Welcome On behalf of Lac La Biche County Council, I’m pleased to welcome you to another edition of the Community Activity Guide. With the adoption of Council’s new 2019-2024 Strategic Plan, we’ve committed to transforming the County into our vision of an ideal community—which includes a renewed commitment to recreation and culture. Between the County itself and our many community groups, we are blessed with a wide variety of programs and events that cater to people from all walks of life. As our array of recreation opportunities grows, the Community Activity Guide is your key to discovering what our region offers.

EXCITING OUTDOOR UPGRADES COMING SOON! Lac La Biche County is always working on new projects and upgrades to outdoor infrastructure that help residents and visitors enjoy our region’s natural beauty. Here’s a sneak peek at some of the construction planned for the future: • Sports fields at the Bold Center (including fields for soccer, football, and track events), tentatively opening in summer 2019. • Ball diamonds and a camping area at the Bold Center. • New playground at Golden Sands. • Playground upgrades at Lakeview Estates and Dumasfield. • Picnic shelter addition at the floating dock (near the Lac La Biche Lake boat launch). • Resurfacing of outdoor rinks at Dumasfield, Rich Lake, and Owl River. • Ongoing walking trail resurfacing. • Widening of the walking trail at the Holowachuk Estates’ access road. • New boat launches at Poplar Point, Owl River (including the campground) and at the Plamondon Motor Sports property near Whitesands Resort (along Campsite Road).

Jim Skladan was one of the first people to fill his Prescription to Get Active at the Bold Center – and he used it more than 40 times in two months. How did you find out about Prescription to Get Active? “I went for a physical and the doctor recommended that I lose some weight. I told him ‘I guess I’ll go to the Bold Center.’ He said ‘I’ve got just the thing for you’ and gave me the prescription.” What’s your favourite form of exercise that you can access with your prescription? “Walking, of course. I’ve had some knee problems that needed surgery to fix in the last few years, but now one of my goals is to walk seven kilometres in an hour.” What have been some of the program’s benefits? “I was able lose 10 pounds in two months, and my goal is to lose 20 pounds in a year. This has me thinking that maybe I’ll go with a push lawnmower for my lot instead of buying a new ride-on mower.” Have your goals and outlook changed when it comes to physical activity? “They definitely have. I thought I wouldn’t like being this active. I used to think that people who went for walks needed a hobby or something else to do. Now I find it kind of fun and I don’t mind it at all.” What are your overall impressions of the program and the Bold Center? "The staff at the Bold Center are amazing. Everyone is friendly, and my wife feels the same way when she comes here.”

24 | About FCSS

WHAT IS FCSS? Lac La Biche County Family & Community Support Services (FCSS) is a partnership between Lac La Biche County and the Government of Alberta. The mandate of FCSS is to provide locally-driven, preventative social initiatives that enhance the well-being of individuals, families and the community. Local FCSS branches like ours are part of a larger provincial program that collectively ensures Albertans have access to a strong network of preventative social supports. Our programs aim to establish a healthy community of empowered individuals, resilient youth, supported seniors, and healthy families. We also provide a mix of direct programs and grant funds to support community organizations. We are strengthening community partnerships and looking at barriers to increase social support systems in the community. We are working on strategies to reduce complex social issues like unstable housing and poverty.

LAC LA BICHE COUNTY FCSS TURNS 50 FCSS is celebrating its 50th birthday in Lac La Biche County! Way back in 1969, Preventative Social Services (now FCSS) established a partnership with the Town of Lac La Biche (now Lac La Biche County). Fifty years later, FCSS staff continue to improve our residents’ lives, creating new programs and services that make our community healthier, happier, and well-supported.

GRANTS Both Lac La Biche County and FCSS offer separate grant programs that help community groups, non-profits, and individuals offer programs, events, and activities that strengthen the community. To learn more about both Lac La Biche County community grants and FCSS grants, visit laclabichecounty.com.

FCSS PROGRAMS BLOCK PARTIES Connect with your community and get to know your neighbours— throw a block party in your area today! FCSS can help you plan the perfect event, providing a gift card for food, street signs, a binder with activity ideas, and more.

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX PROGRAM (CVITP) FCSS has offered tax preparation help for seniors with modest income and simple tax situations for many years, and is now extending this free service to all individuals with modest income and simple tax situations. Call us at 780-623-6745 to book your appointment starting in March, provided you are below the following income thresholds: • Single Person – $25,000 • Couple – $30,000 • Adult with one child – $30,000 (for each additional dependent you have, add $2,000 to family income)
