Message from the President By Jeff Powell, President

T

here are a few people I would like to acknowledge for their hard work this year. Mike Harris, a current board member, has been selected by past president Patrick Davidson and me to be Treasurer; if that is not enough, he has agreed to be the Finance Committee Chair and is doing a superb job. We have formed a fund-raising committee headed up by board member Tony Salas of Anchor Bank. Tony is working on ways to find more sustainable income for the Chamber and provide long-term membership benefits to our members. I know he has several great ideas and we will soon be introducing them to the membership. Angelique Wilson is the new Human Resource Chair. Angelique is the owner of Professional Temp Staffing Agency and has a strong background in this area. She will be working on updating our policies and procedures. I want to point out how fortunate the Chamber is to have a first rate board of directors and executive officers leading the way for the Chamber. Please take a look at the Community Resource Guide or the Lacey Chamber web site to see who they are. I am impressed and I am sure you will be too.

Raj Manhas is the new superintendent for the North Thurston Public Schools. He has experienced a great deal of success in the past working in the public school system. We are very pleased to have him join us at the May Forum to share what changes, goals, and objectives he has in store for the District. Raj has an impressive resume that goes beyond K-12 education. Before he became superintendent for the Seattle Public Schools, Raj helped erase a $35 million budget deficit as their Chief Operations officer. Prior to that, he had a successful banking career and put his engineering and people skills to work as Director of Operations for Seattle Public Utilities. We look forward to hearing what ideas Raj has for the future of North Thurston Public Schools.

Social Media and Business—A Friendly Concept By Corey Lopardi, Pardiman Productions

N

ever before have businesses had so many ways to get their message in front of customers. It can be overwhelming trying to navigate all the social networking, blogging, video and microblogging sites available. To succeed businesses need a basic understanding of their options and what they mean to their success. Social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, Biznik and others put businesses in the middle of their customers’ conversations and make them friends. These sites also give businesses the opportunity to promote events, launch new products and services

directly to customers, get immediate feedback, and direct friends (customers) to their websites.

Blogging offers an excellent opportunity for customer education and retention. A well-created business blog can turn one-time customers into dedicated fans awaiting a business’ posts and expertise in its field. Video sharing sites like YouTube and Vimeo give businesses the opportunity to engage, inform and entertain customers. The same video can be posted across multiple sites, linked in blogs, or direct emailed to customers.

Microblogging with Twitter is quickly becoming the It form of social media, but Twitter is not for every business. It requires a constant management of the information stream that is necessary to keep customers following your business. Social media can be many things depending on a business’ needs. When used properly as part of a larger marketing plan it can have an amazing effect on brand recognition and loyalty. Just remember when it comes to social media customers come and go but friends are forever.

Procurement Technical Assistance Center Receives Outstanding Center Award

T

he Washington State Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) was recently awarded the Association of PTAC 2010 Outstanding Center Award. This award is given to a Statewide PTAC program to identify and showcase PTAC organizations that operate at the highest level of professionalism and consistently demonstrate best practices. The success of the Washington State PTAC is largely attributed to quality subcenters like the center located in Thurston County. The Thurston County center is located in Lacey at the Thurston Economic Development Council and serves Clark, Cowlitz, Lewis, Skamania & Thurston Counties. The Washington PTAC was nominated by Daucey Brewington, Program Manager, United Indians Native TPAC. Mr. Brewington acknowledged the involvement of several of the PTAC staff who have served on national committees. Tiffany

Scroggs, who represents the local PTAC program serves on the education committee along with Erin Nielsen, PTAC Program Director, who serves on the performance review committee. “The counselors employed by the Washington PTAC have the knowledge, experience and motivation to provide outstanding client support,” said Brewington. “What has impressed me most is the depth and breadth of the information available and the willingness of the counselors to research information for their clients.”

The PTAC program is supported by the Department of Defense and matched by local dollars. It exists to assist the Washington State business community in all areas of selling to the federal, state, and local government. PTAC offers free professional one-on-one technical assistance with bid/proposal review, marketing advice and quality procurement/ contracting training classes, govern-

ment procurement related seminars and conferences.

Are You In It — To Win It? By Chris Widener

H

place!

ave you ever heard this? “It isn’t whether you win or lose. It is how you play the game.” I am sure you have. But do you know who said it? Some guy who came in second

You see, I have a problem with that statement. It presupposes, or at least strongly suggests that winning and playing the game “right” are mutually exclusive propositions. Perhaps we ought to have this as our goal as we pursue success: We want to win, while playing the game right! I totally disagree with the statement that we should win at all costs. Instead, we should do everything good that we can to win at this game we call life. And we ought also do all that we can to help others win. With all of that... here are some thoughts on being in the game—to win!

Any “game” worth playing is a game worth pursuing a win in.

If I get into a game, I play to win. What nobility is there is playing like a slacker? What virtue is purposeful mediocrity? None! I live my life to be a winner—spiritually, financially, physically, emotionally, relationally—every area of my life! If it is worth doing, it is worth playing for the win!

It is good to win.

We live in an age now where people have reacted to sore winners by saying that we shouldn’t strive for winning. Many of our schools have abandoned the idea of competition, and our educational scores show that. Kudos to all of the teachers out there who still tell their kids that they can be winners! It is good and noble to win! It is something to strive for. It is good to push ourselves, to stretch, and reach for victory. It is a grand thing to want to win!

Pursue the win, but help others achieve all that they can as well! There doesn’t have to be a loser in life.

Yes, in teamed competition, there are always losers (but more on that in a bit), but in life, you can all win! We can all strive for the best and give it our all to win. Winners are the ones who move families, businesses, organizations, cities and countries ahead. Winners are the ones who push progress. You don’t think that couch potato is the one who will cure cancer or open up the next

great technology do you? No—it will be a person who has chosen to be a winner!

Losing can mean winning.

Just because your score in a game or contest is the least at the end of the game doesn’t mean all is lost. You can still be a winner in that you gave it your all, you competed at your highest level, you learned new skills and strategies, and you became a better player and person. That is winning in my book!

Winners help others win.

That is right, good people, people who pursue winning by excellence, are also people who stop to help others so that they, too, can enjoy the spoils of victory. Pursue the win, but help others achieve all that they can as well! Winners make everyone better. When I get into athletic matches I want to play against the best. Yes, I may come up short in the score, but I will be better because that winner will make me grow in every area of my game! Winners stretch the losers so they can become winners too!

Questions for reflection: Are you afraid of winning?

Do you think it is wrong to win?

Are you living each area of your life as though you are a winner? Are you enjoying your wins?

Are you helping others win with you?

Friends, we need to be in the game of life full force! We need to be in it, and we need to be in it to win it!
