couple of weeks ago I went to the 5:01 Surge. Have you been to one lately? It was truly a great time to network with fellow Chamber members. It was at the new O Bee Credit Union on Martin Way in Hawks Prairie. One thing that I have always wondered is why the whole membership does not attend these events. They are more than just a mixer, they are opportunities to trade information with other members, meet new members, make new friends, and see what features and benefits Chamber members provide. I have gone to the Surges over the years and have always come away feeling glad that I went. Please join us for the next one in August at Red Wind Casino. Did I mention it’s FREE and the food and drink is always great!!

Our summer picnic was a great success—we enjoyed a beautiful summer day at the Woodland Creek Park! Sceni and Amanda did a great job of preparing the food and making all the arrangements for the 80 plus members that attended. I especially enjoyed the motorcycle gang that entertained us with their gruff way, synchronized riding, and showing off their high horsepower. What a treat.
Our Human Resource Committee is getting ready to roll out the new job description for the open position of executive director. It will be structured differently than the previous position. A number of people have inquired as to when we will post the opening. The current plans are to post it around the 15th of August. We hope to make a selection by October 1 and have the new director in place by October 15 just in time for the auction—what a way to start a new job. Byron Burgess from Employer Support of the Guard and Reserves (ESGR) will be our speaker at our August Forum. Bryon, as a representative of ESGR, advocates for Reserves and Guardsmen who are having difficulties with their employers as they attempt to return to their old workplace. The subject of his talk is “Developing a culture in which all American employers support and value the service of their military employees.” He will be speaking about what ESGR does and will briefly discuss the Federal law Uniform Service Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA). Join us Wednesday, August 4, at Saint Martin’s Worthington Center. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. and the program begins at noon.

3rd Stryker Brigade BBQ By Carlene Joseph, Harborstone Credit Union, Military Affairs Committee Chair
A
couple of weeks ago, Denise Burditus from Heritage Bank and I had the opportunity to visit the automobile dealers at the Olympia Auto Mall to help raise funds for an upcoming barbeque we’re planning for the soldiers of the 3rd Stryker Brigade. As we looked around the car lots, it was great to see several soldiers looking for a brand new automobile. Many of these soldiers saved extra cash and now these funds are being used to make sizeable down payments on cars, houses, or other “nice to have” items. I also have to say that the dealerships at the Olympia Auto Mall are a very patriotic group, so it was great interacting with each person we encountered along the way.
As we continued down the road, we saw one soldier after another and it was very clear that our soldiers are gradually returning home and soon you’ll see a boost in the local economy. As a community, we should first say “thank you” to those who are currently serving or who have served in the past. You can say thank you by helping the Lacey Chamber of Commerce and the local Association of the United States Army Subchapter raise $29,000 for a “Welcome Home Barbeque,” which will take place in September. The Lacey Chamber and AUSA are making great progress, but we still need to raise more funds.
At the barbeque we expect to have over 5,000 soldiers and their family members in attendance. In the meantime, please attend our next military affairs committee on Tuesday, August 10, 7:30 a.m., at the Hawks Prairie Restaurant. Our guest speaker will be from the Seattle Army Recruiting Command and we’ll provide updates about the 3rd Stryker Brigade’s upcoming barbeque. I look forward to seeing you there!

2010 Thurston County Fair Written by Rick Storvick
The 2010 Thurston County Fair is happening August 4-8. The fair draws a crowd of around 35,000 each year to the Lacey area for a week of fun, farm animals, food, and more. Visitors enjoy a great day at the Fair and also support other local business on their way to and from the Fair. The Fair also provides additional business opportunities with more than 100 vendor booths. A beneficial economic impact to the local community has been seen each year since 1871 when the first Fair was held at Columbia Hall. That benefit continued when the Thurston County Fair made its first appearance at the current Lacey location on Carpenter Road in 1941, where it has been held continuously since 1958. Whether you like the thrill of the carnival or eating elephant ears and curly fries, the Fair has something for everyone. Fair visitors are invited to stroll among the award winning quilts housed in Heritage Hall or see all the hobbies and crafts in the Sokolik Building. You can view an international show of Polish children’s art from Lacey’s sister city Minsk Mazowiecki Poland. Or, enter one of the cooking contests like the Fair Manager’s Chocolate Cake or Spoon-
er’s Berry Pie and receive a prize and recognition in your home town. A favorite with families each year is the Kids Tractor Pull, sponsored by American Family Insurance, running three times daily near the main gate. If taking in some excellent entertainment is more to your liking, the Thurston County Fair is the perfect spot. Kevin Wolfe, stage hypnotist, will be performing this year with shows twice daily. Country music artist Drew Peterson will also be performing daily and, last but not least, Professor Bamboozle will be dazzling crowds on the Food Court Stage. The headliner for Sunday on the Les Schwab Stage is award winning, national recording artists Downhere, sponsored by KACS 90.5 FM. The Thurston County Fair takes pride in supporting local youth and agriculture from throughout the county. Exhibitors from 4-H, FFA, and Open Class will have animals in the barns in addition to all the other exhibits during the Fair. Visitors are invited to stop by to see the animals as they compete for ribbons and prizes for their owners. On Saturday night the Fair
will host an Animal Market Sale which has raised over one million dollars for local youth participants since its inception in 1991. The sale has provided an excellent venue for individuals and businesses to support local students for their efforts in raising and caring for market animals.
However you participate in the 2010 Thurston County Fair—as a sponsor, vendor, exhibitor, parent, or visitor—please remember to thank a volunteer for making the whole event possible. Although the county hires a handful of local residents to help with the Fair, it is primarily run by volunteers. From the Fair Board volunteers to the host and hostesses, bus drivers, department superintendents, veterinarians, project leaders, and many more, this great community tradition would not be possible without tremendous volunteer support.
Creating Employee Value Written by Brad Worthley Most organizations hold meeting after meeting talking about how to create more customer value. However, I encourage leaders to consider having meetings about increasing employee value. They should sit down with employees and let them know that they want them there twenty years from now, so what would it take to make that happen? The important thing is that if you are going to have a discussion like that, you want to put money aside. You want to let them know that the discussion is about creating more value but money is not going to be included in this discussion. The reason money is excluded is this: what happens when you give employees more money? Eventually they will want what? More money! So that’s not going to change and we know that. This does not mean you may never have a con-
versation about wages, but that conversation would come later.
The key is to have open dialogue and find out what things would allow employees to enjoy their jobs more. What are the things that are going to motivate them to work harder and enjoy their work environment more? And actually, I have found over time that most of the things they request are very simplistic. They want more training, they want to be listened to, they want more praise and recognition, or they might want upgraded uniforms or equipment. Many want to be more professional and to feel that the organization is investing in their future. I found out that the feedback is actually really positive for the organizations because the employees simply want to be more active in
the decisions about their work environment and they want the organization to be more successful as well.
I am also a huge believer in doing annual employee satisfaction surveys because if we want employees to be happier and more satisfied with their jobs, we need to keep measuring that. You cannot manage what you cannot measure, so employee surveys provide a great tool to organizations. You need to watch employee satisfaction levels because if the level drops at any given time, you can be certain that eventually it is going to impact the customers’ experience as well.
