Dear Guest Para muitos, a pandemia do Covid-19 fez com que os valores mais importantes viessem à superfície. Como a família, por exemplo. Em momentos maus, como este que atravessamos, apoiamo-nos sempre na família. Por força das circunstâncias dos tempos de confinamento, passámos a estar mais tempo junto dos nossos e apercebemo-nos de como realmente importa ter a família unida, onde todos se apoiam mutuamente. Na verdade, estamos todos ligados. Quando um está bem, ficamos todos bem, mas quando um está mal, não conseguimos ficar bem. A rede – o amor e o alento que uma família unida nos traz – torna-nos capazes de ultrapassar os maiores obstáculos e continuar a caminhar na vida com Esperança.

Esta consciência de unidade não se aplica somente aos nossos familiares, pais, irmãos e filhos, mas sim a todo o mundo e a tudo o que nele existe. Tudo! Esta pandemia mostrou como estamos todos interligados e como todos interferimos na vida uns dos outros, pois quando um cai, podemos todos cair. É com este espírito de união que lhe dou as boas vindas à 20ª edição da WINK, que dedicamos à Esperança. Esperança na bondade da vida e de que melhores tempos virão, em que ultrapassaremos as provações vividas neste difícil período, de inibição, privação e até perda para muitos e para as suas famílias. Nesta edição homenageamos a família, nos momentos inesquecíveis vividos no Hotel Pestana Palace Lisboa, Pousada Palácio de Queluz e no restaurante Cozinha Velha, assim denominado por ter sido ali a cozinha do Palácio de Queluz. Viajamos também para a natureza de Tróia e ao nosso Eco-Resort, visitámos a Comporta e ainda sem sair de Portugal, a internet permitiu-nos sonhar e viajar por terras distantes. Um email de um dos nossos hóspedes levou-nos a recordar o Pestana Bazaruto, em Moçambique. E como viajar começa na imaginação, esperamos inspirar-vos a uma próxima viagem, assim que possível. Haja Esperança e vontade... Em qualquer um dos nossos destinos, estaremos à vossa espera de braços abertos. E assim terminamos a WINK 20. Na esperança de que não seja um adeus, mas sim um até já.

For many, the Covid-19 pandemic brought to light their most important values, such as family values. In troubled times like these, we always lean on our family for support. Due to lockdown we started spending more time with our nearest and dearest and realized just how important it is to be together as family, mutually supporting each other. In fact, we are all connected. When one member of the family feels good, we all feel good, but when someone feels bad, we just can’t help feeling bad ourselves. Our family and the love and encouragement that a united family provides, make us capable of overcoming even the greatest of obstacles so we can continue to live our lives with hope. This awareness of unity does not just apply to our family, parents, siblings and children... but to the whole world and everything contained in it. Absolutely everything! This pandemic has shown us just how interconnected we all are and how we all take part in each other’s lives, because when one falls, we may all fall. It is in this spirit of unity that I welcome you to the 20th edition of WINK, which we dedicate to hope. Hope in the goodness of life. Hope for better days ahead when we will overcome all the trials and tribulations of this difficult period of inhibition, deprivation and even loss, for many and their families. In this edition we pay tribute to the family, the unforgettable times spent at the Hotel Pestana Palace Lisboa, Pousada Palácio de Queluz and the Cozinha Velha restaurant, the former kitchen of the Palace of Queluz. We also traveled to nature, to our Eco-Resort in Tróia and Comporta and, without ever leaving Portugal, the internet allowed us to dream and travel to distant lands. This reminds me of a wonderful email we received from one of our guests who stayed at the Pestana Bazaruto, in Mozambique. Travelling starts in the imagination and we hope to inspire you to travel, as soon as it is possible to do so! Let there be hope and will... Enjoy our 20th edition and hope to see you soon! LOST iN T Tudo passa, tudo é impermanente... Sabemos que não podemos continuar parados por muito mais tempo, ou a esperar para ver o que o futuro trará. Temos de retomar a nossa caminhada. Por muito difícil que nos seja, há que passar o cabo das tormentas, que também é da boa esperança. Entre o presente e o futuro, há a Esperança. Que é como um raio de sol em dia de tempestade, a Iluminar o caminho, dando força para o percorrer. Esperança é o tema que destacamos nesta edição da WINK, apresentando um texto de José Tolentino Mendonça, um excerto sobre o poder da esperança, do seu recente livro. Convidámos também Maria Ferreira da Silva, Miguel Guimarães e Joaquim Parra Marújo a partilharem os seus pensamentos e sentimentos sobre o tema, para que nos inspirem Esperança nesta era de mudança. Neste número 20, em que também comemoramos o 10º aniversário, festejamos “em casa” e com quem nos é mais próximo. Com a família, fomos passar uns dias no Pestana Palace Lisboa, levámos as crianças a passear ao Palácio de Queluz e almoçámos na Cozinha Velha, o restaurante da Pousada de Queluz. Para sentir a natureza, viajámos até Tróia. Atravessámos o rio Sado na companhia de golfinhos, para um fim-desemana no Pestana Tróia Eco-Resort. Bem ali perto, visitámos a Comporta e os arrozais, lembrando o Pedro Espírito Santo e a Comporta que ele inventou, numa propriedade que era da sua família e que cativou muitos e inspirou alguns, como Pierre Bouissou, que a homenageia com a criação do seu perfume “Alma da Comporta”. Seleccionámos algumas fotografias de tantos bons momentos que vivemos ao longo destes 10 anos WINK, recordando o que nos pareceu um sonho. Ocorre-nos a famosa frase de Ludwig Wittgenstein: “A nossa vida é um sonho, mas às vezes acordamos, apenas o suficiente para saber que estamos sonhando”. Não esqueceremos as maravilhosas camas onde acordávamos e donde saltávamos, só para não perder os deliciosos pequenos-almoços e tudo o mais que nos esperava a cada momento: natureza deslumbrante, cidades estimulantes, as pessoas dali e as diferentes culturas que conhecemos e fotografámos, vivendo encontros surpreendentes e experiências memoráveis… A WINK cumpre 10 anos de vida... 20 edições e 80 viagens pelo globo e pelo incrível país que é Portugal. Visitámos lugares e destinos em todo o mundo onde há Hotéis Pestana, o maior grupo hoteleiro português.

Foi um dos propósitos que julgo ter contribuído para lhe dar ânimo, força e esperança, e essa esperança foi fundamental para que ultrapassasse momentos de saúde mais difíceis e delicados. Graças a isso, editámos juntos esta vigésima edição da WINK. Bem Haja! Acredito que ter um propósito nos dá esperança; e que a desesperança é o resultado da falência de qualquer propósito. THOUGHTS Everything passes, everything is impermanent... We know that we cannot stand still for much longer, nor wait and see what the future holds for us. We must resume our journey. As difficult as it may seem, we need to ride out the storm, because between the present and the future, there is hope. Which is like a ray of sunshine on a rainy day, lighting up the way and giving us strength to follow it. Hope is the central theme of this edition. An excerpt from José Tolentino Mendonça’s latest book, discusses the power of hope. We also invited Maria Ferreira da Silva, Miguel Guimarães and Joaquim Parra Marújo to share their thoughts and feelings on the topic, inspiring hope in this era of change. This, our 20th edition of WINK, also celebrates our 10th anniversary. We commemorate these 10 years “at home” with our nearest and dearest. Together with the family, we went to spend a few days at the Pestana Palace, took the children for a walk to Queluz Palace and had lunch at Cozinha Velha, the Pousada de Queluz’s renowned restaurant. To feel closer to nature, we head to Tróia, crossing the Sado river estuary in the company of dolphins, for a weekend at the Pestana Tróia Eco-Resort. We visited Comporta nearby and its rice paddies, remembering Pedro Espírito Santo and the Comporta he created on the land belonging to his family. Pedro’s vision and unique style captivated and inspired many, such as Pierre Bouissou, who created a wonderful perfume that pays tribute to Comporta. We selected some photographs of the countless happy moments spent over the past decade, remembering what had felt like a dream to us. Ludwig Wittgenstein’s famous quote comes to mind: “Our life is a dream, but sometimes we wake up, just enough to know that we are dreaming”. We will never forget the wonderful beds we woke up in and would jump out of, so as not to miss the delicious breakfasts and everything else that awaited us at each destination: Stunning nature, stimulating cities and cultures, fascinating people who we had the privilege of meeting and photographing, truly surprising encounters and memorable experiences... WINK celebrates its 10th year... 20 editions and 80 trips across the globe and discovering Portugal, an incredible country. We visited places and

