Lacoste + Stevenson is a design based architecture and urban design practice established in 1997 by Thierry Lacoste and David Stevenson. They have developed a reputation for innovative and responsive solutions to a range of public and private projects. The practice has formed a close relationship with noted landscape architects, Anton James Design. Their first major project was a large industrial complex of office and warehouse units for a private client. This building is acknowledged as providing an alternative model for this speculative building type. This award-wining project contributes to the streetscape as well as creating an atmosphere that is more akin to a business park than an industrial park.

Prior to moving to Australia, Thierry Lacoste in his Paris partnership, was awarded the Prix de la Premiere Oeuvre (Best First Built Work) for the Overseas Archives Building in Aix-en-Provence, France. The archive is a new building added to the existing facility, containing public space on the ground floor and and a reading room on the first floor.
In December 1999 the practice won an invited housing design competition held by Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority. The project was for a $56 million, 110 luxury apartment development in 3 buildings at the end of Darling Island, Pyrmont. The winning scheme was developed to DA and approved by DUAP in association with Jackson Dyke Architects.
During the same year, they were one of eight invited to compete in a competition for a new restaurant on the top level of the Pompidou Centre in Paris. The challenge was to introduce a new fitout into a well known and dominating building. A 230 metre ribbon was introduced, framed in timber and steel, covered with a washable golden fabric and internally illuminated.
In April 2000 they won an invited competition to design and construct new premises for a leading French toy manufacturer, Vilac, in regional France. Many school groups visit the toy factory and so the carpark creates a game board as a sign for the factory. The integration of the building into the landscape was done jointly with Anton James Design. Lacoste + Stevenson are the architects for the entry buildings in new $8 million permanent garden, Garden Park, Mt Penang Parklands near Gosford. Anton James Design won the park in an invited competition.
+ stevenson + urban design Lacoste + Stevenson were one of 4 practices invited by the Olympic Co-ordination Authority and the Government Architect in June 2001 to prepare a draft masterplan to provide a vision for future development at Sydney Olympic Park both within the established development sites and beyond to create a vibrant and active environment, lacking since the Olympic Games. More recently, Lacoste + Stevenson were one of 5 invited to propose improvements in the Parramatta Road Urban Design Competition. Their scheme was highly commended and has received favourable comment within the profession and the critical press.
In all projects, Lacoste + Stevenson aim to make more of a design opportunity than might ďŹ rst be apparent. Both of the principals are directly involved in all their projects, which ensures an innovative and high standard of design together with a strong commitment to client service. The ofďŹ ce has a high level of technological skills in design, presentation and documentation.
