DEAR GUEST É sempre com a alma renovada que lhe damos as boas-vindas a mais uma edição da WINK. Curiosamente, esta é a 11.ª, um número associado à perfeição e à colaboração. Um dos destaques desta edição é, precisamente, a já conhecida parceria entre o Pestana Hotel Group e o craque mundial Cristiano Ronaldo, que está prestes a dar frutos com a abertura do primeiro dos Pestana CR7 Lifestyle Hotels, precisamente na Madeira, berço, quer do Pestana Hotel Group, quer do futebolista internacional. A Madeira não podia assim deixar de ser um dos destinos em evidência e, correndo o risco de ser acusado de parcial, pois é pública a minha paixão pela ilha, esta é uma viagem que recomendo por vários motivos, desde a impressionante e exuberante beleza natural até à arte de bem receber dos hospitaleiros madeirenses, que fizeram deste arquipélago (sim, dele faz também parte a paradisíaca ilha dourada, o Porto Santo!) um dos tesouros turísticos em Portugal. It is always with a renewed soul that we welcome you to another edition of Wink. Interestingly, this is the 11th, a number associated with perfection and cooperation. One of this edition’s highlights is precisely the partnership between the Pestana Hotel Group and the world star, Cristiano Ronaldo, which is about to bear fruit with the opening of the first of the Pestana CR7 Lifestyle Hotels in Madeira, the birthplace of both the Pestana Hotel Group and the international footballer. Madeira, therefore, had to feature as one of the destinations of choice and, risking being accused of being biased because my passion for the Island is public; this is a trip that I personally recommend for a number of reasons. Its stunning and lush natural beauty and the art of Madeiran hospitality has made this archipelago (yes, it also includes the golden paradise Island of Porto Santo!) one of Portugal’s tourism treasures. Speaking of which, we feature two more treasures in this edition: Cascais and Geres. In the noble village of Cascais, close to Lisbon, discover the Pestana Cidadela – Pousada & Art District, an exclusive member of the Leading Hotels of the World. This is the first hotel in Europe to welcome and promote an Art District within its premises, with a project room, six ateliers of the resident artists and two museums: the World Press Cartoon and the Presidency Museum. An oasis of creativity embraced by one of the most beautiful villages in Portugal, once the summer destination of choice of kings and queens. The third and final treasure to explore is the Natural Park of Geres, in the north of Portugal. In the north of Portugal, relatively close to Braga, arising from the dense vegetation of the Gerês mountain range is the Pousada de Amares, an ancient monastery conserved in its most authentic state where the granite stone is combined with modernity and comfort. Architecturally sublime, a project by Souto Moura which, in his own words, uses the available stones to build a new space, protecting the ruins, which were of such influence over the centuries in this area, by transforming them. "Há sítios no mundo que são como certas existências humanas: tudo se conjuga para que nada falte à sua grandeza e perfeição. Este Gerês é um deles", dizia o escritor Miguel Torga. E basta pisar esta região, sentir a pureza do ar, ouvir o cantar das cascatas e das florestas para perceber que Torga tinha razão. Aqui tudo é perfeito. Este é um destino turístico repleto de incrível património que manteve a ruralidade: aldeias de granito que pouco mudaram desde o nascimento de Portugal, no séc. XII, bois conduzidos por mulheres totalmente vestidas de preto e rebanhos entregues a si mesmos. É uma viagem no tempo, onde a maior e mais emblemática de todas as atrações é, sem dúvida, a mãe-natureza. Paisagens de cortar a respiração, que vão do verde exuberante no verão ao laranja matizado no outono, impõem-se diante dos nossos olhos, como cenários idílicos, e convidam-nos a entrar e a deixar para trás as lides do dia-a-dia. Aqui corre realmente o risco de se esquecer de tudo, enquanto contempla as grandes cascatas que findam em irresistíveis lagos cristalinos e onde vai querer mergulhar. O esplendor da região é tanto que, cada vez mais, os jovens se rendem e olham para o Gerês como o santuário dos desportos radicais. Mas nem só aventuras procuram estes novos peregrinos. É comum encontrar grupos de jovens criativos que buscam neste ambiente bucólico a inspiração necessária para trabalhos altamente criativos. Visite as inúmeras aldeias históricas como o distante Soajo, com uma deliciosa vista sobre o Rio Lima, Castro Laboreiro, a Peneda, o Lindoso ou a aldeia submersa de Vilarinho das Furnas. Alguns pontos são de passagem obrigatória como é o caso da medieval Ponte da Mizarela, conhecida como a ponte do diabo, ou a Cascata do Arado. Se a tudo juntar a simpatia das pessoas e as atrações para o paladar, como o conhecido cabrito da serra ou a carne barrosã, com o famoso vinho verde a acompanhar, é indiscutível que este sítio continua a ser um segredo bem guardado que ainda poucos descobriram.

