and activity: 21 years old, student.

Place: Milan, Italy.

With whom and how he/she lives: Martina is in Milan to do an internship included in her study plan. She normally lives most of the year in Switzerland, where she attends university. She’s now living alone in a big apartment, with two double bedrooms, two bathrooms and a large living room, that her parents rented in order to host Martina’s grandparents when they are in Milan for medical check-ups.

For this reason she’s in Milan for this semester. She rented an house not so far from her workplace from a temporary housing agency. Her parents decided to rent a bigger house to host Martina’s grandparents. They often come in Milan for medical checkups in fact. However, in the other moments, Martina pratically lives alone.

She wakes up early in the morning to have breakfast in the kitchen or, when she’s late because she hasn’t heard her alarm and she has overslept, she just have a coffee bringing the hot cup from kitchen to bedroom and, sometimes, from bedroom to bathroom.Then she goes to work and comes home around 6:00 p.m. In those hours nobody is at home so, before going out, she closes windows, courtains and shades because this makes her feel safer. After work she usually has a shower and then she has dinner. Then she spends the rest of the night watching TV from her big bed until she falls asleep. She pratically needs just three rooms. Or, in other words, just three rooms are really lived. During the weekends she spends more time at home, hosting me or other friends from Swizerland. These days, together with ones during which her grandparents are in Milan, are the exceptional days: not only half house is lived, all bedrooms are full and the living room is the set of house parties or dinner with grandparents (Martina’s grandfather is really good with cooking).

Some feedbacks After a short “interview”, these are Martina’s comments about her current habitat: -The house is half warm-half cold almost always.

-Martina pratically live just some spaces of the whole house.

-The house is a bit dark because it’s in a narrow street.

-Martina feels neighbors across the street too close.

-Sometimes Martina feels a little lonely in a too big house.

-Often there’s a bit of chaos on the street and a bit of noise.

-Often some rooms are illuminated, some are dark.

-Often the windows on the courtyard are closed.

-Sometimes Martina hears footsteps upstairs and, when lights are turned off, this frightens her a bit.

The house diary Francesco is my brother. He is 30 and is video maker in corporate communication of Siemens Italy. A year ago he decided to live alone in an apartment. He moved in Milan because it was more convenient to go to work, actually the house is near about 10 minutes from his job. The first time he saw the apartment it was terrible but he was impressed by its spaces.

Francesco’s home It is a three-room apartment of about 80 square meters at the raised ground floor. Entering in the house you can find the living room and a little kitchen on the right, but going straight you can find the bathroom, the bedroom with a walk-in-closet and a big room on the left that my brother uses as his own studio or laundry.

Francesco’s typical day His day is very simple. He wakes up, has breakfast, a shower, and goes to work. When he comes back home he has dinner, watches some tv or plays PlayStation and finally I goes to bed.

Francesco’s special occasions His special day can change a lot. If he wants to relax, he often watches tv or plays PlayStation. But he also invites some friends to drink some beers, watch a film and talk.He sings in a band and sometimes they are around Italy to play. Other times he uses the studio for making videos for Siemens but also for music bands as a hobby, for his band or his friends’ bands, so he has created a little location for video postproduction. In the same room he also started to paint.

The pros The pros of the house are a lot. Among them, one of the more important is the nearness to his job. The spaces division is another positive aspect of the house. The living space, the night space and the studio are well separated from each other.The entire building is well taken, there’s a little garden outside there with some benches. The area is very silent, even though the house is near a busy street like Fulvio Testi. It’s also in a very convenient area, near metro and tram stops and highways very convenient.

The cons The cons are a few. Francesco is living there not for a long time, so he noticed a few negative aspects as the noise of neighborhood but he knows that living in condominium it’s normal.Maybe a con of the house aspects can be the bathroom a little bit narrow, some more meters could be better, or the kitchen a little bit small, but for a single person it could be essential.Another con could be that the house in on the ground floor, so Francesco hasn’t got a balcony or a terrace, but for the rest he is happy of his choice.

ONE-PARENT FAMILY

An adult daughter living alone with her mother involves completely different dynamics compare to an usual family.

