Such is the case of London, one of our suggested destinations in this issue. One of Europe’s most vibrant capitals, Her Majesty’s home is one of those destinations where there’ll always be a reason to return. For many it’s on business, but the truth is that London has such a rich cultural offering that you absolutely must extend your stay, by a few days, so you can see how London is constantly reinventing itself. Philip Start, designer e fundador da alfaiataria Mr. Start, personifica tudo o que se esperaria de um cavalheiro britânico moderno. Casado com Brix Smith Start, a ex-guitarrista e compositora da The Fall, uma das bandas mais influentes e artisticamente credíveis da história da música britânica, eles são certamente um dos casais preferidos de Londres. Philip Start, designer and founder of the Mr Start tailoring line, epitomizes everything you would expect from a modern British gentleman. He’s quirky, well-travelled, considerate to others and has impeccable taste. Married to Brix Smith Start, the former guitarist and songwriter of the The Fall, one of the most influential and artistically credible bands in British music history, this is certainly one of London’s favourite couples. Philip founded Mr. Start to provide a fresh tailoring and modern luxury at an accessible price, providing both ready-to-wear clothing and a made to measure service for both men and women. His store is an absolute must if you are visiting London and can be found at Rivington Street in Shoreditch. Recently, whilst Brix was touring with her current band, Brix & the Extricated, Philip gave up some of his precious time to talk to WINK about some of his greatest passions, including his favourite haunts in London, travelling, and of course, the lovely Brix.

WINK: Qual é a viagem dos seus sonhos? Philip Start: Provavelmente a América do Sul, porque nunca estive lá. Gostaria de viajar por lá, há tantos lugares fascinantes que eu gostaria de ver.

WINK: What’s the trip of your dreams? Philip Start: Probably South America as I’ve never been there. I’d like to travel all the way through it as there are so many fascinating places I’d like to see there.

Qual é o seu destino de férias favorito? O destino em si não importa muito, desde que seja um lugar onde eu possa estar ativo, rodeado de desporto, desportos aquáticos como vela e esqui aquático ou esqui na neve. Eu gosto de férias de aventura.

What’s your favourite holiday destination? The destination itself doesn’t really matter that much as long as it’s somewhere I can be active, based around a sport – a water sport like sailing and waterskiing or snow skiing. I like adventure holidays.

Qual a primeira coisa que cada um de vocês faz quando chega a um quarto de hotel? Eu desfaço a mala, mas a Brix não, ela pode perfeitamente ter a mala feita quando regressamos!

What’s the first thing each of you does when you reach a hotel room? I unpack but Brix doesn’t unpack, she can still be packed when we leave!

Qual a primeira viagem que fizeram juntos? Para LA e depois para Joshua Tree e Palm Springs. A Brix é de LA e ainda morava lá quando nos conhecemos.

What was the first trip you went on together? To LA and then on to Joshua Tree and Palm Springs. Brix is from LA and she was still living there when we met.

Onde se encontraram pela primeira vez? Em 1995, num elevador no Harvey Nichols.

Where did you meet for the first time? In 1995, in a lift at Harvey Nichols.

Reconheceram-se? Não, não fazíamos ideia! Eu estava com alguns amigos e convidámo-la a tomar uma bebida conosco. Ela disseme que estava no negócio da música e fazia parte de uma banda, de que nunca tinha ouvido falar, e não dei muita importância. Ela sabia algumas coisas sobre mim, por causa de ter comprado um fato para o ex-marido numa loja que eu tinha chamada Woodhouse.

Did you recognise each other? No, we hadn’t a clue! I was with some friends and we invited her to come and have a drink with us. She told me she was in the music business and in a band I had never heard of so I took it with a pinch of salt. She did know a little about me as she had once bought a suit for her exhusband at a shop I used to own called Woodhouse. How do you prefer to travel? By car, plane, boat, rail or other? Boat would be my favourite although I like trains a lot. Although I enjoy driving I don’t like driving long distances, I don’t enjoy sitting stopped on a motorway. Overall, I like to travel, it’s part of the journey, to travel well.

Como prefere viajar? De carro, avião, barco, comboio ou outro? O barco seria o meu favorito, ainda que eu goste muito de comboios. Embora goste de conduzir, não gosto de conduzir longas distâncias, não gosto de estar sentado parado numa auto-estrada. Acima de tudo, gosto de viajar, faz parte do percurso, viajar bem.

