Since more than eight years, the abandoned concrete ‘skeleton’ is located in the northern periphery of Milan. In its unfinished structure the estate became a scenery of wilderness and degrade. The neighbourhood is characterized by both low and tall buildings along the new green area and sequences the upcoming appearance of the ex industrial area. The new design is intended to affect also the urban and social development of the district and will support the rising population of Adriano by providing different services for different users. Framed in its rough structure, the skeleton is designed as a landmark in Adriano district and will host a new chance of co-living. -3-

1.1 Overview
The skeleton as a landmark ‘a new living together’
Proges, the Italian leading provider of social services will be in charge of managing the new TSR located in the skeleton in Adriano district. Two thirds of the multifunctional building will host alzheimer, elderly and disabled people. The left side of the building which is facing the main street will host people in need for a temporary time. After investigations and interviews regarding the urban site and the society of Adriano, different typologies of city users came out. The understanding of - the people currently living in the area - the offer of activities -, the past and present state of the building to be reused, have been a crucial tool in the development of the design process. -5-
The area is characterized by a multicultural society with people from every ages and social backgrounds. Despite of everything it prevails a collective community which is involved in many cooperated activities. One of the main aim of the project supports the diversity of the developing district and aspires to bring the city inside the building, in order to create a dense space for a cultural exchange and an harmonic life sharing. The design respects every profile of people with general and housing needs. This open character of welcoming people shall support the community, outside and also inside the project. Also the presence of children and young people in the TSR will promote a dynamic living in the whole multifunctional building. The elderly people of the RSA will enjoy the young spirit and the co-living as a supporting act for everybody. A cooperation between all of the hosts will shape the new landmark of Adriano. Different people are intended to be accommodated together. To accomplish this co-living, the design consists of different sizes of individual ‘units’ which creates the private space. These units are variable to the amount of people. Different are the typologies of the living nucleus, satisfying all the specific needs of each users, from a single, to a couple, to a family, respecting the space for the individual freedom. The project aims to bring the Adriano community in the inside of the reused building. The space is shaped by different units of identity which are surrounded by the floating public space. This space is designed like a street in a city where people can come together to share they daily life. The strip is personally created by the inhabitants. Everyday they can frame they new idea of living. The individual space can be extended to the shared living together. Solitaires with a specific function in the public space create concentrated meeting points for an exchange. -6-

2.1 Adriano district

TSR
Periphery’ The building is located on via Adriano in the northeast boundary of Milan and lies between Viale Monza, Via Padova and Sesto S. Giovanni on the north. Since many years Adriano has been developing from an agricultural site to an industrial spot, that shaped the new structure of the city. The main structure is U- Shaped and encloses a big empty space in its square enclosure. This can be used as a Piazza or a gathering space for the users of the building giving more scope for socializing within the community proposed. -14-

IDENTITY
2.2 Design Values
-15-
Where starts identity? How do users share together?
How can we avoid the ghetto effect? How can we spread out movement and interaction in the building?
What is the building providing for the outside?
Identity starts where discomfort is. The discomfort starts where the community is and lies in the spontaneous interactions between the users that inhabit the shared space. Intimacy is a process by having control.
Dedicated spaces as ‘filters’ between the different uses instead of boundaries. Interactions in social relations rather than in special integration.
From the building to Adriano’s network. Bringing the outisde in the inside.
-16-
2.3 Design process
The existing structure The existing concrete skeleton consists of pillars in a slightly irregular structure, interrupted by a consistent staircase and an elevator. The ground floor is organized in a split level, whereas the three upper level have a similar homogeneous structure. The structure is a composite of RCC frame structure and modular cement block used in external shell and modular clay blocks for interiors. The windows and Community - city pattern doors exists now as empty fenestrations yet to be modulated. -17-

[Elements of temporariness and flexibility]
Different layers of identity specify the space of control. The continues interior is floating trough the captured area and creates a organization of various levels by a primary (private) and secondary (public) use. The secondary use shall remind on a Chinese street shaped by a lively shared community where everybody comes together to satisfy their diverse needs and interests by having an animated exchange. Fixed elements structure the closed unity and produce a intimate room of individuality. The space is characterized by comfort. The control of the users starts by flexible elements which are creating a buffer zone, filter between the private and the shared public space. These elements induce the users to arrange the spaces with different layouts according to various grades of intimacy. The partly translucent material filters the different layers of living and frames the sharing community. The residents are activated to extend the private unity via opening the filter zone to the shared space. -19-

The space is divided in primary and secondary use. Each floor has different functions in the public space to connect people from every floor and to build a collective living together. The individual distribution from layer to layer creates a dynamic development and brings activity in the daily routine. Also the staircase is an important medium for an exchange space. The building has consider as a whole concept to enjoy the offer. -21-

2.3.2 Layers of intimacy
Community city pattern Important for the design project was to respect the existing structure and to tell a story of this for a long time abandoned building. The new design consists of different modules, based on an uniform grid which are insert in the exiting structure. Each module has an independent construction and is structured by elements which are framing the space. This idea connects the history, the existing skeleton, with the future and creates a space to come together. -23-

4.3 Elements
The shape of all units is based on a general grid and is always a multiple of the smallest unit, 1m by 1m. On the surface it is defined by three elements with a different materiality. The drywall in wood is the basic structure for the fixed furniture and it is interrupted by full height windows. Each unit consists of an installation core with the bathroom framed by a concrete construction and arranges the space in two different layers: The private and the in between zone. The in between zone connected the public with the private space by means of wood and polycarbonate flexible walls. -55-