destinations scattered all over the world where the Pestana Hotels are present, Portugal’s largest hotel group. We dedicate this vivid dream to all our magnificent travel companions and especially to our readers, for whom we created WINK. We thank the artists, personalities and opinion leaders who we were privileged enough to have met, interviewed and featured in our magazine. We thank all our contributors and the WINK creative and production team, who shared experiences that will remain with us forever. We are so grateful to all the members of staff at the hotels and Pousadas who always welcomed us with open arms and fully supported us. Médico de formação, especializado em cosmetologia e MBA pela HEC, Pierre Bouissou tem uma carreira de trinta anos em cosméticos e produtos de luxo. Hoje, é um especialista muito conceituado em cuidados com a pele, reconhecido internacionalmente, em particular, na Ásia-Pacífico e no Japão. Na área da cosmética, atuou em grandes grupos como a Unilever (mercado de massa: Pond’s), L’Oréal (farmácia: Vichy / La Roche Posay), Laboratoires Pierre Fabre (Avène) e LVMH (varejo seletivo: Dior). No sector de luxo, trabalhou para a LVMH (linha premium anti-envelhecimento da Dior, artigos de couro da Berluti) e Kering (jóias e relógios refinados da Boucheron). É um especialista em todos os aspectos do negócio de luxo graças aos vários cargos-chave que ocupou, incluindo Diretor da Unidade de Negócios de tratamento da Dior, Gerente Geral da Berluti e Presidente e CEO da Boucheron. Todo esse know-how levou-o a criar a PB Strategy, empresa de consultoria em estratégia, especializada em identidade e desenvolvimento de marcas. A sua rede de especialistas em vários campos (como comunicação, merchandising e formulação) permite-lhe criar para as marcas um plano de desenvolvimento internacional exclusivo feito à medida. Originário de Nice, mas criado em Paris, é na Comporta que encontra agora o seu paraíso onde toda a paz e tranquilidade da costa sudoeste de Portugal lhe trouxeram doces memórias de infância, despertando toda a sua criatividade, na sua forma mais pura. Em 2019 abraçou um dos seus maiores desafios até ao momento, materializando o seu amor pela Comporta na marca “Alma da Comporta” Numa entrevista recente, Pierre Bouissou falou à WINK sobre esta sua última marca, um “must have”.

In cosmetics, he has officiated for major groups such as Unilever (Pond’s), L’Oréal (pharmacy: Vichy/La Roche Posay), Laboratoires Pierre Fabre (Avène) and LVMH (selective retailing: Dior). In the field of luxury, he has worked for LVMH (premium anti-ageing range by Dior, leather goods by Berluti) and Kering (refined jewellery and timepieces by Boucheron). He is a specialist in all aspects of the luxury business thanks to the various key positions he has held, including Director of Dior’s treatment Business Unit, General Manager of Berluti and President and CEO of Boucheron. All this know-how has led him to create PB Strategy, a strategy consulting company specialised in brand identity and brand development. His network of experts in every field (such as communication, merchandising and formulation) enables him to devise unique, tailor-made international development plan for brands. Originally from Nice but raised in Paris, it is in Comporta that he has now found his paradise, where all the peace and tranquillity of the southwest coast of Portugal have brought back sweet childhood memories, awakening all his creativity, in its purest form. In 2019 he embraced one of his greatest challenges yet, materializing his love for Comporta in the Alma da Comporta brand. In a recent interview, Pierre Bouissou spoke to WINK about his latest must-have brand.

Qual é a sua memória de viagem mais antiga? P.B. Viajei muito durante a minha carreira, com uma predilecção pela Ásia e Japão Os cuidados são uma área extremamente importante para eles, com diferentes produtos da Europa. Utilizam entre 9 e 14 produtos (na Coreia) para cada ritual de cuidados. Tenho uma sensibilidade acrescida para o Japão: um gosto pela perfeição, pelo detalhe da humildade.

What is your greatest travel memory? P.B. I travelled a lot throughout my career with a predilection for Asia and Japan. Care is an extremely important area for this part of the world, with a preference for European products. In Korea, for example, they use between 9 and 14 products in their skincare routine. I have increasingly strong feelings for Japan: their taste for perfection in the humble details.

Quando foi a primeira vez que viajou por conta própria, sem os seus pais ou a supervisão de um adulto? P.B. A minha primeira viagem foi quando tinha 17 anos e voei para Nova Iorque, a grande aventura, o sonho americano. Tudo era possível. Sentiamo-nos lindos e invulneráveis. Muitos dos meus amigos foram viver para lá e voltaram de lá diferentes. Foi nesta cidade que identifiquei claramente o meu futuro, que compreendi que só se deve fazer aquilo em que se acredita apaixonadamente porque é aí que se é bom.

W. When was the first time that you travelled abroad and where did you go? My first trip abroad was when I was 17 and flew to New York - the great adventure, the American dream. Everything was possible. We felt beautiful and invincible. Many of my friends went to live there and returned different people. It was in this city that I discovered what I wanted to do in the future, when I realized that we should only do what we passionately believe in, as this is what we will be good at.

What are your favourite holiday destinations? P.B. I don’t have a favourite destination, it depends on the season and my mood, but they all have one thing in common. Beach, sunshine, and tranquillity and that’s why I spend so much time in Comporta. I like intimacy, peace and authenticity. W.

Do you have any particular habits or rituals that you follow when you first get to a hotel room? Is there anything you do to make yourself feel at home or anything you wouldn’t do in your own home? P.B. Hotels have become true luxuries. I am very careful when it comes to choosing a hotel, its décor, cuisine and service should be a source of inspiration. I always choose a room with a view and the first thing I do when I get there is to run in and open the window, to discover and feel. W.

Quais são os seus destinos de férias preferidos? P.B. Não tenho um destino favorito, depende da estação do ano, do meu estado de espírito, mas todos têm uma coisa em comum: a praia, o sol, a calma. É por isso que passo muito tempo na Comporta. Gosto de intimidade, calma e autenticidade. Tem alguns hábitos ou rituais particulares que segue quando chega a um quarto de hotel? Há algo que faça para se sentir em casa ou algo que não faria na sua própria casa? P.B. Os hotéis tornaram-se verdadeiros luxos. Sou muito cuidadoso na escolha de hotel, que deve ser uma fonte de inspiração pela sua decoração, a sua cozinha, o seu serviço... Escolho sempre um quarto com uma vista desafogada e o meu primeiro gesto é correr e abrir a janela para descobrir e sentir. W.

Em que parte do planeta se sente mais em casa? P.B. É uma questão difícil porque, por vezes, preciso de calma e serenidade e amo profundamente a minha casa na Comporta, mas também preciso do som e de ver como o mundo muda a história duma cidade — e isso é sem dúvida Paris. Qual foi o lugar onde se sentiu mais feliz? P.B. O lugar onde vi pessoas felizes que gostam de festejar e desfrutar da vida— Nova Iorque nos anos 2000. Os lugares que me surpreenderam e me enriqueceram com a sua cultura e arte e onde aprendi muito, foram o Laos e o Sri Lanka. W.

Where on this planet do you feel most at home? P.B. That’s a tough question because at times I need peace and serenity and I am deeply in love with my home in Comporta, but I also need to hear and see how the world can change a city’s history and that I undoubtedly find in Paris. W.

Where was the place that you felt happiest? P.B. Where I saw happy people who like to party and enjoy life - New York in the 2000’s. Other places that surprised and enriched me with their culture and art and where I learned a lot, were Laos and Sri Lanka. W.

How does travelling affect your search for inspiration and the creative process? P.B. In order to create, I need to be inspired by what I live, see, read and hear. Then, to transcribe the ideas, I need them to mature in my mind. And finally, in quiet silence, I let my creativity go. My favourite place to finalize my creations is at home in Comporta. W.

Como é que viajar afecta a sua busca de inspiração e processo criativo? P.B. Para a minha criação, preciso naturalmente da inspiração do que vivo, vejo, leio e ouço. Depois, para a transcrever, preciso que amadureça na minha cabeça. E finalmente, no silêncio, sem barulho, deixo-a livre para a minha criação fluir. O meu lugar preferido para finalizar a minha criação é a minha casa na Comporta. Onde iria para se isolar do resto do mundo? P.B. Portugal. Mistura várias culturas e um passado rico, com habitantes felizes e orgulhosos do seu país. É multifacetado, tem paisagens incríveis em todas as regiões. Ao explorar o país, surpreendemo-nos muitas vezes, encontrando reflexos do mundo inteiro. W.

Viajar não é necessariamente ir a algum lado, pode ser, muito simplesmente, fazer uma pausa na nossa rotina diária. Nestes tempos de pandemia, em que o mundo inteiro tem de parar, como é que foge à sua rotina diária? P.B. É vital durante este período difícil respeitar as regras sanitárias que limitam ou mesmo proíbem qualquer deslocação. Durante este período, vou para casa, para a Comporta, que me acalma e é a minha fonte de criatividade. Respeito os outros e não pretendo colocar-me em perigo por eles. É um período, vamos respeitar as regras. Não é insignificante e provavelmente irá mudar os nossos hábitos, mas esperemos que seja apenas por um período limitado. W.