What was the most beautiful place you visited together? I suppose it’s St. Barts, we used to go there a lot. Brix’s parents have an apartment there.

Qual foi o lugar mais bonito que já visitou? Suponho que seja St. Barts, costumamos ir muito lá. Os pais da Brix têm um apartamento lá. Onde se sentiu mais feliz no mundo? Eu acho que se te sentires satisfeito contigo mesmo, podes sentir-te feliz em qualquer lugar.

Is that where you got into sailing? No, I used to sail as a child, I had a house in the south of Spain and I used to keep a boat there. I’ve always been around boats.

No mundo, onde se sentem mais em casa? Bem, acho que é em Londres.

Where in the world have you felt happiest? I think if you feel content with yourself you can feel happy anywhere.

Onde é a vossa casa em Londres? Shoreditch. Vivíamos em Notting Hill, mas mudámo-nos para Shoreditch, pois queríamos viver nos arredores. Comprámos um loft com um jardim, numa cobertura, e realmente adoro.

Where in the world do you both feel most at home? Well, London I suppose.

O que faz um bom hotel? Acho que o serviço é muito importante. Nem sempre tem que ser luxuoso. Serviço atencioso e uma cama maravilhosa - acho que é o serviço, cama e comida boa e simples.

Where in London is home now? Shoreditch. We used to live in Notting Hill but we moved to Shoreditch as we wanted to live in a lateral space. So we bought a loft with a rooftop garden and I really love it there.

Quais são as suas cidades favoritas? Londres, Milão, Roma, Los Angeles e Florença. Eu acho que são estas as minhas cidades favoritas. Visitei muito Itália, conheço-a muito bem.

What makes a good hotel? I think service is very important. It doesn’t always have to be luxurious. Attentive service and a lovely bed - I think it’s about service, bed and good, simple food.

Quais os lugares mais inspiradores? O campo, o exterior e as montanhas. As cidades italianas são as mais inspiradoras, há uma espécie de magia em Itália.

What are your favourite cities? London, Milan, Rome, LA and Florence. I think they would be my favourite cities. I’ve visited Italy a lot and know it well.

Você já visitou Lisboa? Não, mas eu tenho lido muito sobre Lisboa e quando penso onde gostaria de viver, se não morasse em Londres, teria que estar perto do mar. Tenho a certeza que adoraria Lisboa.

What places inspire you the most? The countryside, outdoors and the mountains. Italian cities are the most inspirational ones, there’s a sort of magic about Italy.

What are your favourite places to eat out in London now? Are there any club-like restaurants? There’s the Hoi Polloi restaurant on Shoreditch High Street. Brix and I went there for an early dinner the other night and bumped into loads of people we knew, it felt a little club-like but not quite like in the 80s. We also enjoy many great small, recent restaurants in and around Hackney run by the owner/chef.

Onde costumavam sair para dançar nos anos 80? Havia muitos clubes, os anos 80 foram a época dos clubes. Havia o Tramp, estive lá numa destas noites e, curiosamente, está igual, é lindo de ver. Nós também costumávamos ir ao The Scotch, ao Morton’s e ao The Marque na Oxford Street, onde todas as bandas famosas costumavam tocar.

Where did you used to go out dancing in the 80s? There were lots of clubs, the 80s was the whole scene of clubs. There was Tramp, in fact I was there the other night and funnily enough it looks the same, it’s lovely to look at. We also used to go to The Scotch, Morton’s and The Marque on Oxford Street, where all the famous bands used to play.

Dos lugares que visitou, onde gostaria de voltar e quais jamais voltaria? Gosto de Ibiza, pois tem uma boa variedade de coisas diferentes. Há a vida noturna de Ibiza que todas as pessoas conhecem, mas existem também inúmeros sítios interessantes. Podes aventurar-te pelas rotas menos conhecidas e encontrar pequenos hotéis ou desfrutar da conhecida animação nocturna.

What places have you visited that you would like to go back to and those you wouldn’t want to go back to ever again? I like Ibiza as it has a very good variety of different things, the Ibiza nightlife that people know but it also has lots of little cute places. You can go off the beaten track and find little hotels or do the whole night thing. My ideal holiday is spending the day doing some sports and all I want to do after that is to fall asleep eating my food! Enjoying a glass of wine and some simple food, sitting by the beach, that’s perfection for me! The hippy-chic beach style really appeals to me. Where I wouldn’t want to go back to is Marbella, I used to go there a lot but I haven’t been back there for 20 years and have no desire to go there again. The Costa del Sol has been ruined although I like Spain, the Spanish food, I like the whole environment.

