2014 IS THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF LA BOITE’S MOVE TO THE ROUNDHOUSE THEATRE. THAT’S A GOOD REASON FOR US TO SPLASH OUT. Here are 12 productions that are full of the vigour and rigour you’ve come to expect. Here is joyous comedy, high adventure, twists on the familiar and turns of the unexpected. That’s the life of our unique theatre space: close encounters of the vivid kind. This is a season driven by great writing. It’s wonderful to have so many spirited Australian writers joining us: David Burton, Claire Christian, Niz Jabour, Richard Jordan, Lally Katz, Kathryn Marquet, Louis Nowra and Sven Swenson, especially when they are joined by Henrik Ibsen, Roald Dahl and two of the most refreshing contemporary playwrights from either side of the Atlantic - Pulitzer Prize finalist Amy Herzog and Olivier Award-winning Mike Bartlett.
They are joined by artists as diverse as Missy Higgins, Jessica Marais, Leticia Cáceres, Steven Mitchell Wright, Jennifer Flowers, Trevor Stuart, Benjamin Schostakowski and Hugh Parker, in collaboration with inspiring partner organisations such as Melbourne Theatre Company, Brisbane Festival and shake & stir theatre co. This is theatre that is alive to the present with an eye on the future, and full of the glorious possibilities of adventurous storytelling. Want to join us? Just choose the Season Ticket that’s right for you and you’ll have a passport to a year of close and captivating encounters.

“SOMEONE’S JUST BROUGHT A DINNER GONG TO THE MUSIC OF THE SPHERES.” LOUIS NOWRA, COSI 2
This landmark new production of the beloved Australian comedy classic celebrates La Boite’s tenth anniversary at the Roundhouse Theatre. Young theatre director Lewis has just landed his first job straight out of university, staging a production of Mozart’s comic opera Così fan tutte. The catch? The cast are patients from a mental institution, none of whom can speak Italian… or sing. Can this unlikely cohort, including an obsessive-compulsive, a manic depressive and a junkie, pull it off? Or will a patient with a penchant for pyromania spoil all the fun?
As Vietnam War protests rage outside and Lewis confronts the enormity of his task, he begins to realise the frightening and attractive power of madness, politics, theatre and love. Directed by David Berthold, a long-time Louis Nowra collaborator, and starring Jessica Marais and James Stewart (Packed to the Rafters), Cosi is set to light up the Roundhouse stage.

THE PERFECT DATE SHOW: BRING HIM AND HER TIME OUT NEW YORK
This cheekily titled comedy earned rave reviews in London and New York, picking up an Olivier Award, and comes to us direct from its Australian premiere at Melbourne Theatre Company. Mike Bartlett’s razor-sharp play is directed by MTC Associate Director Leticia Cáceres, stars Green Room Award-winning Tom Conroy and is set to original music by multi ARIA Awardwinning singer-songwriter Missy Higgins. Three people battle it out in a theatrical cockfight to stake a claim on each other’s hearts.

John is dissatisfied with his relationship and wants out. Or maybe he just wants time out, a break from his needy boyfriend for a few weeks. Or maybe months. Actually, the whole problem is John doesn’t know what he wants. But while he’s thinking things through, he meets a girl, and is faced with a whole new world of possibilities and complications. Cock takes the classic story of the love triangle, turns it on its head and makes it feel utterly contemporary.

Here is a captivating new comedy about aliens, alienation and the terrifying and comforting thought that we are not alone. Insurance fraud investigator Joel Pinkerton doesn’t believe in aliens. So when his company introduced UFO abduction insurance as a publicity stunt a few years ago, he never gave it much thought. Until now. When Joel is called to investigate the possible alien abduction of 16-year-old schoolgirl Storm, he finds himself drawn into intergalactic intrigue and conspiracy theories. What happened to Storm during those missing 24 hours? And how did she wake up in an empty field 200km from home? As Joel gets sucked up in the vortex, he begins to feel increasingly alienated from his wife Holly and their newborn baby girl, who is exhibiting some very odd behaviours of her own… 6

“THE PARALLEL UNIVERSE OF LALLY KATZ’S IMAGINATION IS AN ESTRANGING, BREATHLESSLY ANXIOUS, UNEASILY HILARIOUS PLACE.” ALISON CROGGON, THE AUSTRALIAN 8
Nora seems to have it all - a successful husband, three adorable children and a beautiful home. But this picture perfect life is actually a complicated trap of secrets and lies. Here is a story of domestic revolution, marriage and motherhood, female empowerment and the journey towards self-liberation. Henrik Ibsen’s great psychological thriller was recently named as the world’s most performed play. And why wouldn’t it be? It’s brilliantly plotted, boasts striking characters, and tells a story that’s still as charged and moving as it was 135 years ago.
In a superb new version by Lally Katz, one of Australia’s most gifted playwrights, and directed by Steven Mitchell Wright, one of our most intrepid directors, this enduring masterpiece will be a highlight of La Boite’s season and the 2014 Brisbane Festival.

