La Boite is a story of people, passion, purpose and place. People like Barbara Sisley, who in 1916 found herself stranded in Brisbane when her theatrical touring company unexpectedly disbanded. She along with literature academic J. J. Stable formed the Brisbane Repertory Theatre Society in 1925 in response to the public’s growing appetite for high quality, locally-produced theatre. For twenty years, Sisley and Stable reigned supreme in Brisbane’s theatrical community. After decades of moving between large venues such as the Theatre Royal and Albert Hall, in 1967 the company finally found a home of its own. Company members (including Muriel Watson, pictured right) converted an old Queenslander in Hale St, Milton into a theatre-in-the-round. Hollowed out, the house had the appearance of a box and the name ‘La Boite’ was born. In 1972, the company moved next door to the Blair Wilson designed theatre, which so many remember with such fondness. This remained home for three decades, before the move to our current Roundhouse Theatre in Kelvin Grove. 90 years of existence takes resilience and ingenuity. La Boite has survived two World Wars, censorship, public outrage, politically-charged programming, changing tastes, floods and the constant flirting with failure that comes with walking the tightrope between risk and certainty. Ultimately, La Boite’s history is your history. Whether you have been with us for years or are new to the fold, we welcome you to join us as we move into our next 90 years.

BROWSE OUR ONLINE ARCHIVE & SHARE YOUR STORY To celebrate our 90th birthday, we are gathering hundreds of programs, posters and paraphernalia in a special online archive. Play your part by donating past programs, images, articles and uploading your personal anecdotes from La Boite’s eventful history. As the archive evolves over the year, everyone will be able to search for their favourite production or fondest memory. Go to 90years.laboite.com.au to make your contribution. This project is proudly funded by a Community History Grant from Brisbane City Council.

“We were a company of actors with no theatre we could afford to work in. So we found an old Queenslander, knocked down the internal walls and used the timber to build seats on all four sides, making a stage in the centre. This was La Boite’s first home.” Muriel Watson, 90, La Boite Life Member

In 2015, La Boite celebrates 90 years of trailblazing theatre. And I’m proud to be presenting my first season as Artistic Director. It’s an anniversary, but a kind of a housewarming too. Whichever way you look at it, we are marking the occasion with a diverse program that will excite your senses, ignite your imagination, engage your intellect and remind you of the unique power of live theatre. This cocktail of remixed classics, new Australian stories, highly physical theatre and family favourites encapsulates La Boite’s work over the last 90 years - but it’s also utterly contemporary. We bring you two greats of our canon, re-imagined in very different ways. A Midsummer Night’s Dream is remodeled as a kitsch suburban fantasia and Euripides’ Medea is set against a backdrop of the new, super-wealthy global elite, in what will be my directorial debut for La Boite. I can’t wait! Our commitment to family audiences continues with a new adaptation of Kenneth Grahame’s evergreen favourite The Wind in the Willows, starring Play School’s Luke Carroll in a one-man tour-de-force, as well as a return season of last year’s smash hit, Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes & Dirty Beasts. La Boite’s 90 years have been shaped by the enduring influence of inspiring women – names like Babette Stephens, Jennifer Blocksidge and Sue Rider spring to mind – and in 2015, women’s voices are as strong as ever. Three of four new commissions are by female playwrights and two of five Mainhouse shows are directed by women. In all, women constitute half of the key creative artists across Mainhouse and Indie shows. Theatre provides a reflection, interrogation and celebration of the world outside its walls. Outside La Boite is a highly multicultural society – it’s one of the distinctive features and strengths of our state. So we have been