Como são as suas férias favoritas? As minhas férias ideais é passar o dia a fazer alguns desportos e tudo o que eu quero depois é adormecer, comendo a minha própria comida! Apreciar uma taça de vinho e alguma comida simples, sentado à beira da praia, é a perfeição para mim! O estilo de praia hippychic realmente agrada-me. Onde eu não gostaria de voltar era para Marbella, costumava ir muito lá, mas não vou há 20 anos e não tenho vontade de regressar. A Costa del Sol foi arruinada, embora eu goste de Espanha, da comida espanhola e de todo o ambiente.

What was your craziest travel experience? When I was about nineteen years old, five of us drove all the way around North America. I suppose that was pretty crazy! We drove about 12,000 miles. I immigrated to Canada when I was about eighteen with my friends, not my parents, and we decided to go on this trip all together and we drove from Toronto, all the way round and back again. It took us about two months. It was amazing, we went down to Key West, Texas, into Mexico, up the Californian coast then back across the Rockies.

Qual foi a sua experiência de viagem mais louca? Quando tinha cerca de dezanove anos, cinco de nós conduzimos todo o caminho pela América do Norte. Foi realmente louco! Conduzimos cerca de 12 mil milhas. Emigrei para o Canadá quando tinha cerca de dezoito anos com os meus amigos, não com os meus pais, e decidimos ir nesta viagem todos juntos e conduzimos até Toronto, e depois o caminho de regresso. Demorámos cerca de dois meses. Foi incrível, descemos a Key West, fomos pelo Texas, México, subimos a costa californiana e voltámos pelas Rocky Mountains.

How long were you in Canada? Two and a half years. I love Canada, we have friends who live in Toronto, who we went to stay with a few years ago. They have a house on their own little island on a lake. It’s like the Hamptons, “Hamptons on lake!”

Quanto tempo esteve no Canadá? Dois anos e meio. Adoro o Canadá, temos amigos que moram em Toronto, com quem ficamos há uns anos atrás. Eles têm uma casa na sua própria pequena ilha, num lago. É como os Hamptons, “Hamptons no lago!”

O epicentro dessa contracultura era, indiscutivelmente, o World’s End no número 430 da King’s Road, sob a égide de Tommy Roberts a sua loja “Mr Freedom”, estabelecida durante os loucos anos 60, terá sido herdada anos mais tarde pelo Malcolm McLaren e Vivienne Westwood, tornando-se “Let it Rock”, “Seditionaries”, “SEX”, e conhecida hoje em dia como “World’s End”. Uma mistura inebriante de música e cultura underground com técnicas pioneiras no trabalho de roupa vintage dos anos 50 foi conduzida por Westwood, que acabou por mudar o mundo da moda para sempre. The centre of this counterculture was arguably none other than ‘World’s End’ at 430 King’s Road under the patronage of Tommy Roberts – whose swinging sixties shop ‘Mr Freedom’ was later inherited by Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood and became ‘Let it Rock’, ‘Seditionaries’, ‘SEX’ and its current guise: ‘World’s End’. A heady mix of music and underground culture as well as a seminal bricolage technique reworking vintage fifties clothes was pioneered by Westwood and changed the face of fashion forever. The vintage-meets-rock-n-roll approach is the true hallmark of Chelsea fashion. During the 60’s cult shop Biba opened on Abingdon Road and later moved to High Street Kensington. Its unique fusion of art deco, forties silhouettes and unabashed sixties psychedellia set the neighbourhood alight with youthful energy. In the seventies – the rock ‘n’ roll cognoscenti were shopping at ‘Granny Takes A Trip’ – with regular clients including the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Lou Reed, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. Today, fashion has moved on and given way to the ultra-chic and internationally renowned boutiques on Sloane Street, in Knightsbridge and in Notting Hill, yet some Aladdin caves of these bygone eras remain and beckon any true fashion fanatic. Vivienne Westwood’s ‘World’s End’ - remodeled as a wrecked buccaneer’s ship is a nod to Westwood’s endless fascination with pirates, and is complete with a clock on its façade that winds backwards. Inside, Westwood’s iconic pieces hewn in her beloved tartan, her groundbreaking customized vintage t-shirts, pirate boots, and new romantic blouses once immortalized by Adam Ant fill this atmospheric haunt. You can imagine Jerry Hall wafting through the corridors as she once did.