Despite the age of Daniela (the daugher), their lifes are really diffe-rent.

Both work (or study) far from their home and that involves a desul-tory use of the house, limited at the morning and night hours. Also when both the member of the family are in the house, the space lived by each person are not the same: Laura mainly uses the living room after work as a relax area while Daniela stays in her bedroom. Laura also uses extra areas, placed outside the flat and accesible from the terrace, for her main hobby: paintng.

This room has become, during the years, her laboratory. Often Daniela tried to use that space for her needs but he never succeed in that attempt.

The only room that can be considered a real common space is the kitchen-dining room, where both usually have breakfast and dinner together.

The plan composition of the attic is very unusual: there is a complete missing of orizontal lighting in the bedroom area, caused by the fact of being a mansard. The zenithal illumination has become an important feature of the complessive composition of the flat: most of the internal walls don’t reach the roof, unifying the complessive spatiality of the flat.

PLAYERS’ DESCRIPTION: L: Her house is the place where her artistic side find her inspiration and where Laura finds her inner peace.

Before that, her home is where she lives with her best creatin: Daniela, her daughter. She’s not an usual daughter; the fact that they live alone created a special relation between them.

During the day she works in a local bank near her house and this work gave her the opportunity to spend a lot of time together with Daniela, during the childhood of her. Since Daniela started to study in Milan, in the 2014, this time together has been drastically cut.

This fact made Laura fells lonely most of the time while she was alone at home. Obviusly, she didn’t try to change that, because the growth of her daughter has been put at the first place in the priorities.

The human contact between Laura and Daniela results difficult also for the excessive surface of the flat.

The distance home-university involves a lost of time for travelling (more than one hour for trip).

D: Just like every person of her age, Daniela doesn’t spent much time with her relatives and she needs a lot of private space inside the house where she lives.

In spite of that, she has a very friendly relation with her only parent: her mother Laura. The fact that they lived alone made this relation very special and unusual. The university needs of time has changed a little this relation in the last three years: Daniela spends most of her time off in her boyfriend’s house, in Milan, and she come home almost just for sleeping. For example, she projected to create a little “cinema room” inside one of the unused room of her home, but that intention has been stopped by this lack of time inside it.

INDIVIDUAL COMMENTS:

L: “I’d like to spend more time together with my daugther. Be-cause of our occupations, we cannot share almost anything.

I think that the strong division of the rooms of the house doen’t help to en-courage the comunication between us. I very like this house but I’m not sure this is the right place to live alone with a daugther”.

D: “I don’t spent much time inside my flat but I really appre-ciate that moments. The ”secret room” inside my wardrobe has been a magical place during my childhood and that’s also special right now! There are not so many other rooms where I can have an appropriate privacy level but my bedroom is enough for me. Overall I can be satisfied of my flat but I also think that, if I spend more time inside it, I could radically change my opin-ion of it.”

A young Couple My friend Francesca, 22 years old, is currently living with her boyfriend Erik and a cat called Gin. They are a young couple. He is a 23 year old student.

Francesca works now in a in a clothing store in Monza.

So every morining she takes the bus to go working untill evening.

Her dream is to work in this sector, maybe become the owner of a big clothing store. To help the mother from Thursday until Sunday evening she isn’t at home in Milano (MI) but she stays at her mothers’ house in Verderio Inferiore (LC). When she’s at home during the morning she cleans the house and then after lunch she goes with her frinds to have a coffee.

Usally from 6 pm to 7 pm she goes running alone or with her boyfriend.

Erik studies Medicine at the University Vita Salute - San Raffele that is just 5 minutes away from the apartament. So he leaves the house very early in the morning from Monday till Thursday to attend the courses.

He returns home in the evening and in this moment of the day he spends time with his friends playing at the computer in the study room or just hanging around with them. This room of the house is very important because Erik spends a lot of time with his frinds and when Francesca is tired, they can stay inside in order to not disturb her.

Usally they eat together at home for dinner and they like very much eating at home togheter with their friends. So sometimes they organize dinners during the week.

The house The house in which they live is an apartment perfect for a couple.

The access is direct in the livingroom with a divan, the tv, a chest of drawers, the dining table, a big scratching post for their cat Gin and some paintings on the wall. Mostly of the time this big livingroom is not used.

