Message from the President By Jerry Farmer, 94.5 ROXY, Chamber President
E
nergy. We all want it. We all use it. And, if you’re a Lacey Chamber member, you have a bunch of it. Lacey Chamber members seem to be more engaging, more entrepreneurial, and more energetic than most. So what better topic for the May Chamber Forum than energy? We’re all feeling even more energetic because spring is here. Spring is all about green, so it’s no surprise—at least in my mind—that green can translate into ways to promote and benefit from energy. Green business? You bet. I like to think of it as profit photosynthesis. Green Energy is the next profit frontier, and smart entrepreneurs will find ways to benefit. That’s why our May Forum will feature three great examples of partnerships that can help us benefit from energy. First, the City of Lacey will talk a little about the benefits of their environmental stewardship. We’re lucky in Lacey. Our city “gets it,” providing the foundation and the amenities that make for a great quality of life, which means people want to live here and are happier to do so. Happy people make great customers, productive employees, and committed community members. All of which translates into opportunity for businesses who tune in to preserving and promoting our quality of life—businesses like Puget Sound Energy. PSE is a leader in offering all sorts of great incentives to benefit from going green. One incentive is the Green Power Challenge, so “Flip the Switch” to green. Here’s the challenge: if the folks
May 2011
in Lacey and our capital sister city sign up 1,011 new Green Power customers in 2011, PSE will provide funding for solar power demo projects. Solar power? Here? Absolutely! Think of all the warehouses with empty rooftops just sitting there collecting moss. I see that and I think what a great place to collect and harvest solar energy! Private contractors making deals with private businesses to sell energy to private power companies facilitated by a public/private partnership. Other cites will be green with envy… PSE will also be speaking about their Green Power Rewards program—a way to bring Green Power customers right to your door, and green money right to your cash register. Speaking of public/private partnerships, we’ll also be hearing from Thurston Energy, who has lots of ways to save green. Doing energy audits and hooking businesses up with free products and expert contractors to do your energy upgrade work. Save energy, save money, and create local jobs in the building industry. That’s a partnership that energizes my hopes for a thriving economy. So join us on May 4 for our Chamber Forum. Go to our website at www. LaceyChamber.com to preregister, guarantee your seat, and get a discount too. Get on the green energy bandwagon…it’s going down the road to sustainable profits. Go green, save green, and make some green at the same time. I’m suddenly feeling very energetic…

Air Mobility Command Rodeo By Carlene Joseph, Harborstone Credit Union, Military Affairs Committee Chair
T
he Air Mobility Command (AMC) Rodeo is scheduled for July 2011—it’s hard to believe it’s almost that time of year again. The AMC Rodeo is a biennial Olympic-style competition involving mobility aircraft with Aircrew, Maintenance, Aeromedical Evacuation, Aerial Port and Security Forces personnel competing in their respective core skills. The event showcases the best of U.S.A. and international mobility forces’ abilities and provides a forum for U.S. airmen and international partners to share the best of tactics and techniques that are essential in the continued pursuit of coalition operations around the world. This year, the 62nd Airlift Wing on McChord Field will once again host this event and the Lacey Chamber of Commerce will assist in supporting the home team by coordinating a picnic on, what we hope will be, a sunny afternoon at Heritage Park on McChord Field. The exact date will be announced soon.

We expect to have approximately 200 people in attendance. I look forward to hearing from you!

Data Hidden In Your Copier
Lacey Chamber of Commerce 13th Annual Golf Classic Tourney

hile you’re busy making sure your data is safe by encrypting your wireless network, sending emails over a secure connection, and storing your backups in a highly secured remote location, what are the chances that you’re still putting your information at risk?
Friday, June 3, 2011 The Golf Club at Hawks Prairie Woodlands Course Registration deadline is Friday, May 201, 2011 or until sold out; $130 per player or $500 per team.
It turns out that nearly every digital copier made since 2002 stores scans of every image they copy on an internal flash or hard drive. These hard drives don’t have an endless amount of memory, so over time they’ll overwrite old files with new ones. But still, the fact remains that if you’ve recently copied confidential company documents, images of those documents are living inside your copier. And that means they’re available to anybody who buys your used copier through a warehouse or reseller that hasn’t bothered to wipe your drive.

So what to do about this problem? Just be aware that, before you retire or resell your copier, it’s your responsibility to get confidential information off its hard drive or risk the consequences—which could be anything from having your data sold to identity thieves to finding your company in breach of major privacy regulations such as HIPAA. According to CBS News, who did a big story on digital copiers back in April, “All the major manufacturers told us they offer security or

Hidden Data (continued from page 8) encryption packages on their products.” In other words, while data protection is your responsibility, manufacturers are trying to do their part to help (even if they aren’t always screaming it from the rooftops). The amount you’ll have to pay for security and encryption add-ons varies by manufacturer, of course, and there are also third-party security providers who sell software that will wipe your copier’s drive for you. Bottom line: it will cost you some money to make sure you’re not giving away data along with your old copier. But when you consider the alternative—allowing digital scans of paycheck stubs, employee social security numbers, bank routing numbers, and the kind of information that digital thieves could resell for top dollar—it’s worth it. Telephone Scammers Are Again Targeting State Businesses Scammers posing as Washington Department of Revenue employees are again calling Washington businesses to direct them to a bogus international phone number that charges them for the call, the Department warned today. The automated phone calls state that the Department of Revenue has been trying to reach the business about its tax account, and to call 1-800-631-4228. When the taxpayer calls that number, another recording prompts them to call 10-15-15-8000. If the business calls that number, approximately $7 will be charged to its telephone account. “This is just a scam to mislead callers into paying a phone charge,” Revenue Deputy Director Tremaine Smith said. “Don’t fall for it.” The Department does make phone calls to businesses that fall behind on filing their state excise tax returns, and leaves a nearly identical callback number of 1-800-631-4028. Anyone calling that number will not be directed to call a second number that charges a fee. The Department’s also operates a toll-free telephone assistance number, 1-800-647-7706. This same scam occurred exactly two years ago, but efforts to track down the perpetrators were unsuccessful because they were based in foreign countries.