Keep an eye out on the King’s Road for the frequent vintage fairs hosted by ‘Frock Me!’ at the iconic Chelsea Town Hall – once the setting for the ‘King of the King’s Road’ Ossie Clarke’s most celebrated fashion shows. You may well find yourself stalking his definitive, soigne crepe gowns amongst other gems. Portobello Road – the spine of Notting Hill – whose own history of punk and counter culture is as prolific as King’s Road – does not disappoint, and was in fact London’s first ever antiques market. ‘One of a Kind’, ‘Rellik’ and ‘Rokit’ as well as a slew of incredible vintage resellers often found on Portobello Green offer up treasures from the London Fashion scene and are favourites amongst the fashion cognoscenti including Tom Ford, and style icon Kate Moss whose legendary party outfits have been known to have been sourced here. On King’s Road, ‘The Shop at the Bluebird’ next to the iconic Conran shop is a delight. This cabinet of curiosities, with its regular pop ups ranging from the best eco fashion brands to Latin American gems which sit along its chic international brands and beauty bar is a must. No princess feels complete without her glass slipper, and possibly the best shoemaker in the world and his boutique reside in Chelsea and have done since the seventies. This designer is of course Manolo Blahnik whose shoes were infamously worn by Bianca Jagger as she entered Studio 54 on a white horse in 1977, and have been imortalised in ‘Sex and the City’ as well as his dear friend Princess Diana herself. Lisboa ainda tem um olhar desconfiado perante aquilo que é novo e diferente, Londres abraça a diferença, o estranho.” Quando compara as duas cidades, é inevitável falar dos custos de vida. “Em Londres podes ganhar muito dinheiro mas pode-se facilmente gastar na mesma proporção. Os transportes, habitação, restauração são por vezes exorbitantes. Há sempre algo para fazer, estão sempre coisas “imperdíveis” a acontecer, mas por outro lado deixa em ti um permanente sentimento de frustração e impotência porque não podes ir a todas, em Lisboa isso não acontece tanto, muito facilmente consegues marcar presença nos eventos mais importantes do momento. Apesar da média do salário nacional ser baixo, Lisboa não te leva à bancarrota”, defende Mina. Dotada de uma energia contagiante, Mina Andala assume-se como “lutadora por natureza” e por herança genética dos pais, que também não tiveram medo de um dia, cheios de esperança, deixarem o seu país e irem para Portugal. O projeto deles continua a ser o seu: “é ser feliz, é um grande projeto e o processo apesar de difícil, é fascinante. E para isso só há que manter a esperança em ação, porque como dizia Sartre, sem esperança só nos resta a náusea e o desespero”.

There’s always something to do, there are always things going on that are not to be missed but on the other hand it leaves you with a permanent feeling of frustration and impotence because you cannot do it all. This isn’t the case in Lisbon, you can easily make an appearance at all the most important events. Although the national average salary is low, Lisbon won’t lead you to bankruptcy”, according to Mina. Blessed with a contagious energy, Mina Andala describes herself as “a fighter by nature”, thanks to the genetic inheritance of her parents who were also fearless and who one day left their country and went to Portugal, full of hope. Their project continues also to be hers: “to be happy, it’s a huge project and the process, whilst difficult, is fascinating. To achieve that happiness one must stay hopeful because as Sartre said, without hope all we are left with is nausea and despair”.

Twenty kilometres from the Pousada is Ovar, an open-air tile museum where the small ceramic fragments bring life and colour to the city. Contact the Tourist Office to book a guided walking tour (minimum six people), which lasts about an hour and is completely free of charge.

A Torreira conserva a tranquilidade de uma vila ainda pouco conhecida pelos turistas, mas com um potencial imenso para quem almeja passar uns dias de férias. Animada no verão com a presença de jovens das terras vizinhas, no inverno nem sempre o tempo é o mais acolhedor. Ainda assim, todas as estações são boas para uma visita, pois não falta o que fazer. As ciclovias existentes por todo o concelho incitam a um passeio de bicicleta. Torreira still enjoys all the tranquility of a village which has yet to be discovered by tourists but with huge potential for those longing for a holiday. It’s lively during the summer, when young people from surrounding towns flock to Torreira. In the winter, even when the weather is not always quite as welcoming, there are still plenty good reasons to visit it. The bike paths found throughout the municipality encourage a bicycle ride.