"There are places in the world that are like certain human existences: everything comes together so that nothing may be lacking to their greatness and perfection. Gerês is one of them", said the writer Miguel Torga. Just take a step into this region, feel the purity of the air, hear the singing of waterfalls and forests and you’ll realize that Torga was right. Everything is perfect here. This is a tourist destination of amazing heritage that has maintained its rurality: granite villages that have changed little since the birth of Portugal in the 12th century, oxen driven by women fully-clothed in black and herds left to their own devices. It’s a journey through time, where the largest and most impressive attraction is undoubtedly Mother Nature. Breathtaking landscapes, ranging from lush green in the summer to tinted orange in the autumn, present themselves as idyllic settings before our eyes, inviting us to enter and leave behind the daily toil. Here you really do run the risk of forgetting everything while contemplating the huge waterfalls cascading into irresistible pristine lakes, into which you’ll want to dive.

The splendour of the region is such that young people are increasingly surrendering to it, viewing Gerês as a sanctuary for radical sports. But it’s not just adventures that these new pilgrims seek. It’s common to find groups of young creative people who seek this bucolic environment as the inspiration they need for highly creative work. Visit the numerous historic villages such as Soajo, with a delightful view of the River Lima, Castro Laboreiro, Peneda, Lindoso or the submerged village of Vilarinho das Furnas. Some sights are not to be missed such as the medieval Mizarela Bridge, known as the Devil's Bridge, or the Arado Cascade. If you add to all of this, the friendliness of the people and temptations for the palate, such as the famous Cabrito da Serra (young goat) or the Barrosã meat, paired with the famous green wine, there’s no doubt that this place remains a best-kept secret that only very few have discovered.

FELIX PETERSEN Texto e entrevista de | Text & interview by Roger Mor Meeting and talking to Felix Petersen is inspiring, liberating and can destroy many of the preconceived ideas that are drummed into us. Born in Berlin in 1976, he is now a known figure in the world of tech startups and about a year ago he swapped the German capital for Lisbon, where he now lives with his family. Father of two girls, Felix Peterson awakened to the internet world when he was very young, even before it existed. He began to explore the world of mailboxes, which was basically a link between two computers over a phone. In the mid-80s, his dream was was to have a Comodor 64, a popular computer which was ideal for games and he did everything he could to convince his mother to buy him one. She wouldn’t, afraid that he would become hooked on computer games. Instead, she gave him an IBM personal computer. A computer for the corporate environment and much less fun as all it allowed him to do was to programme and write texts. Nevertheless, it would eventually shape his future. He learned web programming and started studying Computer Science and Sociology but with the advent of the Internet, Felix immediately realized that the world would change and he wanted to be part of that change. He quit studying, none of his teachers had ever inspired him, and founded a website development company. The young geek who was trying to establish himself as a DJ in the music scene in Berlin, soon started building websites and experimenting with the new medium. Gone were the DJ days but the music connection remains until today, with Felix Petersen being the first investor to write out a cheque to the popular SoundCloud platform. Brave, creative, bold and fearless, the basic qualities of an entrepreneur, Felix Petersen never let the 2000 internet crash that led him to close down his first company, get him down. Quite to the contrary. In 2001 he founded Plazes, a successful pioneering geospatial company, purchased by Nokia in 2008 and later founded Amen, an application for sharing opinions that he exited in 2013. It was these two projects that placed him in the spotlight of the entrepreneurial ecosystem of Berlin and the rest of the world, making him one of today’s most sought-after investors by many international companies. Among some of the keys to his success, Felix mentions the desire to be independent and the ability to do things differently. He believes that entrepreneurs need to start at a very early age, before the weight of responsibility conditions creativity, and reject the formatting imposed by large companies. There is a rebellious nature to Felix’s ideas that seems to pay off. During one of his many visits to Portugal, he fell in love with Lisbon and its newly found entrepreneurial spirit. In addition to his numerous international investments, Felix is currently a partner at Faber Ventures, an investment vehicle for technological startups and he is the mentor of countless creative minds that are revolutionizing the internet world. Conhecer e conversar com Felix Petersen é inspirador, libertador e pode destruir muitas das ideias feitas que nos meteram na cabeça. Nascido em Berlim, em 1976, é hoje um dos nomes maiores no universo das start-ups tecnológicas (empresas em início de atividade) e há cerca de um ano trocou a capital alemã por Lisboa, onde reside com a família. Pai de duas filhas, Felix Peterson despertou cedo para o mundo da internet, mesmo antes dela existir. Começou a explorar os conceitos de navegabilidade graças ao mundo das mailboxes, que basicamente era uma ligação entre dois computadores através de um telefone. Em meados dos anos 80, o seu maior desejo era ter o Comodor 64, um popular computador ideal para jogos, e Felix tudo fez para convencer a mãe a comprar-lhe um. Não conseguiu, ela tinha medo que ele ficasse viciado em jogos de computador. Em vez desse ofereceu-lhe um IBM, um computador pensado para o meio empresarial, bem mais aborrecido, que só dava para programar e escrever textos, mas que acabaria por lhe traçar o futuro. Aprendeu a programar e começou a estudar Ciências da Computação e Sociologia, mas com o nascimento da Internet Felix percebeu de imediato que o mundo ia mudar e ele queria fazer parte da mudança. Larga os estudos, até porque nunca teve professores que o cativassem, e funda uma empresa de criação de websites. O jovem nerd, que tentava impor-se como Dj na cena musical Techno em Berlim, começou a criar sites e

