April 2011

Message from the President By Jerry Farmer, 94.5 ROXY, Chamber President

F

ifty Years. That’s how long the Lacey Chamber has been going strong. Through thick and thin, numerous bubbles, downturns, recessions, and booms; the Lacey Chamber has been a continuing and consistent advocate for business in our community. Our motto, “Your Premier Business Resource,” resonates today as much as ever.

The world has changed a lot since 1961. For one thing, gas is no longer 31 cents a gallon. Back then, cigarettes used to be cheaper than cigarette lighters. And all our phones were harnessed directly to wall outlets. No one had ever heard of a beeper, much less a smartphone. The really techno-fortunate folk were lucky if they didn’t have a party line. (For you younger members, “party lines” were not social networking apps to promote flashmobs at a local hangout, you actually shared a phone line with your neighbors.) Hearing about your juicy neighborhood gossip was easier than an FBI phone tap. The Lacey Chamber has always understood that small business helps build communities. Fifty years ago, Lacey wasn’t even an incorporated city yet—that wouldn’t come until 1966. South Sound Center, which really put Lacey business on the map and was one of the first covered shopping malls in the country, wouldn’t be constructed by Bob Blume until 1966 either. Back then, folks had the primitive notion that having a roof to protect against the rain as you strolled from shop to shop was a good idea. The weather-ignoring concept of isolated big box stores was still a dream of the fledgling northwest umbrella industry.

April 2011

Many of our local business icons had yet to be. If you can believe it, Dirty Dave’s Pizza Parlor hadn’t come to town. That wouldn’t happen until 11 years later, in 1972, when Dirty himself and a punk 19-year-old kid from Redlands, California, would serve up the first cashew-encrusted pizza. That punk kid was me, and I have been energized by the Lacey business community ever since. It has given me enormous opportunity and the environment in which that opportunity can be realized and thrive. We have the entrepreneurial spirit in Lacey and are proud of it. Big brother Olympia always looked a little askance at our brashness. But hey, us little brothers know how to get attention and get things done. And we grow up. We may struggle for identity, but that struggle makes us stronger, our insights keener, and sharpens our skills to make the best of lean times too. We appreciate how to have a little fun while we’re doing it. So make sure and come to our Forum on April 6 and enjoy a little of that energy and fun. (Make your reservation online to save money.) Our featured speaker will be Ken Balsley, who’ll be giving us a great presentation on the history of the Lacey Chamber, which is the focus of our soon-tobe-released 50th anniversary edition of our Community Resource Guide. Ken is our official Chamber historian, and he knows his stuff and how to deliver it in a memorable manner. My hope is we’ll learn a little more about how we came to be what we are and how those things can make our future even better. The more things change, the more they stay the same. The principles of our organization—to come together and network, to promote growth and opportunity, and to advocate for small business; the driving force of a healthy economy and community—are still vital and important.

Flip the Switch to Green Power By Josh Monti and Andrew Rose, Owners, Classic Winemakers

L

iving and working in western Washington is something we all treasure, and just like you, I’m proud to call Lacey home. Here in the Pacific Northwest we benefit from a distinctive balance—smart and innovative people and unmatched environmental beauty. It is no surprise that helping to keep our unique home and our planet clean, cool, and vibrant is a mission many of us hold dear. That’s why I’m proud to share that the team at Classic Winemakers supports clean, green, renewable energy projects in our region simply by paying our electric bill. We’ve opted to participate in Puget Sound Energy’s voluntary Green Power Program. It is a simple way to direct funds to independent renewable energy producers, many of whom are local, which helps our planet and our economy. It costs us just a little bit more, but the huge impact is worth it. Still, I’m not satisfied with just our commitment. I want all of us to do more! That’s why I’m asking you to join us—along with the cities of Lacey and Olympia, Intercity Transit, Thurston Energy, and thousands of residents and businesses in our area—to “flip the switch to green power.â€? Flip the Switch is our call-to-action in 2011. If we in Lacey along with our neighbors in Olympia increase participation by at least 1,011 residents and businesses in PSE’s Green Power Program, PSE will provide a $20,000 grant for a solar project right here in Lacey (Olympia will earn a grant too). 4,500 of our friends and neighbors in Lacey and Olympia are already doing so and you can too by going to PSE.com/Flip. Doing the right thing is really easy. Here are some important things to know to help you make your decision to join PSE’s Green Power Program: • PSE does not make a profit on this program • The program funds renewable projects like wind, biogas, biomass waste-to-energy, and solar

electricity would cost about $10–$12 additional per month, and it reduces carbon dioxide emissions equivalent to not driving a car for over a year • The program is certified by Green-e Energy, the nation’s leading voluntary certification program for renewable energy • Approximately 30,000 PSE customers currently participate in the Green Power Program Let’s go Lacey! Let’s Flip the Switch to Green Power and earn the solar project grant for our community. In doing so, we dramatically increase the demand for renewable energy projects in our region and show that we are leaders in creating a sustainable future. Lacey, we can meet and even exceed this challenge! Please visit PSE.com/Flip or call a PSE Energy Advisor at 800-562-1482, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You can even text FLIP to 83936 and enroll from your smartphone! Classic Winemakers is a locally owned and operated micro winery where you can “experience the art of winemaking.â€? Stop in to taste some of our wines, make a batch of your own, or buy a bottle to take home and enjoy. We are located on the corner of Ruddell Road and Lacey Boulevard. www.classicwinemakers.com