Pedro Azevedo O meu pai dizia: “na Torreira, quando não há sol, comemse enguias…”. O meu dia, quando estou de férias, pode começar bem cedo, às 6h30, a ver o nascer do sol na ria. A ria não mexe e tudo o que eu vejo é a tranquilidade deste sítio maravilhoso, pintado de uma cor alaranjada e que é única no meu país. Depois vou até ao mar, passando pela padaria Veras para comprar pão quente - os famosos bicos para o pequenoalmoço. Ainda é cedo para ir para a praia, por isso vou dar um passeio de bicicleta na ciclovia sempre junto à ria, ou então caminhar para a Reserva das Dunas de S. Jacinto. Ui! Já fiz o meu exercício físico e ainda são 10h00. Vou até ao Guedes, uma esplanada ótima sobre a ria, onde bebo um café e como um pastel tradicional “Monte Branco”. A ria dista do mar apenas 1 km, percurso que faço sempre na minha bicicleta. O mar não está ruim, os pescadores saíram, e eu vou ver a chegada da rede (Arte Chávega). Como não consigo estar quieto, também ajudo na faina e, quando tenho sorte, oferecem-me um saco cheio de carapaus.

My father used to say: “In Torreira, you eat eels when the sun isn’t out...”. When I’m on holiday, my day sometimes starts as early as 6.30am, watching the sunrise on the Ria. The Ria is motionless and all I can see is the tranquillity of this wonderful place, painted in orange, the only place where this occurs in my country. I then go down to the sea, stopping off at Vera’s bakery on the way to buy some freshly made bread - the famous “bicos” for breakfast. It’s still too early to go to the beach, so I go for a bike ride along the cycle lane next to the river, or walk to the San Jacinto Dunes Reserve. Wow! I’ve already done my physical exercise and it’s still only 10:00am. I go to “Guedes”, a great café with a terrace overlooking the Ria, where I have a coffee and a traditional “Monte Branco” pastry. The Ria is just 1 km from the sea, along a route which I always take when I’m on my bike. The sea doesn’t look bad, the fishermen have gone out to fish and I’m going to watch the pulling in of the net ritual (Arte Chávega). Since I can never sit still, I’ll help them out with this task and if I’m lucky, they’ll give me a bag full of horse mackerel.

Na praia revejo os meus amigos. Alguns vão surfar, mas o vento está a levantar, portanto vou descer até à ria (sempre de bicicleta) e aparelhar o barco para dar um passeio à vela. Não sem antes, no caminho, fazer uma pequena paragem no restaurante Avenida Praia. Bebo um fino e como umas cabras (camarão da ria), mas continuo com fome. Desço mais um pouco e vou à Concha comer um cachorro especial - almoço que remato com um gelado de máquina sempre igual àqueles que eu comia ainda em criança na Praia do Monte Branco. Hoje está vento e aproveito para velejar, mas se o vento cair posso ir à pesca (robalos, douradas, enguias). No meio da ria e em frente à Pousada, há uma ilha em forma de lua, que aparece quando a maré está a vazar. Dou um mergulho e o sol queima muito por causa do iodo das algas. São 18h30 e, como sempre, ainda não parei. Subo novamente até ao mar, pois hoje no Café da Praia há um sunset com um Dj conhecido que vem de Lisboa para animar o fim de dia. Regresso a minha casa, uma das mais antigas da Torreira, para me preparar para o jantar. Hoje apetece-me caldeirada de enguias. Vou à Varina que tem uma vista linda sobre a ria. Grande jantar, não posso ir já para a cama! Vou beber um copo e ouvir um pouco de música aos bares da praia. Que dia fantástico! Estou aqui de férias há um mês e meio e ainda não me cansei. Amanhã tenho um passeio de barco Moliceiro pelos canais da ria e, ao final do dia, vou à inauguração da exposição de pintura e escultura da minha amiga Maria Oliveira Pinto sobre o tema Marias do Mar. É uma canseira esta vida boa na Torreira, apareçam...!