A carreira de Dj ficou para trás, mas a ligação à música ficou até hoje, tendo sido Felix Petersen o primeiro investidor a passar um cheque à popular plataforma SoundCloud. Corajoso, criativo, arrojado e destemido, qualidades básicas de um empreendedor, Felix Petersen não se deixou ir abaixo quando, devido ao crash da Internet em 2000, a sua primeira empresa fechou. Muito pelo contrário. Em 2001 fundou a Plazes, uma bem sucedida empresa pioneira na área geoespacial, comprada pela Nokia em 2008, e mais tarde fundou a Amen, uma aplicação para partilha de opinião, da qual saiu em 2013. Dois projetos que o colocariam em destaque no cenário do empreendedorismo em Berlim e no mundo, fazendo dele um dos investidores mais desejados atualmente por muitas empresas internacionais. Entre as chaves do sucesso, Felix sugere a vontade de ser independente e a capacidade de fazer diferente.

Additionally, Faber Ventures has 'seed' co-investments with the main Portuguese investors such as Caixa Capital, Shilling Capital Partners (a Business Angels’ company), Portugal Ventures (a public venture capital company), and with the international, Index Ventures and White Star Capital and as well as German investors. A self-confessed “bad employee” because he never liked bosses, Felix Petersen has always wanted to be a free man. According to him,

Being a profound connoisseur of the internet’s intricacies and all the economic potential that the network continues to reveal, Felix Petersen highlights the arrival of the Web Summit in Lisbon, from 7 to 10 November 2016. Just as there is the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and the world’s largest conference on tourism in Berlin, the ITB, this is the largest Internet conference which, up until now, has always been held in Dublin. It is estimated that the Web Summit will bring more than 60 thousand visitors to Lisbon, 650 speakers and more than 2,000 companies. Lisbon will be in the spotlight and the focus of investors' attention, so it’s not surprising that the Portuguese State alone will invest €1.3 million in the event. In addition to the unconventional summit that brings together the world’s biggest nerds, there are the Night Summit, Surf Summit and the Food Summit, other fun events which will involve the world's best in other areas such as surfing or cuisine. Onde estás neste momento? No meu escritório, em Lisboa.

Why did you choose to live in Lisbon? I have a long-standing connection with it. I spent a lot of time in Portugal when I was younger, at my family’s summer house in the Alentejo. Every time I was here, I always made sure I had a couple of days in Lisbon. I like the mix of openness to new things and the newly-found dynamic. Yet it is still very traditional and has a social fabric which is still very much intact, which will hopefully be maintained so it doesn’t become just another destination, like any other. Also there is no ageism, which I only noticed after moving here from ultra-young Berlin. I like older people. However, there really was absolutely nothing wrong with living in Berlin. It will always be my home. It was just that after 40 years living there and 10 years as a family, we felt we needed to pick a different base for a

De onde acabas de chegar? De uma viagem a Berlim e a Varsóvia. Porque decidiste viver em Lisboa? Tenho uma ligação de muitos anos com esta cidade. Passei muito tempo em Portugal quando era mais novo, na casa de férias da minha família no Alentejo. Sempre que ia para lá, certificava-me de que passava também alguns dias em Lisboa. Gosto da abertura e da diversidade das pessoas aqui, assim como esta dinâmica recente. Contudo, a tradição mantêm-se e o tecido social ainda está intacto e espero que isto se conserve, para que não se torne um destino como qualquer outro.