Sabemos que as fragrâncias podem desencadear emoções, acha que há uma que pode desencadear esperança? P.B. Esta minha primeira fragrância, Alma, foi pensada durante muito tempo; só queria que reflectisse todo o imaginário da Comporta. Concebi-a como um agradecimento à Comporta, porque me encontrei neste lugar. Acredito que desencadeia calma, paz, esperança. Agora, quero concentrar-me no meu campo de especialização (fui um dos primeiros médicos cosmetologistas em França): os cuidados com a pele.

Where would you go to isolate yourself from the rest of the world? P.B. Portugal. It combines various cultures and a rich past, with happy inhabitants who are proud of their homeland. It is multifaceted, with incredible landscapes in all of its regions. Exploring Portugal is full of surprises, revealing influences from all over the world. W.

Travelling isn’t necessarily going somewhere, it may be, quite simply, taking a break from our daily routine. In these times of pandemic, when the whole world has to come to a standstill, how do you escape from your daily routine? P.B. During these difficult times, it is vital to respect health regulations that limit or even prohibit any travelling. Therefore I stay at my home in Comporta, which calms me down and is my source of creativity. I respect others and do not intend to put myself at risk for anybody else. Let’s respect the rules, these times are not without consequences and will likely change our habits, but hopefully just for a limited amount of time. W.

We know that fragrances can trigger emotions, do you think there is one that can trigger hope? P.B. My first fragrance, Alma, was carefully thought-through for a very long time, I wanted it to reflect all the imagery of Comporta. I created it as a thank you to Comporta because it is here that I have found myself. I believe it triggers calm, peace and hope. Now I want to focus on my field of expertise (I was one of the first cosmetologists in France): skin care.

“Agora, África fica mais perto”, diziam eles às suas mulheres.

Foi em 1955 que dois irmãos, José e Manuel Espírito Santo, se reencontraram em Portugal, por ocasião do funeral do seu terceiro irmão, Ricardo. Durante o funeral, as famílias reuniram-se e passaram algum tempo juntas. Foi como se uma paixão renascesse, principalmente, para José e Manuel, que nesse mesmo ano resolveram comprar a Herdade da Comporta. Ao longo dos 33 anos que se seguiram, pouco se ouvia falar da Comporta… sabia-se que era uma herdade virada para a agricultura, pesca e pouco mais. “Agora, África fica mais perto”, diziam eles às suas mulheres. A propriedade era composta por 3 aldeias: Carrasqueira, Carvalhal e Comporta, onde fica a casa da família, a que chamavam o prédio, porque era a única casa na região que tinha um primeiro andar. Passados esses 33 anos, precisamente a 8 do 8 de 88, em pleno “auge” do verão Algarvio, o filho de Manuel, o icónico e visionário Pedro Espírito Santos e seus sobrinhos, Luís e Martim Saldanha, netos de José, decidiram fugir do Algarve e regressar à Comporta, a herdade onde passaram muitas temporadas em criança, no prédio onde se juntava toda a família, e onde o Pedro, aos 18 anos, desenhou o seu primeiro projecto, a escola da aldeia da Comporta.Tio e sobrinhos, neste regresso, aventuraram-se a ir para lá do prédio, para lá da aldeia da Comporta. Decidiram ir acampar para uma casinha típica que a mãe de Luís tinha adquirido na Lagoa do Carvalhal. A casinha era uma antiga barbearia no meio do nada, ou antes, no meio de tudo! Natureza, mar, dunas, arrozais, pinhais, estradas de terra, e areia... era tudo o que a rodeava. Luís recorda-se que, antes de irem para lá, foram ao supermercado Pão de Açúcar, que havia em Cascais, para comprar o fogareiro, colchões e tudo o que é básico. A barbearia estava tal e qual, e então, varreram os cabelos, meteram os colchões, o fogareiro a gás e o básico. Era tudo o que precisavam ali. Era suposto ficararem dois dias e acabaram por ficar duas semanas! Foi assim que resolveram passar ali muitas férias e fins-de-semana. Nessas primeiras duas semanas, tentaram procurar uma casa para os 3, mas apaixonaram-se por 3 sítios diferentes!

It was in 1955 that two brothers, José and Manuel Espírito Santo, were reunited in Portugal, at the funeral of their third brother, Ricardo. It was at the funeral, when the families came together, that a passion was reignited, especially for José and Manuel. Shortly after, they decided to buy the Herdade da Comporta. At that time, and for many years that followed, very little was known about Comporta except that it was a farming and fishing estate on the Alentejo coast. “Africa is closer than ever now,” they would say to their wives. The property consisted of 3 picturesque villages, Carrasqueira, Carvalhal and Comporta, where the family home is located, which they used to call “the building”, because it was the only house in the region that had 2 floors. 33 years later, on the 8 of the 8 of 88, to be precise, in the height of the Algarve summer, Manuel’s son, the iconic and visionary, Pedro Espírito Santo and his nephews, Luís and Martim Saldanha, José’s grandchildren, decided to flee from the Algarve and return to Comporta. It was there that they had spent many holidays when they were children in “the building” where the whole family would come together, and where Pedro, at the age 18, designed his first project, the village school of Comporta. When they returned to Comporta this time, Pedro and his nephews decided to venture out beyond the building and the village of Comporta. They ended up camping next to a small, typical house that Luís’ mother had acquired in Lagoa do Carvalhal. What they found, was a former barber shop in the middle of nowhere or rather, in the middle of everything! They were surrounded by stunning nature, from the sea and the sand dunes, to the rice paddies and pine forests that were only accessible along quiet, dirt roads… Luis remembers all the excitement building up to this adventure, stocking up beforehand at a big supermarket in Cascais, on basics and camping gear including a gas stove and mats to sleep on. The barber shop was just as it had always been, so they swept away the hair on the floor, laid down their mats and lit the gas stove. This and the basic food supplies was all they needed there. They were only meant to stay for two days and ended up staying two weeks! This was when they decided they wanted spend many more holidays and weekends there. During those 2 weeks, they searched for a house for the 3 of them but fell in love with 3 different places!

Um lugar era nos Brejos, no meio do pinhal, a que chamaram Vale Perdido, outro com vista para o mar na Lagoa do Pêgo e outro no Poçanco, numa duna junto ao estuário do sado. Em cada um deles, existiam pequenas construções em ruínas. Negociaram os 3 sítios e começaram por restaurar as 3 casinhas da lagoa. Pedro falava sempre em restauro ou upgrade, evitava falar em fazer obras, argumentando que é muito fácil fazer, o difícil é saber parar. E assim passaram 10 anos num constante upgrade, tão subtil como se as melhorias estivessem a ser camufladas! As estradas de areia permaneciam gratas aos locais pois só eram transitáveis de jipe. Não havia estradas asfaltadas, nem cercas, nem portas fechadas! Havia o luar e o silêncio das noites estreladas a entrar pelas portas abertas deixadas... Quem era convidado por eles a ir à Comporta sentia que estava a chegar a uma espécie de África no Alentejo, às casas da paz, escondidas entre caminhos de areia e dunas, por sítios onde só eles sabiam chegar. Faziam questão de manter todas as características das casas que existiam ou tinham existido na zona, o que transmitia um espírito de harmonia, união e entendimento mútuo. Decoravam as suas casas com peças antigas que reciclavam. Muitas vezes adquiriam-nas nos bazares de antiguidades e velharias locais, ou naquele que também acabou por se tornar um bom amigo, o Júlio. Encontravam nas redondezas tudo o que precisavam e gostavam, faziam tudo para que a economia local jamais desaparecesse. O Sr. Vítor, o Júlio, o Sr. do Tomate, a Jacinta, a filha, o neto e a Sílvia do Café, etc..., sempre foram visitas assíduas das suas casas, sentavam-se à mesa e sentiam-se todos como em casa... qualquer que fosse a casa, de uns e outros, em que entrassem. Todos os habitantes os adoravam, de tal forma que os batizaram de “locais”, não só a eles, como também a todos os seus convidados. Todos eram locais, todos se sentiam iguais, sem distinções, nem pretensões! Pedro Espírito Santo e os seus sobrinhos sabiam que, da mesma forma que eles tinham sido conquistados por aquele lugar e por aquela forma de viver, muitas outras pessoas também o poderiam vir a querer e que, mais tarde ou mais cedo, a Comporta iria crescer.