The kitchen is quite small and not so well illuminated but there is all the necessary and it’s separated from the living room by two sliding doors.

The apartment has a big terrace with a dining table also outside.

To separate the private spaces from the collective once there is a small access. Here we have the bedroom with also a walk in closet that is used only

by Francesca. In the bathroom we have everything needed and a washing machine. There is also another room with a big desk, a computer and wardrobes that is used by Erik to put his clothes and to sudy or play the computer.

Apartment of living alone grandma Stasia is 83 years old pensioner. She has been living in Wrocław since 35 years. She is a widow and since her husband’s death, she has been living alone in her apartment. Her flat is locatecd in the city center, about 15 min by walk from market square. The apartment is consisted of long hall, which is main communication in the flat, guests’ room, which used to be bedroom of her husband, kitchen, small bathroom and living room connected with Stasia’s bedroom. All surface of apartment is about 80 squaremeters. Also there is balcony accesibe from living room, where she keeps all her plants and flowers.

Stasia lives alone, however she has five grandchildren. It happens often that one of them is staying with her in the apartment because she lives in the city center. In that case, they use usually extra room, that used to be the room of grandpa.

They help her also with homework and although grandma is still physically fit, it shoud be concidered that in the future one of her grandchildren will be asked to live with her.

When I spoke with her last time, I asked her few basic questions about her apartment and her daily life.

1_What do You like the most in your apartment?

The bathroom, because it is cosy and comfortable. And also there is shower.

2_What time do You start and end up your day?

Usually, I wake up at 8-9 am and goes to sleep at 11-12 pm.

3_What do You think about living alone?

The biggest advatages of living alone, for sure is independence. You can also furnish in your own style, not asking anyone for permision. :)On the other hand there is also loneliness. In these days that nobody is visiting me, I feel very lonely.

Izabela lives in Tarnow, city near Krakow Poland in a home with her son. Home is located in a city center in a quiet alley. House has 4 floors including basement andattick. Izabela is 47 years old and is a doctor of medicine and her son is 16 and he is a student in high school. Her daughter, who is now an adult and moved to another city visits sometimes and then stays in her old room. Also Izabela has a partner who works in Switzerland that is why he spends half of the time there and half of the time in Poland. So we can say that there are four inhabitants but only two permanent.

House has a tarrace, garrage and also a small yard. When the family bought the house it was used as a two separate apartments that is why they demolished all the walls leaving only stairs and rearrange the space as it could be used as one.

TYPICAL DAY: On a typical day Izabela and her son both get up early and go to school/hospital or clinic. She works in couple places so each day looks different for her. Sometimes she has 24 hours duty at hospital, so she does not come back home for the night. If she does not want to leave her son alone for the night when her partner is at home they stay together and if not he spend the day with his father. Her son has various additional classes as well like guitar, english or italian classes which he attends ae school. When it is possible they eat together aer school and work and try to spend the evening together also. Sometimes she helps him study, just to motivate him. So most of the day they spend separatly and usually out of home.

Other days: Sometimes on the weekends Izabella also has to work but when she does not and her partner is at home they try to spend time together or the three of them go somewhere. When Jarek-her partner is at home despite that he has to work because his job requires working on a project on the computer. at is why he needs some quiet space to work during the day. Sometimes on the weekends her daughter visitsthem also, then there is more people at home.

Advantages of the house: -big space - small yard and tarrace - everyone has own private space - location:city center -big storage space- to keep equipment : like bikes, skis etc.

What is needed and necessary ?

- quiet space to work - space to soend time together (so as not to miss each other every time) - space to storage some things/equipment - room for guests (daughter when she visits)

Life inside a shared bedroom Matilde has been living in the apartment with her mother and her three pets for the past five years. Her day starts around 8:30 when she wakes up and get ready for work. By then her mother is already gone, so she gets some time to relax and watch some Netflix.

Giuseppina, Matilde’s mother, wakes up at around 7:30 a.m. As soon as she gets up she eats breakfast, takes a shower and eventually gets ready for work.