I catch up with old friends on the beach. Some will surf, but the wind is picking up, so I go down to the Ria (on my bike, always) and prepare the boat to set sail. Not without making a pit stop on my way, at the Avenida Praia Restaurant. I have a beer with some “cabras” (shrimp from the Ria) but I’m still hungry. I go a little further down to “Concha” to eat a special hotdog, my lunch, which I always finish having the same machine ice-cream that I used to have as a child at the Praia do Monte Branco. It’s windy today but if the wind drops I can go fishing for sea bass, sea bream and eels. In the middle of the Ria and in front of the Pousada, there’s a moon-shaped island that appears when the tide is going out. I go for a dip in the sea and the sun burns my skin because of the iodine in the seaweed. It’s 6:30pm, and as always, I haven’t stopped. I go back down to the seaside because today there’s a sunset party at the beach café where a well-known DJ will be coming from Lisbon to liven up the end of the day. I go back home, one of the oldest houses in Torreira, to get ready for dinner. Today I fancy an eel stew. I go to “Varina”, which has a marvellous view of the river. Great dinner, I can’t go to bed yet! I’m going to have a drink and listen to some music at the beach bars. What a fantastic day! I’ve been here for a month and a half and I’m still not bored. Tomorrow I’m going on a boat trip, up the Ria’s canals on one of the typical Moliceiros. Later, at the end of the day, I’ll be going to the opening of the painting and sculpture exhibition of a friend of mine, Maria Oliveira Pinto, on the theme “Marias do Mar”. There’s never a dull moment in Torreira, come and see for yourself!

Regina Bastos Deputada para a Assembleia da República Member of the Portuguese Parliament

Regina Bastos nasceu na freguesia de Veiros. O seu pai, médico, dava consultas nos concelhos de Estarreja e da Murtosa, e foi entre estas duas localidades que passou a sua infância. Recorda com saudade as férias na Torreira, terra inspiradora e cenário da convergência de uma quantidade de famílias que todos os anos voltavam na altura do verão. Casou-se com dezassete anos na Pousada da Ria, como de resto a maior parte dos seus oito irmãos, pois “este era o sítio favorito e mais bonito para se celebrarem grandes momentos familiares”. Iniciou a sua carreira como advogada na Murtosa, onde mais tarde e de forma inesperada viria a ter a sua primeira experiência política. Cumpriu dois mandatos como Deputada Europeia em Bruxelas e foi Secretária de Estado do Governo de Pedro Santana Lopes. Em Outubro de 2015 é eleita deputada para a Assembleia da República, missão que continua a desempenhar actualmente. A semana vive-a em Lisboa, mas os fins de semana são passados na Torreira. “O meu porto de abrigo.” A turbulência da vida política fica para trás quando chega à calmaria da sua terra, que é o local onde encontra a família e, nas suas palavras, “aspira energia”. Novamente surgem as recordações: “O Monte Branco era a praia para onde as famílias com crianças iam à tarde e onde aprendi a nadar. Havia a D. Rosinha, que vendia os melhores sorvetes da Torreira, de chocolate e baunilha, e que agora encontramos na Concha.”

Regina Bastos was born in the Parish of Veiros. Her father, who was a doctor, practiced in the municipalities of Estarreja and Murtosa and it was between these two places that she spent her childhood. She reminisces about holidays spent in Torreira, an inspiring land where a number of families return to every year, getting together in the summer. She got married when she was seventeen year’s old at the Pousada da Ria, as did most of her eight siblings as “this was the favourite and most beautiful place to celebrate special family moments.” She began her career as a lawyer in Murtosa, where she later, unexpectedly, had her first experience in politics. She served two terms as a Member of the European Parliament in Brussels and was Secretary of State for the Government of Pedro Santana Lopes. In October 2015, she was elected member of the Portuguese Parliament, a mission that she continues to carry out today. She lives in Lisbon during the week but weekends are spent in Torreira. “My safe haven.” The turbulence of political life is left behind when she gets to her peaceful homeland. This is where her family is and, in her own words, it’s a place that “radiates positive energy.” Again the memories come flooding back: “Monte Branco was the beach where families with children went to in the afternoon and it was where I learned to swim. There was ‘D. Rosinha’, who sold the best chocolate and vanilla ice-cream in Torreira, which we now buy at Concha.”

