When Judy Garland’s Dorothy declared ‘we’re not in Kansas anymore’, she couldn’t have known that she was redefining a classic; or that La Boite would team up with The Danger Ensemble and the Brisbane Festival to completely remake L. Frank Baum’s brilliant story and bring the wonderful Wizard of Oz screaming into the 21st century. Classics sit at the heart of this season. Holding the Man - in which Dorothy makes a guest appearance - is one of Australia’s great love stories. It has played around the world. But now we’ve assembled a new all-Queensland cast to breathe fresh life into the original production, a classic of the recent Australian theatre. Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie is one of the most loved plays of the American theatre – a gorgeous heartbreaker if ever there was one – but we have a hunch there’s a lot more to it and are keen to dust it off in a way that will give it a surprising new glow. Classics can be turned new, and the new can become classics. Food is a new play that sits on the La Boite menu along with Blue Love (2009), Stockholm (2010) and Tender Napalm (2012) as pieces in which dance and movement provide stunning new dimensions. Kate Champion’s dance theatre work is beautifully human, and her influence helps transform Steve Rodgers’ generous story into a delicious theatre experience. We wanted a new work for kids too, so we’ve teamed up with shake & stir theatre co to create Out Damn Snot. It finds inspiration in the classics – Macbeth and A Midsummer Night’s Dream – but all you really need to know is that it’s set in a vast pool of green slime. We’re certainly not in Kansas anymore.

“Fresh, frank and funny… a wrenchingly moving love story I defy anyone with a pulse not to relate to.” London’s Evening Standard
This is one of Australia’s great and enduring love stories. David Berthold’s definitive original production at last returns to Brisbane with an all new Queensland cast, following sell-out seasons at Griffin Theatre Company, Sydney Opera House, Belvoir, Brisbane Powerhouse, Melbourne Theatre Company and in London’s West End. In the 1970s, Tim wanted to be an actor and John was captain of the Under 15s. By the end of high school even their school yearbook acknowledged them as the year’s cutest couple. Breathtakingly honest and achingly funny, this is a heart-wrenching account of a 15-year relationship that weathered disapproval, separation, temptation and, finally, death. It’s a story and a celebration that speaks across generations, sexual preferences and cultures. 4

“Warm, substantial, and completely delicious. I recommend this play unreservedly.” Australian Stage On a stretch of Australian highway, two sisters run their family takeaway joint. Chiko Rolls and reminiscing are on the menu. While they quietly wage war with their past and dream up a brighter future, a young life-loving Turkish traveller arrives with a charm and sensuality that turns their world around. Their dreams become reality when they transform their run down fast-food stop into a restaurant showcasing Elma’s gift for comfort cooking. Audience members become restaurant guests as the sisters serve up Elma’s hearty minestrone soup, sour dough and local wines. Kate Champion’s Force Majeure is a ground-breaker in dance theatre and Belvoir is one of Australia’s great theatre companies. Food is a feast for the senses with an erotic mix of words and movement that will spice and stir in equal parts. Come share a meal in the intimacy of La Boite’s Roundhouse Theatre. Tennessee Williams was the greatest American playwright of the 20th century. This is his most loved play. After three pulsing productions of Shakespeare, director David Berthold puts his inimitable stamp on this spellbinding story of a family bursting at the seams. Laura Wingfield is painfully shy and her domineering mother Amanda desperately wants her married. Tom, our narrator, works in a factory to support the family but dreams of life as a poet. Pushed by his mother, he finds Laura a ‘gentleman caller’ to bring it all to a head. What unfolds is both tender and terrifying. This is a story made by a magician from music and memory, smiles and heartbreak. With a top-flight creative team, this reclothed classic promises to be an unmissable highlight in La Boite’s calendar. “Yes, I have tricks in my pocket, I have things up my sleeve. But I am the opposite of a stage magician. He gives you illusion that has the appearance of truth. I give you truth in the pleasant disguise of illusion.” Tom Director David Berthold Associate Director Harriet Gillies Designer Penny Challen with Caroline Kennison Kathryn Marquet