A spot in Brejos, in the middle of a pine forest, which they called Vale Perdido (Lost Valley), another with a view of the sea in Lagoa do Pêgo and a third in Poçanco on a dune next to the Sado estuary. Each property had small houses in ruins. They negotiated and bought the 3 sites and started the restoration work of the small houses at the lagoon property. Pedro always talked about restoration or upgrade, never construction works which he argued were very easy to do but difficult to know when to stop! 10 years of constant upgrade followed, so subtle that it was as if the improvements were being camouflaged! The sandy dirt tracks remained, so access to the sites was only possible by jeep. There were no paved roads, nor fences or closed doors! There was moonlight and all the silence of the starry nights flooding in through the open doors. Those who they invited to visit them in Comporta felt like they were reaching a kind of Africa in the Alentejo with its peaceful cabins, hidden between the sandy paths and dunes, that only they knew how to reach. They insisted on preserving all the original characteristics of these typical “cabanas” as well as many others spread across the area, transmitting a spirit of harmony, unity and mutual understanding. They decorated their houses using old items that they recycled. They often bought local antiques at junk bazaars, or from Júlio, who became a good friend. They could buy everything they needed and liked nearby, preserving and privileging the local economy to ensure it would never disappear. Vitor, Júlio, the tomatoes man, Jacinta, his daughter and grandson, Sílvia from the café, among so many others, regularly visited them. They all sat at the same table and felt totally at home. The local inhabitants adored them, so much so that they called them and their guests “locals”. They were all locals, and all felt the same, without any distinction nor pretense! Pedro Espírito Santo and his nephews knew that many others would also be won over by Comporta and its lifestyle, so its growth was inevitable.

Pedro tinha uma visão bem clara para o desenvolvimento da Herdade da Comporta. Desdobrou-se em desenhos urbanísticos e projetos de arquitetura que respeitavam a evolução em harmonia daquele paraíso. Ele queria manter tudo o mais possível original, respeitando o estilo típico, as casinhas brancas e azul, os telhados de colmo, sem grandes construções, segundo o livro da arquitetura Portuguesa, publicado na feira mundial de 1940... assegurando baixa densidade de aglomerados, de casas, para que não houvesse necessidade de cercas... Para alem das típicas cabanas, a única construção diferenciada seria inspirada no forte português, com casinhas brancas e seus terraços.

Pedro, however, had a very clear vision for the development of the Comporta Estate. It unfolded in urban designs and architectural projects that respected the spectacular natural assets of this paradise and its harmonious evolution. He wanted to keep everything as similar as possible to the original, respecting the typical style of the blue and white cabins with thatched roofs, according to the book of Portuguese architecture published at the 1940 world fair, ensuring low-density so there would be no need for fences. Apart from the typical cabanas, the only other type of construction to be permitted would be inspired by the Portuguese fort with small white houses and large terraces.

Pedro jamais pensou em rotundas, condomínios, gradeamentos, casas muito diferentes umas das outras, grandes dimensões... nem noutras ideias provenientes da globalização... Acreditava num minimalismo futurista, natural, harmonioso e pacífico, longe de excessos desnecessários. Via elegância na simplicidade e na autenticidade. Com a Expo 98, a uma escala diferente de hoje, as visitas e o interesse pela Comporta foi aumentando gradualmente. Perante tantas pressões e propostas de muitos interessados, a Atlantic, entidade responsável pela exploração da herdade da Comporta, foi agindo sem tempo para dar a devida atenção às sugestões e projectos desenhados pelo já Arq. Pedro Espírito Santo. No entanto, muitos clientes e amigos que o admiravam e que lhe encomendaram diversos projectos, ficaram fascinados e rendidos pelo seu bom gosto, cultura e criatividade, e assim, deixou a sua marca em várias casas na Comporta. Hoje, apesar das construções de diferentes proporções, rotundas, cercas e aglomerações, ainda existem muitas áreas protegidas. A Comporta ainda tem muito espaço livre para respirar e para se sentir o espírito do Pedro e as marcas daquele sonho tido com os sobrinhos em 1988... Nos nossos dias, não restam dúvidas de que eles foram pioneiros e que o Pedro nos deixou um belo e duradouro legado, um marco para as gerações futuras. Obrigado, Pedro.

Pedro never imagined roundabouts, condominiums, railings, large houses of different proportions and styles nor any other ideas that stemmed from globalization. He believed in futuristic, natural, harmonious and peaceful minimalism, free of unnecessary excesses, he saw elegance in simplicity and authenticity. With the Expo 98 World Trade Fair, which placed Lisbon under the spotlight, visits to, and interest in, Comporta gradually began to rise. Faced with so much pressure and so many proposals from numerous interested parties, Atlantic, the company responsible for managing the Comporta Estate, started to act without taking heed to the recommendations and projects designed by the then Architect Pedro Espírito Santo. However, many clients and friends who admired Pedro, commissioned him to work on various projects and were fascinated and captivated by his impeccable taste, culture and creativity evident in his several projects in Comporta. Today, despite the construction of different proportions, roundabouts, fences and agglomerations, there are still many protected areas. Comporta still offers plenty space to live and breathe Pedro’s spirit and the influence of the dream he and his nephews had in 1988... Nowadays, there is no doubt that they were pioneers and that Pedro left behind a beautiful, lasting legacy in Comporta. Thank you, Pedro.

Mark Manson, no seu livro “Está tudo F**dido”, escreveu: “A nossa psique precisa de esperança para sobreviver, como um peixe precisa de água. Se não acreditarmos que existe alguma esperança de que o futuro será melhor, que a nossa vida vai melhorar, morremos espiritualmente”. Esperança é a força do espírito pela conquista da felicidade, pela posse do bem e pela fuga ao mal. Esperança é esperar com confiança, pela cura, pela herança, pela mudança, pela revelação, pela vitória. É a espera pelo encontro com alguém ou por nos encontrarmos a nós próprios. É uma expectativa fervorosa composta quer pelo que semeamos, quer por uma graça divina que sentimos ser naturalmente merecida. Um bom exemplo disso, é uma grávida que espera o encontro com o seu filho. Ela faz uma parte do trabalho e algo mágico, divino e natural faz acontecer toda a outra parte do processo. Como disse o Papa Francisco: “É a paciência de saber que nós semeamos, mas é Deus que faz crescer”. Esperança é o caminho rumo a uma meta segura... Com tanto desespero, onde anda a Esperança? Anda com quem semeia, anda com quem tem metas, com quem acredita, com quem é responsável, com quem sonha, imagina, espera... Anda com quem se importa, com quem ama... A esperança faz-nos caminhar rumo à herança, rumo ao “prémio”, rumo à felicidade que que- remos alcançar. E essa herança, como explicou o Papa Francisco, “é o que buscamos no nosso caminho, o que receberemos no final... Mas é preciso buscá-la todos os dias e o que nos leva avante no caminho da nossa identidade rumo à herança é justamente essa esperança”.

INTRODUCTION

In his book, “Everything is F*cked”, Mark Manson wrote: “Our psyche needs hope to survive, the way fish needs water. … If we don’t believe there’s any hope that the future will be better than the present, that our life will improve in some way, we die spiritually”... Hope is the spirit working to achieve happiness, to possess goodness and escape from evil. Hope is to wait confidently for healing, inheritance, change, revelation and victory... It is waiting to meet someone or to find ourselves. It’s a fervent expectation based on what we sow and divine grace, which we feel is naturally deserved. A good example of this is a pregnant woman who is waiting to meet her new-born baby. She does part of the work and something magical, divine and natural makes the rest of the process happen. As Pope Francis said: “Hope needs patience, the patience of knowing that we sow, but it is God who gives growth”. Hope is the journey towards a safe outcome... With so much despair, where is hope? Hope is with those who sow, have objectives, believe, are responsible, with those who dream, imagine and wait... It is with those who care and love... Hope makes us head towards the inheritance, the “prize”, the happiness we seek. And this inheritance, as Pope Francis explained, “is that which we seek on our journey, that which we will receive in the end... But we need to seek it each day; and it is precisely hope which carries us forward in the journey toward that inheritance”.

Rational faith, faith in one’s self. I came to realize that I only have one life and I have to make the most of it. It’s not about being religious but about being objective and true to oneself. About the times we are going through… I have to say that 2020 has actually been one of the best years of my life. It took me a while to accept that, but it is what actually happened. I swap the word hope for faith, objective and intelligent faith, together with sincere work, doing what I enjoy. That’s what gives me the confidence to build a prosperous future. This was confirmed to me in 2020.

Cada vez mais acredito na força das minorias, nas pequenas comunidades, em pessoas comuns, desligadas de qualquer poder, que se organizam para resolver problemas e praticar boas acções. Tenho esperança que elas, sim, vão fazer por melhorar o mundo. Observo os Jovens que me rodeiam e vejo como têm uma consciência totalmente diferente daquela que tínhamos naquela idade. Vejo como estão atentos às questões do ambiente e ao seu bem-estar físico e espiritual. Preocupamse com a qualidade e a origem dos alimentos que consomem, muitos interessam-se por culinária, poucos deles fumam, praticam meditação, yoga e, em geral, são mais conscientes e pacíficos. Esta nova geração também me ajuda a ter esperança no futuro. Mas, acima de tudo, tenho esperança que estes tempos atribulados possam contribuir para uma mudança de mentalidade, que venha alterar uma forma de pensar, ainda primitiva, egocêntrica e cruel. Tenho esperança que, mesmo que tudo fique pior, porque poderá ficar, que tal sirva para depois ficar bem melhor, levando à evoluçâo da humanidade e, acima de tudo, ao fim da violência.