working hard to unearth and develop culturally diverse artists and stories. Prize Fighter will bring five of our top African-Australian actors to the Roundhouse stage and Samson will feature a highly diverse cast of young actors. Across our Mainhouse program, very close to half of the actors will be from non-Anglo backgrounds. Our five Artists-in-Residence in 2015 are from five distinct cultural backgrounds, seeding a range of projects, ensuring that we will continue this commitment in coming years. As it has done for much of its 90 years, La Boite will provide a platform for distinctive new Queensland voices. We will be presenting the plays of three of our previous Playwrightsin-Residence in the Mainhouse program, and La Boite Indie returns with a typically diverse suite of shows traversing contemporary dance, queer philosophical sci-fi and magic realism. In La Boite’s 90th year, I am so grateful for the opportunity to contribute to its rich and unique history. I would like to thank the wonderful, committed staff and board of La Boite for their tireless work in bringing this program together and the vibrant artistic community of Queensland for making me feel so welcome. I look forward to seeing you in the Roundhouse foyer in this very special year. Come as you are. You needn’t bring anything but a spirit of curiosity and an appetite for adventure.

“Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing - absolutely nothing half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.” This summer school holidays, bring your little badgers to a charming tale of adventure and discovery, in a brand-new one-man adaptation - starring Luke Carroll (Play School, Black Diggers). Kenneth Grahame’s rollicking tale of four woodland creatures is one of the true enduring classics of children’s literature and writer/director team Maxine Mellor and Kat Henry have given it a fresh coat of paint. Join Ratty, Mole, Badger and the incorrigible Mr. Toad on their journeys, trials and misadventures around the river, the Wild Woods and beyond. Full of heart and humour, The Wind in the Willows gently addresses some of the big questions about humanity, time and the value of friendship. For children aged 4 - 12 and anyone who enjoys messing about in boats.

Roundhouse Theatre 7 - 17 January School Holiday Workshop Why not book your little woodland creatures into our school holiday workshops? For five days they will explore magical worlds through imaginative drama-based play. For ages 6 - 12. From 13 January. See page 18 for details.

Shakespeare Benjamin Schostakowski

DIRECTED AND ADAPTED BY WITH

Emily Burton, Brian Lipson, Kathryn Marquet & Christen O’Leary

A wildly original take on Shakespeare’s magical romantic comedy. Four awkward teens find themselves entangled in a god-awful love quadrangle. A sextet of amateur drama enthusiasts earnestly rehearse a play for a wedding. The Godfather and Godmother of the fairies are locked in a bitter argument over an adopted child, which they seek to resolve through the careless application of dodgy witchcraft. Benjamin Schostakowski, director of multi award-winning A Tribute of Sorts, transplants Shakespeare’s enchanted lovers, fools and fairies from the wilderness of Athens to a nostalgia-tinged vision of Australian suburbia. Think lava lamps, slide nights and macramé wall-hangings. A Midsummer Night’s Dream promises to deliver a sensuous cocktail of hyper-theatricality; equal parts strange, dark and hilarious. “Shows like this make your heart sing, as they take off into new and always expanding realms, exploring what theatre can do by building on old traditions.” Crikey on A Tribute of Sorts February

A La Boite and Belvoir co-production

DIRECTOR

BY Julia-Rose Lewis Kristine Landon-Smith DESIGNER Michael Hilli

WITH

Ashleigh Cummings

Rising star Ashleigh Cummings (Puberty Blues, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries) makes her La Boite debut in this heartfelt ode to the resilience of the young. Essie, Beth and Sid are on the cusp of adulthood at the arse-end of the world. Together in a small Queensland town they laugh, sunbathe, fight, dream and pray for some kind of future that they can’t quite picture. The accidental death of a friend has torn apart all their assumptions about loyalty, love and life. And when a new kid comes to town with his own secrets and baggage, their fragile equilibrium faces a fresh test. Barely-healed wounds are reopened, new allegiances are formed and, finally, new futures become possible. In Samson, La Boite’s previous Playwright-in-Residence, Julia-Rose Lewis, has created a big-hearted, brutal and darkly beautiful play which offers a window into the world of young Australians today. We are delighted to be co-producing this World Premiere season with Sydney’s iconic theatre company Belvoir, under the internationally regarded direction of Kristine Landon-Smith.