O café Guedes, a discoteca O Barquinho e o Maribar não podem deixar de ser referidos: “Foram sítios importantes por terem sido emblemáticos aqui da Praia da Torreira, que nos mobilizaram a todos e marcaram várias gerações”. Gosta de viajar. Já conheceu o Chile, a Índia, a China... e gostava de visitar Buenos Aires, Tóquio e Quioto. Porém, não consegue eleger uma viagem de sonho: “o meu sítio é a minha casa e a Torreira é o paraíso. Esta terra tem uma energia especial. Eu pego na minha bicicleta e gosto de percorrer as ciclovias, fazendo ainda justiça a uma tradição dos murtoseiros, que sempre se deslocaram de bicicleta nas suas vidas. É uma imagem de marca da Murtosa.” No inverno também se vivia a Torreira. A Pousada era o local onde os amigos se encontravam e jogavam bridge. E, diz Regina, que tem sido sempre assim... “Este estabelecimento dos anos sessenta do século passado, com uma localização privilegiada sobre a Ria de Aveiro, foi, ao longo destas décadas, sempre acompanhando as famílias nas suas gerações”. E apetece sempre regressar.

‘Café Guedes’, the ‘O Barquinho’ nightclub and ‘Maribar’ are also worth mentioning: “They were important as they were landmarks here at Praia da Torreira, they brought us all together and marked several generations”. She loves travelling. She’s been to Chile, India, China... and would love to visit Buenos Aires, Tokyo and Kyoto. However, she finds it hard to choose a trip of her dreams: “My place is home and Torreira is paradise. This land has a special energy. I get on my bike and take the cycle paths, doing justice to the tradition of the “Murtoseiros”, who have always got around by bike. It’s a Murtosa trademark.” Torreira was also enjoyed in the winter. The Pousada was where friends met and played bridge. And according to Regina, it has always been like this. “This 1960’s establishment, with a privileged location on the Ria de Aveiro, has been a part of the different generations of families for decades and I always feel like coming back.”

Set in a Nature Reserve, only 5% of the resort is construction area, the remaining 95% is a Nature Reserve and Protected Green Area. With an area of 100 hectares, dominated by the peninsula’s native species, this resort offers direct access to an incredible golden sandy beach, indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts, paddle courts, gymnasiums and saunas. Projetado para dez anos, o eco-resort, devido ao enorme sucesso que alcançou, será terminado em apenas oito anos. A quinta e última fase do projeto, designada Pestana Eco Village, que inclui a construção das Pine Villas e das Beach Villas, chega ao fim no primeiro semestre de 2018, representando assim a última oportunidade para ser proprietário de uma villa no paraíso. 120

As soon as you get to the eco-resort, you realize the projectâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s level of commitment to sustainability, guaranteed throughout the different phases of the project. Originally scheduled to take ten years to complete, due to its enormous success, the ecoresort will be completed in just eight years. The fifth and final phase of the project, called the Eco Village Pestana, which includes the construction of the Pine Villas and Beach Villas, will be finalized during the first half of 2018 and is thus the last opportunity to own a villa in paradise.

Rita Kallerhoff Nascida em Colónia, Alemanha, no auge da Segunda Guerra Mundial, a artista Rita Kallerhoff tem revelado o seu colorido mundo imaginário um pouco por todo o lado. O seu percurso de aprendizagem passou por escolas como a Kolner Werkschuler, onde estudou teatro, ou o Fine Arts and the Art Students, em Nova Iorque. Pelo meio, escolheu Paris para viver, na década de 60. O seu trabalho já passou pela Alemanha,Espanha e Nova York, marca presença em muitas importantes coleções particulares, e foi reproduzido no livro Living in Morocco, publicado pela Taschen. Na sua última estadia em Portugal desafiamola a respirar a serenidade de Tróia e Rita Kallerhoff aceitou de imediato.

Born in Cologne, Germany, at the height of World War II, the artist Rita Kallerhoff has revealed her colourful imaginary world, a little all over the globe. Her learning path included schools such as the Kolner Werkschuler, where she studied theatre, as well as the Fine Arts and the Art Students, in New York. In the 60s she chose to live in Paris. Her work has been on show in Germany, Spain and New York, and has featured in many important private collections and in the book Living in Morocco, published by Taschen. During her recent trip to Portugal, we challenged her to breathe in all the serenity of Tróia and Rita Kallerhoff accepted the invitation immediately.