She usually gets back home around noon, but goes back to work at 4 and will not get home before late night. She likes to spend her free time at home relaxing either watching TV or reading magazines.

An important duty for them is taking care of the pets, as they are quite demanding; <<As soon as they wake up, they start begging for food, making as much noise as they can>>.

Giuseppina is the one in charge for feeding them in the morning, while her daughter takes care of their other needs during the day.

Both dwellers agree that the major problem of sharing the flat and even the bedroom is the total lack of privacy. As a matter of fact, Matilde cannot even host friends or her boyfriend, as she does not have her own private space. Furthemore, Matilde is really upset about the behaviour of her mother; she acts quite lazy and often smokes inside the flat, even if she asked her many times to not do it.

During week-ends Giuseppina is usually home from work and things become harder for both of them. Not having any sort of privacy means that they are not able to decide which activity to perform inside the flat and this is demaging their relantionship. To avoid fights Matilde spends as much time as possibile outside, hanging out with her friends or taking her dog around.

Matilde, how do you like sharing the bedroom with your mother?

“This situation in definetely not ideal for neither me or my mother, as we don’t get enough privacy. Furthemore, we don’t really get along with each other and often we end up fighting.

Also, she smokes quite a lot and I cannot stand the smell. I asked her to not do it inside the flat, but whenever I am gone, she does.”

Giuseppina, what is living with your daughter like?

“Sometimes she is a difficult person to deal with; often she starts fights over nothing.

I wish she dedicated more time to her pets. I am the one in charge for their needs, even if I told her many times I don’t want to be”.

Father with a 14 year old son HAKAN Hakan is a 54 years old, divorced father who lives with his son Kaan, in southern part of Turkey,AntalyaHe is a hardworking man and like to travel and outdoor activities.He and his son, both are not spending much time at home very much.They usually leave the house around 8 a.m. and return back home around 9 p.m. weekdays. KAAN Kaan is my cousin (uncleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s son) who is a student in middle school, who lives with his father Hakan in where he was born and raised, Antalya, Turkey.

He usually lives with my uncle but sometimes 1 day a week he sleeps at his mother apartment, who lives very nearby with Hakan. During the week-days he leaves house with Hakan to go to school around 8 a.m. and comes back to sleep. Most of the time they even eat outside. Weekends, they usually spend time together and doing outdoor activites together, or he has basketball practice with his team.

COMMENTS Hakan : - I wish I could spend more time in this house. The house is very big for 2 of us. The price is more expensive than usual, It has got 4 big rooms,2 extra fir us, but we like to take this house for the location.

Kaan : - The location is so much better than our old house and I am happier to be able to playHAKAN at the garden and spend more time with my friends.

Francesca’s habitat The nucleus is composed by two users: my friend Francesca and her mother.

Francesca is eighteen years old and she is a student, her mother is a professor in highschool.

Just few months ago they moved into this appartment because Francesca’s mother got diverced and the house where the lived before it was Francesca’s father. Francesca has got a brother but he decides to live with their father.

Francesca usually gets up at 7.00 am and at the same time her mother. They have breakfast togheter and they both go to school (in two different schools).

They both came back at home for lunch and have lunch togheter. In the afternoon Francesca does her homeworks in the livingroom and around 6.00 pm she brings her dog for a walk.

The mother spends the afternoon at school and cames back home to made dinner. Francesca’s mother has a boyfriend and sometimes he cames for dinner or sometimes she goes to her boyfriends house for a dinner and sometimes to sleep too.

In the livingroom the pass time together watching a movie or playing with their dog.

On the weekend Francesca’s spends time with her friends so usually she goes out on the afternoon or on the evening and the mother spends time with her boyfriend.

Personal comment: Francesca and her mother have a good relationship and it’s helps when you live in a small appartment.

They sleep together because the have just a bedroom in the house, they are more like friend than a mother with her daughter.

I might think that early Francesca will need more privacy exspecially when maybe she will have a boyfriend, and for the mother too because she is already in a relationship.

So the main critically iusse is the space about the bedroom, the livigroom and the kitcken are instead good spaces to spend the time together and have some friends at home.