Helen Christinson & Christen O’Leary

Christen O’Leary (Bombshells, Gloria) and Helen Christinson (A Doll’s House) face off in this heart-stopping, newly-minted adaptation of Euripides’ tale of betrayal and revenge. When Medea fell for Jason, she fell hard. Hard enough to sacrifice everything to be with him. She deceived her father, committed murder, left the comforts of her homeland and bore him two sons. So when a power-hungry Jason takes up with a younger woman, Medea’s humiliation quickly turns to revenge and a horrible plan is hatched. Nothing is off limits. No one is safe. Not even the children. Acclaimed Australian playwright Suzie Miller’s elegant adaptation will be played in the round, in Chris Kohn’s La Boite directorial debut.

Join us ringside for Brisbane Festival 2015 as we transform the Roundhouse into a boxing arena and take you on a high-impact ride from Africa to Australia and back again. A talented young boxer, Isa, is preparing for the biggest fight of his career. On the line is the national title and the promise of fame and riches beyond his wildest dreams. What unfolds is a modern-day fable of a Congolese boy orphaned by war and forced to become a child soldier by the very people who killed his family. His powerful left hook offers a new life in Australia, but his greatest obstacle is not his opponent – it’s his past.

WHAT BIRTHDAY GIFT DO YOU GIVE A 90-YEAR-OLD? This birthday is going to be a big one. We’re not only celebrating 90 years of extraordinary theatre, we are also celebrating 90 years of behind-the-scenes friendships, passion and support. To do this, we’re planning a calendar of events bringing together our many supporters, friends and colleagues - and we want you to be a part of it. Over the years, the generous gifts of our donors have allowed us to develop the careers of dozens of new theatre artists; provide free and discounted tickets to young audience members; tour productions to regional and remote parts of Australia and invest in our unique home, the Roundhouse Theatre. In this landmark year, we are launching some exciting new fundraising programs which offer diverse opportunities for you to demonstrate your passion for the company. Please consider adding a tax-deductible donation to your Season Ticket Form or donate by calling our Philanthropy Manager on (07) 3007 8600.

TAKE A SEAT

The best seat in the house could be yours. Put your name on your favourite seat, give a unique gift to mark a special occasion, or create a memorial tribute to a friend. Imagine the joy of showing your family and friends ‘your’ seat in the Roundhouse Theatre. This is a 90th Anniversary-only opportunity. A $250 tax-deductible gift will acknowledge your seat for a year and $500 donation will claim it for life.

THE WALL OF LIGHT

Let us etch your name on our award-winning Wall of Light in the Roundhouse foyer. Join our founding private and corporate donors by making a public and highly visible gift to support La Boite. A $1,000 tax-deductible donation will secure your name on the Wall. You can add a Wall of Light tile to your Season Ticket Booking Form or call us to donate.

GIFT A TICKET

Also launching in 2015 is the opportunity to donate a ticket to a young person. Your $25 gift will help us continue to provide 10,000 free and discounted tickets to young people every year. Your gift can help to instil in a young person a life-long love of theatre.

AMBASSADORS CIRCLE

Each year with your support we invest in 180 young Queenslanders – high school and tertiary students from all over the state. Our young Ambassadors attend all of our productions for free, meet leading creative professionals, participate in free workshops, and introduce their friends to the theatre experience. In 2015, we are very proud to be welcoming our 1,000th Ambassador to the program.

BEQUEST PROGRAM

Have you ever thought about leaving a legacy gift in your will? La Boite’s Bequest Program can help those who would like to make a meaningful gift now, to be realised at the end of their life, and enjoy the special privileges this type of gift generates. We are very grateful to have recently received a generous bequest from the late Eileen Beatson, a supporter of La Boite for many decades. Eileen’s bequest will directly fund our emerging artist programs to develop the next generation of Queensland artists.