I increasingly believe in the strength of minorities, in small communities, selfless everyday normal people who dedicate themselves to solving problems and making the world a better place. I also have faith in the younger generation. I see how much more aware they are about the environment and their physical and spiritual well-being.They are concerned with the quality of the food they eat and its origin, hardly any of them smoke and they meditate, practice Yoga and are generally more mindful and peaceful. This generation also gives me hope for the future. However, most of all I hope for a change in mentalities, that these troublesome times we are going through will change our primitive, barbaric and selfish ways of thinking. Even if things get worse now, may this contribute positively to the evolution of humankind and above all, an end to violence.

A música é uma forma de arte muito generosa porque ajuda-nos a sentirmo-nos mais felizes. Às vezes, traz-nos muita alegria voltar a ouvir uma música que marcou um bom momento da nossa juventude, ou que foi importante nas nossas vidas. Para além de evocar a nossa memória, tem o imenso poder de nos transportar momentaneamente para outro tempo e lugar, revisitando sentimentos e emoções associados a essas memórias, de quando aquela música nos encantou. Quando ouvimos uma música, que nos é agradável, apercebemo-nos que os sons se combinam de tal forma que sentimos prazer, com a sua vibração ritmada que ressoa no nosso espírito e provoca no nosso corpo uma energia que nos leva a fazer uns movimentos estranhos, que nem sabíamos que conseguiríamos fazer. A inspiração que a música traz às nossas vidas, é como um catalisador da energia criativa que acorda em nós, dando-nos energia, prazer e inspiração, fazendo-nos sentir bem, levando-nos a sonhar, a imaginar e a ter esperança para continuar… Não admira que os músicos sejam os artistas mais adorados do planeta. Talvez os músicos e os cozinheiros sejam os responsáveis pelos maiores prazeres da vida humana.

Music is a very generous art form as it helps us feel happier. Sometimes it brings us joy to hear a song that marked a great moment when we were young, or one that was important at some point in our lives. Not only does it bring back memories, music has the power to momentarily transport us to another time and place, revisiting feelings and emotions associated to a song that captivated us. When we hear a song we love, we realize that the sounds come together creating a very pleasurable rhythmic vibration that resonates in our spirit and energizes and leads us to do some very strange movements that we had no idea we were capable of doing. Music touches, awakens and uplifts our spirit, affecting our emotions and feelings, giving us energy to dance or continue living our lives with joy and hope. Older than writing, music remains one of the greatest forms of art and human expression. “Music is the art of manifesting the affections of the soul, through sound and silence” (Bona).Through it, an idea, a feeling, a desire can be expressed. It is a beautiful and powerful means of communication, with an intention and message coming from the being and senses of the author, to touch the spirit, heart and emotion of the listener. Foi Pascal quem escreveu que “as mãos sustêm a alma”. Hoje precisamos de mãos – mãos religiosas e laicas – que sustenham a alma do mundo. E que mostrem que a redescoberta do poder da esperança é a primeira oração global do século XXI. Relançar a espera: o nosso lugar em tempos de inquietação. Nós sofremos por estar confinados. É uma coisa que não corresponde à nossa natureza, à nossa vocação, às nossas escolhas, às nossas necessidades. Porém, a situação atual também representa uma oportunidade para todos. E, nesse sentido, vem-me ao pensamento aquele princípio que o Papa Francisco repete muitas vezes, e que talvez seja o momento certo para redescobrirmos: “O tempo é superior ao espaço”. Habitualmente, somos seres do espaço. Ocupamos, colonizamos; “isto é nosso, “isto é meu”; cremos que isto é definitivo, vivemos em rotinas mais ou menos férreas e cegas – mesmo quando não damos por isso – e achamos que tudo tem de ser assim e que o mundo tem a forma que nós lhe demos, não podendo ser de outra forma. Quando consideramos que o tempo é superior ao espaço, percebemos que as formas do espaço são relativas e que o tempo é fluido, flexível, móvel¸ enquanto o espaço tende a cristalizar. Tende, muitas vezes até, a bloquear. Ora um momento como este é também uma grande oportunidade para redescobrir que a vida não começa e acaba aqui. Que há o tempo. E que este não é apenas o cronómetro que me faz correr, mas é pensar de onde venho e para onde vou. O tempo é albergar, é hospedar na nossa vida uma respiração que é maior do que nós. Saber que há um passado muito maior do que nós, um presente, que é o nosso, e um futuro. E que nós vivemos neste trânsito permanente. SPOTLIGHT: HOPE

It was Pascal who wrote that “hands support the soul”. Today we need hands – religious and secular hands – that support the soul of the world and show us that rediscovering the power of hope is the fundamental global prayer of the 21st century. Relaunch the wait: our place in times of unrest. We suffer from being confined. It is something that is not part of human nature, vocation, choices or needs. However, the current situation also presents us all with an opportunity. In this sense, one principle that comes to mind is one often repeated by Pope Francis and perhaps now is the time to rediscover it: “Time is superior to space”. We are, in general, creatures of space. We occupy, we colonize; “This is ours”, “this is mine”; we believe this is definitive, we live in more or less inflexible and blind routines – even if we are not aware of it – and we believe everything has to be this way, that the world is shaped by us and cannot be any other way. When we consider that time is superior to space, we realize that forms of space are relative and that time is fluid, flexible and mobile, while space tends to crystallize. Often, it even tends to block us. Therefore, times like these also present a huge opportunity to rediscover that life does not begin and end here. There is time, this is not just a stopwatch making me run. It is time to think about where I come from and where I am going. It is time to accommodate, to host a breath that is greater than we are in our life. To understand that there is a much greater past than us, a present which is ours and a future. To realize that we live in permanent transit. We cannot live our life obsessed by the present that we do or do not have. We need to look to the future. A future filled with hope.

Não podemos viver obsidiados, simplesmente, pelo presente que temos ou não temos. Precisamos de olhar para o futuro. E esperar do futuro. Este é também o tempo de relançar a espera e, nesse sentido, a esperança. Há uma expectativa, no coração da nossa própria existência, de que o momento imediato e este espaço a que estou confinado – se me dou conta e não me dou conta, como na rotina anterior que tinha – são pouco para traduzir aquilo que somos. É claro que há uma certa inocência, há uma certa ingenuidade quando pensamos que existe só o presente. Lembro-me de uma história de Sophia em que uns índios, de uma tribo amazona, quando eram presos morriam, definhavam, porque só tinham presente. Penso que temos mais do que presente, e este também é o momento para redescobrir.

This is also the time to relaunch the wait and, in that sense, hope. There is an expectation, at the heart of our own existence, that the immediate moment and this space to which I am confined – whether I realize it or not, as was the case in my previous routine – are not enough to reflect who we really are. It is clear that there is a certain innocence and naivety in believing that the present is all that there is. I remember a story by Sophia, in which some Indians from an Amazonian tribe, who were imprisoned, withered, and died, because they only had the present. I believe we have more than just the present and that this is also a time for rediscovery. Rediscovering that there is a future, that we must all commit to it, envision it and that this is perhaps a time of great germination, of great gestation.

Para redescobrir que há um futuro, que temos de nos empenhar nele, todos, que temos de o perspetivar; e que este é um tempo talvez de grande germinação, de grande gestação. Aliás, vê-se por tantas iniciativas que estão a acontecer: coisas novas, uma energia de vida, uma afirmação de esperança que se traduz em tantas partilhas, tantas condivisões. Exatamente porque nós não somos apenas seres de presente. Nós não temos apenas âncoras, também temos asas. José Tolentino Mendonça Poeta, sacerdote e professor José Tolentino Mendonça nasceu em Machico, na ilha da Madeira em 1965, passou por uma infância em Angola, no Lobito, e pelo amadurecimento e estudos universitários em Ciências Bíblicas em Roma, depois de ter sido ordenado padre em 1990. Desde junho de 2018, José Tolentino Mendonça vive no Vaticano e é Arquivista e Bibliotecário da Santa Romana Igreja, onde é responsável pela Biblioteca Apostólica e pelo Arquivo Secreto do Vaticano. Em 2019 foi elevado a Cardeal pelo Papa Francisco. Para José Tolentino Mendonça “a poesia é a arte de resistir ao seu tempo” Os seus livros têm sido distinguidos com vários prémios, entre eles Prémio Cidade de Lisboa de Poesia (1998), o Prémio Pen Club de Ensaio (2005), o italiano Res Magnae para obras ensaísticas (2015), o Grande Prémio de Poesia Teixeira de Pascoaes APE (2016), o Grande Prémio APE de Crónica (2016) e o prestigiado Prémio Capri-San Michele (2017). Tem publicado a sua poesia na Assírio & Alvim e, desde 2017, a sua obra ensaística na Quetzal Editores.