Arrow Head Adopt-A-Unit Program By Carlene Joseph, Harborstone Credit Union, Military Affairs Committee Chair

T

he Lacey Chamber, the City of Lacey, and the Lacey Subchapter of the Association of the United States Army are making good progress for the Arrow Head Adopt-A-Unit program to support the 3rd Stryker Brigade. Once we’ve connected all of the interested businesses with their selected units, we expect to have a “meet and greet session at the Lacey City Hall. This is where the partnership will begin and continue to form for a long time to come. As mentioned in previous articles, please let me know directly at carlene.joseph@ harborstone.com, if your business is willing and able to adopt a unit. Remember what I said before, the extent of how much you participate depends on you and your assigned unit. I want to personally thank the City of Lacey, Lacey Subchapter of the Association of the United States Army, Harborstone Credit Union, America’s Credit Union, the Ram, the Northern Thurston County School District, and the Lacey Chamber for making this program happen. I also want to give a shout out to the previous commander of the Western Air Defense Sector, Col. Paul Gruver, at McChord

Finally, I want to thank the wonderful Chiefs of the 62nd Airlift and the 446th Airlift Wings for promoting me to “Honorary Command Chief. I can’t think of a better honor and I’m truly humbled by your gesture. Also, I have to commend the fine Airmen of McChord Field and the Soldiers of Lewis-Main for their hard work in helping with transporting and taking care of the victims of the Japan Tsunami. I’m constantly amazed at the good work you all do each and every day. Our next Military Affairs meeting is on Tuesday, April 12 at 7:30 a.m. at the Hawks Prairie Restaurant. Dan Penrose from the City of Lakewood will be our guest speaker. Dan will share information about the six recommendations on the region’s JBLM Growth Coordination Plan. The six recommendations address new ways of collaboration, methods to expand access to information and services, and the recognition of JBLM as a center of technical and economic excellence. Don Ham will also join us to provide more information about Military One Source. I hope to see you there!

Networking on the Golf Course Submitted by Kevin Myers, General Manager, The Golf Course at Hawk’s Prairie

A

s networking and relationship building continue to grow in importance for the business professional, many are finding or re-discovering the game of golf. A round of golf offers a chance to learn about clients on a more personal basis and, after two plus hours, your client will have had a more memorable experience than a brief lunch or ten minute cup of coffee. While this gives you a major opportunity to make an impression, there are several things you should and shouldn’t do. As with any client meeting, be prepared! For the average golfer or better, make reservations well in advance and let the booking agent know you will be entertaining clients. At the Golf Club at Hawks Prairie our team will take time to add some personal touches to make a better impression. Remember you are entertaining and you should know the facility as if it is your home. At Hawks Prairie we aim to be an extension of your hospitality. Arrive early and prepay for everything or start a tab as this keeps you from pulling out your wallet in front of the client. Keep in mind that if your client is an avid golfer he or she may arrive very early to warm up. If you are just starting out as a golfer, seek help from a PGA Professional. At Hawks Prairie we offer a five-week class, not only teaching the funda-mentals of the golf swing, but also

showing new students the basics of the game including basic rules & etiquette, where to stand, and even simply how to tee up a golf ball. Once you’ve completed the instruction series, keep at it; you don’t want to forget all that you have learned. At Hawks Prairie we have both a men’s and ladies’ club that play weekly, many of whom are also local business leaders. As for networking golf, start small and play in a charity scramble or chamber event such as the Lacey Chamber Golf Classic on June 3. See Networking on page 11

Sp on so Many more sponsorships for our rsh ips 13th Annual Golf Classic Tourney are Av available such as the “Golf with a Pro.” This is a ail ab great sponsorship that places Kevin Myers on your le! team and includes your registration fees. You are treated like a VIP with a fully stocked cart for the day of the tourney and one hour lesson with Kevin on a mutually agreed upon date and time! Call today! 491-4141

he Lacey Chamber of Commerce is pleased to welcome Kelley Hernandez Hammeren to our staff as Membership/ Sales Representative. Many of you know Kelley from her work in our community in various positions, as a Chamber volunteer, and as a former Chamber Board member. Kelley brings experience, enthusiasm, and a deep sense of commitment to our greater Lacey area in this position. Kelley has made many contacts in her work with the Chamber, and she continues to promote the value of Chamber membership. Please help welcome Kelley. April 2011

Networking (continued from page 7) While on the course it is important to remember one thing; you are here to build a relationship and gain trust. Your behavior on the course will say quite a lot about you and your business so keep everything in moderation. What you wear will also say a great deal about you so know the dress code and look like someone you would like to do business with. Also, have a few stories in mind as it helps ease any quiet spots during the day, but save the golf jokes for later. Do talk about business, but let your clients initiate that conversation and remember deals usually don’t get finalized on the golf course. Follow up after the day with a call or a thank you card, you have both made the investment so remain top of mind.

At the end of the day golf has given you and your client a common experience and, more often than not, a golfing partner for future events. You can use golf even more in your business by combining meetings and team building exercises at the golf course where our Hawks Prairie professionals are happy to arrange private group instruction. At the very least, celebrate your team’s success with a leisurely round of nine or eighteen holes and enjoy a meal at the clubhouse at the end of the day.