Além disso, não há discriminação em relação aos mais velhos, coisa que só reparei depois de me ir embora de Berlim, que é uma cidade muito jovem. Eu gosto de pessoas mais velhas. Apesar disto tudo, não havia nada de errado quando eu vivia em Berlim, será sempre o meu lar. Só que, depois de viver lá durante 40 anos, 10 dos quais em família, sentimos que precisávamos de escolher outro sitio para nos basearmos. Parece-me que vamos ficar em Portugal durante uns tempos.

while. It feels like we will stay in Portugal for some time. Have you ever left something in a hotel that was valuable to you? I once had a laptop and a cell phone stolen from my hotel room in NYC but that’s just stuff. The most curious part was the reaction of the hotel staff: “This is not our fault!” and then afterwards the police officers told me that this is New York City and basically called me a tourist for leaving a laptop in my hotel room. I must add that this was not a cheap hotel either. Also, it was the old New York.

Alguma vez te esqueceste de alguma coisa que era valiosa para ti num hotel? Uma vez roubaram-me um computador portátil e um telemóvel num quarto de hotel em Nova Iorque, mas isso não tem muita importância, são só coisas materiais. O mais curioso foi a reação da equipa do hotel: “Não temos culpa disto!” e depois vieram os agentes da policia que me disseram que aquilo era Nova Iorque e basicamente chamaram-me de turista por ter deixado o meu portátil no quarto de hotel. Devo dizer que não era um hotel barato e estava situado na parte antiga da cidade.

What’s your favourite city, and why? It depends on the circumstances and my mood. I’m an amateur photographer and taking pictures for me is just mindful seeing. Being open to things you might otherwise overlook and finding patterns. When you take pictures there is something remarkable about every place. How does travelling influence your work? Living influences my work. But really, I feel like I have so much input to provide and inspiration that increasingly I have been trying to settle into a simpler and more repetitive rhythm. Less instead of more stimulation. I’m not really very good at that yet, I must admit.

Qual é a tua cidade preferida, e porquê? Depende das circunstâncias e do meu humor. Sou um fotógrafo amador, para mim tirar fotografias significa apenas estar atento às coisas que estão ao meu redor. É estar aberto e observar aquilo que me escaparia normalmente e encontrar padrões. Quando tiras fotografias vês algo notável em cada sítio.

Which is your most travelled road? I try not to have one. There are a couple of cities where I spent more time than in others, at certain stages in my life and they will always be associated with a specific episode or relationship in my life. Among them are New York, Zurich, London, Cologne, Chicago, Tokyo, and San Francisco.

Em que medida é que as tuas viagens influenciam o teu trabalho? A minha vida influencia o meu trabalho. Sinceramente, sinto que posso contribuir tanto e tenho tanta inspiração que cada vez mais tento adotar um ritmo mais simples e repetitivo. Menos estímulos, em vez de mais. Admito que ainda não sou muito bom nisto.

What are your favourite holiday destinations now? Recently we went on a road trip with our two girls through Morocco in our Land Rover which doubles up as a camper van. That was amazing. I’m really enjoying road trips right now, probably because I only just recently got a driver’s license. It’s a more intense and truly free experience especially in a go-anywhere vehicle. It’s mind-blowing to stand on a sand dune with the whole of the Sahara stretching out in front of you and knowing that you could just keep going and going if you wanted to.