Think you know the stories of The Three Little Pigs, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, Goldilocks and Jack and the Beanstalk? Think again! Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes & Dirty Beasts bursts onto the Roundhouse stage in a spectacular new live show, taking the world’s best-loved fairy tales and rearranging them with some surprising and hilarious twists. Seriously funny and frighteningly silly, Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes & Dirty Beasts is the perfect January summer holiday entertainment especially for children 5 to 12. Following the slimy fun of Out Damn Snot, La Boite teams up with shake & stir once again for a world premiere live show that’s sure to delight and disgust in equal measures. “A quick glance around the audience showed there were just as many adults slapping their thighs as there were children squealing with laughter.” The Courier-Mail on Out Damn Snot

IN 2010 WE CREATED A NEW PLATFORM FOR INDEPENDENT THEATRE IN BRISBANE. SINCE THEN, LA BOITE INDIE HAS FOSTERED A BRILLIANT BLOSSOMING, DEEPLY IMPACTING THEATRE AND PERFORMANCE RIGHT ACROSS THE CITY AND BEYOND. Independent theatre is theatre made by artists coming together, often with few resources or little infrastructure, to create work they passionately believe in. It is the wellspring of the theatre ecology. La Boite Indie sees the Roundhouse Theatre transformed into a 95-seat space. Sometimes we venture into even smaller spaces. La Boite provides financial, technical, marketing and artistic assistance. Crucially, La Boite Indie works to create pathways to propel these independent companies to even greater opportunities. The Harbinger moved from La Boite Indie to La Boite’s mainhouse season and will tour nationally in 2014. After creating two productions for La Boite Indie, The Danger Ensemble moved to our mainhouse to co-produce The Wizard of Oz with La Boite and the Brisbane Festival. A Tribute of Sorts came to life for La Boite Indie and will feature as a part of Queensland Theatre Company’s season in 2014. Sarah Winter’s A Dinner With Gravity also premiered as part of La Boite Indie, and has had further performances in Iceland. One of the companies presented at La Boite Indie 2013 will move to the Queensland Performing Arts Centre in 2014. This partnership with QPAC will continue, enabling one of the independent companies in La Boite Indie 2014 to move to QPAC in 2015. La Boite Indie’s aims are clear and considerable: to nurture a sustainable independent theatre culture in Brisbane, to enable closer ties between independent practice and La Boite, to help create outstanding theatre made with passion and rigour, and to cultivate new audiences for theatre right across the city. We thank QPAC and the Brisbane Airport Corporation, who join us so enthusiastically in this shared vision, and above all the independent companies and artists who make up La Boite Indie 2014.

For this special La Boite Indie event, playwright Sven Swenson (The Truth About Kookaburras) delivers two new interconnected works from the Sundial Plays: Angel Gear and Dangerfield Park, playing in repertory through the season. In Angel Gear, Gary is plunged into a world of drugs, prostitution and an utter disregard for human life when he reconnects with the father and half-brothers he never knew. Not for the faint hearted, this claustrophobic stage thriller proves blood isn’t always thicker than water. Set just an hour away, but worlds apart, Dangerfield Park explores the impact of a brutal gay bashing on a tight-knit circle of friends. As the accused invokes the Gay Panic Defence, and the men brace for the political and legal turbulence ahead, they learn that violence, hatred and even love sometimes come from surprising sources.

Raised in Iraq, theatre maker Niz Jabour grew up with the folk stories of Mullah Nasrudin. Adapted from Euripides’ play and brought to life by a cast of over 20 performers, Or Forever Hold Your Peace is a compelling conversation about the nature of democracy, leadership and the power of the collective voice. Faced with their impending deployment to the Trojan War, a troop of gung-ho soldiers with nothing to lose demand from their leader something unspeakable. Using a sham wedding to the handsome warrior Achilles as bait, Agamemnon lures his daughter to Aulis and sets in motion a chain of events that brings an empire to ruin.