This is our challenge to The Danger Ensemble: to work with us in our main space to help bring this fabulous, fantastical, much-loved story to a new place of contemporary relevance. We’ve asked The Danger Ensemble to employ their matchless vision to expose the hopes and fears of our own realities, using L. Frank Baum’s original book and its 13 sequels. In 2013, who is the heroine? Who are those who lack courage? Who lack heart? Who lack brains? For this La Boite and Brisbane Festival world premiere event, we promise a fantasy equal to, but disturbingly different from, the Oz we know and love. What will be at the end of the rainbow? Not even the Wizard himself knows the answer yet, but we can’t wait to find out! “The only people worthy of consideration in this world are the unusual ones. For the common folks are like the leaves of a tree, and live and die unnoticed.” Scarecrow

A co-production with
La BOITE INDIE 2013 La Boite Indie is our platform for independent theatre in Brisbane - theatre made by artists coming together, often with few resources, to create work they passionately believe in. La Boite chips in with a reconfigured 100-seat theatre space, as well as financial, production, marketing and artistic support. Over the last three years, this has been our way of nurturing a sustainable independent theatre culture in Brisbane, cultivating new audiences across the city, enabling closer ties between independent practice and La Boite, and helping create outstanding theatre made with passion and rigour. In 2013 we’ll be doing it better, with QPAC joining Brisbane Airport Corporation in support of this vision. We’re proud to offer six La Boite Indie productions of dazzling range. We also invite you to get involved throughout the year to help us choose one of these six independent groups to move to QPAC in 2014. More on that anon…

It’s the simplest way to get the biggest discounts. The more you see, the more you save. You can see shows for as little as $22 a visit. They’re also incredibly flexible. You can choose the shows and dates now, or choose them later. You can even use a Season Ticket to see a show more than once. A 4-play Season Ticket, for example, means you can see four different shows once each, or you can take three friends as guests to see one show. But if you want to choose shows and dates later, remember that shows can sell out. Even as a Season Ticket holder, it’s essential to call us to book tickets for a specific show. Buying a Season Ticket also means you’re able to buy cheap tickets to La Boite Indie ahead of anyone else. Some of these special shows have extremely limited capacity – one just 6 people per performance. These shows won’t go on general sale until 1 March – but YOU can buy them now.
Season Tickets start at just $72 for a 3-play package. La Boite’s mission is to produce and present exhilarating theatre that is alive to the present, extends and inspires artists, and invigorates the hearts and minds of audiences. La Boite is one of Australia’s leading theatre companies. We believe in theatre, not just plays. We recognise that our distinctive space demands a theatre that celebrates the theatrical; that embraces movement, music and digital expression as well as the spoken word; that enables a fluid and sensual relationship between actor and audience. This is the language of the contemporary imagination. We believe in reaching out beyond our walls - to independent artists and teams, to key companies from Australia and beyond, to festivals, and into communities that are eager to participate in what we do. This is what it means to be connected to the world. We look to new Australian work, fresh international theatre, great texts of the past, and to collaborations with diverse artists and organisations. We look to converse with the times – to unwrap the past and scrutinise the present as a means of expressing our aspirations for the future.

La Boite is a place of possibilities. A place of passion, power and promise. To help secure our future, we’ve built a Wall of Light in our foyer; a permanent light feature honouring the names of our first 100 Light Donors. Donor names are etched in tiles that are mounted over LED lights, creating a beautiful moving background of light. If you wish to share in La Boite’s future and be part of the impassioned team of supporters who enable us to continue breaking new ground, become a Wall of Light Donor today. A one-off minimum donation of $1,000 will secure your name on the Wall of Light for 5 years. We believe that Brisbane deserves a theatre like ours. In getting behind us, by contributing to the Wall of Light, you can help make our theatre breathe. We need you.