Qual é a estrada pela qual passaste mais vezes? Tento não ter uma. Há algumas cidades onde passei mais tempo do que noutras em certas alturas da minha vida, e essas ficarão para sempre associadas a um episódio/acontecimento específico ou a uma relação que tenha tido. Entre elas estão Nova Iorque, Zurique, Londres, Chicago, Colônia, Tóquio e São Francisco. Quais são os teus destinos de férias preferidos? Recentemente fizemos uma viagem de carro por Marrocos, com as nossas filhas, no nosso Land Rover que se transforma numa caravana. Essa foi uma experiência incrível. Neste momento gosto mesmo de viagens de carro, provavelmente porque acabei de tirar a carta de condução. É uma experiência bem mais intensa e verdadeiramente livre, especialmente quando levas um carro todo o terreno. Estar de pé no topo de uma duna de areia, com vista para todo o deserto do Saara, e saber que se quisesses podias simplesmente continuar indefinidamente...é alucinante.

What’s the first thing you do when you reach a hotel room? Rearrange the furniture and call for a bucket of ice. When you’re packing, what’s the first thing you put in your case? Passport, credit card, sometimes a money belt. Everything else is optional, isn’t it? I’m a very minimalist packer.

What is your earliest travel memory? I was three years old and in Crete with my parents. They made me take a nap and I didn’t want to. So I had a poo behind the curtain in the bedroom to punish them. Funny, this is not only my earliest memory of travelling, it’s my earliest memory, period. Not sure what that means but my therapist had a laugh.

Qual é a primeira coisa que fazes quando chegas ao teu quarto de hotel? Reorganizo a mobília e peço um balde de gelo. Quando fazes a mala, qual é a primeira coisa que guardas? Passaporte, cartão de crédito, às vezes um cinto de dinheiro. Todo o resto é opcional, certo? Sou um viajante muito minimalista. Qual é a tua memória mais antiga de uma viagem? Tinha eu três anos e estávamos na ilha de Creta com os meus pais. Puseram-me a fazer uma sesta e eu não queria. Por isso, fiz cocó por detrás da cortina no quarto para me vingar. Tem piada, esta não só é a minha memória mais antiga de uma viagem, é a minha memória mais antiga de toda a vida. Não tenho a certeza do que poderá significar, mas o meu terapeuta riu-se bastante.

Where did you go on your first holiday without your parents? From West-Berlin to Sylt, a small island in the North Sea, to visit my grandparents. I was six years old and at that time the wall was still standing and the only sensible way to get there was by plane. It was a 25 minute British Airways flight from Berlin Tegel. I remember the plane was a 727 and they even served breakfast. In those days, air travel was still dignified.

Para onde foste quando viajaste sem os teus pais pela primeira vez? De Berlim-Oeste até Sylt, uma pequena ilha no mar do Norte, para visitar os meus avós. Tinha eu seis anos nessa altura e o muro de Berlim ainda estava erguido e a única maneira de aceder a essa ilha era de avião. A viagem durava 25minutos com a British Airways, partindo de Berlim Tegel. Lembro-me de que o avião era um 727 e até serviam pequenoalmoço. Nesses tempos, viagens aéreas ainda eram dignamente consideradas.

How many passports do you have? Four Where do you feel most at home? I will always have my roots in Berlin but I can feel at home in more places than one. Where in the world have you felt happiest? It’s not a matter of place. Describe the most beautiful landscape that you remember seeing. It sounds like a cliché but I think the most amazing experience I had in nature was sleeping alone in a tent in the highlands of Iceland and waking up at night, stepping out of the tent to find the whole sky illuminated by the most amazing northern lights. I think it was particularly overwhelming because I totally didn’t anticipate it. When I went to sleep, the sky was cloudy and I simply didn’t expect the northern lights to be so vivid and grand.

Quantos passaportes tens? Quatro. Onde te sentes mais em casa? As minhas raízes estarão sempre em Berlim, mas consigo me sentir em casa em vários sítios. Onde te sentiste mais feliz? Não é uma questão de lugar. Descreve a paisagem mais bonita de que te lembres. Isto vai soar a cliché mas acho que a experiência mais incrível que tive na natureza foi quando dormi sozinho numa tenda nas planícies da Islândia e acordei de noite, saí da tenda e vi o céu iluminado pelas extraordinárias luzes. Acho que me marcou de tal forma porque não estava à espera. Quando adormeci, o céu estava nublado e simplesmente não estava à espera que as luzes do norte fossem tão vívidas e tão grandiosas.

How does travelling affect your creative process? It actually distracts me from it. If you owned a hotel, where would it be and what would it be like? A grand hotel in Switzerland in the 1920s.

Em que medida é que as viagens afetam o teu processo criativo? Na verdade, distraem-me dele. Se fosses dono de um hotel, como é que ele seria? Um hotel luxuoso na Suíça dos anos 1920.