La Boite’s mission is to produce and present exhilarating theatre that is alive to the present, extends and inspires artists, and invigorates the hearts and minds of audiences. It has profoundly influenced the ecology of theatre in Queensland and lives as one of Australia’s leading theatre companies. We believe in theatre, not just plays. We recognise that our distinctive space demands a theatre that celebrates the theatrical; that speaks to the contemporary imagination by embracing movement, music and digital expression as well as the spoken word; that enables a fluid and lively relationship between actor and audience. Ours is an emphatically democratic space: a big, buoyant shared room. There is no other theatre like it in Brisbane.
26
We look to new Australian work, fresh international theatre and reframed classic texts. We look to converse with the times – to unwrap the past and scrutinise the present as a means of expressing our aspirations for the future. We believe in creating a powerful platform for independent artists and ensuring that there are clear pathways for ongoing opportunity and growth. We seek collaboration with diverse artists and organisations as a means of building the connectedness of our theatre, enhancing Queensland’s reputation as a cultural hub, and stimulating an authentically national conversation with Queensland as a leading voice. We believe that all of these things are part of what it means to be in the contemporary world, to be alive to the present.
Did you know that only 65% of our funding comes from ticket sales and government funding? The other 35% is where you come in. Donations, bequests and regular giving are the lifeblood of the theatre. Any donation large or small goes directly to supporting the creativity and passion of our artists. You don’t have to earn a lot to give a little. Your donation can have a huge and immediate impact • $100 supports a young person in our Ambassadors Program, providing free workshops and tickets to our Mainhouse Season • $500 allows more valuable time in the rehearsal room to develop a new piece • $1,000 enables a playwright-in-residence to work with a professional dramaturg • $5,000 can help us take a show on the road to regional Queensland, nationally and internationally • $12,500 provides a commission to a playwright to write a new play for us to produce.
"DONATING TO LA BOITE IS MY SPECIAL WAY OF MAKING A SMALL CONTRIBUTION TOWARDS CURRENT AND FUTURE PRODUCTIONS. I ALSO WANT MY YOUNG CHILDREN TO EXPERIENCE THE LA BOITE MAGIC THAT MY HUSBAND AND I ENJOY EACH SEASON." LANA GISHKARIANY, DONOR
THE WALL OF LIGHT We’ve built a Wall of Light in our foyer: a permanent light feature honouring the names of our top 100 donors. We’d like you to be among them. A one-off, minimum donation of $1,000 will secure your name on the Wall of Light until the end of 2017. Join the Wall of Light, and you’ll be joining an impassioned group of supporters who enable us to continue breaking new ground.
AMBASSADORS CIRCLE This is a very special part of our giving program, supporting 180 student ambassadors in a year long program of free tickets, workshops and events, and inspiring young high school and university students to get involved and introduce their friends and family to the joy of theatre.
BEQUESTS We are very grateful to have received a generous bequest from the late Eileen Beatson, a supporter of La Boite for many decades. Eileen’s bequest will be going directly to funding our emerging artist programs developing the next generation of Queensland artists. If you’d like to include a gift to La Boite in your will please contact Liz Tupas on the details below.
HOW? Simply add a donation to your Season Ticket purchase. You can also donate online at laboite.com.au or by calling our Development Manager Liz Tupas on (07) 3007 8600.

FOR ANYONE
FOR TEACHERS
For adults, these weekly masterclasses are an opportunity to hone your performance skills and work with artists from all over the country – including guest tutors from our mainhouse shows.
Thousands of students enjoy our productions every year. We aim to make it easy and affordable to bring groups to the theatre. Teachers can access units of work related to each show in advance, and students can participate in backstage tours and meet the artists discussions.
ACTING MASTERCLASSES
MEET THE ARTISTS Get the inside scoop. Come to our Meet the Artists performances (see Performance Calendar on page 22) and get answers to your burning question in a relaxed Q&A session.
FOR ARTISTS We are committed to increasing the diversity of artists and stories on our stages. We offer a range of opportunities for artists including our Playwrights-in-Residence program, workshops, forums, and annual general auditions. To keep up to date, subscribe to our Artist Register at laboite.com.au.
FOR STUDENTS LA BOITE AMBASSADORS
Our Ambassadors Program is a year-long opportunity for almost 200 high school and tertiary students from across Brisbane and beyond. La Boite Ambassadors take a leadership role in introducing the work of the company to their peers, schools and families. In return, La Boite Ambassadors receive a golden ticket to the company, attending all productions for free, meeting with creative teams, enjoying free workshops throughout the year and learning about La Boite programs.
SEE A SHOW
STUDENT WORKSHOPS La Boite offers a range of workshop opportunities for students, either at La Boite or in your school. For all of our mainhouse productions, we run a related two-hour workshop that provides an introduction to the world of the play, and focuses on either acting, directing or design. We also offer workshops in Brecht & political theatre, Shakespeare or clown and comedy, or can devise a workshop to meet your needs.
TEACHER FEATURE A day to talk theatre, see theatre and make theatre. Participate in a workshop with La Boite Artistic Director David Berthold, then enjoy a relaxed drink with colleagues and watch the latest La Boite mainhouse production from reserved seats.
FAST
FESTIVAL OF AUSTRALIAN STUDENT THEATRE FAST is the annual national festival of theatre made by tertiary students and recent graduates. The fifth FAST, proudly supported by La Boite and QUT Creative Industries, will be presented over three days, 3-5 October 2014. It is set to be a fascinating few days of exhilarating performance and rousing discussion: a snapshot of the future of Australian theatre.
