Sydney parks get an architectural makeover May 30, 2011

Flow er pow er ... the kiosk at Sydney Park has been rew orked by Stanic Harding.

Turning Sydney parks into flexible spaces - parchitecture - is in full swing, writes Helen Greenwood. At Rushcutters Bay, you can kick back in a charming new kiosk and watch your kids throw a ball as you look out over the water with a coffee in hand. Across town, at Pirrama Park on a headland that used to be the Water Police base, a kiosk kitted out with state-of-the-art green technology has a belvedere lookout and another great harbour view. Further west, just off the frantic Princes Highway, Sydney Park's playground is more like an adventure trail for kids, with a neat, architecturally designed kiosk nearby. Oh and there's a sparkling, tiled toilet block for the tykes, too. And if you go to Sydney Olympic Park, you can stash your bike outside a cafe converted from the old Armory Wharf at Newington and watch the river flow. Architecture is changing Sydney's parks, blending buildings into the landscape, inserting sustainable technology and lending elegance, longevity and quality to our urban spaces. Influenced by the Barcelona model of the 1980s with its democratic ideals and use of modern materials, Sydney's architects are rejuvenating pocket parks and large, open landscapes. The aim of parchitecture is to improve a park by updating it and make the best use of its assets. Think of it as an architectural Trinny and Susannah makeover. A director at Lacoste+Stevenson Architects, Thierry Lacoste, says park architecture has to minimise its impact ''so that it's not the architecture that is visible but the park that dominates''. He was involved in the makeover of the Reg Bartley Oval and grandstand, tennis courts and kiosk at Rushcutters Bay, which took six years from concept to finish. ''We did many schemes,'' Lacoste says. ''People are always worried about changes. Especially in a park. It took a while to convince the locals that it was an improvement. That there would be less impact of building in the park rather than more.'' Making over a public space is a complicated mix of communities, controversy, heritage and history. Not all attempts are successful. Witness the backdown by the City of Sydney over Kings Cross's Fitzroy Gardens. A founding principal of Hill Thalis Architecture, Philip Thalis, says the notion that parks must exclude architecture is wrong. ''You can have a playground, a cafe and superlative park all together on the harbour,'' he says. ''And it's disappointingly rare in Sydney.'' Thalis's entry in the Barangaroo design competition has been discarded amid much public debate but, happily, Pirrama Park has been a success story, garnering Hill Thalis, Aspect Studios and CAB the prestigious Walter Burley Griffin Award for Urban Design last year. ''Green doesn't simply mean the colour green,'' Thalis says. ''Green means embracing all the contemporary technology and agendas. At Pirrama we capture, filter and use water to irrigate the park instead of it running into the harbour. You can retrofit any park in Sydney like that.'' It's not just technology that has changed, but people's expectations are different from even 20 years ago. Parchitecture has to reflect an urban space's past and satisfy today's demands. Sydney Park, the undulating, 40-hectare expanse of wetland and watercourses, trees and playing fields at St Peters, refuses to disguise its history as an old brickworks and tip. The kilns have been preserved as part of the landscape by JMD Design while the kiosk by Stanic Harding is funked up with brightly coloured chairs. The rejuvenation of most of these parks is spearheaded by the City of Sydney's City Projects Design Team. Its manager, Chris Thomas, says park design is about ''keeping it as simple and as green as possible but catering for all the things people want to do in the park, which aren't always green and simple and are often in direct conflict, such as tennis or basketball courts, barbecues, playgrounds and the question of dogs or no dogs''.

The parchitecture mantra according to Thomas is: no dead zones; a mix of passive and active uses; and keep it community friendly. Turruwul Park in semi-industrial Rosebery fits the bill. Its tight, traditional rectangle bordered by semi-attached houses has a spare, modest-yet-elegant renovation tailored for local needs by Hassell Architects. ''The aim is to get people using the park as much as possible without cordoning off parts [of] the park,'' Thomas says. ''It's a struggle between passive and active use … People love barbecues.'' Thalis says architects are trying to make the social life of parks more flexible. ''Why couldn't you have a market on a Saturday?'' he says. ''Concerts or theatre, as in Balmoral? Or Shakespeare in the park, as in The Domain? The more inclusive [these parks] are, the better they are.'' Thalis believes Sydneysiders are in a golden era of parks. ''When you look at the number of parks being rejuvenated, it's almost without parallel,'' he says. ''You'd have to go back to the 1880s or the best of the 1970s to see a comparable group of realised projects. It's something to elebrate.''

The design strategy was to restore the existing structure’s prominence in the parkland and create better physical and visual connections around it. In order to minimize the impact of the new additions, they are placed directly behind the grandstand and divided into 3 smaller buildings instead of one building, reducing the overall bulk and scale. The new buildings are set off the grandstand with a passageway between them.

Connection between the new and the old is on the first floor via a steel mesh walkway that lightly bridges the four buildings allowing light to filter below. The ancillary buildings are clad in the same weatherboard profile as the grandstand and with the heights of the new buildings aligning with the grandstand; they echo the scale and expression of the grandstand.

The ground floor of the three new buildings houses the male and female public toilets and a storage room. At high level, the timber façade into each of these rooms is perforated with a flower pattern allowing natural light and ventilation into these spaces, casting flower patterns around the rooms. The ground staff facilities on the top floor are also animated with perforations and views to the sky and trees through round skylights. Share Posted by John at 10:30 PM

© lacoste+stevenson The Kiosk is clad vertically with hardwood timber boards some of which have been routed with a flower pattern that seemingly dance across the surface. A continuous strip of glazing wraps around the internal café seating and part of the kitchen, opening up to counters on two sides of the building. These windows provide natural light and the opportunity to open the space up to breezes. The windows ensure extensive views over the tennis courts, oval and glimpses of the water in Rushcutters Bay.

© lacoste+stevenson A generous timber deck surrounds the building providing space for outdoor seating. The deck is shaded by a pergola of slender steel columns and stainless steel mesh supporting a range of different species of climbing vines. This parterre in the air allows the new building to recede into the surrounding parkland. Three palm trees punctuate the deck and pergola playfully marking the building’s location from across the park.