CASCAIS A VILA QUE ENCANTA THE ENCHANTING TOWN

A few kilometers from Lisbon and nestled at the foot of the charming Sintra hills, Cascais gained fame as a fashionable summer retreat during the nineteenth century when the Portuguese monarchy and other European royalty chose it as a haven during the Second World War. Over time, the village has become more than just a fishing village with dream-like beaches, becoming an important cultural centre, with icons that recall its maritime heyday with elegant lighthouses, fortresses and the majestic seventeenth century Citadel. Until the mid-nineteenth century, due to the poor access to the fishing village, there was a popular saying that said "Cascais, once and never again." Everything changed, however, when the Portuguese royal family discovered the virtues of the region and chose it as a holiday resort. At the end of September every year, the kings would trade the Pena Palace in Sintra for the Citadel Palace in Cascais, where they would remain until November. It was King Dom Luis, father of Don Carlos, who commissioned the works at the Citadel to welcome the royal family and the most important members of the court during these months. In the late nineteenth century the poor fishing village, which was an hour’s drive from Lisbon, became the favourite summer destination of the Portuguese aristocracy and high bourgeoisie and of many other influential figures in Europe.

A poucos quilómetros de Lisboa e encostada ao charme da Serra de Sintra, Cascais ganhou fama como elegante retiro de verão com a monarquia portuguesa durante o século XIX e como porto de abrigo da realeza europeia durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial. Com o tempo, a vila transformou-se e, além das praias de sonho, adquiriu um sólido estatuto de pólo cultural, recheado de ícones que relembram o seu apogeu marítimo, como os elegantes faróis, as fortalezas e a imponente Cidadela do século XVII. Até meados do século XIX, devido aos maus acessos à vila piscatória, havia um ditado popular que dizia “Cascais, uma vez e nunca mais”. Mas tudo mudou quando a realeza portuguesa descobriu as virtudes da região e a elegeu como estância de férias. Quando chegava o final de Setembro, todos os anos, os reis trocavam o Palácio da Pena pelo Palácio da Cidadela, em Cascais, onde ficavam até Novembro. Foi o Rei Dom Luís, pai de Dom Carlos, que mandou fazer as obras na Cidadela para alojar a família real e os mais altos elementos da corte nos meses de veraneio. Em finais do século XIX a pobre vila piscatória, que ficava a horas de viagem de Lisboa, tornava-se o destino de verão favorito de toda a aristocracia e alta burguesia portuguesa e de muitas figuras influentes da Europa.

Son of an architect and a writer, Paulo Arraiano was brought up surrounded by artists, getting an early start in the fascinating world of the arts. With a background in communication, he started working as a graphic designer and art director for Nike and on two of his own editorial projects. Paulo Arraiano studied drawing and painting at ARCO in Lisbon and started exhibiting his illustration and design work in 2004, soon becoming part of the public art world. However, it was the boom of urban art and its pseudo-decorative transformation of cities which led Arraiano to move away from this area as it lost its political significance. Regular presence in Stockholm and London and wellknown for his large format works, Arraiano has gained prominence in Portugal and is currently curator of the “Point of View" exhibition, held at Pena Palace in Sintra until May 2017. This site-specific collective exhibition brings together ten internationally renowned artists including Alberto Carneiro, the father of minimalism in Portugal, Vhils, the Brazilian Antonio Bokel, the Mexican Bosco Sodi and the Portuguese photographer João Paulo Serafim, among others.

