Do you do anything for physical activity during your day? welcome!

ASSESS

As hopeful signs emerge that we’ve turned the page on the COVID-19 pandemic, I’d like to welcome you to the 2021 Fall/Winter Community Activity Guide. Our community is fortunate to have state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor recreation facilities, and I’m pleased that we’re once again able to use them to their full potential. As we work towards improving recreation opportunities for all Lac La Biche County residents with exciting projects like the outdoor sports fields at the Bold Center, along with a brand-new aquatics centre, I’m looking forward to seeing crowds populate our facilities - both current and future - once more.

A Message from Ken Van Buul, Chief Administrative Officer Our community has spent more

How many minutes of physical activity do you perform week? thaneach a year dealing with the

pandemic, adapting If less than 150min/week for adults or 60min/day forCOVID-19 children ask in new ways to an ever-changing reality. I’m proud of all the ingenuity “Is this something you would like to improve?” that County staff have shown in creating safe ways for residents to stay healthy and fit, even in these unprecedented times.

ADVISE

However, I’m also pleased that in-person County programming can finally resume. Although we’ve learned new ways of relating to each other and staying connected, we cannot replace the feeling of face-to-face interaction. I hope that you and your family will take advantage of the excellent in-person programming that our staff offer, and we are proud to present this latest edition of the Community Activity Guide.

Provide a Prescription To Get Active.

Regardless of who you are, the Community Activity Guidetheir activity levels or decrease sitting times. Encourage your patient to increase will help you and your family find exciting ways to use County facilities to lead active, healthy lives.

Have you already given a prescription?

Great – assess where your patient is today. If there was one prescription that could prevent and treat dozens of diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity, shouldn’t we be prescribing it to all of our patients? ~Sallis M.D

TRICK-OR-PLAY PASS

Jim Skladan was one of the first people to fill his Prescription to Get Active at the Bold Center — and he used it more than 40 times in two months. How did you find out about the Prescription to Get Active program? “I went for a physical and the doctor recommended that I lose some weight. I told him ‘I guess I’ll go to the Bold Center.’ He said ‘I’ve got just the thing for you’ and gave me the prescription.” What’s your favourite form of exercise that you can access with your prescription? “Walking, of course. I’ve had some knee problems that needed surgery to fix in the last few years, but now one of my goals is to walk seven kilometres in an hour.” What have been some of the program’s benefits? “I was able to lose 10 pounds in two months, and my goal is to lose 20 pounds in a year. This has me thinking that maybe I’ll go with a push lawnmower for my lot instead of buying a new ride-on mower.” Have your goals and outlook changed when it comes to physical activity? “They definitely have. I thought I wouldn’t like being this active. I used to think that people who went for walks needed a hobby or something else to do. Now I find it kind of fun and I don’t mind it at all.” What are your overall impressions of the program and the Bold Center? “The staff at the Bold Center are amazing. Everyone is friendly, and my wife felt the same way when she came here.”