Precisely because we are not just present beings. We don’t just have anchors, we also have wings. Unidos ao Todo que nos sustenta e anima, enquanto humanos, com sua Energia... E essa Força, essa Energia, flui em Tudo, flui em todos... Sempre... Em todos os seres que habitam este Planeta, em todos os seres que existem universo fora, em todos os planetas, sóis, estrelas, em todos os seres vivos... eternamente... em todos, irradia essa energia... Fluindo, sempre fluindo... em todos... em tudo... mantendo um são equilíbrio, sustentando todos ... sustentando tudo... ...o que vive, onde seja, como seja, o que quer que seja... We all end, as human beings All of us. But we continue, as spiritual beings… Within us we take the mark of the life lived and we continue throughout eternity… We continue... United to the Whole that sustains and animates us, as humans, with its Energy... And that Force, that Energy, Flows in Everything, flows in All… Always… In all beings inhabiting this Planet, in all beings existing throughout the universe, in all planets, suns, stars, in all living beings ... eternally... in all, this energy radiates... Flowing, always flowing ... in all... in everything... maintaining a healthy balance, sustaining all... sustaining everything ... ...that lives, wherever, however, whatever it is ... Always within us, always present, always ready to be felt and lived sensitively, that Energy, that Essence ... although we rarely are with it... Always with us, always present, Animating all ... Animating everything ... The Whole ... and its Energy ... It is this Whole the sense of unity. A esperança é o adiar daquilo que podemos fazer agora. Porque o agora é sempre a reconstrução, a resolução, a resiliência, o esforço perene. Reconstruir, porque o que acaba ou se transforma nunca voltará à forma anterior, mas a evolução é isso mesmo; criar a renovação contínua de factos, de coisas e de mentalidades. Novas construções, acompanham novas formas mentais de criar o presente. A resolução requer a capacidade de erguer soluções a partir da ruína. A resiliência combate o desânimo, leva à busca da força interior, activa a inteligência, objectivando rumos. O esforço é o impulso contínuo de olhar em frente, de novos horizontes que conduzam a uma meta realista e a um sentido. Sou apologista de um contínuo superamento consciente. Não restam dúvidas de que quem nos superou em força de vida foi este resistente vírus, o Covid-19, que nos obriga ao alerta, lembrando-nos que a vida é uma constante batalha pelo equilíbrio e bem-estar. Quanto mais o tempo passa, mais damos conta que houve um antes e o agora, onde este presente nos é desconhecido. Pode haver, no entanto, da parte da maioria das pessoas resistência à mudança, quer interna, quer externa, mas a realidade foi sendo desenhada, pouco a pouco, neste combate pela sobrevivência.

SPOTLIGHT: HOPE

Hope is to put off what we can do today because today is all about reconstruction, resolution, resilience and perennial effort. Reconstruction because what comes to an end or is transformed will never return to its previous form and evolution is precisely that; the constant renewal of facts, things and mentalities. Reconstruction goes hand in hand with new mindsets that create the present. Resolution requires the ability to build solutions out of ruin. Resilience fights discouragement, leads to a search for inner strength and activates intelligence, providing direction. Effort is the continuous drive to look ahead, at new horizons that lead to a realistic goal and make sense. I am an advocate of continuously and consciously overcoming obstacles. There is no doubt whatsoever that the resistant Covid-19 virus has surpassed us in life force, forcing us to become alert, reminding us that life is a constant struggle for balance and well-being. The more time goes by, the more we realize that there was a then and a now, and that the present is unknown to us. However, whilst most people may resist internal and external change, reality has gradually been redesigned in this struggle for survival.

De facto, não foram as pessoas que mudaram interiormente, pois isso é um processo demorado e por vezes resistente, mas a própria vida em si mesmo, arrastando-nos a mudanças impostas pelas circunstâncias, que vamos encontrando no dia-a-dia. Quando passamos por uma rua e vemos as lojas quase todas fechadas por falência, maior número de pessoas a pedir esmolas, museus, restaurante e outros espaços desertos etc., vemos como o ambiente exuberante que outrora vivíamos, não existe mais. Necessitamos de nova organização. Assim, superar e encontrar novas formas de viver, eis o desafio da humanidade nesta imprevisibilidade do presente. Se não aceitarmos a mudança, que encaramos sempre como uma contrariedade, e resistindo, sofreremos ainda mais e não daremos oportunidades, nem valorizaremos os novos momentos do agora. Gostamos da estabilidade, da arrumação tanto mental e emocional, como material, mas a impermanência derruba todas as nossas defesas e condições de acomodação. É esta ausência de estabilidade que fará a humanidade evoluir, pondo à prova a capacidade mental de sair do marasmo cognitivo da acomodação através da inteligência e pela vontade do superamento, pois é desta forma que o cérebro humano evolui para maior consciência de si. Sim, a esperança dá-nos alento para o amanhã, mas antes temos o agora, e esse tem de ser vivido com grande responsabilidade para que não adiemos outra vez para amanhã, com a benesse da esperança, aquilo que deve ser feito no momento presente.

In fact, it was not people who changed internally, as this is a long and sometimes resistant process, but life itself, dragging us into changes imposed upon us by the circumstances we are confronted with on a daily basis, as we walk down streets where practically all the shops have gone bankrupt and closed down, where there are an increasing number of people begging and where museums, restaurants and other public spaces are deserted. The vibrant environment that we once knew, no longer exists. We need a new organization. Therefore, amidst all the unpredictability of the present, overcoming and finding new ways of living is humanity’s greatest challenge. If we do not accept change, which we always face with contrariness and resistance, we will suffer even more, failing to appreciate and give an opportunity to the current times. We like stability, mental, emotional and material orderliness but impermanence breaks down our defences and complacency. It is this lack of stability that will make humanity evolve, testing our mental capacity to get out of the cognitive slump of complacency using our intelligence and determination to overcome challenges. This is how the human brain evolves towards a greater awareness of itself. Yes, hope does give us strength for the future but first we have to confront the present responsibly so that we no longer put off until tomorrow, with the benefits of hope, what must be done today.

The contemporary Pandora's box: The vengeance of the Gods and the hope of human beings

Nasrudin estava fazendo a sua primeira viagem de navio. Ele estava muito enjoado, sentindo-se tão mal que achava que ia morrer. Quando ele falou o que estava sentindo a um marinheiro, este tentou confortá-lo dizendo: - Não fique tão desanimado Senhor! Eu nunca vi ninguém morrer de enjoo! - Não me diga isso! — gemeu Nasrudin — a esperança de morrer foi a única coisa que me manteve vivo até agora! Ao longo da história da humanidade, sempre que os seres humanos ultrapassaram os seus limites éticos, os Deuses providenciaram uma desgraça para a tomada de consciência, que urge mudar o modus vivendi e operandi das pessoas, a bem da naturezahumana e da natureza-mãe. Destarte começa esta reflexão com um conto Sufi de Nasrudin sobre a peste: “A Peste a caminho de Bagdad encontrou Nasrudin. Este perguntou: - Aonde vais? A Peste respondeu-lhe: - A Bagdad, matar dez mil pessoas. Tempos depois, a Peste voltou a encontrar-se com Nasrudin. Nasrudin muito zangado, disse-lhe: - Mentiste-me. Disseste que matarias dez mil pessoas e mataste cem mil. E a Peste respondeu-lhe: - Eu não menti, matei dez mil. O resto morreu de medo.” Em 1899, na cidade do Porto, Ricardo Jorge, teve a coragem de impor a quarentena durante 4 meses, devido à peste bubónica também denominada a peste Levante (com 320 pessoas infetadas e 132 pessoas mortas) e ordenou o encerramento da cidade do Porto (em 1920 a ousadia de proibir a entrada da Coca-Cola), contra a vontade da classe política, que queria ganhar votos, assim como a dos comerciantes enfurecidos por perda SPOTLIGHT: HOPE

Throughout the history of mankind whenever human beings have exceeded their ethical limits, the Gods have provided a disaster to make mankind realize that there is an urgent need to change people’s modus vivendi and operandi, for the sake of both human nature and mother nature. I begin this reflection with a Sufi tale by Nasrudin about the plague: “The Plague was on its way to the city when it bumped into Nasrudin. -Where are you going so fast?” Asked the mullah. -To the city. -What are you up to? -I’ll take one thousand lives. Returning from the city, the Plague met Hodja again. He was angry: -You told me you would take one thousand but you took ten thousand lives. -No, said the Plague. I took one thousand. O médico bacteriologista, Luís Câmara Pestana, cometeu a imprudência de recolher fluidos biológicos sem luvas para identificar a doença e preveni-la, acabando por morrer da peste bubónica. Ricardo Jorge e Luís Câmara Pestana, foram dois profícuos e “luminosos” médicos que tiveram a bravura de enfrentar toda uma classe política, económica e os jornalistas da época. Entre os anos de 1346 e 1353, a humanidade conhece, pela primeira vez, uma das mais devastadoras pandemias, a Peste Negra ou a Morte Negra (esta peste foi transmitida por pulgas e ratos pretos). Esta pandemia foi, talvez, a mais chocante e dantesca na história da Europa, matando entre 75 a 200 milhões pessoas e alterando todo o sistema imunitário dos cidadãos europeus. Em 1918, surge a pandemia da gripe espanhola, provocado pelo vírus influenza, que vitimou entre 50 a 100 milhões de pessoas em todo o mundo, ou seja, 5% da população mundial.