Conflicts: 1. -Francesca and her mother have a relation more like SISTERS then mother and daughter; 2. - Both need more privacy, one shareing bedroom is not enought for them; 3. - Condivision spaces are good for two people, good spaces to spend time together and have some friends at home; 4. - Flat too small for a cuge dog.

A couple of seniors living together in a huge house, which was counted to host the whole big family of 3 generations. Half of the house is used rarely.

Vasyl still does some work, Tamara is not healthy enough to take the stairs up.

It is too big My grandparents live in a big house of 2 storeys with the area about 120m² each. Briefly talking, it consists of five bedrooms (1 downstairs, 4 upstairs), 2 bathrooms (one on each floor), living room, kitchen and dining room. What is also obligatory for a cold-mild climate is the antechamber space, which stops the cold coming from the entrance.

The house also has a basement, where are set such uninhabitable rooms as boiler room, cellar, sauna and ex-garage. Five years ago, after having fallen down of the slope and gaining a trauma, my grandfather has closed the underground garage with the new ground-level one.

The house stands on a land plot of about 3300m² with some lawn, fruit garden and traditional for Ukraine croft with berries and vegetables. There is also a cage with a dog, who is called to guard the house, but is always barking without any reason. Of course, we let it walk at night in the courtyard, so we are not that cruel to keep it always enclosed.

My grandpa Vasyl has built it immensely big, if we consider it as a house for 2 elder people, but from time to time it is fulfilled with all our big family: their three daughters’ families, in turn or together, and sometimes there happens a lack of rooms for us to sleep.

So, on the usual days Vasyl wakes up at 6:30, drinks two glasses of water and goes outside to feed the dog and do some exercises on the fresh air. In winter the latter is substituted by cleaning the snow in the yard. The food for the dog is prepared in the summer kitchen – a room with access from outside made for the cooking process in the warm time of the year .

Afterwards, he has breakfast and takes shower. Curiously, he always uses the bathroom downstairs, though his bedroom is upstairs, the shower there is a usual cabin with low plate and sliding doors, while downstairs there is a bathtub without a curtain against the water out flows and a shower holder. Another curiosity is that he keeps his shirts or sweaters in his bedroom wardrobe, while all his jackets and pants remain in the entrance wardrobe downstairs.

Between 7 and 8 o’clock my grandma Tamara wakes up and does her morning routine. She used to go to work very rarely, she could afford it because she is the co-founder of the company she worked in. Nowadays, she is rehabilitating herself after a surgery, so her life rhythm is quite slow now and not variable a lot.

By 8-8:30 grandpa is already left to work, and by 9 or 10 on certain days, a housemaid comes. It is not easy to maintain the cleanness in the house this big, especially for a couple of pensioners.

Grandpa always has lunch at home, at about 12:30. Afterwards, he takes a little noon sleep. Sometimes he doesn’t come back to work after it, so he does some households. Again, he is a chief, so he decides whether to work or not.

In the evening, after a modest supper, grandpa occupies the TV, where he watches different news releases, and at about 20:30 goes upstairs to read his newspapers. At the same time my grandma usually starts watching her TV-serials. The only inconveniency, which comes out here, is that she doesn’t hear very well, so she turns the sound louder. Even being on different floors and through 2 doors it disturbs the ear of my grandpa. By 10pm the house falls asleep: grandma Tamara downstairs, grandpa Vasyl – up.

So, what remains not underlined is that my grandma goes upstairs very rarely, as well as to the basement, due to her pain in the knees. Another obvious irrationality, which is seen in this house, is that it is difficult to manage heating in it. Most of the time the rooms which are not used, remain closed and with radiators switched off. These rooms get “active” only when we come to stay at theirs, which sometimes becomes an extreme scenario.

In two words, it is hard to share only two bathrooms for 7-10 people staying in one house, the small kitchen becomes overcrowded when there are 3 people working (summer kitchen solves this problem when it is worm), and my smaller brother and cousins turn the living room into a playing room and the hall upstairs – into battlefield with barricades. Having this lot of people belonging to the house also leads to the storage problems. All our families bring their old clothes, toys and goods to the cellars of the house. Luckily, what grandfather throws away occasionally is never demanded before or after.