Filho de um arquitecto e de uma escritora, Paulo Arraiano cresceu no meio de artistas, despertando cedo para o fascinante mundo das artes. Com formação na área da comunicação, começou por assumir o papel de designer gráfico e diretor de arte, nomeadamente na Nike e em dois projetos editoriais dele próprio. Paulo Arraiano, de 39 anos, que estudou Desenho e Pintura na ARCO, em Lisboa, começou por expôr ilustração e desenho, em 2004, e depressa entrou no circuito da arte pública. Contudo, o boom da arte urbana e a sua transformação em pseudo-decoração das cidades levou a que Arraiano se afastasse desta arte devido à perda do seu poder de intervenção. Presença regular em Estocolmo e Londres, e conhecido pelas suas obras de grandes dimensões, Arraiano tem vindo a ganhar destaque em Portugal e assume actualmente a curadoria de “Point of View”, patente no Palácio da Pena, em Sintra, até Maio de 2017. Nascido em Paris, há 42 anos, João Paulo Serafim descobriu em criança o fascínio pela imagem, começando a fotografar com a Reflex do seu pai. Logo após a mudança para Lisboa, com cerca de 15 anos, e já amante do cinema, começa a estudar fotografia na ARCO e aí descobre que esta seria a sua ferramenta, não apenas documental, mas de expressão. A formação em Artes Plásticas veio compor o cenário e empurrou João Paulo Serafim para o circuito das artes contemporânea e performativa, colaborando ainda hoje com o Teatro do Vestido e com o afamado coreógrafo Victor Hugo Pontes. Desde 2005, desenvolve o MIIAC - Museu Improvável de Imagem e Arte Contemporânea, um museu ficcionado baseado numa pesquisa iconográfica de um acervo pessoal e documental, construído ao longo do seu percurso. Em “The Point of View” apresenta um objecto misto, escultórico, que é em simultâneo uma câmara fotográfica onde as pessoas podem entrar e onde há formação da imagem. À semelhança de Paulo Arraiano, também João Paulo Serafim é um dos artistas residentes no Cidadela Art District, em Cascais, uma proximidade aproveitada por ambos para aprofundarem a forma de comunicar.

Born in Paris 42 years ago, João Paulo Serafim discovered his fascination for images as a child, using his father’s Reflex camera. Soon after moving to Lisbon, aged about 15 and already a cinema lover, he started studying photography at ARCO and discovered that this would be his future tool, not only for documentary work but also as his means of expression. Studying plastic arts set the scene and drove João Paulo Serafim to the contemporary and performative arts circuit, collaborating today with the Teatro do Vestido and the famed choreographer, Victor Hugo Pontes. Since 2005, he has been developing MIIAC – the Improbable Museum of Photography and Contemporary Art, a museum based on iconographic research into his personal and documental collection, built up throughout his career. At “Point of View" he presents an installation which is a large camera which people can enter and witness the formation of images. Like Paulo Arraiano, João Paulo Serafim is also one of the resident artists at the Cidadela Art District in Cascais, a proximity enjoyed by both to further deepen forms of communication.

This is one of several Pestana hotels, a group which, curiously, was born on this Island in 1972, with the opening of the iconic Pestana Carlton. The group has continued to grow since then and in the summer of 2016 will open a new unit in Funchal. This is the first Pestana CR7 hotel, the result of a joint venture between the hotel group and the Portuguese footballer and player of Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo, also a native of Madeira. There are currently four Pestana CR7 hotels planned. In addition to this one in Porto Cruzeiros, Funchal, one will open in the Baixa downtown district of Lisbon, one on the Gran Via in Madrid and another in New York, near Times Square. By late 2017, all of them should be fully operational amounting to a total of 400 rooms. The CR7 brand is the inspiration for the four hotels, which will be based on the 'boutique' and 'lifestyle' concepts, positioning themselves as 'trendsetters' in each of the city’s where they are located. The opening of the first Pestana CR7, which promises to generate fervour among the footballer’s fans, is another good reason to book a trip to Madeira. choreographer, ballerina & COSTUME DESIGNER Numa das manhãs, enquanto descobrimos a zona histórica do Funchal, o nosso olhar é atraído por uma imponente figura à qual era impossível ficar indiferente. Tudo nela fazia sentido… a postura, a maquilhagem, o cabelo, o styling. Dominados pela curiosidade não resistimos a segui-la até chegarmos à conversa. Marta Atayde só podia ser bailarina. Começou a dançar ballet aos sete anos, com Ruth Ashwin, fez o curso especial de bailarinos de Norman Dixon e a seguir, em 1960, entrou para o Ballet Gulbenkian, onde viria a ter um papel de destaque. Correu o mundo a dançar, fez digressões com o Royal Ballet de Londres e trabalhou com os melhores coreógrafos do mundo. Durante cerca de 15 anos foi a ensaiadora do Ballet Gulbenkian, uma carreira que chegou a conciliar com a direção da sua própria escola de bailado em Lisboa. Marta Atayde vive agora no Funchal com o seu marido Carlos Fernandes, fundador da Escola de Ballet do Funchal, e continua ligada ao ensino do bailado e à organização de cursos de verão. 86