Seria interessante uma análise mais fria e menos calculista sobre a vingança dos Deuses quando provocam as pandemias. Vejamos: No tempo da peste negra ou da morte negra tivemos a Inquisição Medieval (A Santa Inquisição), cujos juízes pertenciam ao clero da Ordem Dominicana, que, ao matarem as bruxas, abatiam também os seus gatos. E não havendo gatos, proliferavam os ratos. Em Portugal, em 1899, tivemos a peste bubónica, também transmitida por pulgas, surgindo num período de grandes mudanças. A luta de ideias liberais (os progressistas) contra os absolutistas para se implementar a Constituição. A gripe espanhola de 1918, a pneumónica, surge no período da Primeira Guerra Mundial, na qual Espanha se manteve neutra e a matriz judaico-cristã dizia que o apocalipse estava a chegar como uma punição divina pelos pecados pecaminosos e pelo materialismo. No dia 01 de dezembro de 2019, em Wuhan, abre-se a caixa de Pandora e o vírus Covid-19, de origem zoonótica, irá provocar uma pandemia mundial com 2.124.685 mortes e 98.954.912 de pessoas que foram infetadas, com repercussões imensuráveis a níveis psicológicos, económicos, financeiros, sociais, culturais, históricos, ecológicos, de saúde, da doença, etc. A classe política e os órgãos de comunicação social erroneamente resolveram fomentar uma verdadeira pandemia do medo. O mais interessante seria a análise do custo da “mão de obra” das pessoas (a maioria, provavelmente crianças e presos políticos) que trabalham de “sol a sol” para que os Europeus e os Americanos comprem os produtos “made in China” e como o capitalismo transladou todas as grandes indústrias para a China. A notícia mais interessante emanada dos bancos chineses: “Vamos limpar (lavar) o dinheiro, desinfetando-o com a luz ultravioleta e ficará 14 dias em quarentena”. Se lermos coronavírus, podemos ver que corona quer dizer Coroa. Ou seja, Coronário é o 7º Chakra, denominado o chakra da espiritualidade, o centro de comunicação com a sabedoria do Universo. A cor do chakra Coronário é violeta com nuances de dourado e branco, situado no ponto mais alto da cabeça, cuja simbologia é a flor de lótus com 1000 folhas, correspondendo à glândula Pineal (3º olho em sânscrito). Vivemos numa era do vazio, numa época egóica e num tempo narcísico, em que a espiritualidade se tornou “cor-de-rosa”, numa dimensão em que as pessoas vivem do social (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tinder, Linkedin, etc.) num autêntico vazio existencial, em que a alma e o espírito deixaram de ter valor e as pessoas passaram a adorar o corpo, pintando-o de tatuagens e piercings. Sem espiritualidade, não há a integração do físico ao emocional, do emocional ao mental e do mental à espiritualidade. O chakra coronário permite-nos a experiência transcendental da nossa união ao universo (na China limpa-se o dinheiro com a luz ultravioleta, a mesma cor do chakra coronário). A Terra sempre encontra mecanismos para se revitalizar e se reequilibrar desde a época dos dinossauros. Esta epidemia, do covid-19, obriga-nos a tomar consciência sobre a nossa trajetória vital e a consciencializar os nossos medos.

If we read coronavirus we can see that corona means Crown. That is, Coronary is the 7th Chakra, the spirituality chakra, the centre of communication with the wisdom of the Universe. The colour of the coronary chakra is violet with nuances of gold and white, located at the highest point of the head, symbolized by the lotus flower with 1000 leaves, corresponding to the Pineal gland (3rd eye in Sanskrit). We live in an era of emptiness, an egoic and narcissistic time, when spirituality has become “pink”, in a dimension where people spend their lives being social (on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tinder, Linkedin, etc.) in an authentic existential emptiness in which the soul and spirit no longer have any value and where people have started to worship their body by adorning it with tattoos and piercings. Without spirituality there is no integration of the physical with the emotional, the emotional with the mental and the mental with spirituality. The crown chakra allows us to experience our transcendental union with the universe (in China, money is cleaned using ultraviolet light, the same colour as the crown chakra). Mother Earth has always found mechanisms to revitalize and rebalance herself since the dinosaur age. A maioria das pessoas vive de aparências, de superficialidade e num vazio existencial, em padrões de comporta-mentos de prazeres fugazes, do consumismo desenfreado e da descartabilidade, do supérfluo, da cultura do fast-food ou do veganismo e do socialmente aceite através das redes sociais. As pessoas estão cada vez mais dissociadas, deprimidas, ansiosas e oferecendo os corpos para usos e abusos sexuais (seduziste-me e deixei-me seduzir) e alienandose em álcool e drogas. Olho para Portugal e para a globalização e observo uma fase de descalabro ético como se fosse o fim da ética (políticos e magistrados corruptos, violência doméstica, pedofilia, etc.), um tempo político, económico e religioso de desconstrução de padrões e valores sociais (sem a preocupação da defesa da tradição), para um moralismo balofo e de submissão a fake news. Vivemos numa cultura consumista e individualista, ou seja, vivemos sob a ditadura do Ter (o despertar para o egoísmo e o desapego nas relações interpessoais) como se Ter fosse o Ser, é no Ser que vive a nossa identidade e nos molda o caráter, para coabitar amorosamente, quer no social, quer no afetivo e emocional. O vazio existencial com que a maioria das pessoas sente e vivencia é uma tríade de depressão (aumento de suicídios e ansiedade), adição de álcool e drogas e agressão (violência doméstica, trafico de seres humanos, etc.). Sento-me no terminal do metro dos Restauradores e observo milhares de pessoas sem tempo, correndo contra o tempo para trabalharem sem parar e completamente cegos para não perceberem o seu próprio vazio espiritual (o coronário que se metamorfoseou de coronavírus).

Most people live based on appearances, superficiality and an existential emptiness in patterns of fleeting pleasurable behaviours, rampant consumerism and disposability, the superfluous, the culture of fast food or veganism and what is socially acceptable on social networks. I look at Portugal and globalization and observe a phase of ethical debacle as if it were the end to ethics (corrupt politicians and magistrates, domestic violence, paedophilia, etc.), a political, economic and religious time of deconstruction of social standards and values (without any effort to defend tradition), leading to bland moralism and submission to fake news. We live in a consumerist and individualistic culture, that is, we live under the dictatorship of Having (the awakening of selfishness and detachment in interpersonal relationships) as if Having was Being (it is in Being that our identity lives and shapes our character to cohabit lovingly both socially and emotionally. The existential vacuum which most people feel and experience is a triad of depression (increased rates of suicide and anxiety), addiction to alcohol and drugs and aggression (domestic violence, human trafficking, etc.). When Pandora’s box closes, Hope will remain, green in colour (like money), the last emotion to come out and that the Gods, after their revenge on humanity because the advances in technique, science, technology, artificial intelligence did not respect nature and, now, the Supreme Architect of this Universe allows human beings after this Dante tragedy to be able to love each other more and to become more human with greater respect for mother nature.

O Coronavírus obriga-nos a largar um discurso vazio (niilista) para um reencontro da nossa essência como humano e pessoa. Tenho plena consciência que o Coronavírus é menos mortal do que o cancro, doenças cardíacas e metabólicas, HIV, tuberculose, etc. Quando se fechar a caixa de Pandora, ficará a Esperança, de cor verde (como o dinheiro) a última emoção a sair e que os Deuses após a sua vingança sobre a humanidade porque os avanços da técnica, da ciência, da tecnologia, da inteligência artificial não respeitaram a natureza e, agora, o Supremo Arquiteto deste Universo permita que os seres humanos, após esta dantesca tragédia, sejam capazes de se amarem cada vez mais e adquirirem mais humanitude e um maior respeito pela natureza mãe. Ao longo da história da humanidade, a esperança e a fé têm sido utilizados pelos políticos como um dos mecanismos de controlo social para que as pessoas estejam adormecidas, sonhando sem parar, mas nunca despertarão para a realidade. Francis Bacon dizia que “a esperança é um bom pequeno-almoço, porém uma má refeição”. Todos nós temos a esperança que algo positivo irá acontecer após as quarentenas e os confinamentos e tenho a esperança que no fim não tenha sido desastroso para a humanidade todos os erros cometidos com esta pandemia. É bom acordar com a esperança de que as coisas vão melhorar com as vacinas, mas poderá ser maléfico se ao acordarmos verificarmos o desaire económico, social e principalmente nas doenças adjacentes que ficaram por cuidar (cancro, doenças cardíacas, metabólicas, etc.).

Throughout the history of humanity, hope and faith have been used by politicians as one of the mechanisms of social control, so that people are asleep, dreaming endlessly but never waking up to reality. Francis Bacon said that “hope is a good breakfast, but it is a bad supper”. We all hope that something positive will happen after quarantines and lockdowns and I hope that in the end, all the mistakes made during this pandemic will not have been disastrous for humanity. It is good to wake up with the hope that things will get better with the vaccines, but it can be harmful if we wake up to all the economic, social and especially the adjacent diseases that were not taken care of (cancer, heart and metabolic diseases, etc.). Nietzsche said that hope is the worst of evils, as it prolongs man’s torment. Seneca said that true happiness is enjoying the present, without an anxious dependence on the future, distracting us with hopes or fears, but being satisfied with what we have, which is plenty for those who want nothing. The greatest blessings of humanity are within us and within reach. A wise man is satisfied with his fate, whatever it may be, without desiring what he does not have. In 2022, Pandora’s box will close and bring hope (it is always the last to die) like a boat’s anchor which is a symbol of hope, strength and fidelity, for sailors it was the only hope amid the storm, maintaining the boat’s stability and, in a Christian context, when pursued by the Roman empire, the anchor was a symbol of occult worship.

Nietzsche arrolava que “a esperança é o pior dos males, pois prolonga o tormento do Homem”. Séneca dizia que “a verdadeira felicidade é gozar o presente, sem uma dependência ansiosa do futuro, não nos distrair com esperanças, nem medos, mas ficar satisfeitos com o que temos, o que é suficiente para aquele que, assim, nada quer. As maiores bênçãos da humanidade estão dentro de nós e ao nosso alcance. Um homem sábio está satisfeito com sua sina, seja qual for, sem desejar aquilo que não tem”. No ano de 2022, a caixa de Pandora fechar-se-á e trará a esperança (é a última a morrer), como uma âncora de um barco, que é um símbolo de esperança, força e fidelidade, sendo para os marinheiros a esperança de, na tempestade, manter a estabilidade do barco e, no contexto cristão, quando perseguidos pelo império romano, a âncora era um símbolo de culto oculto. A âncora é dividida em dois elementos simbólicos. O semicírculo virado para cima, que representa o mundo espiritual, e a cruz, que representa a existência real e contínua no mundo material (Na Bíblia, 6:19: “temos essa esperança como a âncora da alma, firme e segura”) para todos os seres humanos, com inúmeras aprendizagens como: A forma de nos relacionarmos uns com os outros e com a natureza. O propósito de vida assente noutros valores e éticas sociais. O transcender da nossa pequenez, da vaidade e o narcisismo e exaltando a virtude, a amizade, a fraternidade, a solidariedade. Se calhar, teremos de mudar a maneira como olhamos para nós próprios, para a família, para os amigos, para os grupos, para as organizações, para as instituições, para a política, para SPOTLIGHT: HOPE

a sociedade, para a globalização, para os bens de consumo, enquanto consumidor, para o dinheiro, para a prosperidade, para o êxito, para a natureza, para o mundo, para o cosmos e para o Divino. Um Divino ou um Deus que não podemos tocar, cheirar, ouvir, nem ver. A questão fulcral para 2021 hoje será: Conseguimos imaginar o Mundo do qual nós nem sequer somos o centro e muitas vezes nem sequer estamos centrados? Qual será o nosso lugar na família, nos grupos, na comunidade, na sociedade e nesta globalização? Urge, questionar-te qual será o teu lugar: Enquanto filha/filho? Enquanto mãe/pai? Enquanto amigo? Enquanto trabalhador? Enquanto líder? Enquanto seguidor de outros nas redes sociais? Quando estou sozinho ou comigo próprio? Quando estou feliz? Quando estou deprimido? Quando tenho dívidas? Quando tenho salários em atraso? Quando estou no desemprego? E a grande questão para 2021, talvez seja: qual é o lugar do dinheiro, da prosperidade e do êxito na tua vida e na vida da tua família? Quero recordar-vos que muitos de nós temos um sabotador no nosso inconsciente e há emaranhamentos familiares, que não nos permitem ter dinheiro, nem descobrir a felicidade.

Finally, being hopeful that 2021 and 2022, will be years of change because while there is life there is hope. I advise you to take a sheet of A4 paper and write down: What do I want to do and how? What do I want to have and how? What do I want to be and how? What do I want to feel and how? WHAT DO YOU HOPE FOR?

Ouço, quase sempre, nas consultas, quando falo de prosperidade/dinheiro: Ter dinheiro angustia-me Sinto-me culpado Não mereço ter dinheiro Não tenho direito Chega para pagar as minhas dívidas É como se fosse areia entre os dedos Guardo o dinheiro para os tempos difíceis e quando chega esse tempo, tudo se estraga em casa. É o carro, a máquina de lavar louça, uma operação. Urge perceber, em 2021, quais serão os emaranhamentos mentais que nos impedirão de ter saúde, dinheiro, prosperidade ou êxito. Há, de certeza, nos campos morfogenéticos, bloqueios transgeracionais que nos dificultam de ser felizes e de ter prosperidade ou êxito no trabalho. Quando oiço a maioria das pessoas falarem sobre o dinheiro ou sobre o trabalho, observo que o “vil metal” está intimamente ligado a conflitos, carências psicoafectivas, a cenários repetitivos de dívidas, ruínas, heranças mal distribuídas por fidelidades familiares inconscientes e transgeracionais. Para finalizar, e tendo a esperança que 2021 e 2022 serão anos de mudança, porque enquanto há vida há esperança, aconselho-vos a pegarem numa folha de papel e escrever: O que quero Fazer? E Como? O que quero Ter? E Como? O que quero Ser? E Como? O que quero Sentir? E Como? QUAL A TUA ESPERANÇA?

O Pestana Palace foi classificado como Monumento Nacional em 1997, sendo um lugar único e mágico que evoca histórias de amor, de anjos, de fadas e que ao longo destes últimos vinte anos tem abrigado escritores, estrelas de rock... e todos os que ali têm encontrado o espaço ideal de privacidade inspiração e confiança para se sentirem em paz, confortáveis e rodeados de magia. Fica no alto de uma das 7 colinas de Lisboa, de jardins majestosos rodeado e de uma vista deslumbrante para o rio Tejo. É aqui onde se iniciam muitos casamentos e que muitos outros sonhos se transformam em realidade. Este Hotel é inesquecível porque existe dentro dele um palácio “vivido”, o que o torna num lugar único e místico, onde o tempo é esquecido, permitindo-nos descansar, parar e encontrar balanço para um novo “restart”, para um novo inicio com ânimo reforçado. Este Palácio foi mandado construir em 1905 pelo então Marquês de Valle Flor ao Arq. italiano Nicola Bigaglia, que, entretanto, faleceu, sendo o arquitecto José Ferreira da Costa que, a partir de 1910, continua a acompanhar todas as obras, nomeadamente, as novas alas e as Cocheiras. Sabe-se, ainda, que os desenhos de alguns detalhes do palácio são de autoria do arq. Miguel Ventura Terra.

The unique and magical Pestana Palace Lisboa was classified as a National Monument in 1997. Evoking stories of love, angels and fairies it has sheltered writers, rock stars, actors and countless other renowned personalities. All guests have found here the privacy, inspiration and trust they need to feel totally at peace in magical surroundings. Located at the top of one of the 7 hills of Lisbon, the Pestana Palace is surrounded by majestic gardens and has a breathtaking view of the Tagus River. It is here that many are united in marriage and where many other dreams come true. This hotel is truly unforgettable because the palace has a lived-in feel to it, making it a unique and mystical place where time is forgotten and where one can rest, rebalance and restart with a reinforced spirit. The Marquis of Valle Flor, commissioned the Italian architect, Nicola Bigaglia, to build the palace. In 1910, upon the death of Bigaglia, the architect José Ferreira da Costa continued to monitor all the works, namely the new wings and the stables. Some other details of the palace were designed by the architect, Miguel Ventura Terra.

O Palácio Valle Flor foi adquirido em 1992 pelo Grupo Pestana, passando a partir de então por obras de restauro e adaptação, em conformidade com o projeto do Arq. Manuel Tainha, que o tornaram numa luxuosa unidade hoteleira de grande prestígio. As quatro suites reais estão situadas nas dependências do antigo palácio, com decoração de época, de influência francesa, revestimentos de mármore, frescos nos tetos, nas paredes e com grandes vitrais nas janelas. Novas alas foram erguidas para abrigar mais quartos e grandes salões para eventos. Na parte externa, além dos jardins e da piscina, destaca-se a chamada Casa do Lago, um pavilhão em estilo oriental, também do final do século XIX.

The Valle Flor Palace was acquired in 1992 by the Pestana Hotel Group and since then it has undergone extensive restoration and adaptation works, in accordance to the project by architect, Manuel Tainha, who transformed it into a prestigious luxury hotel. The four royal suites are located on the premises of the old palace, with period interior decoration of French influence, including marble cladding, frescoes on the ceilings and walls, and large stained glass windows. New wings have been added to accommodate more rooms and large conference and events rooms. Outside, in addition to the stunning gardens and pool, the Casa do Lago, a late 19th century oriental-style pavilion, is particularly striking.