During one of the mornings when we were exploring the old part of the town of Funchal, our attention was drawn to an imposing figure who was impossible to remain indifferent to. Everything about her made sense ... her posture, makeup, hair and styling. Overtaken by curiosity, we couldn’t resist following her until we got a chance to talk to her. It was no surprise that Marta Atayde is a dancer. She started dancing ballet at the age of seven with Ruth Ashwin, she attended Norman Dixon’s special ballerina’s courses and then, in 1960, she joined the Gulbenkian Ballet, where she would come to have a prominent role. She danced all over the world; she toured with the London Royal Ballet School and worked with the world’s best choreographers. For about 15 years she was the director of rehearsals at the Gulbenkian Ballet School, a career that she came to reconcile with the direction of her own ballet school in Lisbon. Marta Atayde is now based in Funchal with her husband Carlos Fernandes, founder of the Ballet School of Funchal, and is still actively involved in teaching ballet and in the organization of summer courses.

Quais são os seus prazeres favoritos? Uma boa patuscada com a família e/ou os amigos, um bom espetáculo desportivo e ver os meus filhos a jogarem rugby. Onde gostaria de ter vivido? Conheço mais de 50 países e não conheço nenhum melhor do que Portugal para viver. Qual o seu herói? Depende dos dias, mas Gandhi e Mandela são os primeiros que me lembro quando o Jonas ou o Mitroglou não jogaram nem marcaram nenhum golo. Qual é o talento natural que não tem, mas gostaria de ter? Ter jeito para o ski e para o golfe (não tenho nenhum nem para um nem para outro). Qual o seu lema de vida? “Trata os outros como gostarias que te tratassem a ti.” Se há quem se possa orgulhar da carreira que traçou, José Theotónio é um deles. Nascido em Beja em 1964, licenciou-se em Administração e Gestão de Empresas pela Universidade Católica Portuguesa. Mal acaba o curso é convidado a leccionar nesta universidade, onde se manteve durante 13 anos. A par da paixão pelo ensino, José Theotónio foi gestor na Nutrinveste e a Lesilan, onde lançou o franchising das famosas lojas Lanidor. Entre 1990 e 93 foi adjunto do Secretário de Estado das Finanças e em 1994 é escolhido para Chefe de Gabinete do Secretário de Estado do Turismo. Em 2000 é convidado a integrar o Pestana Hotel Group onde desempenhou vários cargos até assumir as funções de CEO em 2015. É um dos rostos do sucesso do Pestana Hotel Group.

What is your biggest virtue? Patience, essential in many situations. What makes you get up in the morning? My love for life and my family. What are your favourite qualities in a man? Having the intelligence and dedication to achieve what one believes in. What are your favourite qualities in a woman? Intelligence and sensitivity. What do you appreciate most in a friend? True friendship without expecting anything in return. What is your idea of happiness? A family get together and a group of friends one can count on and have fun with. Then it’s having a job that one likes and the cherry on the cake is Benfica being champion. What is your idea of misery? Disease and other forms of impotence when faced with circumstances in life. What do you defend? That everyone should have at least one opportunity in life. What is your idea of freedom? True freedom is to be able to make a conscious decision not to affect the freedom of others. What would be a perfect death? A massive heart attack (preferably after the age of 80). If you could be someone else who would you like it to be? I’ve been who I am for 52 years so I can’t really imagine myself being anyone else. What are your favourite pleasures? A good feast with family and friends, a good sports match and watching my children play rugby. Where would you have liked to have lived? I’ve been to 50 different countries and none of them are better to live in than Portugal. Who is your hero? It depends, some days the first names that come to mind are Gandhi and Mandela when Jonas or Mitroglou haven’t played or scored any goals. What natural talent would you like to have which you don’t? To be good at skiing or golf (I’m useless at both of them). What is your motto in life? “Treat others as you would like to be treated yourself.” If there’s anyone who can be proud of his career, it’s José Theotónio. Born in Beja in 1964, he graduated in Business Administration and Management from the Portuguese Catholic University. As soon as he finished his course, he was invited to lecture at the university where he remained for 13 years. Besides his passion for teaching, José Theotónio was a director at the Nutrinveste and Lesilan companies. At the latter, he launched the first franchise units of the famous Lanidor clothing stores. Between 1990 and 93 he was assistant to the Secretary of State for Finance and in 1994 was chosen to be Chief of Staff of the Secretary of State for Tourism. In 2000 he was invited to join the Pestana Hotel Group where he held various positions until he became CEO in 2015. He is one of the people responsible for the success of the Pestana Hotel Group.
